Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Somehow, in some way, they had each been cursed β or blessed β with a quirk that made them different from the rest. No matter how many different ways βwhyβ was phrased, there were no answers.
For Chasingkit, βwhyβ was quite a common word popping out of his mouth. The black smoke tabby tom was insatiably curious. It was seen as both a promising virtue and a disastrous fault. For those willing to humor him, he was a roiling ball of energy that only seemed to brighten with every new question. He loved to fill his brain with as much knowledge as anyone could give him. But for those who saw him as a bane, his inability to silence himself frequently got him into trouble.
Perhaps that was one of the reasons he was so close to his sister, far closer to her than any of the rest of his littermates. They were both two peas in a very strange pod. They stuck together like glue, refusing to part, except during the night, when β to some β they needed one another most. Sablekit was always deep in dreamland, where more often than not sheβd return with tales of her adventures and Chasingkit would ask all sorts of questions to keep her talking. While she was in slumber, however, he was always awake, gazing up at the stars. Nothing enchanted him more than that endless black sky, adorned with sparkling, finite jewels.
Being a nocturnal cat due to his inquisitive nature only made him all the more an oddity in the frozen wasteland that was WinterClan. His clan was diurnal β they maneuvered during the day and rested at night. While the silence when the sun went down and the moon rose high in the sky was peaceful and allowed him his thoughts, it was also quite lonely. He couldnβt remember the last time heβd obliged his clanβs schedule. Granted, his self-enforced sleep cycle often got him into a sticky situation here or there, but he had nothing to worry about... Yet. Of course, there was the occasional denmate that found it peculiar he slept away the light hours only to be restless and mutter to himself at their bedtime, but not a soul had yet to call him on it.
As for the siblings, they understood their quirks and respected the otherβs longing for adventure.
Tonight was no different. Chasingkit sat next to his sister, peering the best he could at the patches of sky visible through the nursery entrance. Normally heβd be out in the chill, but he often felt uneasy leaving his sisterβs side, and he felt Sablekit deserved at least one night in a warm nest instead of curled around him, desperate for warmth.
βOne day,β he whispered to no one in particular, but hoped Sable could hear him wherever she was, βIβm going to fly to the stars. I bet itβs beautiful. Maybe I could even bring one back to you, if I asked nicely.β
"That would be wonderful, I think." Sablekit murmured blinking awake at the soft sound of her litter-mate's voice. Her blue eyes were still glazed with sleep as she watched him struggle to glimpse the stars that glittered the sky above them. "Did you want to go out?" she asked stifling a yawn. It would be a moment before the she-cat was fully awake and comprehensive. Luckily for Chasingkit tonight she was too far into dreamland that she couldn't hear him and comeback.
"'sides I know you sleep better outside" this time she couldn't fight off the yawn as she rose to her paws and began to stretch. She had grown used to sleeping out in the cold curled up with her brother and dozing off as he recanted the adventures he would some daytake to the stars. It almost felt cruel to make him stay inside at night knowing how much he loved to be under a blanket of stars. "Or I can sleep by the entrance."
The black smoke tabby blinked and gazed down at his sister, having not expected her to respond. Wide gold eyes softened and a small smile turned his lips upward, a purr emanating from his core and quietly vibrating outward. βItβs alright, you sacrifice too much for my comfort. Itβs time I repaid your kindness.β
He leaned down and buttered her head gently with his, nuzzling her cheek and licking her forehead quickly. As she stood, he frowned a bit and took a step back to allow her the room to stretch.
βThereβs no need, Sable, really. Iβm sorry I interrupted your dreams.β Guilt gnawed at him. βHow about...β He trailed off, worrying his cheek. It was a bold proposal and one that had his stomach twisting, but it was the rational thing to do. They were growing up, perhaps it was time to start acting it.
βWhy donβt you stay here and go back to sleep? Iβll head out.β He smiled a bit and nudged her gently as his way of reassuring her. βIβll be back at your side before anyone else wakes up.β
