A day and a half after his exile, a blustering wind tearing through his coat, Ghostcrown crested the hill above the SwiftClan camp.
Today's camp was nestled against a short cliff and surrounded by thick, waxy bushes that protected it from the wind. As he entered the camp, the wind died away until it was just a quiet shuffling overhead, frustrated by its inability to penetrate the rocky overhang. The tom looked around carefully as he entered, anticipating an attack - more than one cat had seen him on his way here, yet none had cared to chase him, one had simply nodded hello and continued on - but surely after the last battle they faced, the nomadic clan would be a little more careful?
Ghostcrown took a few steps into the camp and cleared his throat.
"Ah-- hello. I'm looking for Firetooth and Windsk-- Breezestep?"
As luck would have it, Firetooth was already outside when his older brother arrived, passing a small bundle of herbs to a petite black she-cat for her to chew on. The she-cat in question gave the leaves a look of mild disgust, but she was quickly shut down by a glare from the Medicine Cat himself. "I don't care what you say, Tinybreath. Do you really think I haven't noticed you wheezing lately, with the wind and cold air around here? Just shut up and eat the herbs now, or your family will find out and just drag you back here later." The she-cat - Tinybreath - rolled her eyes but reluctantly began to eat the leaves, glancing up curiously as Ghostcrown's announcement.
Hearing the sound of his name, Firetooth turned in surprise, blinking in disbelief for a moment before his green gaze subtly lit up at the sight of his adopted sibling. "Ghostcrown," the ginger tom meowed, leaving his patient behind and immediately bounding over to the other tom. For a brief moment he felt the urge to touch noses with his brother, but resisted it for the time being. "It's good to see you again," he settled on instead. "What brings you to Swiftclan? Breezestep's in the warrior's den, are you here to visit her?"
"Long time no see, little brother," Ghostcrown lit up at the sight of him, overflowing with relief, "I see Bloodystar hasn't killed you yet after all! You must be mad, going after the Sun God like that. You're an inspiration to everyone, just like you always wanted," he teased.
What brings you to SwiftClan?
"Firetooth, I..." Ghostcrown swallowed hard, looking down at his paws. His shaky smile fell to pieces and he couldn't bring them back together. Even after the floods, he had always been the optimistic one, chatting their ears off and never forgetting to smile, but the weight of the last few days finally struck him, and it hit hard. He had pushed away what he couldn't deal with, pushed on toward his goal, but now he was here. He was with his family and now he had nothing to keep the grief at bay.
He sniffed, and he said quietly, "Let's just say I'm not as heroic as you are. I-I'll tell you more, but let's get Breezestep first, okay? I don't think I can tell this story twice."
"Ghostcrown...?" Whatever sharp comment Firetooth was about to make about the Sun God or Sunclan's new 'leader' fell silent upon noticing how absolutely broken his older brother was. The Medicine Cat raked through his memory, the seasons that the two of them had spent together; even during the flood that destroyed their home for good, when they stood vigil over Creekghost's dead body and comforted Breezestep through the night, not once, not ever in his memory could he remember ever seeing his brother cry. But Sunclan had done it. Sunclan had broken him. A dark shadow crossed over the ginger tom's face at the realization, and he could almost feel the fire burning behind his green eyes. "Ghostcrown," he repeated, his voice as cold as stone. "What has Bloodystar done?"
His heart ached to know just what happened to his brother, and yearned for swift and immediate vengeance, but at Ghostcrown's request to talk to both him and their mother, he simply nodded, gesturing towards a large holly bush that settled close to the cliff. "She's in there. I'll meet you both there shortly, but I'm going to get Chimerastar. He needs to hear this."
By the time Firetooth and Chimerastar returned, Ghostcrown had a grip on himself again. He waited for them patiently with Breezestep at his side; she lay down watching him with worried eyes, sensing that something terrible had occurred though he hadn't told her anything yet. Chim glanced between the group, then sat and curling his tail over his paws.
"When Bloodystar became leader, he took Littlecrow's daughter as a mate," Ghostcrown began evenly. "They had been friends before, and he told everyone he was the father of her kits, so it made sense. Some cats were unhappy about it, Jetfire herself didn't seem thrilled, so I decided to look into it. She was looking after her siblings at the time, so I had my litter play with hers, and found a chance to talk to her."
His gaze unfocused as he fought to hold back his grief. "Never let a queen suffer unjustly, right? I tried to help her, I tried to help her escape. I knew Bloodystar would kill me for it, but I didn't expect... Well, one thing led to another, he accused me of trying to poison her. Threw me into the prison to await execution."
Ghostcrown looked up to Firetooth. Grief choked his mew as he went on. "My kittens didn't understand why I was going to die, but they didn't believe that I was guilty, and that was enough. I figured Jetfire would tell them the truth when all this was over... but instead," his voice grew bitter, "she told the entire clan that it was true. She convinced everyone that I'm a murderer, that I tried to kill a pregnant queen, my friend, and they believed her. My daughter believed her."
His claws sank into the ground. SunClan was immoral, the fact that he would never kill a cat meant nothing to them, they wouldn't believe it. But his family knew how much Ghostcrown had struggled with his father; Creekghost had been the one to save his life, after all, when his discoveries nearly destroyed him. He would never kill another cat, it was the one line he would never cross, the one thought he couldn't bear. His father was a mass murderer and he was determined to never, ever be like him, and yet here he was, brought down to the same low. Jetfire had made him into his own worst enemy.
If Firetooth had been angry before, he was absolutely furious now, the pure rage he felt on his brother's behalf nearly making his blood boil. His brother was one of the most kind, good-natured cats he had ever known; the very thought that he would attempt cold-blooded murder was ridiculous! His heart was also touched, that Ghostcrown had taken his personal beliefs about caring for Queens to so much heart that he had been willing to risk Bloodystar's wrath to try and help a Queen escape a bad situation. However, the more he thought over his older brother's story, the more something bothered him.
"Ghostcrown," he finally meowed, the Medicine Cat's voice gravely serious. "You said that Bloodystar framed you for poisoning Jetfire. That's an oddly specific accusation to make, especially if he was simply trying to find an excuse to kill you. Was Jetfire actually poisoned by someone? And if she was, why would Bloodystar go after you, instead of the real culprit? No matter what Bloodystar feels about Jetfire, leaving someone with the ruthlessness to poison a Queen free and alive does not seem like a smart or even rational move for him." His eyes narrowed on his brother, the gears turning in his head. "And why would Jetfire lie and say that you did it, when I assume both of you know you didn't? Was it just to keep you from execution?"
Breezestop hugged Ghostcrown tightly against her chest, nearly suffocating the tomcat in her fluffy fur, though he didn't have the heart to push her away. "She was poisoned," he agreed, meeting Firetooth's gaze steadily, "and Bloodystar knows who did it; he knows they aren't a threat anymore. She had to protect herself and I suppose that was her way of keeping me from being executed too. That's all I can tell you." Ghostcrown had always planned on taking that secret to the grave, he just didn't realize he had quite so long to wait. Jetfire had betrayed him, but he would do this one last thing for her. He had to get her to safety.
Jetfire had done what she could to save his life - he knew that. He had known it then too, but the revelation didn't make his wounds sting any less.
"Why am I here, Firetooth?" Chim interjected quietly, his hooded half-gaze focused on the medicine cat. "What are you asking me to do?"
