It hadn't been too long since his leg was injured in a fight with rogues but Firewind was determined to get on with his life. And one of the most important things he needed to do was to continue his apprentice's training. And as an added bonus, it would be good therapy for his leg to train with Giantpaw. The break still pained him some but it wasn't anything he couldn't bear. What bothered him the most was giving up his position in the clan. No cat wanted someone with a permanent limp to be second in command. It would make NightClan look weak in front of the other clans and that would invite nothing but trouble. With a shake of his coat, the former deputy changed his thoughts to something else.
The orange tabby stood outside the cenote as he waited for his apprentice to arrive. A warm light breeze ruffed his fur as he gazed up at the waxing moon. The stars of Silverpelt were just starting to become visible since the sun had recently set for the day. Soon the days of cold will be upon them again but for now he'd enjoy what was left of Greenleaf.
Giantpaw was hesitant to meet Firewind tonight. It was the first time he'd see him since The Injury. The apprentice had been so ready to start learning how to fight - he still thought about the dogs with horror and dread - but now he was going to lose that experience. How could he learn from a cat with a limp? Still, he went. If nothing else he could explain to Firewind that it wasn't personal, but he needed to have a mentor with full capability.
He approached the tabby, suddenly aware of his own fluid movements. Firewind would never be able to move like this again. Giantpaw felt sorry for the retired deputy. "Hey," he said as he drew closer.

"Hey," Firewind greeted Giantpaw with a smile. Inside he had doubts about how he could train an apprentice but he determined he wouldn't let it show and determined it wouldn't hold him back. He was going to work through this and get it done right if it's the last thing he'd ever do. "Ready for some battle training? I heard from my mom about the dog fight awhile ago. I felt bad it happened before you had any real battle lessons." He started walking on the path toward the training area. "By the time I'm finished with you, you'll be one of the best fighters NightClan has ever seen."
Giantpaw returned the smile but it felt forced. He wondered if Firewind's was, too. "Of course I'm ready," he scoffed, tail swaying with the promise of getting to move around. Then he paused what he was about to say for a moment, thinking about Firewind's words. "Who's your mom?" he asked casually, pretending not to feign interest. He really didn't know anything about his mentor and he'd hoped to keep it that way. He knew he wouldn't be able to learn from a cat with filthy blood. But now the curiosity was eating him up, and perhaps he was just looking for more reasons to get out of Firewind's mentorship. The tom's promise of Giantpaw's good fighting skills had felt awkward to his ears. There was no way this limping cat would be able to teach him anything of use.

"Nightsky," he replied. He was still unaware of how his apprentice felt about bloodlines. That kind of thinking never occurred to him. It didn't matter to him what a cat's parentage was. What mattered was if a cat was loyal and brave, one who could be trusted. "She was with you then." For some reason he hoped he liked his mother. She could be strong willed but she's one of the bravest cats he knew. He like to think she taught him that.
Trying to smooth out his limp, he continued on toward the training meadow.
( ooc: Sorry, I don't remember how that all turned out.)

"Oh," replied Giantpaw, considering this. "I remember - we were stuck in the bush together. She was very smart. Nightsky saved my life." Giantpaw didn't know anything about their family and he sort of wanted to keep it that way. He found himself doing that more and more. What he didn't know couldn't hurt him. He thought of Viridianpaw and how he purposefully asked zero questions about his only friend's life. It was just so much easier that way.
The apprentice followed Firewind, hyperaware of the limp. It was all he could focus on. What if he hurt his mentor on accident during practice? No, that was the wrong question. He shouldn't care. Yes, he liked and respected Firewind, but he wasn't even deputy anymore! Giantpaw needed to let go of that small bit of residual loyalty. The right question should be: what if he didn't learn anything from this cat? Much better.

"She never told me that," Firewind replied casting a glance over his shoulder at Giantpaw. "I'm glad she did." Danger followed in their pawsteps everyday from the life they led, but actually hearing about an incident caused him great concern. I'll have to thank her the first chance I get, he decided.
Finally he saw the entrance to the training meadow. He felt a bit tired from the long walk but determined not to show it. He stood in the center of the meadow and turned to face Giantpaw. This place is filled with so much history, he thought as he looked around. Generations of NightClan cats learned the ways of a warrior in this very place and now it was his turn to pass that rich heritage on to his apprentice. "The first thing to learn is how to stand when you fight. Keep the joints in your legs slightly bent like this." He demonstrated the stance. "That way you'll be able to spring in any direction whether you're attacking or dodging an attack."

Finally, he was getting to learn the good stuff. How to fight. But fighting Firewind just didn't seem fair. Or beneficial, he reminded himself. That was more important.
"Okay, like this?" asked Giantpaw, trying to copy his mentor's stance. His eyes remained a bit longer on the old deputy's bad leg before he shifted his eyes quickly away in embarrassment.

Firewind was getting used to other cats staring at his injured leg but that didn't mean he liked it any better. He sighed inwardly as he tried to put himself in Giantpaw's place. He'd be worried that his mentor wasn't capable anymore to train him. A glint of determination flashed in his eyes. Although he had to step down from his position, he'd prove to every cat that he wasn't ready for the elder's den yet!
"Yes, that's good," he said. Then suddenly he moved forward, planted his front paws in the ground before Giantpaw. In a swift, sweeping motion, the orange tabby swung his hind legs around and crashed them into the apprentice's legs. This move used his upper body strength, something he'd have to rely more on now. Completing the spin, he regained his feet quickly once again.
Giantpaw felt himself falling to the ground out of nowhere, his legs under him one second and out to the side another. "What in the -?!"
Firewind was still standing there in front of him. How had he moved so quickly? Maybe there was one move Giantpaw could learn from his mentor after all. In excitement, the large cat scrambled back up to his paws. His tail flicked eagerly. "Can you show me that move, Firewind??"

A huge smile lit Firewind's face for two reasons. He was pleased the attack worked. He knew he wasn't up to speed yet since his injury and he wanted to show Giantpaw he could still fight. And secondly, he was glad to see a genuine eagerness to learn from his apprentice. "The secret in perfecting a leg sweep is learning to balance your weight on your front legs. I'll demonstrate it again without making contact this time." He swept his legs forward and toward the end of the sweep, he pushed his front feet off the ground, righting his body so that he faced Giantpaw when he landed. "Want to give it a try?"
Giantpaw had begun to nod when he stopped himself, the light beginning to die from his eyes. What if he harmed his mentor? He shouldn't care, but it seemed like he did, so...
"No. Firewind, I shouldn't. I don't want to hurt you."

"I'm not made of spider webs!" he spat. Realizing he spoke a bit harshly, he continued in a calmer voice adding a smile to his face. "Don't worry about me. If I survived a fall from a tree with a rogue on top of me, I surely can handle an apprentice's attack." He thought back to his accident. It changed his life in more ways than one. He lost his position in the clan but he gained a wonderful mate, Creampuff.
"Besides, how can you learn a move if you don't practice it? Come on, give it a try. I'm ready."
He was still so unsure, but if he did hurt Firewind on accident, at least he would know then that he needed a new mentor. The apprentice let out the weakest of shrugs and sighed.
"You're my mentor and I'll do as you ask." But still, he was nervous. Giantpaw copied the same stance they had taken a moment ago, ready to dart forward as Firewind had done.
The first time didn't go so smoothly. He aimed for the old deputy's legs, but instead his legs slipped forward early and he flung himself across the ground, sliding along with an embarrassing cloud of dirt following.

"Not bad for a first try," Firewind coughed as he breathed in some dust and then wiped his stinging eyes. Then an idea came to him. "You know, if you can add a dust cloud to your attack, it would be an effective ploy to disorient your enemy. But for now, we'll just work on the basic attack. Once you get it down, you can try to add the dust cloud to it later."
"What you need to do is to strengthen your front legs. A good exercise for that is this." The orange tabby went over to a tree and placed his hind feet against the trunk part way up thus throwing most of his weight onto his front legs. Slowly he bent his front legs so that his chin touched the ground and then he straightened them once again. He did ten pushups before coming off the tree. "If you do several reps a night, you'll feel your legs getting stronger in no time."
"Try the move again but this time do it slower and concentrate more on your front leg balance rather than the swing. You can speed it up to normal speed later."
Giantpaw focused, concentrating as Firewind had instructed. He was embarrassed as all get out and his face was hot, but his mentor didn't seem to be making fun of him for it at all. That was...unexpected. He went for Firewind's legs again, slower this time. Please, please work.Whitemuzzle

Firewind watched as Giantpaw slowed his attack down and concentrated on the mechanics of the move. He could have easily avoided the attack but that wouldn't have accomplished anything right now. He wanted his apprentice to learn the move. Then he felt his legs buckle and he fell on the ground. With a quick roll, he was on his feet once again. His leg hurt some but he ignored the pain.
"Not bad this time," he meowed. "You did much better. How did it feel to you?"
He had really done it! "That felt amazing," he replied automatically, eyes twinkling for the first time since he'd met Firewind today. For the moment, he forgot about having a mentor that couldn't walk right. "Can we try it again, faster? I want to try that dust cloud thing you mentioned by the end of the day."

He was happy Giantpaw seemed more confident. "Sure, go ahead. And I'll show you how to avoid the attack if it's used against you and a counter move as well." He readied himself for another attack.
