Ever since the fire Angelicpaw and Nightmarepaw had been lost in the flames, assumed dead. But after a few weeks Angelicpaw returned to the makeshift camp in SunClan when DayClan wasn't watching her closely. The medicine cats had done the best they could for her, but she walked with a limp, her sight was gone in one eye, and the looks that once made her so striking were burnt up leaving half her body charred and the other half gorgeous.
Angelicpaw managed to hobble all the way back to her clan mates after taking a wrong turn to SunClan's original camp. She was exhausted by the time she arrived. Duskslayer had informed Bloodystar that her daughter had returned so instead she sat up, her chin held high awaiting her father to greet her. He had been the only reason why she had returned, the rest of DayClan outright refused to let her leave in fear of what he might do to her. But she knew the real side of her father, knowing he would not be quick to deem her a traitor when she was forced against her will to stay and heal.
When she saw Bloodystar's orange fur moved into her vision she smiled with a childish excitement, "Father!" She chirped, but coughed slightly, the smoke from the fires still had a lasting impact on her.
Bloodystar, like his adopted daughter and much of SunClan, had burns. One of his front paws was raw and infected and half of his face bore some minor singe marks as well. Of course, nothing compared to the ravaged body of Angelicpaw, who he didn't even recognize at first. Her beauty was ruined well beyond repair... and the fur that wasn't burn or blistered reeked of DayClan and Autumngossamer.
"How dare you return to me like this," He growled, lifting his paw as if to smack her but he something stopped him and instead slammed in back on the ground, "Not only are you crippled, but you have been fraternizing with the enemy, accepting their healing, their prey. All the while your clanmates suffered without half of the necessities you have indulged."
Bloodystar looked her right in the eyes, noticing that one was blind, and lashed his tail. He just felt so... empty. No love, but he had plenty of hate, hate that had nothing to do with Angelicpaw but was easily redirected, "You can't hunt. You can't fight. I can't even trust you. You're useless."
Angelicpaw hunched over, never believing that her father would strike his raised paw at her, but cowered at his rage. The thud of his paw sounded like thunder in her ears, his eyes full of wrath sent fear searing into her heart. It wasn't enough that his look alone was killing her inside to see the one person who loved her turn his hatred on her, he tore her down piece by piece.
crippled.
Her tail wrapped around her leg tight, wanting it to disappear from sight.
accepting their healing.
Her paw rubbed over her blinded eye, her heart in her throat.
prey.
Her head hung in a low bow to her father, ashamed of every luxury she had, every shortcoming she had. The more he spoke the deeper she bowed until her forehead rested only an inch from the ground. She would do anything to make him smile at her again. Say anything to make him love her again. Any self respect she had before this moment Bloodystar had made sure to twist that positivity into a senseless amount of guilt.
"Please father, punish me, but do not dismiss me," Angelicpaw begged, her tail between her legs. There would be no greater shame than to be labelled a traitor. Her mind was frantic to hold onto any semblance of power she had before her burning. Her biological mother's words stuck out in her head, "I'm an elemental. I know Flamingstar said that's bad, but I can use it for good. It's my blood, it can heal. Please, let me heal you, it's the least I can do to be useful."
Elementals. He loved and feared them, but more than anything he wanted them under his control, a whole army of them if he could. It was literally fighting fire with fire but it's not like the other side gave him any choice. As he looked at Angelicpaw now he seemed thoughtful not hateful. Without warning, Bloodystar gently cupped the side of Angelicpaw's face that was not burned. It was the gentle caress, a drastic shift in tone from the rage he'd fueled into the same paw only minutes ago, "Angelicpaw... that changes everything."
His voice was very soft but the tenderness did not reach his eyes. He pulled away from her and presented the apprentice with his wounded paw, all illusions dropped except for his own pain nullification. Bloodystar had been treating it and had it well dressed and wrapped but, because he was nulling his own pain, he had no idea just how bad the wound had become. He removed the cobwesb to reveal and angry red lunch of flush, burning bright red now from the flames that caused it but from infection. Bloodystar had done his best to ignore the wound but he was beginning to feel weak when putting pressure on that paw.
"If you can heal this wound, I will allow you to serve at my side once more as one of the Sun God's chosen."
Angelicpaw shuttered at Bloodystar's warm touch against her cold face. Her star struck blue eyes stared at him like he were a merciful god. She lifted herself up from her hopeless position nodding her head eagerly, "It would be an honor, thank-you father," She said tearing up. Like most SunClan cats she never knew a love that was free that she trusted. Her fathers love had to be earned, as was anyone's love in SunClan, it made sense though. You had to worthy of it, if you weren't, you didn't get any affection, anything free would have been outright suspicious. Because of this she had turned DayClan's love away, no matter how true it may have seemed. Every part of her life told her the treatment she was given in SunClan maybe harder, but was the right path.
Using her claws on her burned paw she slit open her other paw. She had never intentionally healed anyone before, but she knew it healed better based on the amount she gave him. Moving closer to her father she allowed her wound to bleed into the cut. Wounds seemed better to dress the blood on top where as poisons it was better to be fed the blood. But due to her father allowing the wound to take a turn for the worse she cut herself open more, bleeding until his paw looked as good as the others. The pain of her claws cutting her skin hurt, but nothing like the humiliation would have if she failed this task.
"There, all better," Angelicpaw said proudly. She luckily didn't feel too loopy from it, after all she was kept in good health thanks to DayClan.
Bloodystar watched in amazement as the blood moved practically on its own, twisting and turning and digging itself into his wound. All he felt was pressure and a tugging sensation but all other sensation he blocked until his paw looks just the same as the rest. Then and only then did he let himself fully his extremity, going so far as to test pressing his full weight on it, but nothing, it was as good as new.
"Angelicpaw, you're amazing," He said, eyes sining bright with pride and something else. Up until now he had only thought of using elementals as a tool of war, but he was finally beginning to realize that they could do so much more than that. Aneglicpaw was invaluable. Judging by how quickly her blood had worked on his two week old wound, he was fairly confident that she would be able to heal ever graver wounds. But there was a catch. He noticed that even though Angelicpaw's cut was covered in her own blood, the wound did not heal. It seemed the element did not go both ways.
"As soon as we are back on SunClan territory, I will welcome you as our newest and youngest senator," It was a rank meant for retired cats, but given Angelicpaw's wounds and abilities, it would be best to keep her far away from the battle field like the rest of his Warriors, "You will serve directly beneath me, in fact, due to your delicate condition I will have you keep your nest near mine in the High Priest's chambers. However... I am still not sure if I can trust you. So I will give you a task to prove your loyalty. As senator, you will be in charge of finding Nightmarepaw and bringing her back to me. Until she is back home, I will have Perfectpaw serve as your personal guard, and he will report to me directly if you act out of line."
Angelicpaw could feel herself standing taller the more her father spoke. Her as senator? The youngest senator in SunClan's history!? Her eyes were basically like starlight now, glowing with pride. She would have never wanted that kind of title a few weeks ago, but given her current condition that was as much as an honor she could be given. Not only that, but Bloodystar loved her, was proud of her even after she betrayed him by letting DayClan pamper her. Even after admitting what she was he loved her for her element, not like her real mother.
There was never a background thought or whisper in her mind warning her that this wasn't right. That he was caging her in by making her sleep closer to him. That she wasn't allowed to leave anywhere without a guard. That despite Bloodystar telling her she had to prove herself only by healing him he had already decided that wasn't enough and when would it be enough? All she felt was pride and honor that he had accepted her, no other detail mattered.
"Of course father, I would want to be corrected immediately if I was out of line. I humbly accept your gracious offer, I am at your command," Angelicpaw promised him with a dip of her head, but there was one question on her mind, "Um... But how will I find Nightmarepaw if I must remain stationed nearby at all times?"
"I did not say that you had to stay nearby at all times, did I?" Bloodystar corrected, looking past Angelicpaw and toward the setting sun. The view from MoonClan was terrible but not even Selene could hide the beautiful pink-and-purple dyes the colored the sky. The body paint the all SunClan cats wore was nothing but a poor mimic of the real deal. After his pause he leveled his gaze back to Angelicpaw, now looking somewhat wistful, "You may travel wherever you see fit so long as the Sun God watches your back. However, when the Moon Goddess takes over the skies, you must return to my side. Perfectpaw will be sure to remind you of your curfew. Do not miss it."
Bloodystar got to his paws and touched his nose to Angelicpaw's. She would have felt a sensation akin to being shocked by static followed immediately by... nothing. No itches, no pain. Her burns quit aching entirely. She probably felt just the same as she did before the fire, although her eye remained sightless. He could have given her vision but it wasn't something he could keep up remotely so he left it off entirely, "The Sun God has blessed me with the ability to take away your pain and your scars, but such relief is temporary. Shortly after sunset the glamour will fade and you will appear to anyone who sees you as you really are. I have made an exception tonight. You may visit your clanmates for one hour past sunset should you wish... just be sure to return to me before the time limit is up."
Now he embraced her, purring deeply, it was real, genuine emotion. Not long ago Bloodystar had viewed her as disposable but now she was his treasure, "I'm so glad that you are home."
Angelicpaw nodded along with Bloodystar, it would be good to see her siblings again. They didn't talk often, but it was always nice to have competent people who were at her status to talk to.
She closed her eyes as they touched noses, but a static shock opened them wide causing her tail to stand up straight. Her mouth gaped open, her father was blessed with power sent straight from the Sun God. She truly was lucky that he took pity on her, bringing her into his home, raising her with his values. "You're my home father, I'll come back home," Angelicpaw purred rubbing up against Bloodystar. "I'll be a good listener to Perfectpaw. I bet when him and Tranquilpaw see me they'll chew me out for being gone."
Bloodystar's rumbling purrs stopped entirely at the mention of Tranquilpaw. Angelicpaw couldn't have known about her adoptive sister's death, but he found himself angry for her having brought it up. Tranquilpaw was a daughter to him. Her death was his failure. Still, he had enough of a heart not the blame Angelicpaw for it, and, through the Sun God, he was able to find strength to let that anger go... mostly.
The ginger furred tom pulled away from her and rested the side of his face against her unburnt side, letting out a quiet sigh when he did so, "I'm sorry, Angelicpaw. Tranquilpaw has gone to the Isle. The same flames that robbed your beauty took her life... With you home, though, that will never have to happen to any of our family ever again."
It was a very silent accusation - If you had been here, your blood could have saved her - but is was calculated, another ball on her chain.
