Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Pumpkinkit sat silently in the corner of camp, her bright green eyes reflecting in the dim light. It was a few days after Phantomstar became leader, stealing the throne right out from under Flamingstar. Flamingstar had gone missing, no one in Nightclan had seen where she went. A part of Pumpkinkit was a little relieved to have a new face in charge but was also too naive and young to understand the grown-up life. She was unsure what would happen now and what Nightclan will become with Phantomstar being leader. He seemed like he would be a good leader but he also had a hard outer shell.
Pumpkinkit was too young to leave camp so she often found herself bored or lost in thought, like this very moment. Her gaze was blank as she stared at nothing in particular while her thoughts swirled inside her head. She was completely oblivious to anything happening around her at that given moment.
"Whatchya thinkin' 'bout?" came the voice of a small grey feline as she padded up to her fellow kitten. Berrykit was young and naive to the world, and although Pumpkinkit was spending her morning considering the ramifications of the leadership change, the most important thing the little grey kitten had thought about today was how long it was going to take her to pester someone into playing a game with her. This was in part because of her age; it had only been recently that she was even allowed to exit the nursery on her own. Part of it was just her nature, though, and even if she was a full warrior, the likelihood that she would have considered something so serious was pretty low. Instead of being an active agent in the world around her, it seemed probable that she would always just be content with whatever happened. It was her gift, or her curse.
The sudden voice of another kitten startled Pumpkinkit out of her thoughts. She whipped her head around to see that Berrykit had approached her and was asking her what she was thinking about. She felt warm under her fur with embarrassment that she had failed to hear the other kitten come up to her. "Oh-uh, I'm just thinking." She didn't know Berrykit all that well. Pumpkinkit happened to be slightly older than the grey kitten so Pumpkinkit hadn't had the pleasure of officially meeting Berrykit, yet. "Your...Berrykit, right?" She hoped that was the right name. She would be extremely embarrassed if it weren't.
Berrykit didn't mean to make the other kitten embarrassed. She wouldn't have been embarassed if someone else approached her when she was in la-la land, and her tiny brain struggled to conceptualize that other cats weren't as carefree as she was.
"Just thinkin?" she responded with a smile. "Can I join you just thinkin?" She then smiled widely when the kitten said her name. "Yup! Berrykit is my name!" She beamed, her goofy grin radiating in her eyes. "Mama once told me that pumpkins were berries," Berrykit had asked her mom to tell her all of the berries so that she knew exactly what she was named after, "so we have basically the same name! Twins! How cool is that?"
"Sure, I guess?" She replied, allowing the other kit to join her. Though, she wasn't sure how this was even remotely fun but she wasn't going to complain about having a friend. "Wait...you know my name?" Usually anyone who knew Pumpkinkit often didn't like her. She could be rather obnoxious and a little too enthusiastic about everything. It was rare that anyone knew her and still wanted to hang out with her. "And, I didn't know pumpkins were considered berries! That is really cool!"
"I know all of the kitten's names!" she meowed proudly. There wasn't really anything else that she could do in the nursery other than learn names, especially as a singleton who didn't have siblings to play with. She smiled warmly, before nodding with a bit too much enthusiasm. "Isn't it? I wonder how many other berries there are, we could probably unite and become a lil berry army and we could catch all the bugs in camp! Doesn't that sound fun?"
"Kind of...but I heard that there are these berries called Raspberries and Nightclan has them on their territory! Creampuff almost died once because she touched one and she's super allergic! But apparently you can eat them and they taste delicious! I'd give anything to find those berries and try one!" She responded with her bright green eyes round in wonder. "Here's an idea...what if we snuck out of camp to try one?"
Berrykit's eyes widened at the proposal. Sneak out of camp? She'd always wanted to know what the outside looked like.... and raspberries did sound goood.... "Alright!" she chirped after a brief moment of consideration, her paws tapping in excitement for the adventure she was about to embark upon. "But how do we know that we aren't allergic to them?"
Pumpkinkit rubbed her chin with her paw in thought. "Well...I guess we will have to try one and find out." She decided with an enthusiastic tone, lowing her paw once more. "I mean, anyone can be allergic to anything! There's no telling if your allergic to something until you try it! The likeliness of both of us being allergic are slim. If one of us is allergic and has a reaction, the other one can find help. We might get in trouble for it but the adventure would definitely be worth it. Now, to come up with an escape plan." She scanned the cavern which was nearly completely empty. Nightclan cats hunted at night so all of the hunters were out hunting and patrolling. They could easily sneak out now but they could be caught by a patrol outside of camp. "Perhaps we should go during the day. All the warriors will be asleep and there are less predators out during the day. We can sneak out and find some raspberries!"
Berrykit nodded thoughtfully. Pumpkinkit was probably right, that was the only way! "I heard once that there was a cat who was allergic to squirrels! Could you imagine? They're so tasty," she bumbled with a nod. Her ear flicked at the idea of them getting into trouble; who could possibly be mad at little Berrykit's innocent little face?
"Yeah! That's a good idea!" she then chirped. "I've never been outside alone during the day. Do you think the rumors are true that the Sun God will smite any NightClan cat that is in his presence, or do you think that's just somethin' mama told me to keep me occupied?" Her gaze drifted from Pumpkinkit to the camp. "Maybe over there would be a good spot to do it?" she then meowed, pointing to a small, almost unrecognizable path that was just big enough for a kitten to sneak out, but only barely.
Pumpkinkit scoffed. "The Sun God was destroyed by Littlestar. Besides, queens and elders like to tell us scary stories to deter us from getting into mischief and be on our best behavior." The little orange tabby followed Berrykit's gaze to the small path leading out of camp. How did she not notice that spot before? "That will be a perfect spot!" She grinned, her paws tingling with excitement and anticipation.
