The name, now more than ever, sat like a stale mouse on his tongue. Bloodystar must have thought it humorous to apprentice him on the eve before his father's execution, and he could recall the tom's eyes flickering like wildfire as he sneered the name. Now more than ever, he wished he could disappear, blink away into the night until he and it were indiscernible from each other, and he could pave a new life for himself among fields of starlight and tumbling winds and freedom.
But he couldn't do that. Crowpaw could no sooner steal away from his home, his siblings' home, than he could stand trial in place of Ghostcrown.
He bit his lip and hissed at the pain, but the copper that seared against his tongue matched the heat his heart pumped through his veins. He stalked through the territory aimlessly, no destination in mind other than to be anywhere other than camp, as he knew as soon as the sun reproached the moon from its skyward pedestal, his life would be made forever unstable. Crowpaw repressed the tears he felt stinging at the edge of his periphery, missing the form of another cat until his ears twitched at the sound of a twig snap. "Who's there?" Apprehension and malice held hands in his tone, and he felt as though there were flames breathing out his mouth between every word.

Crowpaw had made it clear enough that he wanted nothing to do with him, but Honeysplash couldn't just leave Ghostcrown's son to deal with this on his own. It was to much for even a full grown warrior to handle, much less cats that had only just left their kithood "It's just me... Honeysplash" his voice was soft, the same voice he used with his own children. He gave the young cat a respectful distance, not forcing the young cat to get close to him "Look I know you probably don't want to speak with me and I don't blame you. But I promised your dad that if something happened to him, I would try to help you and your siblings" he paused, giving some time for his words some time to sink in
"I don't expect to ever replace your father, he is a great cat. He doesn't deserve what happened today, but even though I disagree I can't stop what is going to happen tomorrow.. But there is something I can do for you and your siblings. I have arranged for you to be able to go and see your father tonight, to get the chance to speak with him in private. The guard on duty tonight owes me a favor, but we need to go quickly. You will only have until the guards change. Your siblings are waiting on us"
Where his father's features were a patchwork of black and white, Honeysplash's were an uninterrupted shade of gold. Similarly, his kindness showed no falter, despite the cut sliced into his nose from Crowpaw's own claws. He felt a sharp stab of regret as he glimpsed it, and, with tears springing forth anew, he chose to look elsewhere, transfixing his grimace at nothing in particular. A leaf, caught in his eyeline, seemed to almost shiver with fright. "I... I'm sorry, Honeysplash. I'm not mad at you for anything," he finally exhaled. The words were carried by a long sigh which seemed to bear the weight of all his pent up emotions, and Crowpaw visibly deflated. "I'm upset with myself for lashing out at you, and I'm upset at Bloodystar for everything that's happening, and at the clan for supporting him-- but you, I can't be mad at. I appreciate what you're doing for my father, my siblings, and... and for me." It needed to be said; the dark cat was angry at the world-- and, yes, he certainly wanted to see Bloodystar fall-- but he would not let himself be angry at the few cats in his corner.
When Honeysplash continued his next words caused Crowpaw's breath to catch again, and he felt frozen in time, as if the illusion may shatter if he so much as breathed. He... he was going to have a chance to tell his father goodbye? He couldn't stop the tears from flowing now. "T-thank you, Honeysplash," he said earnestly between small hiccups, but he did his best to regain composure and nodded to show he was ready to follow the warrior.

Honeysplash let his tail gently draped onto the young cat's shoulder "You have nothing to apologize for Crowpaw, you just had your father taken from you with no warning. You have every right to be angry.. I'm angry" he rose to his paws, using his tail to gently guide the apprentice back towards the prison where his siblings would be waiting for them to enter in to see their father "I am only doing what any decent cat should, the same that I hope someone would do for me if the situation was reversed. You don't owe me anything" as the prison began to come into view he whispered more quietly to Crowpaw "No matter what happens tomorrow, just know that I am here for you and your siblings. If there is anything I can do, all you have to do is ask"
Honeysplash gathered the siblings, nodding to Romancefable as the tom stood guard outside of the prison "I will wait here" he mewed to the young cats, pointing into the darkness "Your father is inside, and I want to give you some time alone with him. I'll be watching out for the next guard change with Romancefable. Remember you don't have a lot of time, so listen carefully for a whistle. It means that cats are approaching and you need to get out quickly. I will do my best to distract them" with that he turned back, taking up post on the outside of the entrance
Ghostcrown curled up in the corner of the prison, staring quietly at the bleak walls surrounding him. He knew he wouldn't be sleeping tonight. His last hours alive would be spent cramped up here, alone and afraid, but he couldn't just let go and fall asleep, or the end would come sooner than he wanted it to.
His ear twitched at sounds outside of his prison, and he looked up and toward the entrance, squinting for light.
Crowpaw was the first to slip into the den, passing his siblings and Honeysplash, though not before he gave the warrior an appreciative mew. "Da!" Ghostcrown looked haggard, subdued, but he was alive right now and that's all that mattered to his son. He lurched forward and threw himself against his father's patched side for what he thought would be the very last time.
Raypaw stared into the dark prison as if she had no idea what creature resided in its depths. In some sense, it was true. She didn't know what her father was. She wanted to believe that he had nothing to do with it. There was just no way that he would poison Jetfire, but... he did spend a lot of time with her. Her fleeting thoughts disappeared as Crowpaw slid past her. She followed close behind her brother, then pausing to adjust to the light. The snow bengal's icy eyes soon landed on her father, and she ran to him. She reached up and touched her nose to his. "Hey... Dad."

Desertpaw came in after his other siblings, not as overly affectionate as the others. Instead he was giving his father a hard stare, refusing to admit that this was the last time that they were going to see one another. He kept quiet a few moments before speaking "I will prove you didn't do this" his voice was flat and devoid of emotion, looking unbothered "So I am not going to say goodbye"
"..." Spiritpaw was the last to arrive. She was the most indoctrinated of her siblings and, up until now, saw her future in SunClan. Sure, now where dark times, but it made sense giving that their God was dead. She wanted to be here when he reincarnated and be a part of the Clan's return to grace. She pictured her and her family rejoicing in the moment, living long and happy lives together in the strongest Clan of them all.
But now that picture of her future was shattered, impossible.
Spiritpaw placed herself firmly at the prison entranced and did not join the rest of her siblings as they snuggled with Ghostcrown. She didn't look angry, just very sad and confused. She loved her father very much, but, to protect herself, she was beginning to pull away. A question danced on her tongue but she didn't dare ask it.
"Crowpaw?" Ghostcrown's choked mew was filled with disbelief. How did his family make it down here? He tucked his son against him with a purr, reaching a paw over his back and snuggling him closer. Then he tilted his head back, touching noses with Raypaw and restraining himself from pulling her into his embrace as well. Though it must have only been hours, it felt like moons had passed since he had seen them last; his heart ached to see his kittens so hesitant, but he understood.
But did Spiritpaw have to stand so far away?
He sobered as he looked at them and shook his head once. "I'm glad to see all of you," he murmured with an inclusive look at his more reluctant children, "even under these circumstances. I never intended to hurt you like this. One day, after I'm gone, you'll understand why, but I don't expect you to forgive me for it."
Ghostcrown looked up at Desertpaw, blinking away his grief. He had to be strong now, commanding, if he wanted to keep them safe. "No, Desertpaw. You're not going to prove anything. This is how it has to be."
They all filed in behind him, though Raypaw was the only other one to approach Ghostcrown, a thought that brought great bitterness to the dark cat nestled as closely as he could be to his father. Spiritpaw in particular had earned a blistering look; he couldn't quite understand how even Desertpaw had come closer than her, given his brother's seemingly unaffected state during their earlier powwow. Crowpaw decided to address it later and ream his sister out for her coldness-- instead, his eyes fell on Ghostcrown as he felt his father begin to speak, and every word intoned deep within him, threaded through by purrs and then a more distinct note of finality, which he thought he could even feel against Ghostcrown's side.
"Why aren't you fighting more, da?" whispered his son.
Crowpaw's gaze was baleful and brimmed with sorrow, confusion, but most of all a deep-seated, turbulent sea of wrath. It lapped at the edges of his irises, lit fires in the gold, and scorched through the gilted happiness that once blazed there in its stead.
They'd all watched him be dragged through the dirt and thrown at the paws of Bloodystar. They'd all watched him resign to his fate without much argument. They'd all heard him by sentenced to death right before their eyes, and they'd watched as Ghostcrown accepted it as if a gift from a lifelong friend. It still perplexed Crowpaw, wondering why he had been more outspoken than his own father, and he sought answers now, those baleful eyes meeting his father's somber ones.
She shook her head. She thought he was a fighter. "I won't ever understand why. You're a good person. You'd never hurt someone like that." She pushed her nose deeper into his chest. "They're lying. Someone else did it, and you're just..." She sobbed and brought a paw around her father. "We will find out who did this. We will bring you back here." She looked up into his eyes. Sorrow overflowed from her wet eyes. "Mom left us, I'm not going let you go too, you pile of mouse dung." A small smile crept onto her face. She remembered that it was the first the she called him when the met.

Desertpaw's lip curled up "Father, you lost your right to stop us from investigating when you got yourself thrown in here with the threat of death looming over you" he rose to his paws, giving his siblings and father one last longing look "The truth will come out one or another. You are trying to protect someone else, but I won't allow you to put your life at risk for them. I'm not going to waste time here, when I should be finding proof" he began to pad out of the den, looking back over his shoulder one more time before leaving
His eyes misted. Their little family had come so far if they were willing to fight for him even now.
"The truth won't change anything, Desertpaw," he warned, struggling to rise to his paws and reach for the departing apprentice without leaving his family. Ghostcrown didn't plan on telling them what happened at all, but the thought of being alone again sent an unbearable wave of panic through him. If this was his last night alive, he wanted to spend it with his family.
"The truth won't change anything, so please, don't look for it. It's better if it never comes out. The clan might think I'm a- a killer, but you'll always know better and that's enough."
On his deathbed, and he was still protecting her. His brother had made it look so easy but Ghostcrown barely had the strength to look his children in the eye now.

"Of course it matters" Desertpaw snapped, his tail lashing back and forth. If the truth didn't matter, than what did? He had already figured out parts of the puzzle before him, and the words his father just spoke cut him deeply "Dad... If I do nothing you are going to die" his voice was flat and emotionless "I know you are dong this to protect someone. I don't know who or why" he muttered bitterly not looking back at him or his siblings "but whomever your protecting, shouldn't we matter more? We are your children, not them!" the last words came out more as a shriek, as he raced out of the den and past Honeysplash into the darkness a glint in his eyes. No he wasn't about to let this go.
"That's enough..." Spiritpaw finally spoke up, slowly approaching the ball of cats that surrounded her father. She was always a hard one to read, a trait inherited by her mother no doubt, "He's made up his mind. There's no point in trying to talk him out of it. He could fight all he wants but he's right; it won't change anything."
She brushed based her siblings and embraced her father, resting her head against his shoulder and letting out a fragile purr, the kind she always made when faced with uncertainty, "You're the biggest mouse-brain, you know that?"
Ghostcrown opened his mouth to speak but his son was already exiting the den. He sighed heavily and sank back to the ground, leaning into Spiritpaw. "Hey-" he began to protest, then he cut off with a small smile. "Yeah, you're right. I am being a mouse brain. I think Creekghost thought the same thing when we were first training... I think I got it from my mother. She was such a sweet cat, though."
He paused them, seeming to realize then that he was getting lost in memories. Ghostcrown talked about Creekghost often, he had adored his mentor and adopted father, but he never spoke about his birth parents, not even to his family. He sighed, resting his chin back down on his daughter's head.
"I hope you understand someday why I'm doing this... but I understand too if you're upset with me."
Crowpaw seethed. Whatever faint, flickering light of hope he had was snuffed out, feeling resignation in Ghostcrown's mew. They were here pleading and begging at his paws, willing to stand between him and the devil, and still he warned them away, offered his own head and toted it right up to the silver platter for Bloodystar. His tears dried and his resolve strengthened, as he rose and strode away from where his father was now surrounded by only his sisters. "Desertpaw is right. Your children should matter more to you than anything else. What father doesn't fight for his kits?" He was angry-- it was the only explanation for why he would weaponize vicious words against the black-and-white tom.
