The night sky was thick with stars overhead, most of Dirtykit's siblings were asleep, but as a part of the nightly routine she always had to be the last to sleep. Wintrystar was clear about Dirtykit rolling in dirt and slush everyday to hide her gorgeous pelt. Otherwise it would be too hard for WinterClan to believe a demon could look as pretty as her. Yet every night her mother insisted on cleaning her pelt. No matter how bad the tastes were or how thick the grime was her mother would always have her looking good as new by the time the stars were out.
"There," Dottymask purred, looking a bit tired, but happy with her work, "Doesn't your fur feel a bit lighter now love?"
Love was what she opted to call her kits most days. Words of endearment rather than by their real names. This was largely out of shame, they were her first litter, but it was clear their names made her feel embarrassed to ever introduce them to her friends. Nonetheless she always put 100% into them the best way she could.

As her mother's tongue gently rasped at her pelt, Dirtykit struggle to fight off the sleep that was tugging heavily upon her eyelids. She was always afraid that if she fell asleep before Dottymask was finished with cleaning her pelt that she would get angry. It should have made her happy to have all the dirt and grime washed away, but she had grown so accustomed to being caked in filth that without it she felt strange and vulnerable. She had been told over and over again about how terrible she and her siblings were "Yes mother..." she murmurer sleepily, finally allowing herself to curl up into a ball, the constellation markings along her pelt shimmering brightly as the stars that watched over them from up above. They were beautiful, but also the reason for her torment and shame. A sure sign that she was a demon, just like the rest of WinterClan believed "but I just have to put it all back on my pelt in the morning before anyone sees me..." it wasn't and argument more of just a simple statement
"I know," Dottymask replied, "I just hate it. Some days I don't know what I'm doing, but I just try my best for you and your siblings. Everyone says how blessed all of you are to have me, but it doesn't mean anything if we don't succeed. I want you to someday grow up and having a beautiful warrior name, I want you to have a family, I want the world for you, but instead you're a demon, you're Dirtykit, and you're not equal to anyone here. But sometimes I just pretend that there's hope so... That's why I'm foolish and I clean up your fur every night... Maybe I should just give up though, you don't seem to like it and it's probably not good to hold onto stupid dreams like that."

"No, I like it... I'm just scared momma" her ears fell back, looking down at the ground shaking slightly "I just want to be like the other kits, but because of these markings on my face even If I ran away to another clan they would still know that I am a demon" she wanted to cry and wail about how unfair it was, but it wouldn't change anything. All it would acompish was making someone angry at her, and make her get punished "Sometimes I just want to cut them off... Maybe they would accept me if I had scars instead of these"
"Oh my sweet darling," Dottymask cooed, pulling her daughter close, "I know, you're such a good girl, your my thoughtful angel," She promised her. She had never called any of her kits angels, or darling, or sweet for that matter. But Dirtykit was her precious obedient little girl, she was always thoughtful, one of the only ones who showed true remorse for disobedience. She often found herself doubting that Dirtykit was a demon, the only reason she had to dirty her pelt every night was because she looked like she was created by the death goddess herself. Maybe it really was a sign that Dirtykit was different then the rest.
Holding her close she could feel her tiny shaking body against her chest, "I'm going to get you help, tomorrow," She promised, "We'll go see Snowbunny, he's closest to the deities, he can cure you as a demon, I'll make sure of it. You're too kind and thoughtful to be stuck like the rest of your bratty siblings. You can be different, we can find a way."

Dirtykit stared wide eyed at her mother "You mean it?" she whimpered, almost not believing the words that she was hearing as she cuddled close to her mothers chest still staring up at her "I don't want to be a demon momma, I'll do whatever you say. I promise!" she buried her nose into the long fur on Dottymask's chest "I just want to be your good girl" she murmured more quietly, the warmth of her mother's body and the exhaustion slowly sapping what was left of her energy as she began to drift off to sleep [Time skip?]
Snowbunny peered inside of Dirtykit's open mouth, inspecting her jaw before straightening up again, signaling that she could close her mouth, "Your daughters physique is entirely normal, which is a great, but I have to warn you that this is entirely experimental. According to legend her mother was given life from the Sun God and was corrupted in the womb by a dark forest cat. Both of the most heinous spiritual creatures in WinterClan lore. What I'm saying is that this will require an exorcism, they're painful and quite honestly their torture. "Are you really sure you're up for that?" He asked, turning to Dirtykit
"Of course I'm up for it, anything to save her," Dottymask said, completely ignoring the fact that he had asked her daughter, not her, "This is no way for her to live, no matter how much suffering she has to go through now, she'll be able to live a painless and bright future once this is all over. You will do whatever it takes, no matter how much she begs, cries, or suffers. Understood?"
"I-"
"Or I can tell Wintrystar that you're being soft on my litter again and we'll see what she does to you then," Dottymask threatened before kneeling down to her daughters level, "Alright now you be strong and do whatever Snowbunny needs. I think this will take a few days, but don't worry, you're going to come out of this with such a pretty name and you'll be able to have a family and become a real warrior. We can go hunting all the time together," She promised, giving her daughter a butterfly kiss before standing up straight.
Dirtykit closed her mouth after Snowbunny was done with his examination. The entire time that he looked her over, she seemed to be beaming with joy. She was so happy for this chance to become normal like the other cats in WinterClan, a chance to get this demon out of her and live like a normal cat. To have a name that wasn't so disgraceful, and more importantly to make her mother proud. When Snowbunny spoke, she had to admit that she was a little bit scared. She had never had an easy life, but what he was describing seemed really scary. She opened her mouth to ask him a question, but quickly shut it again as Dottymask spoke for her. Her doubts slowly fading away, if this is what mommy wanted her to do, then it was what she would do even if she was scared.
She gazed up at Dottymask "Yes mommy, I'll do what ever Snowbunny wants me to. I just don't want to be a demon anymore, I want you to be proud of me"
Snowbunny watched Dottymask leave like his soul was leaving with her. Why did he have to do everyone's dirty work!? He let out a huff before looking at Dirtykit anxiously. He had some ideas, but none were painless and worse none of them were guaranteed to work either. It wasn't a half bad idea though, if they could discover an exorcism even if it was a world of pain it would at least allow the litter to lead normal happy lives.
"The plan that comes to mind is to purify your blood, but that's risky, you could die if any part of my theory is off so let's start small," He said guiding Dirtykit out of his den and into WinterClan's cavern where a small hotsprings lied. With him he had brought a few tiny crystals.
Gently he laid Dirtykit onto her side, the rock beneath both their paws were hot, but luckily not scolding, just enough to hurt. Snowbunny withdrew a breath, rubbing his paws together with a special herb formula to prevent his front paws from burning. "I'm going to fuse these crystals to your ears. In theory this should suppress your demon side and since they're fused to your ear they'll be permanently blocked."
He hoped that she wouldn't squirm, he didn't want to have to tie her down and further her trauma, but if this did work it would be a better and more humane cure than any of the other things he could think of. He grabbed a scolding hot stone and placed it behind her ear and placed the crystal on the other side with another hot rock above the small crystal. The goal was to burn the crystal through the flesh of the ear and seal it in place.

Dirtykit followed after Snowbunny obediently keeping her gaze on the ground. She knew that this was going to hurt, but had no idea what sort of torture awaited her at his paws. She allowed herself to be laid upon the hot rock, her every instinct screaming for her move away from the source of her pain. Her flesh below the rock becoming pink and inflamed as it touched the stone, but it wasn’t blistering. It was only the sheer will power to get this demon out of her that she stayed still other than slight twitching, as she watched him gathering the materials he would need anxiously “Whatever it takes” she murmmered as he explained what he was going to, her heart beating faster and faster as her fear began to build
A shrill scream and the scent of burning flesh filled the air as the crystal made contact. Her limbs flailed, claws kneading the air as she squirmed automatically from the intense pain. But she kept her paws out of the way, tears streaming down her face as she tried to endure it “It hurts” she squealed over and over again, showing a lot of restraint for a car so young to not immediately push away his paws
Snowbunny's eyes teared up as he pressed harder with more force, he wanted this to go quicker. There was a preventative crystal that he made that could take away a persons senses completely. He had tested it on Bluejay, it was meant to be merciful, put her in a coma state. Instead there was one sense still alive, her mind and the effects lasted longer than he anticipated. It had just about left her insane, but even knowing this it killed him inside to know that he wasn't using it on Dirtykit. Any kind of relief would do.
"You did it," He said tearfully after a long twenty minutes. But that was just one crystal, there were nine more to go, "I have an idea to speed it up, I'll pierce your ear now so that will cut the time in half to maybe eight minutes. I don't think it's good for you to move though so I'm going to tie down your paws."
He tried to regain his composure, nothing would be worse if she saw how scared and horrified he was at the procedure and what he was doing. If he didn't do this he knew Dottymask would make up her own experimental therapy that was never going to work. At least here they were actually trying with real techniques that might work.
He grabbed some rough roots and began to wrap it around her paws firmly in figure eights before connected her front paws with her back paws as he continued the same pattern. This would at least prevent her from rolling and hopefully he made the roots thick enough around her paws to raise them off the hot stone to give her some relief, but at the same time the roots were tough and irritable, but that was the trade off.
He moved behind her, he didn't want her to see his terrified expression. He hated this, every moment of this, but using a hot stone he traced it over her ear, heating up her skin before gripping it and pressing his claws through to the end. They needed to be narrow and small given the tiny size of the crystals so he was careful to not press his entire claw through, but just the tips. Still his heart ached, he was clenching jaw so tightly he could hear it click with resistance.

Dirtykit collapsed as the pressure on her ear was released. Her limbs fell to her side trembling, her eyes squeezed shut and swollen from crying. Tears had created a wet crevice down her cheeks through her her thick mud covered pelt. Slowly she opened them as Snowbunny spoke and said that she had did it “I’m done? I’m not a demon any more?” She perked up slightly “Was I a good girl Snowbunny? I tried not to scream, I’m sorry” Her voice was raw and scratchy from the constant screams, but she had done her best to hold still and not reach her paws up to swat away at the source of her pain. But then Snowbunny kept speaking, as the reality that her torment wasn’t over yet began to sink in. Her eyes widened in fear, but she didn’t fight as he tightly bound her paws, only whimpered as the vine dug onto her already tender skin from the hot rock.
She wanted to plead and beg for him to stop, but she knew Dottymask would be angry. She told her to do whatever Snowbunny asked of her. She shuddered as Snowbunny moved behind her to continue on. The hot stone hurt, but as his claws ripped through her ear she jerked with a scream biting down on her tongue. Where the crystal melting into her ear had been slow and excruciating, this pain was sharp and intense. The taste of blood filling her mouth frightened her causing her to pull at her bonds as is it dug into her tender skin. Her words becoming a jumbled mess of syllables, until finally silence. Her eyes falling shut and limbs falling limp, as her mind faded into unconsciousness
As her consciousness slowly began to drift back to her she could make out the muffled voices around her, but her sight wouldn't have yet returned to her.
"Oh look at those pretty ears, you helped cure a demon!" Her mothers voiced cheered.
"I held her down and mutilated a kits ears..." Snowbunny whispered.
Dottymask's cheerful tone hardened, "You saved her."
"I burned her flesh even as she cried, even when she stopped moving," Snowbunny said, more tension in his voice this time as the guilt began to plague every part of his mind.
"Enough!" Dottymask hissed as she picked up her daughter by the scruff, but this time Dirtykit could feel the roots still wrapped tightly around her paws as her mother dragged her a short distance. She held onto her for a moment before dropping her, a gasp escaping her lungs, "She's not cured... She can't enter the symbol still. Snowbunny you have to-"
"I won't," Snowbunny's words came out stronger than any of his words ever had in his life. He sniffed as the emotions flooded back to him, "She just wanted the pain to stop-" His voice hitched, unable to finish his sentence.
"What needs to be done?" Another voice asked, this one sounding like the tom that had brought her into the prison all those moons ago to see their mother. However there was no response from Snowbunny, but what followed was all animalistic noises. She could hear a sharp whine from Snowbunny as paws scuffed against the floor, growls and hisses morphed together as more cries could be heard from Snowbunny, but sleep was pulling back at Dirtykit before she could hear how the fight ended.
When Dirtykit woke up she was lying on her stomach, her limbs were fanned out, held in place by stakes and the air was heavy with blood, her blood. The pain came back to her last, it roared in her ears and she could do more than just feel it, the wounds were so vicious she could taste her suffering in the air by how much gore she could smell. Not that she could see, but all along her back were various symbols carved into her fur, guessing which would be the one to release the demon inside of her.
"She's dying isn't she?" Dottymask asked, her voice clearer now, but there was fear in her voice.
"Yes," Howlingnight replied as he watched Dirtykit bleed out, "But this was my only idea, if she bleeds out all that demon blood then maybe the gods will accept and cure her. That's your only hope is to have faith that they'll save her."
Drifting between then waking world and sleep, the world around her was a confusing mess of pain, voices, and flashes of visions as her eyes would flutter open and then closed again. This time as her eyes opened, the stone walls around them spun around her even though she wasn’t moving. The pain of her ears and back, sharp pulling her out of the darkness back to reality. Her whimpers filled the silence, her limbs jerking futility against her bindings. One last desperate attempt of a dying cat, her body no longer lacking the strength to fight. She could hear Dottymask’s voice, and another saying that she was dying. Even though she couldn’t see her she called out pleading “Mommy...Mommy...” she cried, the stench of blood filling her nose and mouth “please mommy, I’m scared. I don’t want die, mommy please! It hurts so bad, mommy!” Her shrill cries filling the air “I promise I’ll be your good girl! I’ll mind my manners and do my chores! Please forgive me mommy, I just want to be with you” the longer she spoke the quieter her words were becoming softer“Mommy... I love you” as the last words left her she fell limp, blood still freely flowing out of her body and to the cold stone below
"I'm here darling," Dottymask said coming up to her sweet daughters face as she knelt down beside her. Her paws rubbing against her, but she could feel her daughters head weigh more and more in her paws. Her frantic gaze turned back to Howlingnight, "What if this doesn't work? Isn't there a way to be sure?"
"I've never even tried something like this before, I wouldn't know," Howlingnight said honestly.
Dottymask wailed her muzzle buried in the fur around her daughters neck as she cried into her. Waiting, hoping for life to fill her daughter once more. "Wake up my sweet..." She whimpered to her daughter, nudging her tiny head gently, "Please, please, accept her, cure her. She just wants to be loved, I love her, please," She begged, her gaze staring up at the ceiling in utter agony. Her brave little daughter didn't deserve this.
Snowbunny's beaten body lied in the corner of the den, but hearing Dottymask's wailing woke him back up. Forcing himself up he hissed the entire way until he stood up full. He sucked in a breath with a confident few steps he stumbled before walking over to Dirtykit, "She is going to die."
"Then let it end her suffering," Dottymask sniffed, but let out a sob almost immediately, she couldn't keep a stiff expression after saying such an awful thing, "This clan is no way for a sweet thing like her to live, Snowbunny. Just let her go, it's the most humane thing I could do at this point. You didn't see what they did to Quiveringkit, he was just a few moons old Snowbunny. Imagine how little regard they'll have for her when she's an apprentice. Just let her go peacefully."
Snowbunny stared at Dottymask for a moment longer than he anticipated. He hadn't realized someone like Dottymask could exist, someone with no hope, no regard to a life. Saw her children as animals that needed to be put down rather than cared for. He lifted up a stake jerking it off of Dirtykit's paws, but Dottymask immediately protested, which was met with a stake into her shoulder.
Dottymask shivered in pain as she slowly lied down, hardly able to breathe through the harsh strike to her shoulder. "But... I'm a queen," She said more quietly, her voice shaking in fright.
"No, you're really not," Snowbunny said, but looked at Howlingnight. He was remarkably relaxed, made no moves to stop him. Why? He wouldn't question a good thing for now and instead continued to remove the restraints, "Dirtykit, can you hear me?" He asked, "Blink your eyes four times if you can." He said as he began licking at her wounds. He needed to cover them up, but there was so much blood it was hard to find the source of the bleeding.

Dirtykit's head hung limply in her mother's paws eyes staring blindly ahead. She wasn't feeling pain anymore, the numbness that had started in her extremities had spread upwards until she felt very little at all. Her heart was beginning to slow, with the limited amount of blood left in her body it was struggling to pump what remained. She didn't even feel the bindings as they were removed, the sensation so dull that it didn't even register nor did the licks upon her back. But Snowbunny's words... Blink... it was a command, as she struggled to comply with what was asked of her. Even now, trying hard not to disappoint her mother. She was to week to lift her head, as she focused in on her eyelids. Closing them was easy enough, but opening them was difficult. She focused hard, but her body was numb, and unresponsive. Finally they lifted half way before falling, and this time remaining close...I'm sorry momma... she thought. Maybe I can be with you the next life
Snowbunny's heart seized as he watched the kit close her eyes one last time, his paw covering his mouth as his entire body shook. Something was shaking him, but he realized he was breathing in so hard that he was hyperventilating. She was dead. He came into his den, put all her trust into him and he had utterly betrayed her. His claws ran down his cheek, gripping onto it, he hardly even felt it. How was he ever going to live with himself?
Howlingnight walked up to Dirtykit sniffing her before rolling her over clumsily like she were a piece of prey. He was hoping she would be cured, that he would have good news to bring to Wintrystar, but he couldn't put all his faith into these gods. Who know what they would decide? And if they decided death then everyone would be doomed, according to Snowbunny it was against their wishes for the kits to be killed. Dirtykit had to live and for that reason he lifted her up in his jaws. He was practically holding her more by her body than her scruff as he moved her away and closer into the woods. The witches didn't have any herbs anymore, which meant it was up to him to do this the old fashion way.
He easily cleaned Dirtykit's fur in the snow before wrapping her up in sticky tree sap and leaves covering her entire torso with them. If he had cobwebs he would have used them, but there was no such thing up in WinterClan. Not only that, but Wintrystar didn't like the witches wasting their time with the demons so unfortunately for Dirtykit all she was going to get was getting wrapped up and hoping nature wouldn't take its course.
He was relieved to bring Dirtykit back to the nursery when he realized Dottymask wasn't there and she wasn't going to be there until the witches healed her up, which probably wouldn't be for a while. He looked desperately around the nursery. This couldn't be happening to him right now. Someone had to be willing to care for her. Suddenly his eyes landed on Sweetiepeach as he quickly approached her.
"No," Sweetiepeach said sternly to him.
"She's your cousin, you have to provide her care," Howlingnight argued.
"She's YOUR cousin too! And I'm only saying no because I think a little humility will do you some good so take accountability and warm her up," Sweetiepeach said scornfully.
Howlingnight blinked, lowered his muzzle down, picking up Dirtykit once more only to toss her at Sweetiepeach and run.
"ALVAH!" Sweetiepeach hissed at him as she vanished from the nursery. The black she-cat picked up Dirtykit, she felt surprisingly small for her age as she placed her at the warmth of her belly. Her kits were out playing in camp, luckily causing a ruckus somewhere else.
By the time Dirtykit woke up she had a few herbs laid out by her. They were small and shriveled, but Sweetiepeach was doing her best to mix it up. She had some experience with herbs from being a pathologist in Primal Instinct. Staring right at her was Lionkit, a younger kit hanging off the outside of the nest, looking at Dirtykit as if she were the most fascinating thing to him. "Hey mama the weirdos eyes are opening," He said as he poked Dirtykit's eye with a paw.

Dirtykit groaned, rolling tighter into a ball her entire body aching and to weak to fight off the other kit as it poked at her. Everything hurt, and almost all she could muster was weak whimpers and opening her eyelids slightly. The scent around her was unfamiliar, and so was the kit that was poking at her. Her head wobbled weekly as she tried to raise it, everything around her spinning. Her cheeks felt flushed and shivered from the infection that had set in from her wounds. The first thing to come into focus was her paws stretched out before her, cleaned and bound tightly to hide the deep lacerations on her paws from when she had struggled during the procedures. Wait... her paws... her eyes snapped back onto her paws, that were now cleaned and.....
An ear piercing shriek filled the nursery, as she stumble clumsily backwards and falling out of the nest onto the cold stone with a loud thump as she shook her head wildly back and forth trying to get her paws underneath her to get away "NOOO, NOOO, NOOO" she wailed over and over, pushing herself well past her body's limits to try get out the den, trying to drag her weak injured body away from the others "DON'T LOOK AT ME"
"Honey bun," Sweetiepeach called out to her as she got out of the nest and began to pull her back over. The queen was quite strong, holding the tiny she-kit down to prevent her from worsening her injuries.
"What's wrong with you!?" Lionkit shouted at Dirtykit, she had given him quite the scare.
"Lionkit go outside or be polite," Sweetiepeach warned him as she focused back on Dirtykit, licking the side of her face, "Honey, what's wrong?" She asked soothingly.

Dirtykit tried to get away, but the queen held her down and he frail body didn't have the strength to do more than wiggled under the stern paw. Her breathes becoming faster and faster as panic began to set in about being discovered preventing the words from coming out except for the scattered screams and shrieks as she exhaled. But the panic soon exhausted what little energy she had managed to recover, the screams dying down to slightly more understandable words though they were still jumbled and mostly incoherent "MY!...DIRT!... Don't Look!....I... Need.... Get.. Dirt... " she was shaking and crying from pain and fear as the queen gently licked her face in an effort to calm her down "MOMMY... Punished... clean..." she wailed, the thoughts of her mother flooding back and how she had cried thinking that she was dying "Mommy...Mommy...Mommy!! Where Mommy?!?!?"
She didn't know who this cat was, and she was scared. She couldn't be clean others would see her demon markings, and then Wintrystar would punish Mommy for not disciplining her enough. No one was supposed to see her demon marks, no one but mommy. The dirt that normally caked her fur had been removed to prevent the infection from getting worse and out of her wounds "Wint...mad..."
