It was slightly before all that drama with the other Forest Clans happened. It was also that time of year when the old kittypets were getting whiny about the lack of food they were used to. So Goldenphantom brought together her battalion to head over towards the southern border, closer to Primal Instinct. Even if they were supposed allies, she was glad they mostly kept to herself. She didn't really wanna see them again. But, a mission was a mission. The route they normally take had been washed out by a recent storm. So when she brought her battalion around a different path, they found something they weren't very familiar with.
Monsters lined the ground, but rather than roaring, they were eerily silent. The ground was hard, now on asphalt. Shattered glass littered the ground, the insides of the monsters pulled out and leaving them hollow shells of themselves. "Oh boy. Well, steady on." Goldenphantom could already feel her apprentices were going to cause chaos, but she pushed forward.
"Keep your paws up, you don't want to slip and fall," Divepaw reminded the group as he wove through them. Though newly promoted, he had immediately taken on a teacher's pet role and was all too happy to help the other apprentices out. The black-and-white tom sprang past the others to walk near Goldenphantom's shoulder, his eyes widening appreciatively at the new view.
Sootpaw was getting too old for these apprentice tasks. The pitch-black she-cat followed the group with a bored expression on her face. Smokepaw should be here, too, but the coward hadn't even showed up. Typical.
At the sight of the monsters, her heart rate sped up but she kept her face schooled. What had happened to those huge beasts? And what could it do to a mere cat...

Goldenphantom looked between the monsters and her group. They weren't moving, maybe it was safe. "Maybe they're monster kits. Even they need to sleep sometimes." She said it optimistically, a laugh in her throat, though the things around them looked more dead than sleeping. "Keep on your toes, we still need to get through here."
Surfpaw was another new apprentice, though he rolled his eyes at his brother's sudden desire to suck up at any opportune moment. He lagged in the back of the group, somewhat focused on keeping his back leg in check on the new terrain. When he rounded the corner with the others, his eyes widened at the monsters. And he felt an opportunity approaching, something he definitely should not do. But he needed help. So he turned to the first cat by his side, which happened to be Sootpaw. "Hey. Wanna stir up some trouble with me?"
Sootpaw lifted an eyebrow at the apprentice beside her. He was much younger than her and she had to resist the urge to sigh at the contact. But the words were interesting. Sootpaw was more of a follower than a leader, but she tended to follow the strong. Surfpaw had grabbed her interest with his words, but she wasn't quite sure she was more willing to follow him than Goldenphantom yet.
"Possibly," she said simply, keeping her eyes trained forward and her tone dead.

Surfpaw seemed satisfied with this supposed help. Help only made things a little easier on him, but it wasn't completely necessary. The group was still milling by the entrance, letting the little apprentice squeeze himself through the piles of metal and scrap. It was taking Goldenphantom a lot of ushering to get them to move forward, definitely not helped by Surfpaw as he pulled himself into one of the monsters. It didn't move, just sat there. This one was full of buttons that begged to be pressed, and the first one he did made the monster erupt with a loud noise. Like a shrill goose was stuck in it. The sound made Goldenphantom jump.
"You heard Goldenphatom, keep on your toes," Divepaw lectured, nodding wisely as she explained these were monster kits. He was the first to squeeze through the piles, taking the lead since their mentor was helping everyone else through. He paced in a small circle, vigilant enough he saw his brother's tail disappear into a monster.
"Surfpaw, get back here-" he yelped at the sudden roar of the monster and sprang back, his short pelt sticking on end as his legs went stiff and trembling. "WHAT WAS THAT?!"

Somewhere, in the back, Goldenphantom rolled her eyes. Divepaw clung to her words as a bear did honey. Or maybe a cat did a mouse. Fiercely, maybe even protective. She wondered what it was like to be raised by three of the biggest names in the forest. The sort of pride yet unrest that could come from it. How words from someone stable would affect them. It would have made her glad until that monster cried out. It was like it was in pain, but also alerting them of some danger. She wasn't sure.
"Oh don't you guys know?" Where Surfpaw was just in the monster a moment ago, he suddenly appeared at the back of the group. Grey fur was frazzled like clouds before a thunderstorm. The group turned to him, a smile crossed his face like a break in said clouds. "I heard this part of the territory was built on an ancient graveyard! They say those that go into this place relive the memories of countless warriors getting hit by monsters before getting crushed themselves. You remember, right Sootpaw?"
She listened to Surfpaw's words, the only emotion on her face a raised eyebrow. "Sure," she replied in a bored tone. Truthfully, Sootpaw was becoming interested in the other apprentice's plans, but she kept this to herself. If she wasn't careful she'd make a friend or something. Her gaze fell onto the monster skeletons. They were horrifying. Divepaw was going to be scared like a kit if Surfpaw didn't stop. Why wasn't Sootpaw stopping him again? strawberrycupid
"Yeah right," Divepaw scoffed. "That's just an old queens' tale. Everyone knows there are no such things as ghosts or haunted graveyards." Still, his short black-and-white started to ruffle, and he glanced about himself suspiciously. Goldenphantom wouldn't lead them somewhere dangerous, right? She would keep them safe. He crept closer to a monster skeleton and rested his paw tentatively on its large black paw. It was so firm and stiff, not unlike his own pads, but as he looked up at it his breath was taken away by the hollow shell. It was like a giant bottle, and it was glaring right at him with those broken eyes.
"The monsters themselves aren't awake, right guys?" he asked nervously.
