Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Life sucked for Soot. Well, the former SunClan apprentice still thought of herself as Raypaw, but her inability to speak for the time being made that a moot point. She still smelled of smoke, soot, and SunClan, and her throat still stung with every breath she took. Her skin and fur had blackened patches where she burned herself on embers. Those spots were neglected care beyond the essential, so those plentiful blackened spots were particularly painful, but not as painful as her humiliation.
She was a follower of the Sun God surviving in a cave where the sun never shines, and forced to serve the Clan of her conquerors. Now she carried filthy moss from the elder's den to the drop off point near the camp's exit. How she wished to leave the place and see her deity in all his glory! She closed her eyes and bowed her head. Her voice was barely a whisper as she spoke, and even then had to consciously fight against the pain and oncoming coughing fit. "Oh Sun, Great Protector of SunClan, as you rise, you bestow light upon your Chosen, bringing life and strength to the Clan and the cats within. Shine upon us today as we carry out your will---"
(Feel free to interrupt her prayer however you want!)
"What are those things on fur your?" Gravekit came up behind Soot, staring at the burns on the she-cat's skin. He'd never seen a cat with markings like that before. Had she been born with them? Did they hurt? He wanted to know, with no thought or consideration towards the she-cat's own feelings. "And what's that thing you're whispering?"
His voice broke her concentration, and she spiraled into another coughing fit. Each cough was drier and more painful than the last. It just hurt, and she wanted to slap this kit for it, but she an opportunity here. As her coughs rolled to a stop she turned around to face the Gravekit. She mouthed 'burns' to him and pointed her tail at one of the spots. Now for the opportunity the Sun God just so graciously sent yo her. She knelled down as whispered the first sentence into his ear.
Oh Sun, Great Protector of SunClan, as you rise, you bestow light upon your Chosen...
She nosed him as she said 'your Chosen.' If she could get this kit to believe in the Sun God, then she had hope.
"Hey Soot! Finish cleaning up elder dirt already?" Viridianpaw's brash voice heralded the apprentice as he came down the path from the day patrol. Frozenfire had started to task cats with patrolling during the day to protect NightClan from the other clans who were alert while NightClan slept.
"Now Soot, you should know better. Trying to hang around kits, can't have you go and cough all over them." Viridianpaw said as he came over. He looked at Gravekit. "Careful, get too close to her and you'll catch the Sun sickness." He said in a serious tone of voice, but his eyes gleamed with dark mirth.
"Sun sickness?" Gravekit echoed, his eyes still focused on the scars marking Soot's body. "Is that what gave her the burns? Or what she was..." He stopped himself before he said any more. He wanted to ask Viridianpaw more about the prayer Soot had whispered into his ear, but something about the glint in Viridianpaw's eyes told him that the other tom might not give him totally accurate information. "...Is it contagious?" he settled upon instead.
Viridianpaw nodded gravely. "See, Sun Sickness is what effects cats from SunClan. They blindly believe in a cat they called the Sun God, who was actually an evil entity." He said lifting his paws miming a boogie man.
"Mother told me that it took SunClan's old leader with the powers of the moon to slay him, to bring an end to his evil. But instead it became a terrible sickness. It infected the whole clan, causing madness. Starting with the cat who overthrew the old leader. He's an insane evil cat, even his name, Bloody is a promise to the destruction he intends to bring to everyone inlcuding his own cats."
"That's how she got those wounds and what she's muttering, it's the scars of the sun sickness," Viridianpaw shook his head. "And if you listen to her mutterings you might catch it too."
The silver bengal had never met this apprentice before, and she already didn't like him. Sun sickness, huh? She rolled her eyes. She rested her tail over the young kitten's shoulder and just smiled at Viridianpaw. And then spat in his face. She was starting to make a habit out of this.
She laughed a little bit and gestured towards the medicine den with a jerk of her head. Whatever this 'sun sickness' was, he certainly had it all over him now. And he wouldn't want to infect everyone else in the camp.
Viridianpaw recoiled back, disgusted. "You disgusting cur! What is wrong with you?" He wiped at his fur absolutely disgusted. He growled when she laughed, and then a dark look crossed his eyes. "Think you're so smart, spewing your gross fluids at me, huh? Ahava!" He shouted. "Ahava, the prisoner is spewing fluids I think she should be quarantined in the caves again!" He yowled for the medicine cat.
He glared at Soot. "You're just proving how diseased you are." He sneered at her. "When Ahava gets here I'll make sure she puts you in the dark caves. Maybe that'll clear up your stupid 'sun sickness'."
Gravekit couldn't help but snicker when Soot spat in Viridianpaw's face. Sure, Viridianpaw was his Clanmate so he probably should've been on his side, but...Soot had just been minding her own business, hadn't she? Viridianpaw was the one who had started it.
The smile dropped off his face when he heard Viridianpaw call for Ahava, however. "No, don't do that!" he hissed, standing in front of Soot and trying to be as threatening as a kit his size could be. "Everything was fine until you came along and started bugging her! If she goes to the caves then I'm going too!"
Viridianpaw sneered, wiping his muzzle and smearing it across the kits face. "There, you've already started." He said with a laugh. "If you want to be so close to the Sun sick cat, you can share in her sickness." He said.
He shoved the kit aside, grabbed some dirt and dust in one of his paws and lifted it up and smacked it right in Soot's face. "There, some dirt in your eye." He spat before he shoved past her to go get cleaned up. Spitting at her as well as he passed for good measure. "Take note Gravekit, you side with Sun sick cats you get treated like 'em."
The prisoner is spewing fluids! That only made her laugh even harder. She wasn't exactly spewing fluids everywhere. She gave the kitten a pat on the back. She didn't really care about the dark caves. All these caves were dark. A little darker didn't bother her. Her laugh stopped and was replaced by a growl as he shoved the kit.
Her eyes blazed with anger as he walked by. The dirt in her face didn't make her particularly angry, nor did the spit. But hurting a kit, that got her mad. She waited for Viridianpaw to completely pace before whipping around and spitting right into his ear.
Gravekit growled as Viridianpaw walked past, but his anger quickly turned to delight when Soot spit in the apprentice's ear, making the feeling of grime staining his muzzle fade away. It would almost be fun, if it hadn't started out so mean-spirited. "Nice aim, Soot!" he said, and before really thinking about it, he grabbed a bit of damp moss that was meant for the elders and threw it in the direction of Viridianpaw's head. Perhaps he was digging his own grave by siding with Soot, either by risking catching a disease or his Clanmates steering clear of him--but once Gravekit's curiosity was piqued, he just couldn't let go.
[ i like how they're just having a spit war now xD FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT ]
Viridianpaw whipped around and now absolutely furious that she hadn't cowed leapt onto her snarling. "You little wench! I see you really need to clean up your act!" He dug into her back taking pleasure in drawing blood in areas already healing.
He sneered and then lowered his head to grab her scruff. With a sharp yank he dragged her off her paws, and began marching over to the cenote dragging her with him. He'd dump her into the cenote and hold her under. Teach her a lesson and remind her of her place.
He paid Gravekit no mind, let the stupid kit do whatever it wanted. Viridianpaw knew he could beat a kit and the miserable wretch of a prisoner.
Soot knew this would spur more retaliation, but she didn't think it would be much worse than what she had already experienced. But, of course, she was wrong. Her tender but healing burns were torn apart, and she screamed loud enough for an echo to be heard in the cave. Her body immediately went limp from the pain.
She was hardly conscious when she felt the apprentice grab her scruff. Her feet dragged on the earth beneath her as the tom pulled her closer and closer to the cenote. Her mind panicked, but her body couldn't do a thing. At this point she was just hoping Viridianpaw didn't drown her.
Gravekit flinched away and covered his ears as Soot's scream echoed around the cave, lasting far longer than it should have. Any of the fun he'd felt before had vanished now, disappearing as soon as he'd heard her cry. There could be no mistaking any of this as playful anymore. And its your fault, he thought.
He growled, clumsily launching himself at Viridianpaw. "Get off her!" he snarled, and with as much strength as he could muster, bit at Viridianpaw's tail.
Viridianpaw yowled dropping Soot to the ground, he spun and kicked out at Gravekit to make him let go of his tail.
Finally, finally the screaming and shouting and scuffling drew the notice of someone as Duskwing came out of the elder's den.
"What's going on here?!" Duskwing roared, "Some cats are trying to sleep! What are you-"
She trailed off when she saw Soot on the ground bleeding, Gravekit near Viridianpaw and Viridianpaw looking furious.
Though when Viridianpaw saw the furious elders his ears lowered a little, and he crouched a little in light of Duskwing's furious gaze. Then indignation returned to him and he straightened up.
"I caught the prisoner trying to feed lies to Gravekit! And she spit on me!" He declared.
"So what?! You attacked her? That's my servant you mousebrain! You've reopened her wounds you mousedung!" Duskwing hissed shoving past him to check Soot, wincing at the blood.
Turning to Gravekit, "Gravekit, go to the medicine cat den, go get some cobwebs, as well as a poppy seed."
Then to Viridianpaw Duskwing fixed him with a hard look. "As for you you will go and fetch Flamingstar. She'll decide your punishment, and figure out what we're going to do while you've made Soot unable to work."
"But-!"
"Go!" Duskwing roared, tail lashing and ears pinning back.
Viridianpaw cowed and hastily scampered off to go to Flamingstar's den.
Duskwing turned to Soot. "Easy." She told her, "Gravekit, be quick. You do know what cobwebs look like right?" The elder asked, as she went over to Soot's side, siting down so she could balance a little easier, bending down to inspect the cats wounds.
Soot wheezed when she hit the rocky floor of the cave. She had begun to heal, but was in no position to be thrown around as if she were prey. Her body had not recovered to that point yet. Her burn wounds were still black and her throat still raw. She didn't notice Duskwing until her master was right next to her, and she couldn't help but draw back at Duskwing's light touch. . Soot did not understand what she was so angry about. Whatever work she would have done could easily be replaced with that apprentice. In the end, she wasn't a life that Duskwing should care for. She, a cat, was gift from Frozenfire to her. And now Flamingstar was coming, one the leaders who orchestrated the attack on her homeland. That could only go so well.
For a few moments, all Gravekit could do was lay there in shock at how quickly the situation had escalated. "But I don't want..." he muttered, gaze locked on Soot. Didn't want to do what? Help her? Leave her alone with Duskwing?
He didn't finish the thought; instead he sprinted to the medicine den, returning with cobwebs and a poppyseed like Duskwing had said. "Is she gonna be okay?" he asked, eyes fixed on the she-cat once more.
Duskwing grimaced. "Well the mousebrain made her wounds worse, the best I can do is quickly patch her up and then have Ahava look her over. But we need to stop the bleeding and ease at least some of her pain." Duskwing said.
She took the cobwebs and began placing them on Soot carefully. "Gravekit hold onto the poppy seed, I don't want to give it to her until I'm certain she's stable." Duskwing meowed. "Better yet try to engage her while I patch her up."
The elder had to rise onto her three legs, despite being forced into an early retirement Duskwing still moved around fairly well despite her missing leg.
