( Moonheart & Duskbriar, first meeting. Private thread. )
She'd gone quite some time now, without having eaten a proper meal. There had been the mouse, but it'd been much too scrawny. And, it had been two days ago. Her stomach made noises of protest. She made a noncommittal sound and was almost ready to give up and lay down right there, refusing to move another inch. Would she still go to StarClan, if she was a Loner? The thought terrified her. She didn't want to know the answer.
And then, as if a sudden beacon of hope, she could see a small light through the haze of her thoughts. Closing her eyes, she pushed onward and could smell the musty smell of hay. Other animal smells mixed in here and there too. They were too confusing to make out, but what mattered most was food. Were there was a farm, there was a barn. And where there was a barn... Her stomach growled loudly with excitement. Duskbriar walked with a new bounce in her step, making sure to slink along the shadows in case of any dangerous threats. She was lean and tall, but skinny enough due to lack of food to blend pretty well with the shadow.
What she didn't expect was running into anyone. Her mind must have tunnel visioned, because she didn't even consider the slight possibility of other cats living here.

A small and silent patter of feet sounded off from the west side of the farm she called home, collar bouncing across her thin neck. Moon's small group of 5 had left a day prior in hopes of getting food from twolegs. She had previously eaten kibble, and to her disappointment, hated it. Luckily enough the farm was overrun with field mice and rabbits that were determined to pick off food from the gardens. Moon considered it an infinite food source, and was surprised that the other kittypets had chosen the dry food over meat. Her head raised high and a small mouse dangled limp in her jaws. She was usually quite aware of new scents that drifted into her territory, but due to the overwhelming smell of the prey that she held, everything else seemed washed out.
The extremely tiny she-cat wiggled her haunches and leapt up onto the rusted and mangled wooden fence. She effortlessly followed it into the barn, launching herself up from the rope to a platform a foot above the ground. She lowered her muzzle and planted the mouse down in front of her, bushy tail flopping over the edge as she began eating with small bites. It was dark in the barn. The sun was barely rising above the hills, the sky flushed with pastels of orange and pink in sunrise. Moon's collar jingled and her green optic eyes scanned the outside area once she finished, sitting up and prodding her paws against the splinter-filled wood.
Her "family", or so they called themselves, had told her they'd be gone for a moon. Due to this knowledge she didn't expect to find anyone here; apart from the horses that roamed on the hillside daily and the pigs that lived in the trough a few yards over.
Duskbriar pressed on, not even questioning why luck seemed to turn in her favor. She found a small bundle of sharp smelling herds... or, maybe food? She didn't eat the stuff. But it seemed that the mice did. Energy surged through her paws. She saw a small brown creature nibbling on one of the herbs. Crouching low, she thanked her now skinny appearance for offering more ease of staying out of sight. She crept forward as careful as she could, her Warriors training kicking in. It was easy from there. She dispatched her catch easily, grabbing it hungrily in her jaws. But she didn't stop there.
The creamy brown she-cat glanced at the setting sun, and felt another surge of excitement. The barn. The rays bounced off of the roof, washing the comfy looking farm in gold, orange, and inviting looking shadows. Filled with a new warmth, she beelined it towards the Barn, slinking through the shadows and easily finding areas to duck and hide in. Pale eyes flitted around the yard, dull with the hardships of being a Loner. A comfy meal, and place to sleep for the night didn't sound bad.
Finally, she pushed into the barn through a loose gap at the back. Hay was blocking the way, but it didn't take her long to quietly shuffle the strongly smelling stuff out of her way. She wrinkled her nose. She didn't understand what drew mice to this stuff, but she wouldn't question it either. Wriggling through the gap, she clambered through and all but collapsed against the floor, ravenously tearing into her meal without even an afterthought of; there may be another cat here.

A noise.
Her fur fluffed up and lost its slickness, claws unsheathing instinctively. She was careful not to make any noise, placing her paws on the wood in places it didn't creak, peering down from the shadows. At first she saw nothing; just the usual dirt and hay that was scattered messily across the ground. As she made her way towards the entrance of the barn though, she could make out the dark silhouette of a cat against the bright sky. Moon's eyes shifted into slits and her tail fluffed up larger than her own body. She hesitated to do anything. For one thing, she was twice as small as this feline in front of her. And the huge jaws that cat seemed to have? It made her spine arch. Finally the kittypet cleared her throat and sat up as tall as she could.
"Who invited you in?" She spat, eyes narrowed as she locked her gaze on the other. She was further away and higher up than the loner, so she seemed big and intimidating, but if only they knew. That was the only advantage she had right now. Moon finally realized that her jaws were still covered in the blood of her breakfast, quickly licking it off and grooming her paw against her ears, eyes never leaving the cat.

She nearly choked on her mouse when the sudden voice interrupted her meal. Suddenly, Duskbriar looked all around, her eyes bright and wild. She definitely had the look of a trapped animal down, with her ruffled fur and haunted features. The she-cat found her only option of not being attacked was to look as big as she could muster. Locking finally on the voice, she saw a fluffy she-cat gazing down at her. Duskbriar licked the remnants of the mouse she scarfed down away before standing to her full height.
She hoped she looked at least a bit intimidating. Despite her scrawny features, she still held the muscular outline of a trained fighter; she'd been best at that. Ears flicked back as she studied the cat a moment longer before clearing her throat. "I-I'm," she stuttered out the first word, which was annoying. And then, tried again with her best diplomatic voice. "I'm not here to intrude; I didn't realize someone was living here."

Moon blinked, eyes narrowing further, trying to seem bigger by puffing out her pelt. "Well it's quite rude to steal prey! You should always check first." She rolled her eyes and turned away, paws brushing at her pelt to flatten it back down before turning back. It took her another moment to realize how skinny the other was, letting out a quiet gasp to herself before leaping down onto the ground.
"Goodness, what happened to you?" She asked with slight attitude, not completely understanding the idea of loners. She had been taught to think that all cats had access to food and shelter. The small cat sniffed the air in her direction and recoiled her muzzle. "And where have you been? It smells like a pigsty!" She cautiously crept closer and sat down a tail-length away from Duskbriar, the crescent trinket on her collar jingling as her haunches touched the ground. Though never excusing the feeling of caution and disgust, she tried to tolerate it. "Um... do you need.. help, or something?"
Her teeth gritted and her ears lowered, examining the molly's posture and frightened face. "Hhmph. It's fine, I don't bite or anything. I'm not wild." The petite she-cat got up once more and scurried to the back of the barn, vanishing for a moment in a stack of hay. She emerged a second later with a small rabbit in her jaws, the body having being limp and lifeless for some time. "Uh.. if you're hungry still." Her body repulsed and then jumped forward, tossing the prey in front of Duskbriar before going back to her original perch.
It was a whirlwind of words being thrown at her, things happening so fast she didn't have much time to truly process or answer. Not that she minded; the less she talked, the less the other knew about her. Although, she seemed to be a Kittypet. So it wouldn't really matter even if she did find out, right? Duksbriar fought back the urge to turn tail and flee. If the other wasn't a threat, maybe she could hunker down for the night. And the rabbit nearly made her stomach give another revolt of absolute hunger, almost drooling at the sight of more food. The mouse would have sufficed; but she was definitely starving. Quickly, she tore into the rabbit as well, scarfing it down within moments. Her stomach finally felt content and full.
She could feel the lull of sleep tugging at her, but she fought it off due to the presence of the other feline. She glanced up, studying her a moment before giving an amused twitch of her whiskers. Wild. That's what Clan cats and others besides Kittypet's were considered. "Thank you," she said, despite the previous scare. She truly meant her words. "I might've starved if I hadn't of eaten. I guess I was so set on finding food, I didn't think about if someone might live here."
Having explained herself, she sat down gently and began to paw at the ground. Whether it be the newfound energy, or nerves, she didn't entirely know. "Is this your home?"

Moon watched with wide eyes as the she-cat tore through the rabbit, stomach churning with slight fear which she swallowed. Instead of saying 'you're welcome' she simply huffed and turned her head away for a moment, glancing out to the sun that was now covered by the rolling hills surrounding the farm. The question made Moon focus back on her, hesitant to answer with her whiskers twitching. "Err... yes. I share it with others but they aren't here often." Her gaze loosely swung around the barn, not sure whether to look at the stranger or at her paws. Finally easing her nerves, sensing that this cat wasn't a threat, her head turned back towards them, revealing the dark purple collar around her neck. It was littered with stars, and dangling from it was a trinket that looked like a crescent. Curved along the shape, the metal was engraved with the name "Moon".
"Where do you come from?... Are you from the twolegplace?" The small cat asked with genuine curiosity. She had never seen someone that looked like her, let alone as big. She was practically half their height. "What's your name?"
As the sky darkened to a blue galaxy she twitched the tip of her tail, getting up with a stretch that made her yawn. "There's a stack of hay in the back where I sleep. ... I can show you if you're tired." She had to admit, sleeping on wood wasn't her favorite thing in the entire world. And giving up her bed for a stranger was the nicest thing she had ever done. She surprised herself, and thinking this was the best deed ever, smirked silently.

She'd had a good look at the pale colored she-cat as she was answering, and found with a shock that she was alarmingly small. Not that it was anything new to Duskbriar; she had always been very tall. But this Kittypet was definitely smaller than most. She didn't question it, though. She knew more than anyone what it was like to be criticized based on size, rather than ability.
As she indicated to the hay pile, Duskbriar made a fleeting glance outside. She could run for it; though the warmth of the Barn made her hesitate. And with a small nod, she began to wearily pad towards the inviting looking bed. "No," she answered her question about her whereabouts. "I'm... a forest cat," she decided to glean. No use telling her about the Clans, it'd probably be too confusing. Besides, she was still hesitant about sharing. Most cats knew about the Clans.
She studied the other for a moment, before offering a tired smile. "I apologize, I didn't introduce myself, and your being very kind to me. My names Duskbriar."

She followed slowly, taking note of the loner's glance outside and hesitance. She knew what it meant; and honestly didn't blame her for it. The small cat blinked, slightly annoyed, as she waited for an answer, and wasn't expecting the one she received. "N-no? So you're a wild cat?" Though she tried her best to refrain, she couldn't help but let her tone be a little judgy. "No wonder you're so thin. You should become a kittypet, it's so much easier." Yeah, she was pretty dumb and pushy. She was never taught anything though, so who could blame her for being so curious?
Moon leapt up the pile of hay and flexed her paws out. "So are you from a... um... cla- cl-" She fumbled with her words for a moment before remembering the right term. "-Clan?" Proud of herself for remembering she curled up on a shelf above the haystack, glancing down to her with a rhythmic thumping of her tail.
"Duskbriar... Duskbriar... okay." The way she learned something was repeating it over and over again to implement it into her brain. "Well if you haven't already seen it, my name is Moon." She joked and let out a small smile, rolling her eyes and resting her muzzle in her paws while glancing outside. She had never before been this calm or friendly to a stranger, or anyone, in that matter.

She would have probably smiled, if not for the constant rolling nervousness in her stomach. So she did know of the Clans? Pushing the slight tingle of fear back, she nodded in greeting, "Moon. It's nice to meet you." And then, she offered an answer to the offer she'd considered only once, but turned away from. "I wouldn't make a good Kittypet. I get restless. I love laying under the stars, and hunting for myself. I wouldn't be content with being taken care of."
The sentence probably seemed a bit stiff and formal; but Duskbriar wasn't too grate at seeming comfortable with others. With a small sigh, she easily leapt atop a hay bale near the she-cat, though at a distance where she could sleep peacefully. It felt prickly and unfamiliar against her paws, and made her pelt twitch as strands of the yellow plant poked into her fur. Considering her reply, she finally said, "I was, at some point. I left, though. Sometimes, a family can be cruel."
She didn't mean to indulge the information, but there wasn't any threat in Moon knowing some bits of her past. The hurt and bitterness was still fresh in her mind, and in her voice. She let her muzzle fall atop her tail, eyes half lidded with a twisted longing for something she'd left behind long ago. "I'm alone now, for the most part. I come across Rouges, or Kittypets, if I get close enough to Twolegs. Usually, I'm driven out of my home by Rouges. So you could say I wander a lot."

"You can say that again," she huffed, referring to her statement about family. Her eyes finally grew droopy and she rolled onto her back, paws fumbling around in the stuffy air.
She lay silent for a moment; pondering. Her mind twisted rapidly with the words Duskbriar spoke, tail twitching eagerly. She had always considered kittypet life boring. Uneventful, repetitive, easy. It didn't fit her style. She knew there was something better out there, especially now that this loner had informed her about one. "I guess you're right." Her voice was full of an unknown longing, an emotion she couldn't control. Her collar scratched at her neck uncomfortably, causing Moon to groan and attempt to scratch it off like she always tried.
"..Anyways, there's usually a lot of crows and voles here in the mornings. Help yourself."
She let out one last sigh before curling up and rolling over back to her stomach, sadness flowing through her. It was common for her to be droopy, not much she looked forward to anyways.
"I'm not expecting you to still be here. No one ever really does, anyhow. They all say it's too crowded and stuffy in here. I agree... everywhere else is so cold, especially at night.." At this point she was just rambling, sides heaving up and down slowly until her voice transitioned into a purr.

She hummed in agreement, watching as she rolled over and cutting off the conversation for the night. Duskbriar waited a moment, before turning her pale gaze to the rafters above. The air smelled dusty, and had that stale herb smell. But it was also somewhat cozy in here. Better than any place she'd ever lived. "Thank you," she murmured again.
She thought over the words of Moon, letting them turn over and over in her head. Her gaze flitted to an open window up at the ceiling, letting a hint of stars peek through. Duskbriar wondered if she truly would find any comfort staying here. But according to Moon, she was living with others. And she didn't know if she could handle more than two or three cats at the moment. It truly terrified her. She didn't want to let her trust be betrayed again. But the longing for some companionship, and dependability in her life began to well up.
Closing her eyes, she let her breathing relax before her thoughts began to feel hazy. Sleep took her, and she was for once comfortable, and warm.

The sun rose slowly over the hills that shielded the farm, a cold breeze seeping into the barn from the open doors. Moon lay silently while her sides heaved with sleep. A moment later her breathing slowed and her eyes slowly blinked open, dramatically stretching out and yawning with a small mew escaping her. The small kittypet almost leapt down onto Duskbriar, and for a moment her fur bristled, forgetting about the night before. Soon her fur went back to its normal shape, landing a few feet away from the haybales and onto the dusty ground.
Her stomach quietly growled and her nose twitched as she examined the morning outside, groaning with annoyance when a crow chirped and scared off a vole that was in her sight. She quickly snuck outside, effortlessly leaping up onto a role fence, standing on her toes to sniff around. Finally the scents overwhelmed her. Over north, a group of crows bathed in a puddle with their backs turned on the kittypet. She crept closer, thankful for her size, before leaping onto one. Wrestling for a moment, and even lifting off the ground, she finally managed to land a killing blow on the bird's neck and fell down in a huff.
She sat for a moment, contemplating how to get it back to the barn, and finally decided she could only drag it. It was about her own size, maybe even larger. Moon tugged with all her might, eyes squinting and her meows turning into growls. After what seemed like forever she made it back and sat triumphantly with her kill, taking small bites to savor the moment.

Duskbriar was slow to rise, stirring only because of the birdsong lilting from outside. She blinked against the stabbing morning light, wondering how long she'd slept. She knew it had probably been a while, because she could smell a fresh-kill below her. Rising quietly and creeping forward to peer over the haybale, she spotted Moon eating a crow.
Her own stomach gave a small protesting growl, and she crept back, sitting upright now to inspect her messy fur. StarClan, no wonder Moon had been aghast by her appearance. Burrs and twigs stuck out at odd angles here and there. Her fur was tufted, and mud caked her paws. She could only imagine how gaunt she looked, as well. Sighing, Duskbriar went to work on her pelt, pulling at the debris so she didn't look so much like a ruffian. When she'd groomed her fur to its usual, glossy sheen, she finally rose and leapt down.
Dust puffed from where she landed, and she stretched out her stiff limbs. Surveying Moon quietly with a look of curiosity, she gave a small nod in greeting. "If you don't mind, I can go and hunt for a meal..." she trailed off, not wanting to overstay her welcome. It wasn't her home. Her tail began to slowly weave back and forth, a habit to distract her from how awkward she probably was. "I don't want to impose on your hospitality, especially if others live here."

Hearing the fall of feet she turned her head slowly while chewing, giving a perky smile and a nod of her head in greeting. "You look.. better." Moon examined Duskbriar's fur with admiration, a much different feeling than when she saw her last night. She took another bite and hung her head low to sniff at the crow she had caught. "Sure," she agreed, mouth full of food. She took time to chew completely before turning back around to meet the other's gaze.
"It's okay. If anything, kind of nice to have someone here for the time being. When everyone else is here, they barely acknowledge each other. It's like no one exists to one another." Her voice was low and grumbly due to just waking up, coughing to clear her throat before taking a final bite.
If she was being honest, Moon wouldn't be surprised if Duskbriar left to go hunt and never returned. She had such a dislikeable personality that not many people can tolerate her anymore, so someone that does for even a little bit does help. "Er... If you need help just call out. Not like I'd be of much assistance anyways." She mumbled the last line to herself, curling her tail around her paws and glancing up to a broken window that had light and vines leaking through.

She listened, her ears swiveling in surprise. A group of cats, and they hardly interacted? That was odd. She could almost feel empathetic with the she-cat. She maybe not have been in a small group of cats, but she had been mostly ignored in her Clan life. It surprised her mostly. Though she didn't answer, she merely dipped her head in polite acknowledgement before slipping outside. The fresh air made her inhale sharply, and exhale with a grin. This was her element.
She bounded towards the border of the farm, and was almost tempted to slip away and never come back. But the temptation of a place to sleep made her slow to a stop. Sighing, she began sniffing at the underbrush, picking up stale scent here and there. And then, she spotted a plump looking rabbit. Licking her lips, she crouched low. It wasn't hard to sneak up on the prey; they were hardly used to being hunted anyways.
She padded back to the barn reluctantly, the prize easily carried in her maw. But she was curious, at least. And company was something she'd yearned for, for a while now. Duskbriar quietly stepped back into the cozy atmosphere, dropping her catch a little bit away from Moon and sitting down.
She regarded her with a sharp, inquisitive gaze, before settling in and taking a bite of her meal. "So, do they disappear a lot, then?" she knew it probably sounded nosy, and like she was prodding for intel, but she was more or less curious. A part of her wondered how long she could get away with staying here, until she was forced to move again.

She watched her go before leaping up the numerous shelves that lined the barn, tail hooked high above her for balance. Finally she reached the last one and positioned herself towards the wall below. With a large leap her paws landed uneasily on the windowsill, leaning forward out the window to avoid falling backwards. Moon sat there, still, eyes glued onto the horses in the faraway hills. They looked so carefree, so calm. They grazed on the grass and soon began migrating away, the molly watching for a moment more with a subtle sigh.
When Moon heard Duskbriar return she quickly turned and fell to the ground, landing on her paws neatly while walking towards her. "Ugh, why do I have to be smaller than prey sometimes?" She jokingly groaned and sat down again, and for the first time a genuine and tiny smile spread across her face.
"Yeah, sometimes. It's usually to go back to the twolegplace or to explore around." She thought for a moment before finishing her words. "I never go with them though. Those furballs annoy me and I don't like twolegs." The kittypet glanced down to her collar and attempted to pull at it again, grumbling a few words to herself before clearing her throat once more.

She actually laughed, her eyes glimmering with amusement. Duskbriar surveyed Moon as she scratches at the uncomfortable looking trinket. A mark, claiming that you belonged to the Twolegs. Ather question, though, the smile was replaced with a disgusted wrinkle of her nose. "I've never even dreamed of it. It smells old and stale. I don't even think that stuff would digest in my stomach."
She chewed her rabbit again, as if to wash away the kittypet food she hadn't even eaten. There was something rewarding about catching your own food. Using you own skill to feed yourself. Duskbriar focused on Moon, her gaze even more curious. "If you hate it so much, why do you stay?"

When Duskbriar laughed it make her do the same, glancing down to her feet as her tail curled back around them.
"I had to eat it for an entire moon, two times a day. It was horrible. It made me want to barf," she huffed, nose wrinkling at the memories of the smell and texture. Her eyes lit up as she looked back to the loner, smile soon vanishing at her question. She had never thought about it that way before. Her head raised to glance out the doors, eyes droopy.
Why not just leave? Her heart sunk in her chest, paws shuffling below her weight. She had always wanted to run away; be free out in the wild, be with others like her, eat things other than mice everyday. Her father had always told her that she would never survive out in the forest, and that was what held her back. If she left, it would have to be someone that could help her.
"..I don't know." She followed this with a long sigh, flexing her claws against the ground. Soon she returned to her usual snooty self, sitting upright with a glance to the almost-devoured rabbit. "Will you be staying?" Her voice was perky, full of curiosity.
