With light pawsteps a fluffy black and white she cat padded away from the camp. The sky was slowly turning to morning but the sun had yet to rise as Faithfulfeather made her way out past the underbrush and through the path she had grown so used to. She awoke earlier than expected and feeling as though something was different about today but couldn't put a paw on what or why. With a sigh she went to go see how Lavender wTas fairing this morning.
Time always flows quicker with age and that was something the she cat would agree with. It felt so long ago and yet almost as if it had been yesterday when Honeycream had persuaded Faithfulfeather to help raise the badger cub. Somehow with luck more than likely from Starclan they had managed to not only raise the cub but seemingly had been able to hide its existence from the clan. Still this couldn't last forever and at somepoint things would have to change...Lavender wasn't goingto be a cub forever. Perhaps this would be a good day to talk to Honeycream about how to handle the next step in Lavender's life. She knew Honeycream cared for the cub as much as she had but Faithfulfeather knew it was almost time to release the badger into the wild on its own. The badger deserved to live life as a badger and not a cat. If they kept him for too long he wouldn't be able to survive on his own or find a mate later in his life. It was almost time...Faithfulfeather could feel this from the depth of her heart. How would she be able to handle this when it was time for him to go?
Honeycream had left camp for the second time that morning, the first for his hunting patrol and now to go see Lavender. While out on his patrol he'd spotted some flowers, lavender ones, and they weren't due t bloom for another few weeks yet. So he'd plucked the, in hopes of bringing them to the badger they were named after. Maybe she'd like the scent of them. If not, then Fiathfulfeatehr might. Thinking of the she-cat had him blushing. The tom knew he had a crush on the she-cat. It had started not long after she'd agreed to help him hide his badger cub from everyone else and only got worse the more they spent time together. His only saving grace was that he was a naturally shy, blushy, cat and thus she hadn't picked up on his obvious crush. Or at least he didn't think so. With flowers dangling from his mouth, the tom made his way towards their little hideaway. The path familiar and getting well worn at this point. His mind straying to the she-cat he hoped was also there.

The black and white she cat made it to the makeshift den her and Honeycream made together for Lavender, and sniffed the air to tell if the badger was there. Unsurprisingly enough the badger was still in one spot. Looking in she saw the rising and falling form of a young badger cub sleep...well at this point Lavender was a young badger and not so much a cub anymore, which in truth made the she cat sad. Honeycream and her had made a great team for Lavender. Wait why have? They still were a great team. Before all of this the she cat would only see the young tom here and there, perhaps chatting on occasion but hadn't gotten to know too well. Thanks to Lavender they had gotten close, very close. Recently the she cat had had many thoughts at night pondering what their relationship was....they were definitely friends but there was something there she didn't expect. Something she couldn't quite figure out what it was. A small part of her was scared, nervous even. However...a bigger part was ever so curious. Even whispering to her to go even further but what was further? Did she know, or perhaps she already knows but isn't sure of the answer herself? Faithfulfeather was lost in thought and not paying attention to her surroundings.
(so I don't forget the plot and have to go look it up again. Plot: the two confess and become mates, in that time frame tehy release Lavender the Badger cub into the wild and encourage it to leave the den. Maybe someday it'll come back but until then the two become mates and live happily ever after) ashestoashes
Honeycream had fallen for her. Mostly the soft, motherly ways she cared for Lavender., how so easily she helped him, her kindness, her sweetness, her faithful heart. It was comforting to have her near by and so his crush on her was only a natural thing to him. But Honeycream had never been a brave cat. Many didn't see him as a good warrior because he preferred to not fight, or hunt, or do anything but watch over kits, collect herbs, and moss, and flowers. He's a simple cat, and Faithfulfeather has shown that she understands and accepts that of him where many others have not. Having accepted a while back that his feeling never be returned, the tom had decided to say nothing about them least he scary away Faithfulfeather and loss her friendship as well as any thing that may develop. Approaching the den, the tom spotted the she-cat f his thoughts standing at the entrance gazing in. She looked a little troubled and that brought a frown to his face. What was bothering her? Was Lavender okay? Had something happened? Picking up his pace to a near job, the cream tom hurried the last few paces to her side, brushing up against her with out meaning to in order to see into the den and check on Lavender for himself. Seeing her safe, his puzzled mind went to Faiuthfulfeather as clearly the problem wasn't Lavender but with the she-cat herself.

Faithfulfeather came out of her thoughts when she felt Honeycream rub against to see Lavender. The she cat felt her fur heat up from the small action but didn't say anything about it. Instead she whispered to the tom, "Do...do you think Lavender is old enough to be on her own? She can't be a cub forever and at some point she will have to know how to be on her own. We can't bring her to Springclan and if they were to find out about her it wouldn't be good for anyone involved. I mean..." The black and white warrior paused for a moment before going on. "I mean I don't want her to go but for her own good I think we need to get her ready to go her own way." The she cat gave a sigh and wiped a small tear that came to her eye.
"What?" That was random, and a little out of the blue. But maybe..maybe he'd been avoiding thinking about that kind of stuff. Honeycream was pretty content with how things were and he wasn't a big fan of change, at least not big change like that. It'd taken him nearly a whole moon to accept that Jetstar was now their leader, so to think of Lavender leaving was heartbreak and unimaginable. "How.....how would we do that?" They barely knew anything about badgers and what they'd been taught was more to fear them and how to beat them in battle. Raising them was something they'd learned all on their own. "Besides, she happy here. We're here. We can watch her, just like we have been." He refused to accept that Lavender needed to be released and left to figure things out as a badger normally would. She was his, and Honeycream didn't want her to go. Tears sprang to his eyes, some of them angry at the thought of Lavender having to leave and them abandoning her. Others for the sadness it would cause him to see her go.

Faithfulfeather paused before speaking again, "Honeycream Lavender isn't a cat nor would she be accepted by the clan as she is. They would see her as dangerous and see what we did as potentially putting the clan in danger which we technically did. Not that I regret anything we have done here," added the she cat quickly. "She is not a cat but a badger...she deserves to live her life as a badger. It's really hard I know but we only want the best for her, no? To survive on her own, to find a mate, and to have cubs on her own. She won't be able to have that if she doesn't leave now...she will think she is a cat and be rejected not only by our own clanmates and other cats but also by the species of her kind. They would see her as a freak and would avoid her. I only ever want happiness for her and for you. I know this is tough but," the black and white she cat placed her paw over his," I know this would be the right thing. This will be worth it. It's like a kit going off on their own. A parent shouldn't hold back their child but let them go on to live their own lives and destinies hoping they gave all of the knowledge they could have provided to help their kid. It's the hardest thing for a parent to do but the most rewarding as well."
Faithfulfeather held back her own tears to help Honeycream and took a deep breath. "Honey...it is time for her to be free. I think she will understand what we are doing. After all it is roughly around this age when the moms encourage them to leave the nest so to speak to be free. Found that out from another cat. She will be happy and I don't think she will forget about us." Giving the tom a nuzzle she purred. "You know I am proud of you for everything you have done? What we have done? This is the last chapter we have to finish for Lavender's story to begin. But this doesn't have to be the end of...us."
Honeycream was in tears by the end of her little speech. He understood, but he just couldn't do it. How could he? He'd helped raise her? How did parents do this?! Maybe...maybe because they still saw their kits and he'd be losing his. The tears only continued, flowing down his muzzle and to the ground, sniffing didn't help and thinking about the future, of her staying only caused him heartache. Faithfulfeather was right, Lavender needed to leave and grow up all on her own now. "I know...and I'm glad you were here for this as well. She loves you, you know. You should hear the little noise she makes when I tell her you're gonna come by too. And she smiles! I never knew badgers could smile, but she does!" It was bittersweet thinking about her, but a smile was slowly making its way to his face. He knew this was for the best, for Lavender to grow up and become a true badger, but he'd never forget her. Honeycream could feel himself blush at her last words, the words that spoke of them still having future. Why would she want him, the loser flower loving tom who hated fighting? It was a mystery, one he'd find the answer to. But...only after Lavender was gone. He wasn't sure he could bring himself to do that now, and thus pushing off the separation of him and the badger just waking before them. The tom wouldn't have the resolve then to do what was needed of him. "Where...where do we take her?" He wasn't ignoring her last statement, and he hoped she understood that, but he had to focus on this right now. Or he'd never be ready to let Lavender go.

The black and white warrior was silent for one thoughtful moment, "The Forest...there are a lot of badgers that live in there and just walking in there alone would be good for her. Badger scent may even jog something in her memory that reminds her she is a badger and...not a cat. Honestly I have seen her wanting to explore and we haven't been allowing her to because we haven't wanted her to be discovered. I think once we took her out there her instincts would kick in and she would want to go on her own or know at the very least what we were doing. We should try to get her up and awake, make sure she is ready for this...we can make this a fun trip for her." Faithfulfeather tried to not think this out, to over think the situation. Honeycream needed her to be strong and not break down yet. She would do it for the both of them.
"Right..." The forest, where he found Lavender originally. Honeycream gazed one last time upon the cub he'd taken in all the moons ago. In another moon or so, she'd have outgrown this den anyways. As it is, the three of them no longer fit inside. It only made sense that it was time she left. He looked at the flowers he brought, one last present, he thought. Something to see her off with. Quickly, with adapt paws, he took a seat and wove the lavender flowers into a final flower crown, while Faithfulfeather woke their sleeping giant. He worked through silent tears, sniffing to try and stop them. This was supposed to be a happy moment, bittersweet. She was growing up, able to care for herself and he should be proud. Maybe...maybe this is what all parents left like when their kits became apprentices or even warriors. It was hard to let go, but he knew it was for the best. As the badger rose and padded out of the small den, he sat up, lavender flower crown hanging from his jaw. Slowly, carefully, he placed it upon her head. A sad smile on his lips as he spoke, "lavenders for Lavender." It was a little joke, one he'd said before when he'd brought lavender flowers to the den. That time hadn't been long after she'd received the name, but now it'd be for the last time. Honeycream stood back and then allowed his wet eyes, no longer leaking tears but wet with ones that would surely fall in time, to linger on the badger one last time. "I guess we should get going then."

Faithfulfeather gave a small smile but remained quiet during their small venture into the forest together. She only paused once to look back at the den that Lavender once resided in before moving on. That was what they were going to have to do anyway...move on. This was for the best even in her heart the she cat felt like crumbling. She would have never guessed she could be so close and love a badger like Lavender. Then again Lavender was a special case and a one of a kind badger... They continued on in silence while the badger walked around sniffing and jumping along in a rather excited manner. She must be enjoying herself thought the warrior to herself but at least Lavender was having a blast. Faithfulfeather knew this was right, that the badger was indeed ready for her next big adventure all on her own. Time seemed to be both fast and slow in its own odd way when they found themselves in a small clearing that felt...that felt to be the right place to be in. With a shaky sigh the black and white she cat turned to Honeycream as she kept a surprisingly steady voice. "Honeycream...I think this is the place. This...this is the place where we should say good bye to our lovely Lavender."
He nodded, his eyes watching as Lavender caught up to the two of them. She'd always been a smart badger, able to track them easily through the woods. They'd taught her much in their time with her, and she had taught them just as much. Gazing to the she-cat beside him he though, yeah, I learned a lot form this little badger cub. That love has found me and stares me down even now in a time of heartache. "Lavender...." He waited until she locked eyes with him, her excitement clear. Not often did they let her out of then den, at least not far for fear of others find her. But today was her day, a day of freedom and release. So he nuzzled her close, just one last time. Waited for Faithfulfeather to say her good-byes and then stood back. "Lavender, darling, its time. You're a big girl now and you've gotta figure the rest out on your own. Chin up, you...you'll do great!" It took all he had to keep a smile on his face, one of pride and love and honor for having been able to get to know her and raise her. He gave her a small nudge, a push in the direction that would lead deeper into the woods. And watched her walk away for the last time.

The black and white she cat watched the lumbering figure of their precious Lavender go deep into the forest and eventually disappear entirely. It took a moment for Faithfulfeather to realize she was crying now, not loud sobs but rather silent tears. Tears that spoke of just how much she grew to love that cub. A cub she never thought she would get so close to but had found it's way into her heart. Lavender was her first child even if she wasn't a cat...she would always be her little baby. The she cat remained silent for a good time but sat next to Honeycream pressing against him. He felt nice next to her. A presence that made the pain she was feeling a little bit bearable. The two of them would get past this and... Now it was just them. They had a future that may not have happened if not for Lavender. It was thanks to her that they found love for one another and she would always be grateful for that. Grateful to Honeycream and Lavender for everything they taught her.
