Paintedcanyon felt his left ear twitch again as it was prone to do. He had grown used to it, and found it to be an admirable quirk. Something that made him who he is. The long furred time gave himself a quick stretch as he worked his muscles in preparation for what was to come. He was a mentor now. He had an apprentice. He was determined to show her everything that he learned. A smile played at his muzzle as he thought of all he could offer. But, where was Desertpaw, he wondered. racer

Desertpaw
SunClan Apprentice
The Inquisitive
Instead of meeting up with his mentor, Desertpaw had become distracted with a bug that he had found on his way to their meeting spot. The little beatle had been cracked open, a strange fowl smelling liquid spilling from it. He streaked the slimy substance between his claws, his mind at working coming up with uses for it. Could it be used as medicine? To hide one's scent? As a thickening agent for paint?

Paintedcanyon waited a few more moments before he decided to look for his apprentice. The tomcat hoped that nothing had happened to Desertpaw. His eyes scanned every part of the forest, looking out for anything that could be a clue. "Desertpaw?" The dark ginger cat called. "Desertpaw, where are you?" Paintedcanyon tasted the air briefly before he picked up on the apprentice's scent. He quickly followed the trail until he could see the young tom's silhouette. "There you are"

Desertpaw didn't really look up from his task, instead looking at Paintedcanyon through the slime between his claws with fascination "There you are, about time" he snapped, almost sounding irritated like it was she that was the one that was late "I have already disected the beatle, and its time for stage two of the experiment. Come lay down here at my paws, I'm going to put this slime in your ear"

Paintedcanyon let out a silent chuckle before he looked up at the sky. May the sun god help him, he certainly had an interesting apprentice didn't he. "Will this slime suddenly help my hearing in this one?" He asked as his left ear started twitching rapidly again. The ginger tom walked over to his apprentice, crouching down carefully to inspect the beetle. His lips curled and his nostrils flared at the foul-smelling aroma that wafted off the bug, and the long furred tom sat back with soft grunt. "That would definitely clear out a fox hole in no time."

Desertpaw shrugged his shoulders "It might, or it might take away what little hearing you have left" without waiting on an answer, Desertpaw took the opportunity to swipe his claws into his mentor's ear, smearing the slime heavily inside even though he didn't scratch the flesh and using his other paw to clamp the flap down so that none would escape "Just hold still and we will find out"

Paintedcanyon tried his best not to squirm at the feeling, as was more than thankfully that Desertpaw didn't accidentally cut him with his claws. "Aren't I the one that's supposed to be teaching you?" The tomcat asked, resisting the urge to lift his paw up and rub his left ear. It felt clogged now, and he hoped that the pair could find a way to clean his ear out before returning to camp. But experimentation was just another part of education, so in a way, Paintedcanyon supposed that he was still doing his job as a mentor... despite the unorthodox methods it seemed.

Desertpaw tilted his head to the side, not commenting at first as he watched his new mentor "In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn" he waited for a few moments, lowering his voice to where it was almost unaudble "If you can hear me touch your nose"

"Wise words indeed, my young padawan." Paintedcanyon said with an amused chuckle. The long furred tom sat up straight, his fluffy tail curling around his paws if only to keep him from rubbing his left ear. He could still hear his apprentice from his right ear, where the hearing had grown sharper to make up for the defects of his left ear. The dark ginger tom touched his paw to his nose. "Perhaps, I should cover my right ear?"

"Ideally we would remove you hearing from that ear completely, but I supposed covering it for now will have to do" he replied, moving away from his mentor to put some more distance between them and then whispering "If you can hear me scratch your neck"

"I'm already deaf in one ear, I would much rather keep the hearing in my good ear." Paintedcanyon said with a nervous chuckle. He watched Desertpaw walk away and carefully held his paw up to his right ear. The muffled silence he heard was nerve-wracking. He didn't like this feeling much. He tilted his head when he saw Desertpaw speaking to him, but couldn't hear what he was saying. Instead he simply touched his nose once more

"Well mouse dung" he replied, kicking a pebble with his tail flickering behind him. It seemed like his experiment had failed. He padded over to his mentor, his fur bristled out "We will try something else soon, until I can get your hearing back"

Paintedcanyon chuckled, and patted his apprentice on the back. "Don't worry about it, Desertpaw. I've lived all my life with this ear of mine. I've gotten used to it. I'm afraid it would be a big adjustment if I were to suddenly regain hearing in that ear." The ginger tom offered him a smile. "But I've got an idea for another experiment. Figuring out the best way to get all of this goo out of my ear now."

"Adjustment sure, but improvement definitely" he rolled his shoulders at her suggestion "That isn't much of an experiment" his voice flat "Clean it out the same way you would any other herb, run some water over it" he rose to his paws walking towards the river and point downward "Head under, go on"

Paintedcanyon followed the young apprentice, his tail swaying rhythmically behind him. "To be honest, Desertpaw, I don't mind my ear the way it is." The long furred tom gently crouched down by the river. He tilted his head at an odd angle as he dipped half of it into the river. He careful used his paw to rub at his ear, carefully digging the goop out with his claw. "After all. It's a part of who I am"

Honestly the words his mentor just spoke didn't make any sense to him, but he didn't linger on it. As Paintedcanyon dipped his head into the water, he turned away picking up several rocks weight them with his paws testing the weight until he found the right one and snapped a vine off of that was growing on a near by tree almost completly forgetting about the ear thing since Paintedcanyon wasn't interested. He tied the vine around his waist, and pushed the rock towards the river bank glancing back up at Paintedcanyon "Well time to test my next theory" turning away from his mentor her raced back with a hollowed out pumpkin on his head, the slime trickling down onto his fur "You see when something hollow is put on the water it traps air inside it...." he tied the vine onto the rock, and before his mentor could react, he pushed the stone over the ledge reaching up to grab ahold of the pumpkin as he was dragged underwater by the heavy weight. After several moments, the pumpkin floated up to the surface but Desertpaw was no where to be seen

When Paintedcanyon was satisfied that he had taken out all of the goop, he carefully stood back up and gave his head a quick shake. "That's better..." He said with a small smile. He watched his apprentice curiously as he began to gather more materials for what he could only assume was another experiment. The long furred tom tried to make sense of the materials he gathered. Why would he need a hollowed-out gourd? And why the rock? Before he could ask he watched as Desertpaw pushed the rock into the river and in effect get pulled under the water. Paintedcanyon couldn't even get his apprentice's name out of his mouth before he had dove into the water. Paintedcanyon re-emerged quickly, around the same time that the pumpkin began bobbing along the surface of the water. The long furred tom dove down once more. When he managed to find Desertpaw he quickly severed the vine, grabbing his apprentice by the scruff and paddling back to the surface eagerly. With a soft growl, being dragged down himself by his thick fur, Paintedcanyon made his way back towards the river's edge with Desertpaw in tow

Desertpaw held on tightly to the pumpkin as he went under the water. At first it was working, and he was able to breathe in the air that had been trapped inside the pumpkin for a few seconds as he descended deeper and deeper, but the bubble of air gave way and suddenly water filled his mouth and nose. He struggled, releasing his grip on the pumpkin as it bobbed back up to the surface. It should have been easy to undo the vine, he tugged. Up on the land the knot would just release, but for some reason it wouldn't down here. As he tugged it got tighter, he clawed at it but he was already getting weaker starting to go limp by the time Paintedcanyon managed to free him and get him to the surface he had stopped breathing

Paintedcanyon dragged Desertpaw's limp body onto the riverbank, gently laying him down. The drenched tom got to work quickly. He carefully parted the apprentice's mouth just a bit before he began massaging and putting pressure on his chest. He gently, but firmly, pressed down rhythmically on it in an attempt to get him breathing again. "Come on, Desertpaw..." He growled as he continued to press down on his chest

Desertpaw laid limp for a few moments, but when the pressure was applied to chest he began to cough and sputter up water, sitting up right blinking his eyes until the blurriness began to fade. Suddenly he spun around, looking at the vine still tied around him "I tied the wrong knot... Whoops"
