Nothing like towering heights to fill him with hatred for everyone and everything.
Gripping the rain-lashed branch of a tree dangling over the edge of the small waterfall, Floodfate's claws dug into the tree so deeply that every jerky movement of the branch in the wind sent jolts of pain shooting through his paws. He clung to the slick limb for dear life as the storm pounded on, his fur soaked and freezing. He needed to get out of here. He needed to jump down. He needed to flee to safety before a stronger wind pulled him over the edge. He knew what he needed to do, but he just couldn't.
Because as he risked another glance over the side of the branch, his stomach plummeted, and he stared wordlessly at the towering waterfall. One wrong step and instead of landing back on safe land, he'd plunge over the edge. Down down down that deep gap, crashing into the water below, he already felt sick and quickly squeezed his eyes shut before he threw up.
The wind shook his perilous perch again and a rattling moan of terror left him.
Rain lashed his sides and cold stings penetrated through his fur, which was whipped flatly against him by the deluge. Back in camp, the rest of the clan hunkered down in the cavern, warm and dry and safe. Everyone except, Phantomstar realized, Floodfate-- and what a fitting name it seemed to be for the tom who was currently clinging to dear life as the waters crashed from above and below. Lightning flared in the sky and lit everything with a bright, blinding illumination that allowed for the scarred leader to, briefly, see his warrior silhouetted against the heavens.
"Floodfate! You need to come down from there now!" He howled over the gusting gales, though he knew it was futile. Floodfate, from what he knew of the tom, was no idiot even if he managed to snare himself in this disastrous situation, and he had to be acutely aware of the predicament he found himself in. Every second that washed away was a second Floodfate met his own flooded fate.
Wasting no more of the time they didn't have, he lunged at the trunk and sank his claws into it. With how soaked it was, it took a massive effort and many, many splinters in his pads before he managed to find some purchase, but slowly he made his way skyward until he could use another, slightly lower branch to stabilize himself. "Floodfate," Phantomstar snarled, authority laden in his voice, "you need to move towards me. I'll break the branch if I have to come up there for you myself, and then we're both going to go down."
