Muscles coiled and released in a calculated leap, his outstretched paws flashed down toward the bird with deadly precision. He was a few inches short as he took to the air, relying on the strength from his hindquarters pushing off the ground to propel him perfectly into line. Too late he became aware of the error in his memory, his back leg a phantom behind him, and with half the force he expected, his graceful attack turned into a short stumble. He hit the ground hard and rolled, snatching at the little bird as it escaped from between his paws and took off into the sky.
Singedwolf scowled. He might think it was symbolic if it wasn't his lunch that had just flown away.
The three-legged tom heaved himself to his paws and huffed as he sought out the next piece of prey. Once, he had early hopes that he would regain all of his legs in his sleep, but his nightmares and dreams had always been too detailed and realistic. He would have thought he was awake if it wasn't for the fact that the instant one piece of prey disappeared, another took its place a few tree-lengths up. The hunting wouldn't end until he woke up or caught something and in his current sorry state, the latter wasn't likely. He had a lot of practice to do.

Littlestar waited patiently as the bird flew away from between his claws, sliding forward so silently that it was only possible in a dream. Her long fur brushed against his, though he would feel the way her ribs were twisted underneathe her long pelt "I do believe this is the first time I have ever seen your prey escape you" she mused, a slight purr of amusement rumbling in her throat as she pressed her nose to his cheek "Its good to see you" she pulled away for a moment frowning as she took in the sight of his missing limb "You're hurt" she fussed moving to where the leg should have been running her paws over what remained "Did Bloodyrondo do this to you?" looking up with fury burning through the gold
That day was still much of a blurr, and having been away for so long and with no way to really know what was going on while she tried to bend her broken body back together again
So much for realistic dreams, he grumbled to himself as the ghost appeared in the corner of his eye. He was here to hunt, not have dream therapy. His subconscious might think it was being helpful by summoning a mirage of Littlestar here, but it certainly was not, and he wished he knew how to make her go away. It was a poor fake, too skinny and too graceful. Just as touchy as he remembered, though.
"Damn, really? No wonder I'm having so much trouble hunting tonight. Thanks for the reminder!" Singedwolf pulled away as she reached for his stump, his tail lashing, but he kept his eyes on her. The corners of his mouth curled up in disgust. "You think that little of me now, huh? I'm just a tired old man who can't defend myself against the likes of Bloodystar? Ha." He might have laughed more if it wasn't his own twisted brain making that point. Was this some complicated way for him to tell himself he needed to retire? He figured that one out already, thanks, could he return to his peaceful dream now?

Littlestar wasn't put off by his prickly attitude, moving forward to cusp his head between her paws concern sparkling in her eyes "I asked you a question Singedwolf" she spoke gently, her paws stroking his face lightly "Please don't make me worry" she pleaded not letting him go. Seeing him in such a state was like having claws gripped around her heart and ready to pull it out. She looked directly into his eyes, searching for answers that he seemed to not want to tell "I need to know" her hard expression softening to worry
Singedwolf tensed, his fur flaring as he tested her grip, but she was holding him tighter this time. Reluctantly, he let her hold him.
"Of course it wasn't Bloodystar," he growled back. "I told you, that poor excuse of a warrior couldn't hurt me if he tried. Not with his own claws and teeth. No, it was the same guard that did you in." His gaze flashed down to her sides as he remembered now how damaged she had been last time they'd met. Littlestar had been broken from her fall before the massive tom dragged her before the leader to be branded and imprisoned, but his crushing strength hadn't helped when he rebroke her bones. "Mountain. This happened because of you. I was defending your body and he did this."
Singedwolf wrenched free of her again, anything to avoid her eyes. The spiteful words didn't make him feel any better. He might feel bad for the cruelty if she had been here instead of just a figment of his dream.

Littlestar flinched, her gaze and fall falling to the ground. The familiar ache of guilt inside her chest building with each of the harsh words he spoke. She had done everything she could for her clan, and it still wasn’t enough to let those that she loved safe from harm. She had taken on the burden of the sun God’s death onto her own shoulders, and was ready to face what ever punishment awaited her for her crimes. She had acted alone so that only she would have to answer for what she had done, yet it seemed it still wasn’t enough “Singedwolf...” she was starting to crack, raw emotion leaking from them like steam from boiling water “It was my fault...” there was no going back and fixing it now, no way to reverse the damage that had been done “Mountain amy have done this to you, but it is I that caused it...” she began to tremble, reality slowly setting in. That whole day was blur that she still had trouble remembering...
Did he blame her? He was surprised to hear her saying that; he had thought about that day countless times, and he had long ago resolved that he could only place a small amount of blame on her. Everything that happened was ultimately her fault but the exact events had been too far from her control. So why was she bringing this up now? His only guess was his mind was trying to play some stupid therapy game. Reluctantly, he played along. Lashing out at Littlestar hadn't helped, so now he had to try the more honest route.
"Sure, you had a part to play," he agreed, unsympathetic to her anguish, "you were the one to invite him into the clan, the one to give him power and take away his deity, to use your enemy's power to do so. But I don't blame you either. You're vulnerable and other cats like it. Like you." He paused. "I don't think they're predatory, either. Other cats like that you're soft and care about them, it makes you a good leader in their eyes, even if it gave Bloodyrondo the opportunity he wanted. I can't be upset with you for following your nature."
Singedwolf's ears twitched back as he looked away. Under his breath, he muttered: "Though if your softness hadn't rubbed off on me, I might have won that battle. Too focused on keeping you safe to remember all his tricks. I suppose I can blame you for that."

She looked up slowly, "You still don't see it do you?" a tear slid down her cheek as she spoke "You are always talking about protecting me...." her voice quivered, the cracks that had appeared early starting to open wider "That day, you whisked me away as my parents laid dead. You kept me safe as I navigated a whole new clan, gave me advice on love and politics. No matter what, I have always had you by my side" more tears soon followed, following in the same path as their predecessor "I worked my way all that way to High Priestess, had the biggest army in the forest at my disposal, and yet... " she paused, letting her nose graze his "You still protected me. You protected me, even when it cost you so much" she couldn't help but look at his leg, her stomach twisting into knots "But... I'm not a cat worthy of your loyalty Singedwolf. I trust to easily, make decisions to quickly, but the worst.... Those that I care for always get hurt because of my mistakes. Even with all this power, I still couldn't protect you. I couldn't protect my family. I couldn't protect my clan" she shook, pulling away and turning her back on him "I'm still the same stupid kit that you saved all those moons ago"
"I've been telling you that for moons, little bird," he grumbled. "Haven't I told you that you make bad choices? Haven't I advised against most of what you've done? I've failed to teach you how to be cold, and most of your clan would think that's a good thing, I told you they like you. Your icebrained mate still wants to try and rescue you."
If this was supposed to be his mental therapy session, why did it feel like he was the one trying to reassure her? That wasn't how this relationship was supposed to work. She made stupid choices, he criticized them, and through some unknown influence things turned out okay in the end.
"You were never supposed to protect me," he reminded her. "I'm your guard, I'm supposed to keep you safe, and you've died and been imprisoned on my watch. If your father was here, he'd dig a deep pit in the ice and bury me alive down there." He smiled grimly. "Not worthy of my loyalty, huh? I think you've forgotten who I am."
His brother had killed cats, sure; Mountain's rampages had crushed a kit or two. But those were accidents. Singedwolf had hunted down innocent kits and slaughtered them intentionally. He was far less worthy than Littlestar, he was worse than Mountain after all, and it was a twisted joke for her to think otherwise.

"Singedwolf... I'm not dead" she paused, he thought this was a normal dream. That her presence here was some sort of illusion or some dark corner of his own mind "I was taken from the prison, and I'm being held far away from SunClan... Skipstep is looking for me, because I spoke to him in his dreams to" he raised her paw to gently touch his cheek, the one that had been terribly burned "You are not just a guard to me Singedwolf... You are much more than that" she was still crying, not trying to hide it any longer "You are the cat who has been with me every step of the way here in SunClan. While other have turned their backs on me, I have never doubted you even or a moment. You have been more of a father to me than Goldenstar ever was"
Uncertainty flashed in the depths of his dark gaze. He wanted to believe her. Oh, how nice it would be to think she had a rescue team on the way, that she had evaded her captors, that everything was on the path to being right again. It would be such a relief to trick himself into believing such a plot. Maybe that was why it was so difficult.
You have been more of a father to me than Goldenstar ever was.
His head jerked up as his mouth moved in a wordless gasp, doubt hewn into his hard features, shock erasing years from his eyes. Maybe he had seen her in a daughterly light sometimes, the errant child he had never wanted, but he had never entertained the thought for long, never voiced it to himself. To hear Littlestar admit it so openly took his breath away, and he knew it truly was her.
"It is you," he reflected, his eyes wide with wonder. Singedwolf took a step back and looked her over, shaking his head slightly. "How is that possible? I'm not," he hesitated, "you know." Not a true SunClan cat: he had never really followed the ways of their god. Not a true WinterClan cat: he'd never followed the stars either. He had never taken comfort in religion or an afterlife or a deity.
And then, reflecting over what he had already said to her, the tom felt a worm of embarrassment, enough to drown out any warm feelings she had left within him. "Course I've been with you. That's my job, nothing else to it," he gruffly amended.

Littlestar moved until her nose rested in the fur along his neck, taking in his scent "Yes it is me..." her tears soaking into his long fur "You may not believe in the Sun God...." she lifted her head until she could look into his eyes "but you believe me. That's more than enough for me to reach you in your dreams" she paused taking in a deep breath trying to reign in her emotions "Its called dream walking, but it is dangerous and I can not stay long. I needed to know that you were alive, to convince you that I am still alive" she swallowed hard "But for how much longer I am uncertain... If I don't make it back to you... I just... I needed you to know how much you meant to me"
He rested in her embrace, tentatively resting in her warmth. It really was her. She was here, alive, and he couldn’t shake the thought. But he shook his head slowly and turned his face from hers.
“Then you should go. Stop wasting your breath on me and go save yourself. You don’t expect me to swoop in, do you?” His eyes narrowed. “I’m far away now.” There was nothing the broken tom could do to save her, she had to be strong enough to help herself.

"No, I will have to get myself out of this one on my own" she stroked his cheek gently looking up at him knowing that this could very well be the last time that they ever got speak to one another "Some how I will find my way back to you" her form was beginning to fade, something in the real world was waking her from her slumber "Singedwolf...I will find my way back to you" and then she was gone
