The half-moon shone above SunClan's territory as the new named Nightfury slipped from his new nest in the warrior's den into the night. His pawsteps didn't make a sound as they glided over the coarse sandstone beneath him. It was time, as always. No one awake, no one to see him. As soon as he exited the camp, he immediately turned towards the Lover's Lane tunnels. Once there, he entered them, but he didn't take the route that cats typically followed to the main cavern. Rather, he took a small offshoot tunnel into another small maze. Soon enough he wound up in his sanctuary.
The cave itself was sandstone and unremarkable. The dim moonlight illuminated the small cavern, and the precious contents it hid from the rest of the world. A clay tablet lay just outside of the moonbeam, which the dark tom immediately fixed upon entering. The tablet itself had the phases of the moon drawn in a circle surrounding a crudely drawn cat's face. But he knew who it was. He sat down and placed his paw on the tablet. Sobs shook the normally stoic tom and echoed throughout the tunnel system behind him. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He drew the tablet into an embrace and the sobs became louder. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."

It all should have went to plan. And the only reason it didn't was cause Sunnysmiles was a light sleeper.
They slept next to each other, to keep up appearances. She liked sticking to him for his warmth, since a simple breeze would cut through her pelt. Not that Sunnysmiles would tell him that. So when that warmth suddenly left, it made her eyes fly open. But she didn't move, she couldn't yet. Normally, she'd be up in a heartbeat but something held her back. Like a gentle bridle, guiding her the right way.
It's why it took her a moment to get up and follow him. Hiding behind rocks or tall patches of grass to hide like it was an elaborate hide and seek. And not what it was, her following him. Nightfury never opened up, he wasn't that kind of cat. And Sunny didn't mind, but she wouldn't deny her curiosity. Just who was he? Where did he come from? How did he have the inflict wounds on others by hurting himself? None of those answers would be answered so easily, so the ginger she-cat stuck to the wall as she followed him through Lover's Lane. Sunnysmiles lost him in the tunnels, but the sound of loud sobbing drew her the right way.
Coming across Nightfury in the empty cavern, she figured there had to be someone else. He wasn't capable of such a cry. Least she figured till his shoulders shuddered and he let out another sob. Bright amber eyes widened, was this really him. Maybe she was in a dream? But pinching herself didn't wake her up. So it must have been real. Sunnysmiles considered leaving, but she decided against it and took a few steps forward. This wasn't a time for anyone to be alone. "Nightfury...?"
His violent sobs drowned out the sounds of the approaching she-cat. If he knew, he would have stopped and hid or something. This was his moment to let himself grieve for the past, to atone for losing his family. Her voice made his sobs decrescendo until he could only hear the sound of his own breathing. She froze the pitch black tom in this volatile ritual. He never woke anyone before. How did she find him? His claws curled into the tablet. What could he do? She knew. She knew.
The tom placed the tablet on the ground with the care one would expect to be given to a kitten before turning around. His face, wet from tears, glistened in the moonbeam. "Why did you follow me?" His voiced quivered with sorrow and tension, and had a distinctive rasp from the tom's minimal habits. He had changed inside the confines of this cave. For these few moments each moon, he is who he was. "You were asleep. I checked." He looked to the ground and shook his head. "I never meant for you to see me like this. Please, leave."

Sunnysmiles was still a few paces behind him when he froze. It made her freeze mid-step, reluctantly pulling her paw back towards her as he placed the tablet down. He was so gentle, she didn't know he could be. She would open her mouth to speak, but stop. The way he spoke was so raw, so unabashed. It was like talking to another cat. There was so much sorrow built up, Sunnysmiles could feel herself consider tearing up because of it. She didn't settle down, but she also didn't look like she was about to leave either.
"I was. Castawayking must have bumped into me and woke me up again. I've always been a light sleeper, as you must have realized." She paused, taking a breath to calm her nerves. "I-I followed you 'c-c-cause I was worried about you. An-And, I don't think you should be alone right now, frankly." She suddenly straightened up, not letting that part fall to her usual stutter.
He wiped some of the moisture from his face as she spoke. The tom's gaze held no anger, nothing like it. It was raw, pure emotion for something long past, and it became one of shock. She was worried about him? He sighed. No one worried about him. Not anymore. They were paired because of Bloodystar's ego. How could that evolve into genuine concern?
"I-I don't know what to say. I am alone. I always have been since I came here. It's how things should be." He turned back around and stepped back into the moonbeam. He placed his paw on the drawing in the center, then outward. "You don't want to know me. We agreed to stay out of each other's way." His throat raw from the speaking, he broke out into a coughing fit. Nightfury felt no pain, but rather an irritation he could not itch. Still, the cough came from deep in his throat and echoed in the cavern. "

She was used to emotion. Used to her heart on her sleeve. Crying, getting angry, laughing. Some Sunclan cats would good at keeping a mask, concealing themselves from the world around them. Sunnysmiles was never that type. And was able to comfort someone enough to see those true colors. It wasn't really something she prided herself on, always just happy to help.
Though asking her not to care was like asking the sun not to shine. The wind not to blow. It was impossible, an attempt to render what they were created to do. Sunny didn't move right away, the cool stone under her paws growing warm. Shadows cast over her, like the doubt that clouded her mind. Maybe she should have minded her own business. Stayed sleeping and pretending like it was all normal. Her gaze settled on a stone in front of her before Nightfury broke into his hacking fit. Then her paws moved on their own.
Her feathery tail settled right behind his shoulders, gently tapping on him like a mother would her child. "I... can't change that thinking in one night. I believe no one is meant to be alone, no matter their past. That includes you. So you don't need to say anything or explain it. Of course, I'm curious, always have been. But I don't need to know." Sunnysmiles took a gulp of air as if the words tired her out. Sleep was only a faint twinkle in her eye. "I'll leave if you want. But I'd like to sit with you. For just a little bit."
He recognized that side of her in himself, or rather his past self. Before his last mate died, he loved. He had a family. He had people he would have given his life for. It gave him purpose and a reason to keep on living. Back then, they drove him to improve himself. Now he lived for himself. His reason to keep live was to find a reason to keep living. It kept the dark tom going, but it was far from convincing. So he locked himself away in the public eye, and let the really Nightfury out to weep alone.
Then her tail settled behind his shoulders, and he instinctively leaned into her. His first mate did the same thing when he was with her. It just came upon him to return the bit affection. Then he remembered. She was gone. All of it was gone. The moment ended as fast as it began when he pulled away.
I believe no one is meant to be alone, no matter their past. That includes you. So you don't need to say anything or explain it. Of course, I'm curious, always have been. But I don't need to know. A small headshake. Oh, she would run away if he told her things he had done, the things his demons wanted him to do. The things that he did to his apprentice on his first day of training. His inside only held ugliness and shame.
He let the silence drag on for what felt like hours to him. It could have been minutes, he would have had no way of knowing. Then he broke it. "Her name was Multiplesouls. Or Silver."

Sunnysmiles didn't move, almost too afraid too. That the moment he leaned away, he's fly away forever. It was almost a fear that kept her still. There was too much darkness in him for her to deal with alone, but she didn't realize that. She was always the giver, the healer. That's who she was. So she wanted to do her job, but this was going to be a slow and arduous one. Even a little headway would be nice.
So when he pulled away and her tail fell to the floor, Sunnysmiles held her breath. Waiting for him to disappear. Like a bird whose cage door was just opened. But he didn't, and she let the silence stretch on. The space between them was finally getting warmer when he spoke again, and her expression softened. "What lovely names..."
All at once the walls he so carefully constructed came crashing down. "Yeah, they were lovely names, and she was a lovely cat. The most beautiful she-cat in the world. She had gorgeous yellow eyes that blazed like the Sun, even when just the moon shone above." He gently stroked the stone tablet and took a deep breath. "I met her when I was an apprentice in Toxicity. I tried to push her over the edge of a waterfall." He laughed softly. "Foolish of me to think that would work."
"Our first date was hunting a cat down. It was spontaneous, wild... it was one of the best days of my life." The darkness that Sunnysmiles knew of had started to rear its ugly head, and Nightfury spoke of it as if he were talking about the weather. "We were meant to be. Actually meant to be, not like us."

Walls were like that. You would spend your life building up these walls and then it only takes a little nudge to send the whole thing toppling. Sunnysmiles knew there was more to the picture, but she couldn't help but gasp when he mentioned their first date. It wasn't unusual, she should have suspected something when Toxicity was mentioned. But still, it was that side of life of life, even that side of Sun that she never really explored. Pushed it away like it was some sort of fantasy, not the reality she was trapped in. "Sorry. Keep going." She whispered, but she didn't move. Sunnysmiles was in it for the long haul. "That does sound nice though. The feeling of meant to be." Sunny muttered to herself, a touch of longing in her voice.
"No, it's okay. It was a rather odd first date, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. We didn't find the guy, but it was fun. It was the first time I left my home, even if it was for a few hours. We bonded over that hunt, and... yeah. I would die for her, if she was still around." Then he stopped. It still hurt. "She left, without even saying goodbye. I searched for her, and couldn't find her. I couldn't look my kits in the eye, so I left them and MoonClan. I never knew my kits very well, but I couldn't live without her. And now here I am. Pouring my heart out to some she-cat I barely know."

Sunnysmiles listened still, her face scrunched in concentration as she stared down at her paws. That was all she was. It wasn't like either of them went to the effort of learning more about each other, but for some reason, it still hurt. To live without someone, to belong. They still felt like foreign concepts. She had just been floating through life on the whims of others, but what about her? Nightfury wouldn't realize how much he made her question this. Cause even if she wanted to bridge that gap, that wasn't her role.
"I'm sorry you've had to go through all this. But it's okay to express it. You can let it all out, I won't judge." Sunnysmiles tried to lower her head to meet his gaze. but she might have just missed it. Her voice was low, calming, willing Nightfury to go further and let it all out. Cats usually felt better after they did, she hoped he would too.
The dark tom glanced over, and he saw something on her face. It was an emotion, yes, but he couldn't quite place it. His emotional intelligence was hardly existent, and on top of that his was having something of a breakdown himself. "Don't lie to me. You're judging me right now. Everyone always does. That's why Silver was so perfect. We understood each other so well. There was no need for judgement." He fell silent, and once again stared at the stone tablet at his paws. He then slid his paw over and lifted Sunnysmile's onto it. He put his paw on top to hold it there. "Thank you. Maybe on the next full moon, I'll tell you more, but we must be going before anyone notices our absence."

Sunnysmiles didn't answer right away. She just stared down at her paws. It felt like she was going in circles all evening, but one thing stuck out. They really didn't know each other. It would have been so easy to laugh and say it wasn't all about him. Or that she was judging him and not jealous of what he had. It was really better to love and have lost than to have never loved at all.
She could swear up and down she wasn't judging, but he must have had his mind made up. She didn't struggle against his grip, one of her toes rubbing against the tablet gently. "You're right." Sunnysmiles took a deep breath, "and thank you."
He lifted his paw from on top of hers and laid it on the tablet. "No, thank you." With that he pushed the tablet back into the corner of the room. Nightfury knew he wasn't the only one who knew about these caves, and he didn't want anyone to discover this tablet. He didn't fear getting in trouble with the Priest, but rather some cat messing with it or moving it. "Please, don't talk about this with anyone."

Sunnysmiles waited in her spot until Nightfury put the tablet back before standing up. She was still processing everything, and how it made her feel, made her think about herself. She flexed the claws out of one of her paws, watching them curl in towards her paw. They were... predators after all. It was only natural. Breaking out of that thought when Nightfury approached her again, she nodded. "I promise I won't." Sunnysmiles whispered, this time letting her sheathed paw rest on top of his' for a moment, like it would make her more trustworthy somehow. "Let's get out of here and find something to eat. I'm starving." She laughed, the first to spin and walk towards the exit.
