The tiny white kit was almost invisible where he sat by a snow pile in camp. Alone, he observed the kits playing outside of the nursery and the warriors as they bustled around the clearing. Leekkit did this often--almost every waking hour when he could--because he yearned to understand the world around him. He was different, he could tell, but he didn't know why. Every other kit moved their mouth and understanding would flash in another's eyes. Yet, whenever he made a sound or moved his lips, no one understood and he couldn't either. No one had tried to explain anything to him and most of the other kits left him alone while the warrior's kept a close eye on him. He wondered why that was. The only kit that ever gave him any attention was a snowshoe tom, but last night, his friend wasn't in the nursery. Something must be wrong with me. The blue of his eyes deepened as tears threatened to spill and he buried his head in his chest to hide them. A strained whine tore from his lungs, but he remained oblivious to the sound.
For Sootmist this morning had been like many. He had awoken before the birds, slipped out of the warriors den, and hunted until the sun was high in the sky and his stomach rumbled like thunder. Unlike most mornings, it seemed that the only prey stirring were mice. Mice were annoying. His paws always seemed so very big while they were so very small - but it didn't seem to matter today as he walked back into camp with a bouquet of them hanging from his mouth by their tails.
So proud of his haul, Soot almost missed a small white kit sitting at the foot of the snowbank, just a foxtail from himself as he arrived. Although he continued onto the kill pile, Sootmist's head craned to scan the kit as he passed. He seemed upset.
Not being much for conversation himself, Soot found that a lot of his free time was spent sunning on the rocks and watching the Clan's young play. Because of that, he knew this one. He paid special attention to his interactions, especially the ones that involved warriors that seemed to baby him, and keep him as arm's length at the same time. That was more annoying than mice.
Spitting out all but two tails, Soot quickly corrected his course and made his way back over to the kit. Something told him that he had to make his presence known, which was a strange task for the tom. Although he was quiet, his size and gait usually spared him the trouble of saying hello. It was a strange kind of anxiety that filled him as he neared the kit and saw how the vision of him swam in the tom's shadow. Without hesitating, he leaned down to nuzzle the little one's head and drop a mouse at his paws, his own still dangling from his mouth as he straightened. Soot did his best not to look threatening, although his wild tufts of long grey fur- even wilder from hunting - was little help in the matter.

Blinking furiously against the water in his eyes, Leekkit would have been completely clueless of another approaching if not for their shadow. Seeing the shade reach his paws, his white head bobbed in surprise before his eyes slowly followed the shadow up to its source. Neck craning back to glimpse the massive, grey tom in all his glory, Leekkit's mouth fell open in awe. The size of the tom was startling, but the kit was too distracted by the fact that he'd been approached at all. A squeak left his mouth as the warrior leaned closer, but he relaxed once he realized the contact was comforting. It reminded him of sleeping in the nursery, curled up with the other kits. Soon though, the warrior drew back and before Leekkit could properly react, a mouse was dropped in front of him.
What's going on? It was only then that he realized the warrior had a mouse in his mouth too. The kitten looked between his mouse and the wild looking tom for a while, before his head cocked to one side. He pressed one of his paws to the rodent as if to make it clear that it was there. Surely, the strange cat must have accidentally dropped some of his meal.
A twitch of a smile flashed across Sootmist's face at the kit's squeak as he moved next to him to take a seat. Curling his massive tail around his paws, he merely dropped the second mouse in front of himself and took a bite. Chewing and swallowing before he dipped down to use his nose to nudge the other mouse closer to Leekkit, he settled into his spot and continued eating his snack, watching the other warriors as they came and went.
It wasn't so much of an offering, as it was a decision. Sootmist settled in easily, having chosen this kit to share his snack with - presumably whether he liked it or not. Although it couldn't have made much sense to the kit - what with the confidence in this stranger's eyes in his to him, it only made sense. He usually wasn't the kind to approach the kits himself, but he wasn't one to leave anyone upset and alone; and of course, he didn't feel much like eating by himself.
It wasn't long before an apprentice came around a nearby corner tripping over their own feet. Soot nudged the kit again to get his attention, suppressing the amusement from his face as he directed him to look with the nod of his head. The young cat fumbled over the rocky path, a large rabbit in her mouth obstructing the view of her paws. Finally, the rabbit's foot lodged itself between the hard ground and her own paw, sending her into a forward lurch. Quickly, she straightened and surveyed the area to see if anyone had noticed her mishap, and Soot averted his eyes faster than the wind could blow. He let them drift around the area for a moment before coming back to rest on Leekkit. Sometimes, it was nice to just be in the background.

Understanding dawned on Leekkit as the warrior began eating and nudged froward the other mouse. Lowering his head to take a bite, he realized how hungry he actually was. It should have come as no surprise since any time he felt sad his appetite became voracious soon after. Digging into the mouse, the fluffy tom completely forgot about his earlier woes. Being in the company of this adult was much too distracting for that, but in a good way.
Swallowing down an impressive bite, Leekkit sat up straight from another nudge. This time, his gaze followed Sootmist's gesture until the struggling apprentice came into view. As she worked to carry the rabbit across the clearing, amusement reached his eyes. Although he felt bad for her when she lurched forward, a giggle flew from his mouth unbeknownst to him. Instinctively, his eyes also darted down to suggest to her that he hadn't just laughed at her slip-up. After a few seconds, he peered up again, but at the warrior this time. He blinked as he noticed that Sootmist had also been looking at him, but his expression was almost fond. It wasn't a look he was used to being on the receiving end of and in a show of appreciatiation, he offered the tom the largest smile he could form.
