Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The fire had just gone out in the SunClan camp. The inferno simply had nothing left to burn, and by some horrible miracle Raypaw survived. Poisoned a few days before and sick in the medicine den, she did not wake until the blaze was fully developed and working its way inside. She pulled herself into the herb storage and pushed all the leaves out. The soot from the smoke stained she-cat's black and white fur grey, but it was not gone. But she still felt the worse of the heat of the blaze, and worse, the smoke. Her pads were seared, her eyes were glazed over from the smoke, and her throat and lungs were raw. Breathing hurt. Everything hurt. But she couldn't stay. No one was coming for her. Everyone thought she was dead.
She painstakingly pulled herself from the medicine den before collapsing again, landing in a pile of embers. She screeched as they burned off some of her flesh and fur. She rolled over to the other side as she heaved for breath, which only made her throat burn as she inhaled some more soot. Then she did it again. Moving a little bit. Falling. Burning. Breathing in more smoke. She repeated this painful process from dawn to dusk. Now her fur had random bare patches from the embers. She had inadvertently wandered into NightClan territory as she traveled. If the smoke did not clog her eyes and tear apart her nose, she would have avoided it. But nothing worked. As she neared, Raypaw heard the sound of running water. Another push forward. More pain. And then water. She lapped at the stream for what seemed like hours, and didn't notice when another cat approached.
What a sight it was. She smelled of burning flesh and smoke. Her fur was burned off in a random patchwork. The exposed skin in those patches was as raw as her throat. Her breathing was hoarse and pained at best. She had no whites in her eyes left. Only red.
As Captain of the Loyal Guard, and Flamingstar's most loyal of friends, Frozenfire had been tasked with watching the border of NightClan, an as she'd had the loyal guard spread out to keep the border secure. She'd noticed a raggedy little shape moving through the forest.
Frozenfire's lips pulled back exposing her teeth in a wicked grin, she advanced towards the burned up cat. The cat stank of smoke and burnt flesh, and since the only source of fire was SunClan and this cat hadn't been brought accompanied by a NightClan cat. It likely wasn't one of their own.
"Well what have we here." Frozenfire said, voice dropped low as she let out a menacing chuckle. The icy white she cat straightened up, tilting her head as she fixed the burned cat with a wicked grin. "Seems like a bit of soot wound up within NightClan's borders. Well, best make sure it's well and truly put out."
With just a shift of her tail and back legs she effectively did the equivalent of hip checking the apprentice into the stream.
"There we go, that should douse any sparks an ember might kick up." Frozenfire said chuckling to herself as she waited for the apprentice to surface.
At first the chilled water hurt her aching throat, but as she drank more the pain slowly numbed away. The sound of the rushing water also soothed her screaming senses enough to make her think that she imagined the voice even as it stood over her. She thought that voice was an illusion. Maybe she was dying. Maybe her mind was trying to escape its vessel. Maybe it was her mother...
It most certainly was not. The apprentice gasped when Frostfire checked her into the river. All over her burns seemed to reignite as she tumbled around underwater, whilst the current carried her further downstream. She never learned how to swim in SunClan. Deserts didn't really play into that. She just thrashed about the best she could as her burnt lungs screamed for more oxygen. Eventually her claws hooked into something solid on the banks, and she pulled herself out of the water. Raypaw couldn't help but notice a gray patch of soot disperse in the stream as she collapsed into the bank. Each deep breath sounded like nails on a chalkboard as she gasped for breath. Her muscles were jelly. She was at Frozenfire's mercy.
The silver bengal's pleading hazel eyes looked up to the warrior as she approached again. She opened her mouth to say something, but the only sound she could make was a bunch of violent coughs. Each one reignited the sores in her throat, with the last one even drawing some blood. She clutched her chest with a paw as the pain spread to her lungs. They felt like they might collapse from the violent hacking.
Frozenfire padded back over to the burned apprentice, blue eyes gleaming. "There, no smoldering embers left on you?" She placed a paw under the cat's chin to look her over for a moment. Tsking softly as she listened to the sound of her coughing.
"Hmm, that doesn't sound good now does it?" She tutted releasing the younger cat's chin. "I could leave you here, but your body might attract foxes." She mused. "But to waste the supplies on healing you? That'd be pointless. I was supposed to find some prey, or some prisoners, not a little bit of troublesome soot."
"Perhaps though, you can make yourself useful. Yes," Frozenfire said nodding. "We can fix you up a little. The throat might be an issue, maybe the lungs but as long as those little legs and teeth work. You can be useful."
"Now little ball of soot, don't go and be troublesome. I'm quite fine dipping you back in the water again to clean you off some more." She said moving over to grasp 'Soot' by her scruff and pull the wet bundle of fur from the water.
She wanted to be left for the foxes. She really did. Survival at this point was hell, and it could only be worse if this cruel she-cat decided to take her in. Raypaw had a sharp retort ready to go, "Ye--". Damn it. She broke into another coughing fit. It broke her. Of her siblings, she was known to have a razor-sharp tongue, and now it was useless. Every quick quip she could think of would end in her coughing up a lung. She couldn't do anything.
Only the silver bengal's eyes could communicate the disdain she had for the situation. If only she hadn't eaten that mouse, she would never have been poisoned and never gotten trapped in the blaze. If only her siblings hadn't forgotten about her. A tear rolled down her cheek as Frozenfire finished looking her over, and another fell as she talked about fixing her up. She had never been described as useful. It was just degrading to have her worth boiled down to that word, and then be picked up by the scruff like a helpless kitten.
Frozenfire carried the cat she had mentally determined to be called 'Soot', she held her like a caught rabbit paying no mind if her limbs bumped against anything as she walked.
Quickening her pace as she neared NightClan camp, pausing for a moment to set Soot down and roll her neck.
"Ugh, you're so heavy. You're going to have to work extra hard to earn your keep Soot." She meowed. "I'll take you and have Ahava or maybe even Bleakwind, that starry eyed dingus should know a thing or two about healing."
She took another moment to rest her aching muscles before she picked up Soot once more and made her way down the winding path into the cenote below. The water reflecting the moonlight shining down on the pool from above.
Frozenfire hopped into the cave still carrying Soot in her jaws. There weren't many cats around as most were out watching the borders or with Flamingstar. But she did see Duskwing poke her head out of the elders den and eye her as she made her way into camp.
She let herself drift in and out of consciousness as they Loyal Guard carried her back to their camp. Everything was out of her control at this point, and she needed what little rest she could get, but bouncing around and hitting every little root and bump on the way didn't help her get anything meaningful. In her memory the way from the border river to the camp's entrance was a scrambled mess with random missing pieces. Raypaw had no idea where she was.
When Frozenfire slowed to stop, Raypaw expected to be dropped like a piece of prey, but she set her down. Odd, but welcomed. What came next was far from it. You're going to have to work extra hard to earn your keep Soot. What!? Her name was Raypaw. Not Soot. Her heart raced. Her mother named her after her father. She couldn't just let that be taken away! She tried to raise her voice, but again only fell into a coughing fit.
Despite her terrible situation, she couldn't help but admire the natural beauty of the camp's entrance. It rivaled SunClan's ravine, but certainly did not beat it. As she went further into the cave and entered NightClan's empty camp, a new reality dawned on her: she would never see her god again. The cave was devoid of sunlight. She took another shuddering breath. Her faith could pull her through. It had to.
Frozenfire set down the scrap of fur. "Don't try wandering off Soot. If I accidentally knock you into the pool in the cenote. It'd be a bit longer of a fall than your dip into the stream!" She said lightly before she went off to the medicine cat den to see if Ahava was in.
Duskwing, emerged from the elders den. The she cat still looked lively, having been forced to retire from the loss of her hind leg rather than due to old age. She eyed the cat. "What in StarClan's name has Frozenfire brought now?" She muttered looking the sooty cat up and down.
"Oh just a new prisoner," Frozenfire meowed as she emerged from the medicine cat den. Having just asked Ahava what to use to sooth the young cats burns and asking her to check the cat over later. "Duskwing, meet Soot. I imagine she'll be your new slave to free up the apprentices. Their time is better spent becoming stronger warriors than slaving away cleaning."
Duskwing bristled, glaring at Frozenfire, before looking at Soot. She scoffed. "Whatever, just make sure you clean her up. I don't need her stinking up the elders den more than your son does." She grumbled.
Frozenfire's eyes narrowed tensing up at the jab at her son, but she instead let out a laugh. "Oh don't worry, I'll scrub her after I make sure her fur won't fall off. You know how it is with burns." She said. "Come along soot, or do your paws not work?" She asked sharply giving the apprentice a kick in the flank as she bent down to pick up the supplies to treat her.
Duskwing was still bristling from Frozenfire's comments, and her eyes narrowed when Frozenfire kicked the cat. But she didn't comment.
She rolled over onto her flank as soon as Frozenfire put her down. The cave floor cooled her burns a little bit, and she was a little tempted to jump in the cenote. Best case scenario, he burns felt a lot better. Worst scenario, she would die and never have to do what Frozenfire wanted.
She closed her eyes. It had to be around morning right now, and that called for certain duties. She mouthed the words of the prayer she took to heart as a kit: Oh Sun, Great Protector of SunClan, as you rise, you bestow light upon your Chosen, bringing life and strength to the Clan and the cats within. Shine upon us today as we carry out your will and continue to guide our steps, that we may never lose sight of you.
She opened them to see her capturer emerging from what she thought to be the medicine den, and she then saw the three-legged elder. She looked young, way too young to have such a debilitating injury. She would have felt bad for Duskwing if she herself wasn't introduced as the new prisoner/slave of shadewalkers.
The silver bengal's striking hazel eyes saw Frozenfire tense up, and she thought for a moment that Duskwing was gonna get tossed into the cenote. Her apparent restraint seemed out of place... maybe Frozenfire just cut her some slack because she missing a leg? Maybe there was more there than met the eye.
She crumpled at Frozenfire's kick, and again went into a coughing fit. As the fit died down she slowly pushed herself to her paws, and her bloodshot eyes were blazing. She couldn't fight Frozenfire, but she could surely make her mad. When Frozenfire turned around again, Raypaw spat in her face.
Frozenfire snarled wiping off the spit. She took a moment taking a few deep breaths. "That, was very bad." She said coldly. "For that, I think you can go without medicine." She said shoving away the herbs. "I was going to be nice but apparently you sun loving fools need to have sense beaten into you." She moved forward and snatched her by the scruff again, giving her a shake.
"I'm thinking a good bit of time in the dark should make it clear where you stand." Frozenfire growled as she yanked hard, harder than was necessary on Soot's scruff.
"Hey!" Duskwing said, Frozenfire pausing. "If you leave her on her own without treating her she may likely die, and that just means we've traded a prisoner for a corpse. I think putting her in time out in the deepest cave is a fitting punishment after you treat her wounds." Duskwing said sharply. "We can't afford to waste resources with leafbare coming."
Frozenfire paused, narrowing her eyes at Duskwing then with a scoff she tossed Soot back down onto the ground. "Fine, you fix her up, and since you can't drag her down. You have till I come back to get her fixed up enough to face her punishment."
Raypaw glared at Frozenfire as she wiped the spit off her face and took a few deep breaths. She knew what was coming. Her eyes darted to the herbs as they were pushed away. Great. She could see her friends on the Isle sooner and not have to deal with Frozenfire. She closed her eyes as the larger she-cat grabbed her scruff.
Each shake hurt and made her scratch her lungs, but it could have been worse. At least Frozenfire didn't beat her with her claws. She tensed at the mention of staying in the dark. She had to see her God!
She opened her eyes at the sound of Duskwing's voice. Was this elder really going to step in? It looked like the elder wanted nothing to do with her. Raypaw didn't have much time to think about it before she was dropped to the ground, which set off another coughing fit. Selene be damned. She couldn't handle this for much longer.
She recovered when Frozenfire was fully out of view, and then she looked up to her new 'master.' She tilted her head to the side to question her. Why did she do that?
Duskwing sighed tail lashing. "Tsk, thinks that just because she and Flamingstar are close she can do whatever she likes." She muttered shaking her head. She turned her attention to the sooty little cat before her. Who was now looking at her with a bewildered look.
She huffed. "Oh don't give me that look, I'm not so heartless I'll let a burned cat go untreated." She said sharply going over to the herbs that Frozenfire had knocked around. She plucked up a poppy seed, hesitating a moment. "No that might make you sleep, and I need you alert so I can help you."
Duskwing wasn't completely certain of what she was doing if she was being. But at least whatever Frozenfire had brought was pretty self explanatory. Apply this ointment that was on this leaf to the burns.
Then she covered the burns with a leaf and secured it loosely with spiderwebs.
From what she saw of Frozenfire, she expected this she-cat to be cruel enough to leave her be. She had brought nothing to the clan, and Duskwing didn't seemed so thrilled about her being here. Raypaw kept her hardened gaze on the three-legged cat as she walked over to the herbs. Now what was she going to do, toss them in the cenote?
Raypaw stiffened as Duskwing lathered the ointment over her burns. She didn't trust her yet, and the ointment just felt weird. Not bad, but weird. She didn't really understand why spiderwebs had to go on next. The stuff felt viscous enough without them.
Her eyes met Duskwing's, and Soot nodded her thanks. Maybe she could get through this until the Sun God sent someone for her. Duskwing didn't seem too bad.
She opened her mouth to speak, and again broke down into a coughing fit. Her throat burned from the smoke, her muscles ached beyond belief, and her skin was seared from all the burns. Everything hurt, but she had no way of telling her this. She could only trust that Duskwing would figure it out from the rough sounds coming from her throat.
