Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Flamingstar walked with elegance toward the Dayclan border. She hadnt purposely gone there, that's just where her paws led her. She reached the border and took a seat, staring out into the flat lands of Dayclan territory. She let her mind wonder until suddenly, she heard paw steps. She froze, the fur along her spine beginning to rise. Dayclan cats weren't usually out this late so who could be nearby? "Whose there?" She called into the darkness, expecting something or someone to jump out. Perhaps her daughter Creampuff was pranking her and she was about to jump out at any moment to scare her.
"You come up to the DayClan border and ask who's there," Burningsummer meowed, as she emerged from the thick golden grasses nearby, her ginger coat darker in the night.
"I imagine that really ought to be my line," Burningsummer mused, then a chuckle drew from her throat. "But if you'd come here for something I doubt you'd be jumping at shadows. Not that I blame you, walking along DayClan's borders. Especially since our neighbors are growing quite unstable." She said glancing towards MoonClan and then the more distant SunClan.
Flamingstar's fur began to bristle but not out of anger, out of surprise. She had not expected to come face to face with one of the previous leaders of Nightclan. Not to mention it had to be the one she tricked into letting her stay in Nightclan only to attempt to steal the throne before Soaringbird beat her to it and she had to rid of Soaringbird to take what she wanted. Now, Burningsummer was standing before her, engaging in a casual conversation. The dark ginger Nightclan leader was unsure of what her next move should be. Should she walk away? Should she attack? Should she bring up the past or continue the casual conversation? Was Burningsummer going to being up the past? Would she attack? Would she want her clan back?
Flamingstar followed Burningsummer's gaze toward the Moonclan border and then to the Sunclan border. "Is that why you left?" She asked, forcing herself to remain calm in the presence of the previous Nightclan leader. Clearly Burningsummer had left Sunclan or she wouldn't be this far into Dayclan territory. Sunclan and Dayclan always had loose borders between each other but now that Bloodystar was leader, Sunclan was like a volcano ready to erupt. She wouldn't blame any cat trying to escape that mess.
Burningsummer let out a humorous chuckle. "I didn't so much as leave as I couldn't stay there. Following a cat like Bloodyrondo..." She scoffed, "Throwing his support behind a god so clearly proven wrong to the point he'd turn against his leader."
Her whiskers twitched. "There are reasons to take matters into your own paws... and that was not it. I fear for Littlestar, whatever happened was ill deserved," Her amber eyes narrowed, "And Bloodyrondo will pay in blood for all he's twisted..." Her expression darkened lips pulled back into a snarl at the thought of Dancingpaw following that cat eagerly. "And all the hurt he's caused. And will continue to cause."
Flamingstar's whiskers twitched in amusement and a slight chuckle escaped her jaws. "Hm, so much anger." She took in a breath. "Frankly, I think Littlestar deserved it. She stole my medicine cat and turned him against me. You can't tell me Littlestar was a saint. I know she has been shady, you can't fool me." Her gaze shifted back to the Sunclan border. "However, I can't say Bloodyrondo is any better. I might even agree with you that he is worse. Someone needs to take down Sunclan, hm?" She raised a brow, looking back at Burningsummer. "A cat like Bloodrondo won't stop at Sunclan. No...he will continue to expand until he gets as much of the forest as he wants, starting with the weaker clans. But, a little birdy told me Sunclan has a shortage of food. Perhaps now would be the time to strike before they get desperate for food. Hunger will drive a cat to madness." She examined her claws. "If only someone were brave enough to go against him. Or...rather strong enough."
Burningsummer arched an eyebrow. "'Brave', hmm?" She mused. "One must not be quick to forget that such acts of bravery won't be paid with only their blood." She said mildly. "A leader needs to temper such bravery with a healthy dose of reality."
Her voice became more serious. "Even with the mass exodus SunClan experienced following Bloodyrondo's hostile takeover, they still have a large amount of warriors. It would take not just the bravery of one cat, but an agreement of several to truly bring forth a force to bring him down. To make his forces realize that his enemies are scarier than he is and stand down."
"Though such a thing wouldn't take just bravery, but a healthy dose of cooperation. Which can be a bit more of a bitter pill to swallow for some," Burningsummer meowed, wrapping her tail around her paws.
Flamingstar rubbed her chin in thought as Burningsummer spoke but then simply shrugged. "Well, what do I know, hm? Perhaps someone will stand up and unite the other three clans. Uniting with another clan to take down a common enemy isn't really Nightclan's thing." She waved her paw in the air. "We are more of a...take over a clan and force them to fight. We don't do friendship." She stuck out her tongue in disgust at the mention of friendship. "It may have been so when you were leader but as Nightclan's new leader, I have closed the borders and retreated from all previous alliances. Nightclan look out for themselves. Asking for help is weakness. So, maybe, just maybe, someone will come forward."
Burningsummer looked at Flamingstar and let out a long long sigh. "Take it from someone who's taken over clans before. It doesn't always go well. Especially since you're more likely to do something you regret." She warned.
"NightClan was never a clan to take over one and force them to fight, perhaps you have convinced them to think to do so once again. But it won't end well for you." The she cat continued. "There are certainly targets to your size, or perhaps you'll do what I did."
A bitter smile twisted on Burningsummer's features. "Make seemingly an alliance with cats you know to be strong, cats that like you don't do friendship. That operate in vengeance, in your view of strength. What happens when that alliance dissolves and suddenly you've opened yourself up to someone who outplayed you?"
Burningsummer's expression became serious. "You're leader of a clan Flamingstar." She said emphasizing the leadership suffix of the she cat's name. "I pray there won't come a time when your stubborn pride endangers your clanmates, because you refuse to ask for help."
"In a true crisis, your pride in standing alone will be cold comfort when disaster strikes and takes everything from you."
"What you have said doesn't make sense. You tell me I should ask for help but then say that when an alliance dissolves, I've opened myself up to someone who outplayed me. If I keep my borders closed and don't ask for help, my clan is safe. I won't have to worry about trusting the wrong cats. You trusted the wrong cats. You trusted me and you trusted Littlestar and look where you are now. You lost Nightclan, living in Dayclan, running from a tyrant in Sunclan, and watching your family be divided." She narrowed her cold, turquoise eyes. "Im leader of a powerful clan, not a single clan nor cat has attempted to take Nightclan from me, and I did what was best for my family all because I never let my guard down. I never trusted anyone and never asked for help. I built Nightclan into the clan that it is today. We are no longer controlled by an alliance, I don't have to answer to Foxstar or Glowstar, and I have a clan that is strong and resources that are plentiful. Nightclan may be different now but you must be proud that they no longer take crap from anyone and stand their own ground."
Silence fell in response to the words, and then Burningsummer barked out a laugh
"I'm impressed, have you been following my life and movements that closely?" The she cat said. "And yet you still managed to take all the wrong lessons." She shook her head.
"I know exactly who you'd make an alliance with because you seem intent on following a similar path as the leader before me. Shiverstar wanted to make NightClan an island, and her regime ended with us staring down being the minions of Vera E'tani. Fortunately, I took over and managed to side step that." Burningsummer said curling her lip in memory.
"And don't tell me you've built this clan, NightClan was built on all the cats who came before it. Generations of cats who came together, unless you're telling me you kicked everyone out and started fresh, you built nothing." Burningsummer said flatly. "Still living in the camp established under me. I imagine given that cluster of cats I see around you at gatherings, you're still using a similar guard system as Shiverstar did even before me. Still trying to make NightClan back into an island like Shiverstar. Leaders guide the stream, you try to build too much and you'll dam up the whole thing."
"And if we're discussing mistakes... why not talk about your and Kotori's gambit to destroy everything, hmm?" Burningsummer tilted her head. "Think I'd forgotten about the Shadow Era? I'm no idiot Flamingstar, they'd need a leader, and you, freshly minted, and with something to prove, decided you wanted your big mark to be destroying everything. But then you were foiled, and now you're here."
Burningsummer's expression softened. "Now you're here telling me how strong you are. Telling me you don't need anyone, that NightClan's so strong under you. IF that were the case, you wouldn't be sitting here telling me that. What exactly do you want Flamingstar?" She asked straightening up and looking at her. "Tell me does all this power warm your days? Comfort you as you look around watching your back to make sure no one within or outsider your clan is looking to overturn you? Ease the silence of being alone, though I suppose your pet owl does help with that."
Flamingstar began to bristle, furious at Burningsummer's ignorance. "You don't know a thing about Nightclan anymore nor me. You have no idea what I have put into that clan to make it what it is now. You made it soft and weak. You let the pride alliance clans walk all over you and Nightclan, bending over backwards for those sun loving freaks. I still don't know what was going through your mind, getting that close with Foxstar and Glowstar. They cannot be trusted. A blind cat could see that! Luckily, I came through and saved it. There was no doubt if you had stayed leader or even Soaringbird, Nightclan would have fallen. I made Nightclan great and fierce. We turn heads when we walk into the gatherings. So what if I have to constantly look over my shoulder? Any great leader would be a threat to the other clans and it isnt my fault if they think my clan is doing well because Im their leader." She puffed out her chest, getting overly proud. "And yeah, I lost with the Shadow Era cats but I gained reputation. A leader can't win every battle but I promise you, Nightclan will rise up and we will be even stronger than all the forest clans combined. These things just take time "
“They don’t think you’re strong, they think you’re a bunch of wannabes,” Burningsummer said flatly. “It’s very easy to be a fox heart Flamingstar. But, you’re no Foxstar or Vera E’tani, and yet that’s all I see you trying to be. When in reality you’re a very pale shadow of Shiverstar.”
"Say what you will, Burningsummer. We are going to show everyone who ever doubted us the strength we have. Personally, I think Nightclan is thriving quite well. We have had more litters and newcomers. Our clan is growing and soon, our strength will not only come from our intense training but also in numbers and one day, I will be legendary." Flamingstar sneered, flattening her ears against her head. She had enough of Burningsummer thinking she knew everything. "Besides, what good is any leader without the mistakes they make along the way? Let me make my own mistakes. Why should you even care?"
"Because, I care about NightClan. Just because I may have left I haven't stopped caring about my former clanmates. They're all important to me. But the way you speak of 'litters and newcomers' tells me you see them as just more numbers to grow your power. They're your clanmates, and not only do you hurt them by seeing them as simply the path to your power, you hurt yourself." Burningsummer meowed.
"After all, you claim Turbulentsea was stolen from you. But he protected me during your Shadow Era." Burningsummer said softly. "Are you so blind to not realize that if you keep your heart frozen and cold, you're encouraging the same from those around you? Don't you want that kind of loyalty? Loyalty drawn from a lifetime of supporting and loving your clanmates. In bonds forged through friendship."
"I have loyalty" she responded, narrowing her eyes. "Putting a wall up keeps me and my subjects safe. That's what they see in me...protection. That is why they give me their loyalty because I can keep them safe. Something you couldn't do. You put them in danger by putting your trust in cats that were known to betray and double cross."
"Really," Burningsummer said leaning back. "Not what I've heard." She said. "I gave them alliances that allowed us to grow and improve, and while you claim you've built a wall. Rumor has it you've been trading with the Regime. That's quite a porous wall you have there Flamingstar."
"And you talk about me making friends, I at least didn't take a mate with the one who murdered most of his family in cold blood."
Flamingstar's ear twitched in annoyance. "Renegade Regime is strictly business. That is all anyone would ever be. Like I said, I don't make friends and I don't do alliances. I could raid in on the Regime any time I want and they could do the same. There is no agreement that we can't kill each other. Only that I supply them with what they need to make my armors." She wanted to say that she was basically using the Regime but she couldn't trust Burningsummer. The last thing she needed was for Burningsummer to run over to Renegade Regime and tell them that Flamingstar was just using them and have a whole ruthless revolutionary group raiding their camp. Not to mention the useful items they would lose from the Regime.
Flamingstar then scoffed at Burningsummer's next comment, "What can I say? I like them bad. But Kotori wouldn't hurt me. I'd kill him before he even got the opportunity. Besides, he loves me. And, I don't really blame him. I mean, have you met his family?"
