Ghostcrown hesitated at the entrance to the nursery, looking forlornly back at the camp entrance. Firetooth had agreed to stay with the apprentices, but he hated to leave so soon after Crowpaw's return. They had missed out on so much time together. But it would have to wait. Igziq demanded he speak to Jetfire while she was present, and there was no use delaying the inevitable now.
The dark-furred tom eased his way into the den, blinking at the low light until he found the young she-cat. A gentle smile tugged at his lips, but it fell away too soon, replaced by a serious look. He hated to do this to her. "Jetfire, he murmured, "this is The Huntress. She's the mother of my kits and she brought some news that you need to know." Did they have to tell her now? Last time he had spoken to JEtfire like this, it was to tell her she was pregnant. That wound was still raw, and here he was making it worse.
He couldn't stop himself. Bounding across the den, he rested his forehead against her and murmured, "I'm so, so sorry, I don't want to tell you this, not now."

Jetfire was lying in her nest, her kits going out with Breezestep and Firetooth so that she could have some time alone to try an recover and to think. She should have been sleeping, but with one glance it was easy to see that her time alone had been anything but restful. Her eyes were swollen, tears tracks staining paths under her eyes as she tried to make up her mind on Firetooth's offer. His words still ringing in her ear "you still haven't recovered from your first kitting; the internal damage is trying to heal while at the same time your womb is stretching with the new, growing kits. That's a dangerous combination. It's certainly possible to have these kits, but at the very least it'll be a painful and difficult pregnancy and birth, and at worst...it could be deadly"
She wasn't in SunClan and yet she still couldn't escape Bloodystar's shadow. He had told her that she would never be able to escape from him, that even if she died he would drag her back to life to be by his side again. These kits she was carrying would be a constant reminder of him, a living reminder of her living nightmare "As a Medicine Cat, I personally do not recommend going through with this pregnancy. If you want these kits, I'll support you will all the medical knowledge I have, but if you do not want to go through with this...there are...herbs, a type of vine, I believe, that will settle things with minimal damage to yourself. It's your decision"
It was her decision... but that made it even harder stuck making an impossible choice, and she didn't have much more time to decide. The herbs would only end the pregnancy early on, and she knew she wasn't in a good mindset to be making such decisions. The silver she-cat slowly lifted her head, offering his a weak smile that faded as he spoke and she realized who it was that he had with him. Jetfire was probably a rather shocking sight for a cat unaware of her condition. Face sunken in, hip bones jutting out past her skinny frame, her midsections still wrapped in cobwebs and herbs to keep her wound from becoming infected. Even with the food and care she was receiving now she look like a mere wisp of a cat, one whom had obviously been crying for a while now "Ghostcrown... Whats wrong?" he had stayed so calm, held her paw while she cried onto his chest while she received the news. She could see the pain in his eyes
Igziq wordlessly followed behind Ghostcrown as he led the way to the nursery. She could feel the stares of a select few of his Clanmate, who no doubt heard the chaos outside. She didn't care. She didn't live with them, nor did she care for their arbitrary rules. And if Ghostcrown really cared for them, then he would have never had her kits in the first place. The smell of milk let her know that they were approaching, and she readied herself to push Ghostcrown along.
As they entered, she couldn't help but curl her lip at the sight of the she-cat. This is who he gave up his kittens for? This wreck of a cat? She made no effort to hide it. Ghostcrown, not Jetfire, disgusted her at the most fundamental level. She glared at Ghostcrown as he ran forward to nuzzle. "Aww, you care about your wittle family now? How cute. Tell her before I give her my details."
Ghostcrown shot the she-cat a hard glare. He was growing tired of her relentless criticism of a she-cat she had never met. Jetfire was stronger than Igziq ever could be, and now that he was back at her side, it angered him to see her ignore that. He had held his tongue and ignored her barbed implications that he had only saved his friend out of lust, but she was crossing a line to make the same comments in front of the queen herself.
"Enough," he growled to Igziq. "You've done enough. I'll tell her, and you can be quiet."
He stepped back from Jetfire and took a deep breath, his gaze averted as he prepared to say the words again. They stuck in his throat but it was easier this time.
"The Huntress and Crowpaw went to check on the SunClan camp after the fire. And they..." he hesitated, then looked up at Jetfire sorrowfully, his voice cracking, "they found Raypaw's ashes. She got stuck inside one of the dens.. I didn't know she was even in the camp, nobody knew she was there, it was so loud and... and she's gone now. I just told Desertpaw and Spiritpaw, they aren't taking it well."

Raypaw.... though she hadn’t spent much time with them since they were kits, she could still remember the fiery young she-cat that had played so often with her younger siblings. How she would make even grown warriors shrink back in her ferocity. The thought of her spirit being extinguished in such a way made her eyes cloud over with grief for Ghostcrown, the look of anguish he was wearing finally making sense. She wanted to ask if they were sure it was Raypaw... she’s after all we’re impossible to identify for certain, but if they hadn’t been sure they would have told Dessertpaw and Spiritpaw that she was dead... Ghostcrown wouldn’t have hurt them like that otherwise
Jetfire pressed her nose to Ghostcrown’s cheek “I wish I could find the right words to say” she put her paw onto his, in the moment ignoring the she-cat glaring at them “but nothing that I say could help ease the loss of your daughter... But I can be here for you” she looked over to The huntress “Your daughter was beautiful and strong. She always stood up for what she believed in, a she-cat that would make any mother proud. I’m sorry for your loss”
She could help the growl that escaped her lips as Ghostcrown spoke. No. He did not give her all the details, he was letting her off easy. It wasn't important anyway. That's why she was here, to make sure Jetfire knew what she did to her family. Her blazing blue eyes settled on Jetfire with a look that Ghostcrown would be all too familiar with: the same unconquerable anger that Crow's eyes had in them during the fire.
"Thank you. I'd expect nothing less of her. She her tongue was more venomous than a viper's bite, but..." Her voice trailed off. "Your 'friend' here was mincing his words. She didn't 'get stuck' in one of the dens. She was forgotten. Ghostcrown forgot his own daughter to save someone else. You. He gave up his daughter for you." The anger in her eyes was not brutish, such method was not her style. She preferred to pick her prey apart piece by piece. She turned to look a Ghostcrown. "Now, is there anything else you want to add or should I say more?"

The gray she-cat shrunk back as if she had been slapped, her blue eyes shooting to Ghostcrown still not quite sure of what the Huntress meant. She hadn't even been awake when Ghostcrown had come in to save her, Bloodystar having drugged her to keep her from making a run for it during the battle... If he hadn'tsaved her and her kits, well there was little doubt that they would have shared the same fate as his daughter "You shouldn't say such things" she swallowed hard, turning back to the huntress trying to brave for Ghostcrown even though her voice quivered "Ghostcrown loves your children, can't you see that he is hurting?" her breathe hitched causing an unnatural pause "If your only goal here is to make him suffer you should leave, both he and your kits know about her passing now" it was the type of mental warfare that she was all to familiar with, the kind Bloodystar used on her over and over again until he had broken her into pieces beyond recognition
As Jetfire tried to reassure him he squeezed his eyes tightly shut, feeling his throat begin to constrict as another wave of despair hit him. His legs were weak and trembling, and it took all of his willpower not to crumble to the ground like he had when he first learned the news. As it was, he couldn't speak; he could barely breathe as her gentle words just made the loss hit that much harder, made it feel more real. Informing his kittens of their loss was one thing - there he was in charge, he had to be brave, but there were only adults here now and he just wanted to cry.
Silent tears rolled down his face and he leaned into Jetfire, resting his forehead against hers, wanting nothing more but to slip silently into her embrace and stay there forever. But Igziq was still there, still merciless, and she could not give him even this one moment alone.
"Don't," he croaked, feeling the cold air rush in as the queen jerked away from him. He didn't try to meet her gaze after that, burning with shame beneath his fur. It wasn't Jetfire's fault. She couldn't have known, she never even asked him to save her, that had been his choice and his alone. It wasn't fair for the grieving mother to blame her, and it was even less fair that a small part of Ghostcrown blamed her too. She didn't choose this, but rescuing her was the root cause of all his trouble, and he couldn't forget that even if he tried.
Sniffing, Ghostcrown summoned his strength to look at Igziq again. Exhausted but hard, he leveled his gaze at her, shifted protectively in front of Jetfire - keeping her safe from an attack, and hiding his face. "I chose to save Jetfire. She never asked me to." He was repeating himself, he had already told her this, but if she was going to blame Jetfire to her face, he was going to defend her. "You'll never make me regret pulling her out of that fire and saving her life. I'm-- I'm sorry Raypaw died, I would do anything to bring her back, but I can't. I miss her already but there's nothing I can do now. Her death is my fault, and mine alone."
She could see the fractures in Jetfire's wall. The quiver in her voice, the hard swallow, the hitched breathing. She could barely hold herself together. Poor thing. She chuckled at her words and shook her head from side to side. She completely misunderstood her intentions. Maybe she'd have to make those more clear. She opened her mouth to speak when Ghostcrown raised his voice again. He summoned some of what little strength he had left, all to meet her gaze. Funny. She curled her lip up.
"Hmpf. So you don't regret saving this cat, at all, when you could have saved the life of your kit." Her eyes blazed with the same anger the Crow's burned with. "That doesn't sound like a caring father to me. Parents should give everything for their kits. But you could not even give up some whelp." She glared at Jetfire. "I can smell your kits. Be careful. If some other she-cat catches his eye, he'll given up on you and your kits in an instant." She paused. "Maybe even leaving you screaming as smoke cooks you from the inside."

Jetfire was crumbling before their eyes, as she scrambled to hold the pieces together as doubt and fear worked together to push them apart. Not in Ghostcrown's decisions, but her own. His words before making more sense now, as to why he couldn't forgive her. No she hadn't asked him to save her, but she still had caused Raypaws death... She had still caused him to be forced from the clan... She had still pinned her suicide attempt onto him... She had called him a murderer....
All of this was sending her back to a much darker place mentally, even as she tried to defend Ghostcrown from his ex "Just leave..." she replied breathily, more of a plea than a command, trying to hold it together until the Huntress was gone
A snarl ripped through his jaws, "I said stop it, she is not my—"
Jetfire's quiet words gave him pause, and he let out a shaky breath. He shouldn't be putting her through this. Igziq had said what she needed to, she had already dealt her damage, there was no need to keep putting his friend through all of this. To ask her to keep suffering because of something he had done.
"Enough, she's right. You're done. Go." Ghostcrown hesitated a fraction of a second, glanced sorrowfully at the queen from the corner of his eye. "I'll go too," he finished softly.
He pulled himself to his paws and headed for the exit, his tail dragging. There were so many unspoken words left on his tongue, he didn't know how to begin to speak to her now, but Jetfire wanted to be alone now. She didn't need him, didn't want him, she needed her space and he would give it.
Igziq shrugged and looked between the two... lovers? Maybe they were, maybe they weren't, but she thought they just kept denying it. Denial did not convince her of anything. "Ghostcrown, remember our little meeting tonight hmmm? I still expect you to be there, and not consoling her." She knew her words were not necessary, but she wanted to see him squirm. She rarely wanted to see cats suffer, he deserved every moment of it. The bengal pushed past Ghostcrown towards the exit before looking back at Jetfire. "I do hope your are a good mother. You'll need to be around him." With that she left the den.
