Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The Trouble Trio were well known throughout SpringClan by now. Coralpaw, Raggedpaw, and Servalpaw, who she's been saddled with the task of training. While she didn't know them well individually, she knew the only tom of the posse was a bit airheaded (though the same could be said for all three of them). Dancingdragon had her work cut out for her for sure; the trusted strolled to the apprentices' den early the next dawn, and wasting no time beckoned her newly appointed apprentice out of it. "Servalpaw? C'mon, you're wasting daylight."
"Wastin' daylight? Me?" He sounded offended as he trotted up to her, a large grin on his face. He was very excited to finally start training, so excited that when he paused by her side, he couldn't help but to tap his feet. It was a strange habit, one he'd developed, as his mother often told him, right out of the oven. He looked a little groggy - that happened when you stayed up all night with your pals chattering about what it meant now that they could leave camp legally and all of the things that they were going to do now that they had the joys of freedom - but that didn't stop his cheerful attitude. "Whatchya got on the plate this morning, boss?"
Overlooking his odd tapdance, Dancingdragon quickly ushered him ahead of her and towards the camp entrance. "I'm going to teach you how to hunt and then we're gonna leave Jetstar a little surprise, okay?" And a most nefarious surprise it would be, a mischievous glint in her gaze not unlike the one that her apprentice often had among his friends.
He caught the look in her eye and he found himself grinning. A normal cat might be a bit taken back by the glint in her gaze, but it excited him. He had secretly feared that he would get a square as a mentor, but hopefully this was a good sign. "Great!" he chirped, tail moving through the air in excitement. "I'll get to tell the other two that I'm the leader's favorite because I left her a gift first. They'll never live it down," he mewed, before heading towards camp. Maybe he should have waited for Dancingdragon to lead the way, but what could he say? He was nothing if not excitable. "Comin', boss?" he called over his shoulder as he reached the entrance to camp.
"Oh, for sure, for sure. Jetstar will definitely remember you after this." Maybe it was mean, setting him up like this, but the tom had a reputation around camp already so what did it hurt to use that to her advantage? In return she allowed him to stay ahead of her rather than taking the lead, curious as to where Servalpaw would choose for their hunting spot. "I'm guessing you and your friends have familiarized yourselves with the territory already, hm? No need for a tour?" No need for beating around the bush either.
He flicked his ear, trying to tell whether or not he should be embarassed at the call out. "Yeah, we went right after our vigil!" he lied, hoping she couldn't read him too badly. "That's why I was so sleepy this morning!" He feigned a yawn to emphasize his point, but his tail flicked playfully. Even if his mentor did know that the terrible trio probably had gotten their paws into the outside world a little faster than they should have, what could she do about it now?
By now, they had been walking a few minutes, and Servalpaw stopped. There was a heavy scent of bird, and although he was not nearly skilled enough to catch a bird, he still motioned to his mentor that he noticed the scent. "How bout here, boss?" Ambitious, maybe, but maybe this would be how he could really stand out to Jetstar.
Dancingdragon wasn't in the business of punishing retroactively. Back in her heyday, when she was still Dancingkit and not the snarky Trusted she was today, she'd been reemed out countless times by the clan's authority for sneaking out. Plus, it wasn't like the trio was ever really alone; kits just weren't perceptive enough to realize they were being tailed.
"Good enough," she hummed, an amused but faintly impressed sound. He was certainly up for a challenge for his first hunting exercise. "So before we begin, what do you think are the keys to hunting birds?"
Well, that was a question. He tilted his head as he thought, his whiskers twitching slightly. "They fly at the first sight of danger, so you've probably gotta stay downwind, right? Extra quiet." He realized then the volume that he was speaking, which was always just under a yell for no apparent reason, and his eyes widened. The next words came out little more than a whisper. "You probably gotta make the kill fast too, so you don't get half carried away?"
She appeared pleased by his answers. "That's right, but you also have to be very stealthy. A flock like this has a lot of eyes in it and a few of them are going to be watching for danger."
Ahead of them, past the bushes and brambles, the flock mingled and pecked at the ground. Though the heads bobbed in a continuous sequence, there was always at least one peeking up and checking around, unaware of the predators for now. "If you want to give it a go," his mentor murmured, "you're going to want to watch where your paws are so you don't step on anything. Keep your weight distributed. Mind the wind. And keep your eye on the prize."
Did she have faith in Servalpaw? No, not at all. Was she going to let him know that? Not even Dancingdragon was that cruel.
