Another morning brought the same routine for SummerClan's proud deputy, Dawnmemories. She woke up and immediately sorted the patrols, checked in with Ratstar, made sure the elders ate, and then went for a short walk before joining the sunhigh hunting patrol, after which she would finally eat something. The same thing day after day. It certainly couldn't be called boring but it seemed to lack opportunity. Sure, SummerClan seemed to more or less have warmed up to her deputyship and Ratstar was the mentor and leader she'd believed he was, but there had been nothing heroic to prove Dawnmemories was a valuable and necessary addition to her clan. Perhaps it was selfish, but as she waded across the creek and padded towards the half-bridges the she-cat found her mood darkening and her tail dragging listlessly in the dirt behind her.

"Hey! Don't you know you can get ants in your pelt if you let your tail drag along the ground?" Pantherclaw asked cheerfully. She set the squirrel she was carrying down at her feet. "Especially if you drag it over an ant hill." She indicated the small mound of earth just in front of Dawnmemories. The industrious little insects were scurrying all around their home. Some were carrying bits of food into a small hole near the top while others were leaving the ant hill on quests only known to them.

Dawnmemories jumped at the sound of her clanmate's voice, looking slightly confused and embarrassed as she paused just before the anthill. "Oh, hi there Pantherclaw, thanks for the heads up." There was a slightly forced chipper note in her voice and she could hear it for herself but she tried to move on before this got awkward. "Great catch," she added, nodding to the healthy looking squirrel at her clanmate's paws.

"Thanks," the black she cat meowed. She could sense something was bothering her deputy and wondered what it could be. It wasn't in her nature to just to ask right out but her curiosity was aroused just the same. Perhaps if she'd start a conversation with Dawnmemories she might want to talk about whatever was on her mind. Although the two never really hung out together much, it could be she might want a friendly listening ear of a clanmate. "Nice day for a hunt, especially since these days are going to become less and less as the colder weather arrives. So is that what you're up to? Hunting as well?"

"No," Dawnmemories admitted, trying to shake the cloud of her mood away and focus on her clanmate, "I wasn't hunting. I was just out for a walk." She was worried momentarily about coming across as lazy. Conscious of that, she added, "hunting sounds absolutely wonderful right now though, do you mind if I join you?"

"No, not at all," Pantherclaw replied. "Hunting is always better with two cats." She could still sense something was occupying Dawnmemories mind. Perhaps hunting for the clan would help clear her thoughts, she thought to herself. "So where would you like to hunt? I just caught this squirrel over there," she indicated the place with her tail. "So that area's probably out." Her catch wasn't so clean. The squirrel started to chatter before she was able to silence it.
