Shhh... just close your eyes and sleep now. When you wake up everything will be different. I promise...
Bloodystar's last words to her echoed in Jetfire's mind, as her eyes closed and her mind faded to darkness. It was scary, realizing what was going on but being unable to do anything about it. She had taken her herb mixture like usual, but this time it only had taken moments to take affect her body becoming numb and unresponsive. But why? She had given him everything that he wanted. She had testified against Ghostcrown, and tried to be the cat he waned her to be. Tried to smile when he came into their den, tried to be there for him, tried to be happy... But nothing was ever enough for him.
Jetfire's eyes slowly opened, but the den she was in was completely foreign as the unknown scents filled her nose. Where had Bloodystar taken her now? Fear and confusion began to set in as she tried to lay still so as to no alert her captors. If this was his doing it couldn't be good and she needed more information. She didn't seem to be any more injured than she had been before, and she could feel the warmth of her kits against her stomach. Whatever she was laying upon was rather soft, the only familiar scents being herbs.... wait herbs? Her heart began to beat even faster, panic beginning to build within her. What was she not broken enough for him already? Cleaver
He hadn’t left her side since they returned to SwiftClan’s camp. His family would be unhappy, he knew; he had barely convinced them to tag along, and now he was ignoring them. There would be hell to pay soon, but he didn’t regret his choice. After fighting to free her for so long, Jetfire was here.
Ghostcrown thought he saw her move, just a twitch before she froze again. He recognized the sudden stiffness in her muscles: she wasn’t in a blissful slumber anymore, she was back in the land of the living.
“Good morning, Jetfire,” he greeted wearily. He didn’t sound as excited as he meant to, but his feelings were so complicated now. He took a breath to sort himself out and spoke carefully but with more energy. He had been crouched to the side of the makeshift den; now he stood up and slipped into her line of sight. “You’re free now, in SwiftClan. We rescued you.”

When her eyes landed upon Ghostcrown, her gaze softened a paw reaching out to gently cusp his chin "Ghostcrown..." she murmmered softly in disbelief. It didn't make a lot of sense as to how she had gotten here, but did it really matter? He was here, still alive and seemed find. She blinked trying to discern if this was reality or just another dream. She had been having a lot of those lately... Some good like this, and others nightmares that made her shudder
But he didn't fade away from her touch, in face his warmth felt so nice against her skin. It meant that this time it was real, a smile slowly seeping onto her face but then it faded just as quickly when she saw the way he looked at her. It wasn't the same as before, there was something else there that she couldn't place. He had rescued her... but why wasn't he happy? She had so much she wanted to say to him, so why couldn't voice a single one of them?
Was it because of what she had said in front of the clan? She had done that to save him from execution. It had killed her inside to say those thins, but it was the only thing within her power she could do to save him. "Forgive me" She slowly pulled her paw away from his chin, her eyes falling to the ground "I just wanted to save you" she added hardly in more than a whisper
He closed his eyes as she touched him. Time was slowing down again. For the last moon, he had thought about her every day; every night he laid awake, restless with the plans running through his mind, resisting the temptation to rush in blind and take down the leader himself. Rescuing Jetfire had become his only goal, and now that he had finally done it, there was nothing left to do but face reality again.
Ghostcrown had saved her as soon as had the chance, but opening his eyes now, he knew it had been too long. How much damage did Bloodystar cause while he was gone? How deep had he embedded her claws in her? He ripped out the leader's claws, he stole her away, but he couldn't erase the scars inevitably left behind. All he could hope was that any wounds he left wouldn't be as deep.
"I know, Jetfire," he sighed, looking away. "I knew what you were doing, even then. And I came back for you." It had taken so many nights of planning, and if it wasn't for the Fire Nation he would still be huddled in the medicine cat's den with Firetooth and Breezestep. But he did it, he played the hero just this once, and he saved her from the monster. "That doesn't mean I can forgive you."

Jetfire visibly shrank back, like she had been slapped across the face. Of course...After everything she had been through it couldn’t be that easy. She retreated inwards to escape the from the pain he had just inflicted on her already fragile state of mind to avoid shattering completely. Her eyes misted over, the hope she had been clinging to severed like an amputated limb. She had imagined the day she would escape over and over again, and never once had it hurt so much.
An uncomfortable silence settled between them. Unable to find any of the words she wanted to say, waves of depression consuming her thoughts. Even her savior couldn’t forgive her for what she had done. Then why? Why had he gone to such lengths to save someone whom he couldn’t forgive? He could have just walked away, leaving her to her fate but he hadn’t. But why?
She couldn’t even forgive herself, so why would he her? Jetfire’s gaze becoming more distant with every seconds that ticked by
Guilt weighed heavily on him. He hated to hurt her like this, so soon after she had escaped from someone much worse than him, but it felt like a lie to drag it on any longer. Ghostcrown had already lied to his kits to protect them, he had already kept his mouth shut and accepted his exile if it meant she stayed safe, and he was tired of it. It wasn't just the lies he was sick of, it was the looks of betrayal on everyone else's faces, it was the mistrust in their eyes when they looked at him and saw a murderer, and he couldn't help blaming her for that.
She had tried to save him, but she had turned him into a killer, and he could never walk away from that.
"Then why save me?"
Ghostcrown looked at her and failed to find an answer. Because he owed her? Because now his debt was paid? He kept that wasn't true; she had saved his life, he had saved hers, but it had never been about keeping score. He would never go to such extreme lengths just to make himself feel better about what had happened. If that had been the case, he would have just left her to Bloodystar, let him rip the life from her with each long day, and forgotten he ever owed her.
He couldn't blame some hero complex either; that was his brother. Even if he had wanted some of the glory of saving her, would he have given up so much just for a moment in the sun? Weren't there easier ways to leave his mark? Saving Jetfire had cost him so much, his family and his reputation, and he didn't feel like her savior right now. He just felt like a jerk.
"Because I care about you," he said simply. He lifted his gaze to meet hers if she would only look. Jetfire had betrayed him, struck a nerve he had never exposed to her, but that didn't erase his memories. "I can't forgive what you did to me, Jetfire, but that doesn't mean I hate you. That doesn't mean I wish you any harm. I want to be here for you, I want to be your friend, and I want you to be happy. Nothing has changed there."

The last shreds of hope she had fought so hard to hold to slipped away like water through her claws as the last of Ghostcrown's words reached her ears. She refused to meet his gaze, the all to familiar feelings of self loathing bubbling to the fore front of her mind. It seemed that everyone she cared for was fated to suffer while she stood on the sidelines watching... Her father, nearly killed before he eyes before being thrown into prison like a criminal. Her mother, stripped of her rank and broken, being complacent in her torment as Bloodystar paraded her around like some trophy. Her siblings, forced into loveless marriages arranged by Bloodystar. Her kits that she tried so hard to to keep out of his grasp, now plagued with health issues that were her fault. All the cats that had died while she stood at his side. Unwillingly or not she had still stood there. But this... they way Ghostcrown looked at her. His eyes which once held such kindness and love for her now only held resentment. The words coming from his lips not matching what she saw clearly in his gaze.
Every where she went she only caused more suffering and pain. Every time she tried to make things better, things only go worse. Every time she thought she had reached rock bottom, she sank deeper. Every time she thought she couldn't endure any more, she was proven wrong. The things Bloodystar had done to her had broken her spirit, wrecked her body, and driven her to suicide, and yet none of it had hurt her as deeply as this. To have someone that she cared for and placed her trust in to look at her like that way. Maybe this was just her fate, to cause pain and sufferring to everyone around her. Perhaps the best thing she could do for him now was to let him go, to disappear from his life so that she wouldn't cause him such grief any longer.
She didn't answer him, last time she had opened up and talked about how she was feeling had nearly gotten him killed. It made his family hate him, got him exiled from his clan. Her words were dangerous things, and she wouldn't do it to him again. It was little wonder her couldn't forgive her, and yet he had still came back. Putting his life on the line once again for her. He should have just let her die that day in the desert. How many cats would have been saved from all this suffering? Bloodystars words becoming all to real, a tear sliding down her cheek.
You are pathetic. Even in death you will never escape me. I'll go all the way to the Dark Forest to drag you back to my side, don't think I don't have the power to do it
He was right... She was pathetic, she would never be free of him. Even now when he didn't hold her captive any longer, he still had hold over her. Erasing any future she would be able to make for herself. Doomed to be forever locked in the spiral of self hatred and suffering he had created.
After all of his sacrifice, after all of his suffering, it wasn't supposed to end like this. He had pushed his own feelings aside for the last moon to focus on her because he knew it wasn't fair to be angry with her, she was suffering so much worse than he was and she had done what she could to save his life, so he did everything he could to get her out of there. He didn't want her gratitude, he didn't want an apology, he just wanted her to be happy, but instead, this somber silence stretched on between then and there was nothing he could do to bridge it.
You're being an idiot.
Those were Breezestep's words in his mind. She was right outside in the camp now, and he wished she was in here; she would know what to say. She could fix this. She would tell him to forget about himself and go comfort her now, lay by her side and tell her everything would be better now. Maybe that was the right thing to do, maybe if anyone else had saved her that's what they would have done, but Ghostcrown didn't have the strength to do that. Hadn't he always been selfish? He had fought himself this long, but his feelings were never going to change if he kept ignoring them.
"Jetfire, say something," he pleaded finally. "Please. I don't know how to fix this. I didn't want to hurt you."
"Wooow, Ghostcrown, I knew you were bad with the ladies, but I didn't realize you were this bad," Discordantmelody chimed in, had she not spoken up they probably would not have noticed her for awhile yet. In fact, she may have been standing in the entryway the whole time, there was really no telling, "If you don't want to talk about something, you do this clever tactic I call dodging the question."
She picked up the small bundle she had sat down to speak and placed it between the two of them. It was two plump mice and a white rose, basically a last minute date night. Discordantmelody was trying to help enable their romance but now she was starting to think they would have been better off had she never left. It's a lot easier being evil... There's no emotion more honest than anger, hatred and greed. This kind of crap is annoying.
"Anyways... I think we should take a break on talking about the hard stuff and instead have a bit to eat. I promise I didn't poison anything," She cased a sideways glance at Ghostcrown, he probably didn't know this but she had in fact poisoned Raypaw not all the long ago. He lived so it was water under the bridge as far as she was concerned. She pushed a mouse toward Jetfire and decided to keep the other one to herself, she didn't want to reward Ghostcrown for being an ass, "Are you comfortable, Jetfire? Firetooth will be here shortly, so if you have any aches and pains, nows the time to narrow them down to your top three because I don't think he likes to work very hard."

Please. I don't know how to fix this. I didn't want to hurt you.
There within lied the problem. She didn't know how to fix it either. She wasn't angry with Ghostcrown, not truly. He wasn't the one whom had abused and tormented her, and yet his words cut far deeper. Perhaps because with Bloodystar she expected it, him proving over and over again just how cruel he could be. But not from Ghostcrown... Not the cat who stopped her from killing herself... The tom she had watched play with her younger siblings with such kindness. The tom who had been such a doting father. The tom with whom she had spilled her deepest fears while crying on his shoulder. She opened her mouth to answer, but Discordantmelody emerged from the shadows.
What...Was.....She....Doing....Here.... Every time she turned around, Discordantmelody was there. She associated her with any bad memories, always having her by Bloodystar's side. She wanted to scream, snarl, swipe at her... something... anything... but she froze even as the mouse was placed before her. She hadn't had a real meal in so long, the sound of her stomach coming to life filling the den even though she didn't reach for it. Her fur began to bristle. Even if she had played some part in her escape she didn't trust her, not even for a moment. She had seen the way her loyalties flipped faster than the wind could change directions as she tried to figure out some way to get rid of her "Leave..." her eyes raising to look at the she-cat, trying to sound intimidating but her voice coming out more as a squeak
Ghostcrown jumped when he heard Discordantmelody's voice, and his ears flattened as he looked over at her. Bloodystar was her brother, and she had only changed her mind about him when he was clearly losing the siege. He didn't trust her even a bit... but he wasn't in a position to be making judgments either. They were in SwiftClan now, Jetfire was safe, and it wasn't his place to decide who to trust. Discordantmelody did help them in the end, so he said nothing as she entered.
And... yeah, she was right that he had butchered his meeting, but he couldn't help feeling a little offended by her comment. He had won over The Huntress, he wasn't that bad with ladies, it just happened that he had something serious to talk about now. He wasn't trying to seduce Jetfire, he was fighting to make things right between them again.
The exile couldn't help his sudden grin when Jetfire spoke. It disappeared as quickly as it came -- he knew he shouldn't be happy, Jetfire wouldn't want her gone without good reason. Discordantmelody must have treated her cruelly or the queen would have taken any excuse not to be alone with Ghostcrown again. But it was enough, for just a second they had been on the same page again, and Ghostcrown was blessed with a feeling of normalcy.
"Thanks for the prey, Discordantmelody. See you around." Ghostcrown's stomach was empty, but he didn't like the way she looked at him when she talked about poison, and he was suddenly glad that she hadn't brought him anything. He glanced sideways at Jetfire and offered her a tentative smile as he added, "she's right about my brother, he can be a bit prickly... but I think you'll like him. He's been wanting to meet you ever since I was exiled, and he's the only reason I could help rescue you at all."
Discordantmelody game Jetfire a bemused smile and cocked her head at the queen. She was such a classic calico, you really could never tell what she was thinking, she faced pretty much all life experiences with a look akin to someone about to crack a joke. Her mother was Foxstar and her father was Funk, after all. She'd been raised by the both of them so it shouldn't come as any surprise that she had a screw or two loose. Lately, however, she had changed somewhat. Discordantmelody was much more controlled and intention these days than she had been in her youth. Evidence being that she had bothered to come to SwiftClan in the first place.
She took a bite of her mouse while Ghostcrown rambled about things no one really cared about them turned her attention back to her sister-in-law / niece, "Let me make this clear: I was never on Bloodystar's side. In fact, I've never been on anybody's side. I do what suits me and am smart enough to get away with it," She pushed the mouse closer to Jetfire, "Now eat, you need it, you always looked like a bag of bones but these days you've really been embracing it. Can't be good for your little ones."
She then turned her indigo eyes to Ghostcrown, "Why don't you make yourself useful and go find your brother? Jetfire and I need some time for girl talk anyway."
Discordantmelody wasn’t wrong, now that her kits were out and having been starved she looked frail and sickly. Like the slightest puff of wind could send her flying. The combination of her traumatic kitting, nursing, and the siege had taken a toll on her body. She wasn’t producing a lot of milk at this point, and even her kits were beginning to thin. To keep the hinder pains away, she had been given clay to fill her stomach. It tasted gross, had few nutrients, but it did keep her from cramping. Still she shoved the mouse back at Discordantmelody with utter disdain “I’d rather go hungry” she laid her head back on her paws, a quiet protest. She wanted nothing to do with, nothing that reminded her of Bloodystar. Even if she was telling the truth, it did nothing to improve her standing with Jetfire, it just meant that Discordantmelody wanted something from her.
Jetfire felt one of the kits at her side stiffen, snapping her up as the first tremor began “Not again!” She nearly wailed, taking her paws and moving Secretkit onto his, and tilting his head upwards. She placed a firm paw over his body as it began to spasm violently trying to keep him from hurting himself or his siblings. Tears already forming at the corners of her eyes and she began to sob lowering her muzzle and licking the kit gently even as his claws tore into her face “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it’s all my fault” she whispered over and over again, as his seizure took hold
Ghostcrown opened his mouth to respond, but he was interrupted by Jetfire's sudden cry. His eyes stretched wide with horror as one of the kittens started to thrash about and he backed away, shaking his head.
"I'll go get Firetooth," he mewed immediately, and without waiting for an answer he spun around and dashed from the den. There was something terribly wrong with the kit, and he found himself praying silently that he wouldn't die, or it might kill Jetfire. How would she handle losing a kit now? They had come so far to rescue her, they couldn't let her family die now.
"Firetooth!" he yowled as he slid into the medicine cat's den, "come quickly, one of the kits is in trouble!"
The Swiftclan Medicine Cat was surprisingly alone for a cat who had just helped rescue a Queen and her sickly kits from a life of oppression, keeping to the far back of the small hollow he had made his temporary den while Freckledpaw was out fetching plants. Most of his herbs were resting in piles on fern, fig, and monstera leaves, ready to be picked up and moved at a moment's notice. Who knew how long Chimerastar planned on having the clan stay here, especially after he had messed with Sunclan again. The tom's nose wrinkled; he still reeked of ash and smoke. Saving Jetfire brought out a far different feeling than saving Autumngossamer did - one quiet and introspective, maybe because he wasn't the one playing the hero this time. Even watching from the outside this time, only solidified his understanding that this was his purpose, his life's calling...and maybe, maybe one that his brother could join him in.
"Come quickly, one of the kits is in trouble!"
Firetooth's head snapped towards the den entrance at the sound of Ghostcrown's call, his startled face quickly settling into a serious expression as he curtly nodded, and began gathering a variety of different herbs almost on instinct. "What are the symptoms, Ghostcrown?"
"He's shaking and flailing around. I don't think he could hear Jetfire talking to him, but it was hard to tell, I don't know how much kits can respond at that age." His own litter had been nearly two moons by the time he knew they existed, and he hadn't been around kits these young before. Secretkit definitely wasn't acting normal, though.

Jetfire kept close watch over her kit, licking him gently and nosing him while he flailed her muzzled already bleeding as his tiny claws hooked into her thin skin "I'm sorry" she repeated, sobbing. THe poison she has ingested to kill them all had affected all of her kits in one way or another. Secretkit had been having seizures since the day he had been born. Each time they seemed to be getting worse and worse, and she was powerless to do anything but position him so that he wouldn't choke. Bloodystar blamed the seizures on the poison she had taken to try and kill herself... At first she had tried to convince herself that it wasn't her fault, but hearing it over and over again had set in stone in her mind... All of her kits had something wrong with them, what else could it be that caused it? She knew no amount of apologies or prayers would ever be able to fix this...
Discordantmelody casually moved the fresh-kill she'd offered Jetfire away from the flailing kit, yawned, then took another bite of her own mouse. After chewing and swallowing it, she shook her head slightly and sighed, "Poor thing."
She made no move to assist Jetfire whatsoever.
At some point Secretkit's claws met Fawnkit's nose, causing the taupe she-cat to start screaming bloody murder, "MOOOOOOM I'M DYING!!!!" Her little heart was fluttering a mile a minute from the shock of it all and before long she was gasping for breath, "MOOOM! MOM! MOM!" She screamed and cried, which of course only worsened her condition.

"Your not dying" Jetfire cooed, trying to calm her down even though she was in tears herself. Fawnkit needed to stay calm to protect her weak heart, this kind of stress wasn't good for her. She wiped away her own tears even though all she wanted to was curl into a ball and just make it all go away. Her kits needed her. She nosed Fawnkit gently, leaving a little blood on her forehead "Secretkit is just having another seizure, his claw caught your nose is all. Look, he got me to" she kept her paw firmly on secretkit while she licked her daughter between the ears "Its going to be ok, it will stop soon" she forced a purr, trying to soothe her daughter "We will get you a cobwebs, and your nose will be all better"

Sparrowkit had been so tired. She had fallen asleep early after the world seemed to be dancing all around her. When she opened her eyes, she wasn’t in her den at all! This was a new place. She had woken up at the sound of her mother’s wails and Fawnkit’s screeching. The little kit had pinned her ears back, trying to ignore all the loud noises. It only made her head hurt. She covered her dual-covered eyes with her paws, hoping that it would help with the pounding headache. It didn’t work that well. Sparrowkit whimpered softly as she looked up at her mother and the strangers in the den. “Mommy? Mommy my head hurts...” The metallic colored kit whined softly. “Where’s daddy..? Is he here?” Sparrowkit tried to get to her paws, wondering if her father had just left to get them food. But she stumbled forward, her tiny frame shaking violently as he blood sugar started dropping rapidly. Sparrowkit spread her legs out, trying to keep her balance. But she swayed on her paws. She stumbled over again, this time falling back into her side as her convulsing form began to curl in on itself
