Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. "Flamingstar?" Floodfate poked his head into the leader's den, glancing about tentatively for her. The grey-and-white tom tended to keep as far away from her as possible, he felt she didn't trust him and had good reason not to, but he couldn't avoid her forever. "There's someone here who wants to speak with Flamingsoul. I don't know anyone else by that name, so I guess he means you? He's waiting just outside the camp."
After a beat, the warrior bowed his head to her. He told the visitor to stay away from the camp and out of sight until the leader could come to speak with him, but he was feeling antsy about leaving an intruder unprotected.
Leaning against the trunk of a tree, the dark blue tomcat waited casually for his old ally to arrive. It had been far too long since he had seen her; now it was time he stepped back into the limelight.
Flamingstar perked her ears as Floodfate poked his head into her den. Her unreadable expression instantly swapped to a confused look. Who wanted to speak with her? She thought perhaps it had been one of the rogues living on their territory that she had given permission but they only knew her as Flamingstar, not Flamingsoul. The ginger leader rose to her paws and followed Floodfate out of the camp. She froze in her steps when she laid eyes on the tom she used to like, her first real crush was here, in Nightclan territory. "Raijin" she whispered under her breath in surprise. The beautiful Nightclan leader looked down at her paws but side-eyed Floodfate. "Thank you, Floodfate. I can take it from here." She was beginning to warm up to Floodfate since she had ordered her Loyal Guards to interrogate him. Since then, he had shown great promise and loyalty to Nightclan and had definitely caught Flamingstar's eye.
So they did know each other. Floodfate stifled his curiosity - he wasn't about to push the limits but sticking around any longer. He nodded and quickly retreated from the pair.
He looked up at her with hooded eyes and a slow smile crept crooked over his features. "You look beautiful," he told her quietly, lazily drinking her in before his intense gaze met hers once more. Raijin pushed off of the tree and headed her way, his pace slow and careful. She looked the same as she had before, but he sensed a difference in the energy around her. How much had leadership changed her? "Finally overthrow the old leader? I always knew you could do it."
She looked back up from her paws as he approached, her heart racing. She kept herself from smiling at his compliment. He was just as stunning himself as he had been when they met. Unfortunately, now she was in a relationship with Kotori and couldn't quench her curiosity if there was still chemistry between them or not...Or could she? She looked into his intense eyes, breathlessly. "Y-yes, I did" she answered him, trying to keep a professional composure around him. "What are you doing here, Raijin?" She finally asked, anxious about his answer.
"I need a place to stay. The Regime is less welcoming than they once were, and I was looking for somewhere tame to settle down. Then I remembered I had a friend in NightClan. Even if you don't have room for me, it's nice to see you again." That wasn't what he had planned on saying, but it felt right. Raijin really was happy to see her after what he thought was the last time. They had both grown since then, but the way she said his name was still so sweet to his ears.
Those words played over and over in her head, sounding like a soothing lullaby. After all this time he still considered her a friend...or did he? What if he was saying anything to get into Nightclan?
Even if you don't have room for me, it's nice to see you again
The next words sent chills down her spine and she longed to be close to him again. Surely this was real. He wouldn't betray her. She was a friend to him and he was hers. "Do you plan to stay long?" She asked, hoping he would say yes and wasn't looking to just stay a little while and leave. It would be lovely to have her friend back in her life, even if they were just friends.
Was he planning on staying long? Raijin didn't know. He had planned on coming here first before he visited the League, but where would he go after that? Where was he going to live? He needed somewhere quiet to lay low for a while, and the clans were rarely chaotic. It could be a good fit, somewhere new to live while he established himself.
"With a welcome like this, how could I not?" he responded, tilting his head as his smile softened his eyes. "I have someone else to visit for a few days, some unfinished business, but after... after, I'll need someplace to stay. Ever since we've met I wanted to know what kind of leader you'd turn out to be. I just didn't know I could experience it firsthand."
She couldn't help the purr that rose from her throat and the smile that was so wide it made her pretty turquoise eyes squint. "Nightclan would be honored to have you join us. Though, now, I only worry about living up to your expectations."
Raijin laughed. "I lost control of my army in a bet, so I can't judge your leadership," he assured her. "It was about time for me to leave the Regime anyway." The militaristic cats wouldn't have let him stay Commander for much longer, not with how he was acting. Shule was on the verge of discovering how he was using apprentices to smuggle products through the tunnels, and she wouldn't have let him get away with it.
She chuckled, "unfortunately, though, I must keep you prisoner first. It's nothing personal. I imprisoned my own mate's sister before she joined." She began to lead him back to Nightclan camp, flicking her tail to gesture for him to follow her.
"Did you really?" he laughed again, shaking his head as he kept close to her side. Time had not improved his perception of personal space, and he walked close enough their pelts were nearly brushing. "I suppose that's fair, then. A little more time in prison will do me well." There was a slight pause as he finished speaking, but there was a hesitance at the end of his words. After a few seconds, he spoke again, more carefully. "I'm glad to hear you found a mate. Ruling can be lonely if you don't have some good company."
I'm glad to hear you found a mate. Ruling can be lonely if you don't have some good company.
His words stung and she forced herself not to flinch. He could have been her mate if they hadn't gone their separate ways to fulfil their dreams. "I hope your not implying that I found a mate because I'm lonely." She gave him a hard look, taking slight offense. "A good ruler doesn't need a tom to be a good leader. I'm perfectly capable of pursuing my ambitions without a mate."
“I don’t doubt that you’re capable,” he replied with a twitch of whiskers. “I would be disappointed if you let your mate anywhere near the leadership, anyway; his job is to look pretty, not do your job. But that doesn’t mean a little company is a bad thing. I always liked to have a friend nearby to confide in.” Not that he had ever done much confiding, Raijin knew better than to spill too many secrets. But he has spend a rare meeting with several other cats just to talk with them about their tiny loves and unwind.
She had to admit, that was a good save. She calmed herself once more as she led him down the path into the cenote. "I don't need to confide in anyone. No one, not even my mate, needs to know everything that goes on in my day or in my mind." She halted at the end of the path and revealed the large cavern at the bottom of the cenote. Moss and stalagtites hung from the ceilings, large crystals could be found jutting out of the ground and floors in patches, smaller caves lined the cavern walls where the members of the clan slept, and tunnels veered off leading to different rooms further into the cavern, including the prisoner camp. At the back of the main cavern stood Flamingstar's throne, a smooth rock curved to fit her body and lined with crystals. Perched atop her throne was her beautiful white and gold barn owl which swooped from the throne and landed upon Flamingstar's shoulders as she entered the cavern with Raijin, stretching it's elegant and powerful wings. It stared at Raijin with intense, round eyes.
"Then you're a stronger cat than I am," he said mildly, not sounding very surprised. Flamingstar always had twice the resolve and dedication he did. Raijin had accepted long ago that every part of life was fleeting, and he let it all slip between his paws at the slightest hint of change in the wind. She would dig her claws in and fight the current until it dragged her away, and he would respect that, even if he thought it was futile. Keeping her secrets to herself was just another level of defense that would eventually crumble.
He glanced around the cavern slowly, doubt beginning to creep into his mind. He thought he was done with caves and tunnels, but here he was in another large and glittery underground pit. The crystals might have impressed a lesser cat, but he had been in the Regime, and he had seen displays like this every day. The owl was unusual, and he stiffened as it flew toward them. Owls were predators, but the leader was so calm at his side, it threw him off; he didn't move but watched it very carefully as it landed on Flamingstar.
Rajin swallowed apprehensively. More terrifying than the predator itself was the unnatural way it hung around them, not screeching in fear or attacking out of anger, just calmly resting on her shoulders. It was wrong and every fiber of his being recoiled from the sight. His intense gaze narrowed on the bird, and though his heart was racing, his face didn't betray a hint of his shock.
"Pleasant trick you've got there," he muttered unhappily, "I didn't realize you were so desperate for warriors that you had turned to birds. Will I be sharing my den with a finch, or perhaps a fox?" Uncouth, but he was rattled. "I suppose that bird must make a better confidant than most cats; no chance it will go on and tattle to the other clans about your intentions. Yet somehow I doubt it gives very useful advice."
The dark ginger leader snorted. "Please. This owl is more of a Nightclan warrior than any of these pitiful cowards. Her hunting is exquisite and flawless. She's completely soundless during her hunts and can usually bring back more prey than my most elite hunters. Besides, no one suspects an owl hunting on their territory. She will bring back prey from all over the forest clans and no one suspects that Nightclan is getting their prey." Flamingstar purred, brushing her tail against her magnificent owl. "And many wonder how Nightclan's prey source is so plentiful, little do they know some of it is theirs." She chuckled, maliciously. "Nightclan will be well fed this leafbare thanks to her. So, say all you want about my owl but you don't want to find yourself at the other end of her talons. She can shred a cat in seconds with her long talons and razor sharp beak. Without her, I'm just a leader. With her by my side, I'm a goddess."
As she finished, Nyra let out a few clicking noises and fluffed her feathers. "Hm, good news." Flamingstar mewed. "She likes you. You must give off good vibes. Your in luck. But don't get too comfortable, she is under my command." The dark ginger leader gave Raijin a wink.
Raijin believed she thought that, but he didn't believe for a moment it was true. The owl might follow her orders for now, but no creature would bend its will to serve a cat, and the moment the pressure grew too much he knew it would break away from her. Her training was impressive, but it wasn't infallible. Her confidence was misplaced.
"If your clan is so pitiful even a bird is a better warrior, why do you even keep them around? It's a waste of her... abilities to hunt and fight for a group of cats that can't look after themselves. You'd have fewer cats to feed if you trimmed the useless fodder from your army." Raijin was discontent. He wasn't prepared to deal with an owl in the camp, and he hadn't factored it into any of his plans. Was this bird going to get in his way and force a rift between them?
The blue tom looked away from them both, slowly exhaling away his concerns. Then he shifted his attention back to Flamingstar and bowed his head deeply. "Forgive me. It isn't my place to question how you run your clan, especially when I know nothing about it. I was blindsided by your friend, but I hope we can be on good terms moving forward." Raijin would prefer the owl leave and they never see each other again, but he knew better than to say that to the leader. "Does she have a name?"
Flamingstar began to bristled, her anger getting the best of her. She opened her mouth to challenge Raijin, to remind him of his own failure to lead a clan and that he was in no position to tell her how to run her clan but he apologized. Though, she still felt as if he was implying her clan was weak. Yes, they were a rather pitiful group but they at least held their ground. No clan dares to cross Nightclan, not even Sunclan themselves, yet. Besides, Sunclan was obviously the superior clan in the forest and yet, Nightclan has managed to escape their clutches numerous times.
"While I accept your apology, Nightclan is much more powerful in numbers. What we lack in hunting, we make up for in battle and in our numbers. Haven't you noticed that Nightclan has not been under attack since I became leader? Have you noticed that no clan has even attempted to take control of Nightclan? It's because they fear us. We are unknown to many of the other clans and secrecy is our strength. We intimidate them because they failed to understand us." Her eyes narrowed, and she stood much taller. "Never underestimate my clan because that will be your biggest mistake. Nightclan can be your worst enemy or your most powerful ally. It is your decision to make." She let that sink in, giving him a long hard warning stare. "Her name is Nyra, by the way." She finished with a flick of her tail, relaxing her fur.
"I should not have spoken so freely," he acquiesced. This wasn't an argument worth getting into, and he was already silently scolding himself for letting his tongue slip. Flamingstar was a touchy cat, he could see that now, and he needed to tread more carefully. Another mistake like that and he wouldn't be sleeping in her prison, he would be left out alone in the cold. Raijin had spent enough time alone for one lifetime.
"Nyra is a very sweet name. Does she not want for a warrior name?" He glanced over the owl without a hint of curiosity.
Flamingstar relaxed more, relieved to see curiosity replacing the fear he had for Nyra. "I chose the name Nyra because I felt it was different. I liked the name and it suited her. She knows her name but I don't exactly speak owl and she doesn't exactly speak cat. She knows key words but that's about it. So I'm not sure if she actually likes the name or not but I needed to call her something."
