It was sun-high by the time Colt reached the city and his black pelt felt weighted down by the heat. Twolegs were bustling all around, so as the rogue traveled, he kept to higher levels--tiptoeing on ledges and fence posts. Even though he wasn't close to the border, the smell of league cats was present and made his nose twitch. He didn't like that group's reputation and he knew that every trip here put him at risk of running into one of their members. But he didn't have a choice in the matter. His father had given him a task, and he needed to see it through. With the lingering stench mixed in with garbage and smoke, it was hard to detect any scent of rogues or loners, but he knew they had to be around. They always were.
Stopping on top of a brick wall, he sat to look around the larger square of the city near the park. If he couldn't smell anyone, then he could try his eyes instead. There was a good view into neighboring alleys from here as well as the biggest green space in the area. Someone would eventually come by and he could be as patient as it took. He just hoped he wouldn't need to wait around forever.
Just like him, the Huntress had traveled from a ways away to get to the city's center. Desert sands still clung to her pelt as she slithered through the grimy streets. The she-cat didn't carry herself like a rogue: her head was up and her tail low. The Huntress was alert, but nothing more. She herself once was a part of the League, though that was long before their move to the city. Still, it shaped who she became. The Huntress carried herself like a League cat would: her poise confident, and her gaze deadly.
Her beautiful bengal pelt shimmered in the noon sun as she skirted the edge of the park. Her time in the city had come to an end, so it was time to begin navigating the alleyways to the forest. She couldn't wait. There was a surprisingly fine line between the garbage smell of the city and the sweet smells of the forest, and the fastest way was to travel to the west. She moved towards where the sun would set in just a few short hours.

Spots moved under a ray of sunlight and Colt shot to his feet. Blinking his initial surprise away, he realized that he hadn't imagined the bengal in the distance. They were skirting along the park's edge with a confident stance that made him wonder if they were actually a clan cat. The tom had yet to catch their scent, so it was possible. Still, if it was just the one cat, he could probably manage. Leaping down the wall, Colt sprinted across the thunderpath to the park, darting around the temporarily still monsters in the center. Still in his sights, once Colt reached the grassy expanse, he trailed after the cat until finally, their scent filled his senses.
The bengal's scent carried the fragrance of a she-cat and nothing to signal she was from a clan or group. Perfect. Feeling more confident himself, he quickened his pace behind her but somewhat to the side so that his black fur morphed into the shadows of shrubbery. He would alert her of his presence once they hopefully, weren't somewhere so in the open. Many rogues liked to stake a claim on this park and he didn't want to get dragged into a turf war even on his best day.
Her paws glided over the dark, hot asphalt as if she never touched the ground. She was moving with a purpose, and Colt was not the only cat to see it, but this one made himself known. His footsteps echoed off the surronding buildings as he trailed after the Huntress. The tabby's hazel optics focused on the back of her neck as he called out to her. "Hey, get outta here!" He unsheathed his claws and lashed his tail.
The Huntress stopped and glanced over her shoulder. The city cats. How revolting. "Please, you're implying that I would want to live here. In the slime. With you. Go back to your hole and never talk to me again." She watched the tom tense up and get ready to jump, but her glare made him shrink back into his skin. She knew a fighter when she saw one, and the poor thing certainly was no fighter. She unsheathed one of her claws and gave it a lick. "Good. Now run along."
The tom flattened his ears and turned around. The tom got lost in his thoughts while he walked away into the shrubbery near by. He just needed some of his buddies... then he walked right into Colt with a hiss.

Colt had watched the whole thing happen and was impressed by the she-cat's nonchalance. Even if the rogue was all bark and no bite, it was always risky to insult them. Most lived in groups and any number of cats could be lurking in the shadows. But then, he was also distracted by her words. She obviously wasn't living in the city and acted far above him. Was she a clan cat after all?
Before he could contemplate any further, the rogue tom ran into him and hissed in his face. Colt flinched back as some spit hit his cheek but otherwise passed as indifferent or at least, too busy to interact with him. "Sorry, I'm just passing through if you could..." he muttered as he tried to walk around him.
The tom rolled his eyes and pushed through Colt as he tried to walk by. "Really?" He growled and whipped around. He didn't have time for this. "Just get out of here. I don't enjoy guests on my territory."
Her ears perked up at the sound of the tom's hiss. No way he was thinking about charging her now. Still, she looked over her shoulder. She saw the rather large tom leave the bushes with anger in his step, and then the bushes kept moving. There was another one. Great. The Bengal turned completely around to face where the tom ran from the bushes. "So, is this your territory too? Am I invading your little nook of this pathetic place?"

Used to the attitude of other rogues, especially city ones, Colt was just relieved he was able to avoid a brawl. He wasn't much for fighting, as he preferred to settle his issues with words. Though, he knew rogues liked to travel in groups, so he wasn't out of deep water just yet. Speaking of such, he realized with a pang of frustration, that his cover had been blown. Now the she-cat that he'd been following, was facing the bush he was hidden in and addressing him. Sighing, the black tom stepped from its cover like a living shadow. Only his bright blue eyes stood out as he gazed at the Bengal with a confident stance.
"Actually, no. I don't call the city my home," he answered with a small laugh. "I'm guessing you don't either?" Colt was still unsure of her scent and hoped she'd at least confirm she wasn't from the league. If she was, well then he hoped his friendly greeting would be enough to keep him out of harm's way.
She raised a brow. "What a genius! You deduced that all by yourself? It's not like you could have been eavesdropping or anything, right?" Her tail swished close to the ground as she examined the newcomer. Rogues didn't usual talk like that, nor did they ever have anything resembling charm. "Please, just leave me alone, and don't follow me." She turned and continue her walk through the alley. "If you were about to tell me who you are, I don't care." Her electric blue eyes stayed ahead while she talked. "I just care that you get out of my life."

Swallowing at her harsh dismissal, Colt wondered if he should take her advice and leave her alone. A lifetime of ridicule and neglect told him to press on, however. He was used to much worse, so he could get over her attitude towards him. She was no Filly after all, and she was the worst demon he knew. With a deep breath, he followed at her heels as if she'd eagerly invited his presence. "Maybe you don't care, but I'd like to know your name," he told her in as steady a tone as he could. "And maybe why you'd come here if you don't like the city as much as you say."
So, he wasn't a pushover like the last one. The Huntress was fine with that. Some cats just needed some more convincing before they left her alone. "I come here because I have to. It's more of a keeping tabs thing. I like being in and out in no more than two days, so this conversation's been nice, but I have more important things to do." She talked without ever looking over her should as she pressed forward through the alley. The edge of the city was farther away than she wanted for this time of day, and talking to him would not help her situation.

He knew she was trying to dismiss him, but Colt saw her willingness to answer one of his questions as a reason to push on. “I understand. I come here for a similar reason.” Picking up his pace so he was closer to her side than to her heels, his eyes focused on the she-cat’s ears. If her mood should change in the wrong direction, he wanted to be aware of a possible tell. “Maybe we could trade notes? Keep tabs together.”

Trade notes? Maybe that was something she was interested in, but not at the cost of staying in the city longer than she had to. "Fine. We can share notes. Gang activity's gone up in the last stretch of summer. There's nothing notable elsewhere. There have been some nasty skirmishes, but nothing outstanding." She looked back at Colt. "I've also found some rather annoying cats who keep asking questions..."

"So you noticed that too... I was thinking the rise might have to do with the temperature cooling. The cats here are probably trying to get the most out of the green spaces now and stake a claim early for winter," Colt thought aloud. His trips to the city had only started recently so he wasn't as up to date with any alternatives to his theory though. Blue eyes studied the she-cat carefully as he thought of what information he might be able to share in return. Something about her made him believe she knew more about the city than he did, at least for now. "I'd be careful coming here if I were you. The rogues aren't too much of a concern, but I've scented some league cats farther outside of their borders. More-so than usual." Breathing in her scent again, Colt tried to pinpoint where she was from, but he was having a hard time with it. Despite knowing his questions bothered her, his curiosity was getting the best of him. "Earlier, you said you come here because you have to keep tabs. Is someone making you?" He had a hard time picturing her in a group of any kind, but it was still possible for her to be part of a gang herself.

She shook her head. She had never taken orders from anyone, and she never planned on doing so anytime soon. "No one makes me do anything. I work alone. I keep tabs because I need to be aware of my surroundings. " She tried toppled gang leader when they became too strong, but she wouldn't tell him that. It was tough work, and wasn't as successful as she liked. Most of them weren't dumb and surronded themselves with the best in the city. Sure, the best in the city wasn't particularly good, but two or three average fighters who had good chemistry was a match for anyone. "As for the League cats, I couldn't careless for them. I've gutted a few and would gladly do it again."

As he'd guessed, she wasn't taking anyone else's orders, or at least wasn't saying so. It was a relief to hear it regardless. Colt had been looking for a rogue or loner, and even if she wasn't as friendly as he would have liked, she was pretty much what he'd been seeking to a T. "Have you really?" he exclaimed as she spoke of the league cats. The comfort he'd felt around her suddenly felt threatened as he realized she had blood on her paws. He had never killed anyone--hadn't even gotten in a real fight before--so being around someone who had was concerning. But, just because she'd hurt others didn't mean she'd hurt him. After all, he was no league cat. There was no need to gut Colt unless it was out of pure entertainment because he would kindly back off at a convincing threat. "How did you even manage that?"

She shrugged. "They're all confident and all that. They think they're better than everyone else. Once your opponent thinks that, you've already one." She knocked a piece of trash aside to emphasize her point. "One quick throat bite does it. They're mortal like everyone else." She hadn't killed a League cat in a long time at this point, but that place never changed. They were always bloodthirsty. Sure, the level of bloodlust changed with the Nemesis, but their core beliefs never did. "What about you? I've told you some about me. Tell me why you're following me around."

He tensed at the question, feeling reluctant to give her an answer at first. However, remembering his assigned task--his responsibility to his family--Colt relented. "I'm part of a small gang outside of the city. Right now, we're just family, but we want to develop more; recruit some more members and maybe gain some allies," he briefly explained. "I came here for that purpose and I thought that maybe we could help each other out." So far his visits to the city had winded up in failure, and though he expected the same outcome today, a look of determination crossed his expression as he watched the she-cat.

She listened. She heard him out. Still, she laughed in his face. "Really? What makes you think that I would want to get involved with your family or whatever? I've had enough politics in my life. I don't need anymore, especially from some inconsequential upstarts. Speaking of that..." She turned back to him and gave him the prettiest smile she could muster. "I come hear to make sure no gang gets too high and mighty. I like taking them down a notch, so keep that in mind." She turned her attention back to the asphalt ahead.

A threat made directly against him was one thing, but against his family? Now that was just laughable. Now knowing there was little to gain from the she-cat other then the information she'd already given him, his pace slowed slightly. "That's too bad," he sighed. "Listen, I don't care if you don't want to work with us. We'll manage. But working against us will be the last thing you'll ever do." Although his words sounded like a threat, his tone only held disappointment. His family had no great ambitions. All they wanted was to keep what they had. Anything that could threaten that goal had little chance of working out. Colt had seen it before and he knew how it ended for their opponents. He had hoped that this she-cat would not end up as one.
"Do you know how many times I've heard that? 'But working against us will be the last thing you'll ever do.' Please. I'd be dead years ago if that were true." She looked him over again and shrugged. "I doubt you could do anything to stop me. If your whole family is just a talker like you, then I could walk through your camp." She snorted and lashed her tail. "Now, is there anything else you want to float with me, or are we going to go out separate ways?"
