Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. “Opalpaw… we have some news” Thistlestar spoke, his usual stern expression was soft and exhausted behind fresh wounds. Opalpaw stared up at the leader in a moment of confusion, taking note as the other apprentice who had joined him in the exchange left his side to return to the comforts of the apprentice den. As much as he wanted to follow them and embrace his mother again, the quiet urgency in his leader’s tone forced him to stay behind and listen. As Thistlestar began to speak, he noticed other cats approach the clearing in his direction; his father and mentor. His ears twitch as the unforgettable words hit the air around him. And just like that his world went numb. The rest of the words were lost to the older apprentice as Thistlestar continued to explain. It seemed as though his own father was speaking but at that point, the apprentice lost the ability to hear anything. The world around him faded and nothing made sense… except to run…

Opalpaw sat at the edge of river, his amber eyes dull and empty as he let the sounds of rushing water fill his mind in hope of pushing past the news. It had been some time since he left the camp, how long, he wasn’t even sure himself. Nothing made sense anymore, not the babbling noises the river made, not the way his heart raced heavily in his chest and not the way the idea of his mother being dead played in his mind logically. He had yet to shed a tear since the minute Thistlestar broke the news. He hadn’t found the acceptance of the news to begin with, so it didn’t make sense to cry. But his leader would have no reason to lie. This wasn’t a game even a kit would play.
Viperstream felt it was necessary that he followed his apprentice into the woods. Assuring Opalpaw's father he would return with his son, he went after him. Besides, if something were to have happened to him, he would would have felt personally responsible. Although, he hadn't truly felt loss before, at least in recent memory, he could understand how the apprentice felt in the moment. It was a lot for a cat to experience at a young age and so suddenly at that. Stepping out toward the river, he sat next to his apprentice and stared at the water's edge. "I am sorry for your loss."
