Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The day after his speech to the clan, they were on the move again. Chimerastar usually led the way on, but today he sent Shatteredshine to take his place at the front of the patrol. The clan was gathered in loose groups, following her path through unfamiliar land as they headed closer to the forest clans. A few cats headed off here and there to look for prey or rest, but most of them remained together.
The ginger tom dropped back as he wove through the ranks, searching unobtrusively for a particular apprentice. She had been injured in the fight, so he looked first near Firetooth and worked out from there until he finally found her.
"Seapaw," Chim called as he drew near, "are you busy? I'd like to talk to you."
Seapaw had reluctantly stayed near Firetooth, appeasing the watchful eyes that were around her, though she had managed to push herself to the outer most part of his little group. Her wounds were still visible from the battle but healing well, but no one seemed to listen when she said she was fine. As she followed the others, her paws seeming to dance off of the ground with each step, she began to hum to herself unaware of Chimerastars approach until he spoke her name. Her eyes met his and her pace slowed a little, thinking she was in trouble. "No, I'm not busy... is something wrong?"
"Not at all. Come with me," he said as he turned the other way. Chim led her away from the group and into the tall trees surrounding them. He didn't know the land here well, but as long as they were in distant earshot of the traveling group, he wasn't worried about getting lost. "You know, Shatteredshine has been assessing all of the apprentices while they're out training. She said you've been doing very well, and that you handled yourself in the battle." He cast her an admiring glance. "Did you feel ready for that fight?"
She nodded slightly and followed him as he led her away from the others, her blue gaze wondered the area as they entered the surrounding trees, their talness making her feel even smaller than she was. Her ears warmed at the compliment even though it had been indirectly given by another cat. "I dont think anyone was truly ready for that battle, I wasnt scared though, so I guess a part of me was in some way ready." She wasnt sure if he would understand, she didn't even fully understand it, but she was honest.
Chim was already nodding. "I've never liked battling. Maybe because I was so bad at it when I was younger, and I still have the scars to show for it." He had only been an apprentice when Evelyn had clawed out his eye and changed the course of his life forever. It had taken a long time for him to recover from that blow.
"Shatteredshine thinks you're ready to become a warrior," he explained to her casually, "and I trust her judgment. Your mentor said the same." As much affection as he held for Fuzzypeach, he trusted his daughter much more than her mentor when it came to promoting warriors. "But I'm not sure I agree that warriorhood is your destiny. Tell me truly: do you want to spend the rest of your life picking fights?"
The dainty apprentice looked at his face, the scar where his eye should have been causing her heart to drop a little, but the feeling was pushed away by one more overwhelming at the mention of her becoming a warrior. She couldn't quite place what it was, not excitment exactly, maybe a little but more than that she felt anxious. Memories of the battle with Sunclan flooding back to her, the blood and the bodies followed by the sadness and tension filled air as the group gathered themselves once more. "I dont want to do that again, the battle with Sunclan was devastating enough and everything that followed seemed to be even worse. I wanna help though, how can I do that if I'm not a warrior?" It took a lot to deter the little she-cat, she was adventurous and had lost count of how many dangerous situation she had put herself in, but those had been her choice and that was what made the fight different... she didn't choose it, it chose her as well as the rest of Swiftclan.
Chim was surprised by how deeply her concern struck him. For moons, he had considered himself useless because he didn't want to fight for his clan; maybe he had been useless, his missing eye kept him from hunting well in the beginning, and most days he brought nothing at all home to the clan. He grew up in a prodigious family and he felt they had unreasonably high expectations he could never meet, and every time he failed he fell deeper into the dark. Maybe Seapaw hadn't discovered that landslide yet, but her doubts just reminded him of how far his doubts had dragged him down.
"You can be one of my scouts, Seapaw," he told her simply, and he let the offer hang in the air for a moment before he went on. "I talked about them briefly during the meeting last night; let me tell you more now. I want a group of cats at my side who are peaceful, level-headed, and observant. Now that we're going to e moving around, I need someone to search the land ahead and guide us to suitable camps to live in. That would be your job, finding new places to live. Then, once we find a camp, you would be a guard. You wouldn't need to fight anymore. You would watch over the camp and the surrounding land, and if you saw anything - a storm, or a predator, or an enemy clan - your job would be to signal the camp and all the surrounding warriors, so they would be prepared."
Seapaw stopped walking, letting silence once again fill the air, her blue eyes turned to Chimerastar and for a moment she just stared at him. She had found the new position interesting when he had brought it up the first time but had chosen not to ask more about it, she didnt think she would be an option for it. She was small but feisty, she put herself into dangerous situations because she enjoyed the excitment. "You want me to be a scout?" She wasnt sure what to say, but as she thought back to the surprise attack a shudder coursed through her like a wave. "If you think I'll be able to help Swiftclan by being a scout then okay." Her voice was quiet, but her confidence was returning, she would be able to prevent situations like the invasion, no one would have to go through that again. "Yes! I'll do it, I'll be a scout, I wont let Swiftclan down."
Chim watched her carefully, his half-gaze open but unreadable. What would she think of the offer? It was a lot of responsibility to place on a young cat, but he believed she could do it: he knew she would be a good scout, she would give it her all, and maybe succeeding at the new role would help her become more confident in herself.
"I know you won't," he asserted when she finished, with a slight nod of approval. "You will give it your all, and that is all I can ask of you. It will be difficult at first. You'll be learning, but so will I; together, we'll decide what the Scouts will be in the future. You'll be shaping the clan with your own two paws. Does that scare you?"
