Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Night fell. The clan made their nests and hunted for prey and water, and he crawled under a blackberry bush and lay there alone. There was nothing left for him to say. He was grieving, he was desolate, he was angry. He was furious with Firetooth for putting them into this position, and the bitterness in the back of his throat was all that kept him going. His claws curled in toward his pads and the pressure eased only when he started to sleep.
There had been no scents of his clanmates in proximity of the blackberry bush, nor the sound of approaching pawsteps, yet Chimerastar felt himself being enveloped in a warm embrace as a cat laid down beside him and curled their body around his comfortingly. "You seem a bit stressed," a soft, familiar voice chuckled. Despite the hardship of the past couple days for Swiftclan, the clan's namesake didn't seem very perturbed by the situation at all; Lightningswift smiled gently at his son, before leaning forward to groom his shoulder, in a way he used to do when the leader was a kit. "I don't blame you, any leader would be frustrated by such a hard loss."
Who was bothering him now? His pelt pricked with frustration. Chim had shut everyone out, friends and family both, and they should have understood by now he wanted to be left alone. Were they worried about him falling into old habits again? He was just grieving for a few days, couldn't they trust he knew better than to push them away for too long, that he had learned that lesson? Chim grit his teeth as he prepared to snap back at the stupid statement, yeah, of course, I'm stressed, when something in the familiar tone stopped him.
His eye opened and he craned his neck to see his father. His breath quivered and caught in his throat. Dad? He hadn't seen him in so long. Chim had done his best to make amends, hell he'd named his clan after the tom, but sometimes he still felt he had yet to earn the forgiveness Lightningswift had shown him. And his family had made it clear he should be easier on himself, but his father had been his idol as much as his brother, and he couldn't help making comparisons, drawing lines from his father's successes to his own failures.
Chim blinked rapidly at him, trying to filter through all the emotions he was feeling, and abruptly he flopped back to the ground and turned his back on his father, placing his paws over his ears. "If you don't blame me, then you should leave me alone and let me grieve. Come back later."
Lightningswift couldn't help but roll his eyes, smiling fondly at his son's dramatics; he was all too used to Chimerastar's sulking habits by now, and by now he was certain his son knew that dear ol' dad wasn't giving up that easily. Without any hesitation the ghostly tom stood up and moved over so that he was at Chim's side once again before sitting back down, tail sweeping to rest over Chim's back. "Do you blame yourself, for what happened?" He asked evenly, his voice soft and calming, but tinged with genuine concern. Looking at his son, the answer appeared to be obvious, but the 'what-ifs' of the situation were numerous, and not all of them could've been changed by the Swiftclan leader's actions alone.
"No. Firetooth was the one to incur SunClan's rage, the blame rests on him alone," he replied without missing a beat. "There was nothing I could do to spare the clan after that. I couldn't even exile him because he's our only medicine cat, and even I'm not stupid enough to go without one. As soon as he finishes training an apprentice, though, he's gone."
Chim didn't open his eyes, though he knew his father was sitting right in front of him. I don't want to talk to him, I'm not in the mood, he told himself firmly. Maybe if he said it often enough, it would be true.
Though his son couldn't see it, Lightningswift cast a weary glance outside the bush, watching as the Medicine Cat in question passed by on the far other end of the clearing, carrying a large fern leaf full of herbs in his tired jaws. "He's a gifted cat," he noted evenly. "Normally I wouldn't recommend throwing aside that kind of talent, but I can tell your quarrel with him goes a bit deeper than just recent events. On the subject of his actions against the Sun God, Starclan has decided to reserve judgement on all parties involved, but what happens to him right now is up to you."
Chim snorted. "StarClan's reserving judgment? Gee, that's new. Maybe there's a reason all of the other clans have found new gods that actually care about them. Maybe I'll make that Firetooth's next job... he can scout out our next religion. Maybe we'll just worship the Sun God instead, then Bloodystar will be merciful enough to kill Firetooth, there's your happy ending."
Lightningswift let out an indignant snort, lightly cuffing his son over the head for that particular comment. "You've grown sassy in your old age, Chim. I've always wondered where you got that from," he meowed half-jokingly. "Starclan's reserving judgement because it'll take seasons, if not generations, to fully comprehend the effects of Firetooth and Autumngossamer's actions on the forest; for better or for worse. Cause and effect is funny like that, you see; nothing's as black and white as you'd think. You'll understand it better when you join your mother and sisters and I in the stars someday."
It wasn't like he didn't believe in StarClan; clearly, he did, or he wouldn't be talking to his father right now. And Chim wasn't so daft to think he wouldn't make it in, after leading two clans he thought StarClan was the least he deserved. It would be good to see his family again once he passed on, most of the cats he loved were there after all, and eternity with them didn't sound so bad. And yet... life thoroughly exhausted Chim. When it was time, he wanted to go into a peaceful sleep and forget it all; he didn't want to make up to find he now had an afterlife to deal with, and he certainly didn't want to spend eternity watching the living cats make stupid mistakes. Maybe StarClan would be a nice place, but it was really just a reminder that not even death would grant him a good rest.
"Well, you're right about one thing: what happens next is up to me. As soon as I have a suitable replacement, I'm kicking Firetooth out of the clan."
