Coralpaw grumbled to herself as she headed back from the elders' den, cursing as she felt some sap sticking to her paw. She hated tick duty, especially when the apprentice she was assigned to share the duty with didn't even bother showing up. Coralpaw had no idea who was supposed to do it with her, but when she found out, that apprentice was gonna pay.
She spotted Cinderpaw near the apprentices' den, and after checking for any of her other denmates, Coralpaw marched right up to her. "Was it you?" she demanded. "Were you the one who ditched me today? Because buddy, you've got a lot to answer for if it was."

Cinderpaw hated tick duty too. They were gross, she hated the feeling of sap on her paws and the smell of mouse bile. And it didn't help her mission as much as hunting or fighting did. Even a patrol was better. So Cinderpaw just forgot. Supposedly. The little mishap let her sneak around, get a lay of the land. Catch a pair of mice for dinner. She dropped them off before returning to the apprentice den to groom herself when Coralpaw approached her.
Ah, this was her supposed partner. Cinderpaw knew enough about Coralpaw, but wanted Coralpaw to stay as far away from her as possible. So her eyes widened cartoonishly wide and her tongue crept out the side of her mouth. "OH. Was that today? I'm so sorry Coralpaw. I didn't mean to forget. Silly me." When Cinderpaw laid it down, she did it thick. With even her paw knocking the top of her head. How silly of her.
So it was her. Coralpaw's eyes narrowed as she watched Cinderpaw do...whatever that was. Who actually acted like that in real life unless they were having a stroke or something? It grated on Coralpaw that everyone just seemed to accept it from her. Well, today was the day that someone would actually hold Cinderpaw accountable for something--Coralpaw would make sure of it.
"You forgot?" Coralpaw growled, moving in even closer. "Look pal, I don't care if you give everyone Bambi eyes or whatever your deal is, I'm your senior here which means you have to put up with everything I say. And I say you have to march on over to the elders' den right now and apologise to them for skipping."
okay turns out springclan literally doesn't have any elders rn but lets just ignore that

(wow biyuu. way to do your research)
Cinderpaw kept herself from clicking her tongue. Coralpaw was a pain, just like she was yesterday, just like she'd be tomorrow. She had spent enough time here that her temper had tempered, but she still would have loved to shred those ears of hers. She couldn't loose with something as simple as this. Cinderpaw sighed, her cheek puffing out in a pout. "Fine, but I'm not doing just because you came up with some bogus rule."
Coralpaw's eyes narrowed, her anger over the Tick Disaster momentarily replaced by anger over Cinderpaw herself. "What is that? What are you doing with your cheeks? Stop that," she growled, and attempted to un-puff one of Cinderpaw's cheeks by pushing her own paw against it. "You're not a hamster. You're not storing food for the winter. You haven't got mumps. No one just does that naturally."

This chick was getting annoying. When Coralpaw pressed her paw against Cinderpaw's cheek, she had to hold back the urge to lean into it. But as soon as her paw left, Cinder's cheeks puffed up again. And then Cinderpaw let out a sigh. "Well I do. So what's your problem with it? I'm sorry for leaving you on Tick Duty alone. My bad and all that. But that doesn't give you the right to bully me like this." Gee, way to overexaggerate. But she was getting tired of this. Forgetting about the elders, Cinderpaw turned on her heels and ran out of the camp, stumbling a little on the way out to give the additional look before going into a full sprint.
Coralpaw growled, hackles raised. "Oh, I'm bullying you now? Is that what I am? A bully?" Her voice rose to the point where it was attracting some confused stares, but Coralpaw didn't care. This wasn't just about tick duty any more, this was about Coralpaw's honour--and about exposing Cinderpaw for the cheek-puffing, cutesy-faking, tick-avoiding, old-person-hating fraud she was.
"I'll show you bullying!" she shrieked, sprinting after Cinderpaw with renewed vigor. "I'll show you bullying until you're hanging from the cherry blossom tree by your neck!" Once again, Coralpaw had no idea how to make a threat without going way over the line of acceptability.

If Cinderpaw knew how to laugh in a not overly forced and cutesy manner, she would have. But only a snicker left her as the older apprentice began coming after her. To Cinderpaw, there was no honor. But there was exposition. She needed to keep this mission, this persona, no matter what. But her actions betrayed some skill, her darts around seeming too calculated for the ditzy she-cat she made herself out to be. Then she squeezed her way under a tree, just barely small enough to get under the trunk, before pulling herself out the other side and kept running.
Coralpaw grunted with exertion as she chased after the other apprentice, noting the way she darted nimbly through the forest. Was Cinderpaw actually less brain-damaged than she appeared? "Get back here, you little cross-eyed--ack!" She tried to squeeze under the same tree Cinderpaw crawled under, but upon emerging, found herself completely stuck. She wriggled about a few times, her body thrashing wildly from the right to the left, before screaming in frustration. Why did I have to do so much muscle training?!
"CINDERPAW!" she screeched, punching the ground. "STOP RUNNING, I'M STUCK!"

"Oh. Well, Well, Welly, well well. Look what we have here." Cinderpaw turned around faster than probably expected, a laugh bubbling in her throat as she approached Coralpaw. She had to reign in the desire to mess with Coralpaw, snip off a couple hairs from the top of her head. But she needed to stay in character, green eyes widening as she took her time looking over the other apprentice. "I like your new home." Her ears swiveled above her head as she spoke, keeping her voice high as she let out another laugh.
"I know what you're doing, you weird psycho--stop laughing!" Coralpaw snarled, trying to reach out and bat the younger apprentice around the head. She couldn't quite reach out far enough, and her paw stopped just short of its target. "I'm serious, I need you to try pull me out! I hate--I hate tight spaces," she said, her gaze dropping to the ground and brow furrowing in a frustration.

The more Coralpaw snarled, the more that ditzy part of Cinderpaw wanted to keep laughing. This was the plan. And for as much as she considered leaving her there, it wouldn't line up with her character. So she approached Coralpaw, making sure to look a little cautious before getting to one side. "Okay, I'll pull on your scruff and you push with your legs on the count of 3." Cinderpaw grabbed onto her scruff, giving Coral a few moments to brace herself. "1... 2... 3!" And on 3, she started pulling.
Coralpaw grunted as Cinderpaw pulled her by the scruff, eventually letting out an undignified yelp as she was pulled free of the tree root. The pair of them tumbled over with the sheer force of it, landing in a tangle of limbs as a sizeable dust cloud flew up around them. "Ugh," Coralpaw muttered. "You smoothbrained...You knew what you were doing, didn't you? You just wanted to see me suffer."

Cinderpaw coughed up dust as they finally came to a stop. Well, she did it. It wouldn't get Coralpaw off her back, but she did. That's what mattered, right? Now that she laid still in the light, Coralpaw could have caught hints of blue in her eyes. They widened for the first time in genuine surprise at her mutterings, not processing it for a few moments. "Well, you didn't have to follow me so closely. Would have saved us a lot of trouble." She sounded more serious, but still held that fake goofy smile on her face.
“Well you shouldn’t have provoked me like that!” Coralpaw seethed, shifting her weight around experimentally. Nothing hurt that bad—the only thing wounded was her pride. “And cut out making that stupid expression, it makes your face look all...” She squinted, taking a good look at Cinderpaw’s face. Her eyes were widened, and Coralpaw could see a blue tinge in the other she-cat’s eyes that she hadn’t seen before. It would be a nice face, if she stopped putting on that moronic act all the time.
