Howlingnight said as he stood over Bluejay and Tundrakit, he said his words so casually like Tundrakit would know what it meant, but Bluejay understood. Tundrakit was bigger now, he had moved onto eating solid foods, he no longer needed her milk, nor was he as weak as he was when he first came into the world. She wasn't sure if him becoming a WinterClan warrior was good, but she did know from moons of isolation it beat being imprisoned.
"I guess it's your day to join back with the rest of your littermates," Bluejay said to him as she stroked the top of her sons head, "Tundra, live a happy life and if anyone gets in the way of it fight, whatever it takes, whatever sacrifices have to be made, fight for that happy life. You're not strong or fast like you're siblings, so you're going to have to be braver than them."

It was mostly true. They had been giving his mom... something. He didn't know what, couldn't really ask. But it left her not making as much milk. Okay with only one kit, except he was struggling as is. He had gotten somewhat bigger, sure, but it was clear to everyone he was a lot smaller than he should have been.
But he didn't want to go. He was so sleepy the day his siblings were led down here, but they seemed so sad. And scared. He didn't want to be like that, even if he did end up starving down here. Whoever that she-cat was wasn't his mom, and tears pricked the corner of his eyes thinking about leaving Bluejay behind.
"Mom..." He spoke solemnly, not fully understanding what she was saying. Brave? Could he be brave? "I'll try. But what about you? I don't want to go up there without you." There was nothing he could do, and in the back of his mind, he knew she couldn't either. But it was a plea, a desperate one as he tried not to hiccup around his tears.
"I don't know about me Tundra. For as long as you've been alive I've been in prison here. I doubt they'll ever let me leave here alive."
The last thing she wanted to lose was her spirit, she wanted to keep it so her kits would know what strength looked like. So they would know that if she had it in her they did too, but it was hard to stay strong in moments like these. It was stupid, she heard stories of her own mother, how she could escape any prison and even when times were hard she stayed positive. Somehow that was lost on her, she couldn't escape and right now, seeing that Tundrakit was leaving everything really did feel hopeless. She almost wished Howlingnight would insult her just so she could have some spitfire response back, but he didn't. No one really bothered her anymore, her situation, the silence, that spoke for itself and that alone was rough.
Howlingnight nudged Tundrakit forward, "Let's leave her be, there's a lot to go over with you."

The answer didn't help, the kit hiccuping as he tried to breathe. She was gonna be here until she died? How could he want to leave now? If he was so weak, he may as well die here with her. It was better than leaving mom alone. But Howlingnight kept nudging him forward, away to another fate. Tundrakit took a deep breath, steeling himself as he finally took that first step towards the exit on his own. "Fine, I'll go. But I'll be brave. I'll come back for you, mom, and we'll get our happy life together." Tundrakit wanted to sound confident, but his voice shook from the tears, how whole body following with shivers from the effort. A life without Bluejay wasn't gonna be a happy one. He had no idea how quickly that dream would be crushed here.
When they reached the top of the prison den Howlingnight stopped. His kindness was all muscle memory, he didn't feel the need to be compassionate, not emotionally, but there was a part of his mind that told him this was the moment to be gentle. Because somewhere he remembered the humane side of him that would be there for this kit, especially when the kits was family. But also because he knew what it was like to leave a prison and enter a whole new world, only the kits would be full of misery.
"You don't know it, but this den is going to be the most important den you ever walk out of. Nothing's ever going to be the same from here on out. No one likes your siblings, everyone hates your mom, and the leader of this clan has already decided your name will not be Tundrakit, it will be Maggotkit. I've tried my best to push you to use your muscles to have more will to fight back. I hope I've prepared you, but we can stand here for as long as you like. Just know that once you leave this den I won't be kind to you. So if you need a shoulder to cry on, if you want advice, or help, ask now because you won't receive it once we leave."

Tundrakit only managed to walk confidently till he was out of eyesight from Bluejay. The walkout of the prison was quickly taking it out of him. He was still small, still undernourished. It looked like it was only going to get worse, not that Tundrakit could imagine a worse. He stared out at the camp, exactly the same as the prison but a lot brighter. A wind whipped by that made him pull back briefly into the prison for shelter. His whiskers twitched, the first indication he was listening. The other was the hard look he gave his paws, biting his lip for a moment.
"Those are lies. We both know it." He wasn't as strong, he wasn't as smart, so he needed to be brave. This would be his last moments to even talk to Howlingnight. And Tundrakit didn't want his advice if he was gonna paint himself this way. If he cared, he wouldn't have stopped Bluejay's milk, or do more with him besides throwing him a few feet away from Bluejay just to crawl back to her. He couldn't understand Howlingnight, not at all. "You were never kind to begin with. Can you even expect me to live once I step out of here, or are you just waiting for us to all die?" It was a hard question, one that was spat out. He burned with anger, and with fear.
"I'm hoping to be defeated," Howlingnight said, plain and simple. His eyes were such a cold shade of blue they almost appeared white as they turned to him unnaturally slow, "by at least one of you."
The wind howled outside the den sending small chills inside the den. "My captors weren't very kind, they didn't know how to be. I never got a head start, I never stood a chance and I didn't," He withdrew a frost breath that swirled twice before evaporating, "I always thought that was cowardly, if someone's really was that powerful they should try to give their prisoners leverage, make things interesting. So now's your chance to ask the right questions or figure it out on your own."

Tundrakit's eyes widened. A sort of muted green color now. Maybe familiar to Howling, maybe not. To be defeated, though? Was that real or just another one of Howlingnight's games? Some sort of goal to give him? A bluff to give him hope only to dash it away? Tundrakit wanted to fight that, that having prisoners in the first place was cowardly or cruel. But something held him back, gaze flitting back towards the prison.
He couldn't see a thing, his own breath coming out in a puff only to be whipped away by the wind. Tundrakit needed to ask the right thing, it felt like a weight on his shoulders. Cause what? Where could he even start? How could he even know? Tundrakit would have to bluff, play along, get lucky. "You went through something similar?" The white kit swallowed dryly after the question. How could this cat do the same thing he was subject to? "How did you survive?" His voice sounded forced, air squeaking it's way out of his chest.
"Luck, maybe fate if you believe in that sort of thing. I was a kit, there were two bigger cats, I was beaten, eventually they would have beaten me to death. But my mom happened to find my captors and kill them. At the time she was just some random cat, but really the only reason I'm not a corpse is out of luck." Howlingnight said.
He looked back down at Maggotkit before lying down, apparently deciding that this would take a while, but he didn't seem bothered by it either.

That didn't help. Was he just supposed to sit here and wait until some random cat saves him? Sure, it might have been Howlingnight's answer, but it barely helped. Maggotkit needed to learn to bite his tongue, and for the first time, he did. He still needed this tom's help, much as he hated him.
Maggotkit was a little relieved when Howlingnight sat down, made it feel like he could ask more. He couldn't believe in fate, that it was his destiny or whatever to be treated like this. "Luck, huh? Then what else can I rely on to survive?"
Howlingnight looked thoughtful, "Your siblings have been monitored since the moment they were born. There isn't a single weakness their parents don't know and your foster mother knows what punishments put the fear of god in them, but you're different. I think you should use that, act pathetic, weak, then they won't put any time into you, you'll be off the radar. Then wait for the opportunity to run far away and get to DayClan. They can save your family, some are a three times as strong as I am. But I can see your uncertainty so I'll give you an advantage I never had. You can choose to have me as your friend, but my loyalties will remain with Wintrystar and the clan first or you can get one favor out of me that you can use at anytime."

Act weak? But he was supposed to be brave. Didn't those two go against each other? How could he be brave and weak? Maggotkit didn't know, how could he. He hadn't seen the world outside the prison, hadn't held a conversation with anyone else but his mother. Lots of information that Howlingnight told him was going in one ear and out the other. But only cause he was already at max capacity, his mind couldn't hold any more.
"Hang on, let me think for a moment." That moment stretched on for a while. And even during then, the thoughts hung over his head like rain clouds. How could he believe Howlingnight? Where even was Dayclan? Who would he meet there? That favor seemed pointless. Maybe he'd just put it off, or completely forget. Maggotkit didn't hold any of the cards in either situation. It hadn't dawned on him yet how hopeless the situation was. "Friends then."
"Friends till the end," Howlingnight said in response to Maggotkit.
Up in the sky, just in vision from where they sat, where the winds howled and the snow blew the aurora bloomed to life. The colors creating fantastical blurry imagery of greens and blues. "You'll like the world more than the people in it."
