Jetfire licked behind Secretkit's ears, trying to soothe he son who was trying to be brave but it wasn't hard to see the fear behind his blue gaze. It was finally time, time for the surgery that he needed to fix the hernia that was only continuing to grow and it was becoming more urgent to get it fixed before it burst accidentally while doing normal kit games
"BUT MOM... I wanna keep my bubble" he pouted, poking at the bubble that moved under the pressure of his paw
"Secretkit, we have to fix your bubble so that you can start training with your siblings. Its almost time for you to become an apprentice, wouldn't you rather take care of it now instead of missing out on your training?" the young kit at her side looked between her and the supplies that firetooth had gathered, and the other cats he had brought in to help with the complicated procedure
"You know, part of your apprentice training is all about how to be brave," Ghostcrown mewed thoughtfully. "I bet your mentor would be really impressed if you showed them you were braver than all the other kits by getting your bubble fixed now."
The mostly-black tom winked at him. His ears twitched toward Jetfire, listening for any sign of her reaction. Would she be angry he was interfering in her parenting? Secretkit wasn't his son. He wanted to help her, though, and that meant helping her family too. Focusing his attention on the queen and ignoring her kits wasn't going to help anyone... and he liked the little ones. They were difficult from his litter in a different way, yet they still reminded him of his own. It was a reminder both painful and wistful, but it meant that looking at the little litter reignited his fatherly instincts.
Firetooth was silent, turned away with his back facing the Queen and kit as he went over the various herbs he had collected for this procedure one last time. It seemed almost redundant, considering he had spent most of the previous day doing the exact same thing, only taking breaks to draw out the steps of the process in the dirt. Ghostcrown had to practically drag the Medicine Cat to his nest to make him go to sleep. But he had to be sure; asthma, heart conditions, and even broken or lost limbs he could deal with, but this was beyond what most basic and even advanced herb knowledge covered. He would have to physically cut open the kit in order to push the bubble back in. That wasn't something he was going to take lightly.
Taking a deep breath, he used his claw to separate three poppy seeds from the pile - more than enough to put Secretkit out like a light for a good portion of the day - along with some Lamb's Ear leaves for strength and Ash Tree Seeds that would hopefully numb the kit to any sort of pain or uncomfortableness while he was asleep. As simple as the procedure was, Firetooth couldn't afford to take any chances with a kit. "Ghostcrown's right, Secretkit," he meowed, sounding somewhat disinterested to cover up the anxiety he was feeling. "Getting this bubble fixed will prove you're even braver than Chimerastar." Not particularly a difficult milestone to pass, but the kit didn't know that. "When you're ready, eat these herbs, okay?"

Secretkit kept his paw firmly on his bubble, and while the mention of being braver than Chimerastar caught his attention clearly it wasn't enough to temp the kit into taking the herbs that had been placed at his paws as his lips turned up in disgust "I don't have to fix my bubble to be brave" he shook his head back and forth "I'd rather go fight MoonClan!! Or WinterClan!! That sounds like more fun, and I get to keep my bubble" he said matter of factly what he saw as a huge flaw in their logic "Besides you said that I'm going to have a scar like mommy when you take my bubble, then all the other kits are going to laugh at me" he ducked back behind Jetfire's legs, peering out from behind them at the other cats
Jetfire nodded appreciatingly at Ghostcrown and Firetooth but their attempts at coaxing him didn't seem to be working "But Secretkit, scars are cool" she pulled him out gently, laying down so that he couldn't hide between her legs anymore "Every scar is unique, every scar has a story behind it' she purred, trying to hide her own anxiety about what was going to happen next "When he is done you will have a scar that only you have, no one else" she touched her nose to his "It will just make you even more special"
Secretkit didn't seem completely convinced "But scars are ugly, just look at Chimerastar. No girl wants him, only Firetooth"
"Chimerastar being ugly has nothing to do with his scars, that's just his personality," Firetooth remarked, rolling his eyes in mild exasperation at the kits' theatrics. Who would've thought that this would be the hard part? "Everybody has scars, Secretkit. Even me." Lifting his front paw to his neck with a sigh, he pushed away both the fur and the squirrel-pelt he wore around his shoulders to reveal a surprisingly nasty-looking, but completely healed scar that circled his neck like a kittypet collar. He let Secretkit - along with Jetfire and Ghostcrown - gawk at it for a moment before covering it with the squirrel-pelt again. "It's just as your mother said; they aren't ugly, they tell a story; what you've been through, and how you've overcome the obstacles against you. I could probably grab any random warrior that passed by this den, and they'd be able to show you a scar they have...plus if you don't get this bubble removed I can't in good conscience as a Medicine Cat permit you to become an apprentice, so eat up, squirt."

Secretkit tilted his head staring up at Firetooth as he revealed his scar, her had to admit that it looked pretty cool but only because her had it covered with the squirrel scarf "Fine fine" he grumbled, shuffling his feet "On ONE condition" he smirked, grinning until the point of his canines hung out slightly from underneath his top lip "You have to say that a Pangolin gave me my scar" he seemed rather proud of himself for coming up with the idea "I don't know what that is, but it sounds like a cool story"
His eyes widened slightly as he took in Firetooth's scar for the first time. What had happened to his brother? He was a medicine cat, he shouldn't be fighting in any battles, but that didn't look like an ordinary fight wound either. It was too even, too exacting, if Ghostcrown didn't know better he would think the tom had been executed. His fur fluffed, uncomfortable with the thought.
That was a talk for another day. He glanced away as the scar was covered once again and nodded his support. Ghostcrown had scars, but none were very unique or interesting, so he didn't bother to share them. They were the normal nicks and scuffs from a fighting life.
"Er... sure, a pangolin, why not," Ghostcrown agreed. He wasn't sure what that was either, but it was a harmless lie. "Ready to take your drugs?"

“Drugs? Momma what are drugs?” He asked tilting his head to the side curiously “Are they tastier than herbs?” Jetfire took a deep breathe trying to compose herself. Despite the tense situation, it was hard not to smile at her spunky son’s attitude “Just eat your herbs” Jetfire chuckled, “We can tell the others whatever story you want once you wake up”
Secretkit look down at the herbs, still rather disgusted by them “and I want a treat to get the bad taste out of my mouth” but he lowered his muzzle and lapped up the herbs with disdain. Looking back up at Jetfire and Ghostcrown “I thought you said I would sleep” he grumbled, believing that if they put him to sleep he wouldn’t really have to taste the herbs
What in Starclan's name was a pangolin? A type of bat? Granted, the kit himself didn't seem to know, so Firetooth decided it was best not to dwell on it. It was probably just some creature Secretkit made up. "We'll get you a tasty mouse or something after this is over," the Medicine Cat reassured. "The herbs don't make you fall asleep right away, just be patient and you'll fall asleep in no time." Which meant that soon it would be his own go-time. Glancing over his pile of herbs once again, the Medicine Cat mentally readied himself to start the procedure.

Jetfire groomed the kit as the waited for him to sleep, her tongue lapping at his pelt as he kept rambling on about how cool the creature he had mentioned was, and how mean Firetooth was for making him eat something so gross. But his words started coming slower and slower, interrupted by yawns even as he insisted that he wasn't sleepy. Soon enough his protests stopped and his eyes closed, Jetfire gently lifted his paw as it fell back down without any reactions "He is asleep" GidgetGal
With Jetfire's confirmation, Firetooth slowly rose to his paws and walked over to Secretkit's side with cautious but steady steps, taking a moment to take a breath and steal himself. He could do this. He would do this, so that Secretkit could live an easier and more fulfilling life as an apprentice and a warrior. Heck, with how strong-willed and confident this kit was, he could maybe even become leader someday. "Alright," he finally meowed, mind completely focused on the task at paw. "Let's get started."
...
It hadn't been a particularly quick procedure - a good hour or two by the Medicine Cat's estimation - but it was certainly a successful one. The bubble had been pushed back into Secretkit's stomach without any complications whatsoever, to Jetfire's relief and Firetooth's pride. Now, the little tom was curled up beside his mother with a matching belt of cobwebs and leaves circling his abdomen. All that was left to do was wait until the patient slept off the herbs. The ginger tom padded back into the Medicine Den, having stepped out for a few minutes for a well-deserved drink of water. Glancing over at the Queen, he smiled slightly when he noticed Secretkit snoring. "Your kit's quite the trooper, I'll give him that."

Jetfire refused to leave, even as Firetooth worked on her son. She couldn’t help but wonder if they had made the right decision. What if Secretkit passed on during the surgery? What if he could would have lived longer if they had just left the bubble own? Either was she was determined not to leave his side even as her stomach flipped circles. She had little choice, she and to place her trust in Firetooth. That his skilled paws would be able to help her son.
it wasn’t until his wound was closed and he was sleeping peacefully at her side that the tension in her shoulders began to dissipate. She laid curled around him, her eyes locked onto the rose and fall of his chest as she waited on him to awaken. “He has always been a strong one” she agreed with Firetooth’s comment though her eyes never left the slewing form of Secretkit “He always acts so big and brave it’s sometimes hard to believe that he is still only a kit”
