He had seen the desolate look in the young cat's eyes. Her family imprisoned, pregnant, and alone, he couldn't blame her; she had the High Priest looking after her now, but she did not look any happier for it. Ghostcrown had debated his plan for a few days. He just wanted to talk to her, see if he could ease some of the fear he saw inside of her, but how could he get her comfortable enough to speak with him?
In the end, he had formed a semblance of a plan, and one morning he saw her emerge into the camp. It was time. The sleek mostly-black tom sprang to his paws and strolled casually toward the fresh-kill pile, nosing through it before he looked up and smiled warmly.
"Jetfire! I've been meaning to talk with you. My kits have been restless lately, looking for someone new to play with. Do you think you can bring out your mother's litter sometime? We can watch over them as they play together."

Jetfire went through the motions, standing by Bloodyrondos side as he spouted off the morning and evening prayers, forced smile in public, but there was little she could do to hide the desperation and fear in her eyes. Everything she did was muted, a far cry from the she-cat that had terrorized the clan with her bubbly antics for so long. She felt like the weight of her family's safety had been thrust onto her shoulders, and one mistep would cause it all to come tumbling down around her. She had left the den she was forced to share with Bloodyrondo, to find something for her siblings to eat. She had been putting off letting them try fresh-kill knowing that once they did, it was likely Bloodyrondo would take them from her to, using her own pregnancy as an excuse. However, they were growing quickly, and she wouldn't be able to put it off forever...
She had bent down nosing through the pile, when Ghostcrown spoke. She slowly lifted her head "They would like that" she replied dully before going back to her task. Bloodyrondo had been possessive over her, allowing very few cats even to speak to her "but you will need to speak to Bloodyrondo about it first" she added automatically.
"Bloodyrondo is busy running the clan," he replied dismissively, "this isn't worth taking his time. What if you let the kittens out to play alone for a while, and I let my kittens play beside them, and we see if they happen to run into each other? It's their choice then. Nothing we can do about it."
His head tilted a little with a devious grin. Now that they were up close, she looked worse than he had imagined. They hadn't been close before, but he had seen her running around the camp, full of good cheer. Where had that energy gone? Had it left with her mother or her mentor? It tugged at his heartstrings to see her so despondent.

Her ears flicked back, while Bloodyrondo hadn't forbidden the kits from playing with the others from the nursery she knew that he wouldn't be happy if he caught her spending time with another tom. As his official mate, he wouldn't allow any stains on her reputation. However, this would be in public and as long as she didn't get to close to Ghostcrown there wasn't much harm in letting the kits play with one another "After they eat I will bring them out to play before the sun goes down" she murmured picking up a hare big enough for the kits to try and making her way back to the High Priest's den. It wasn't a yes or no, just a simple statement of her own intentions. What he choose to do with that information would be up to him.
Ghostcrown smiled and let her go. He was glad to see her give in, even a little bit; it was encouraging that she had even this little bit of defiance left in her. His little flock of kittens had already started to eat back around the nursery, so he retreated to watch them until they were finished. He loved his kits fiercely, even if they thought he was ugly - that was probably a joke, at least he preferred to take it that way, what did they know?
When they were finished and it was growing darker, he led the group closer to the center of camp. "Here, play with this. I took it from Festeringfruit's thrush." He tossed a pawful of feathers in the air for them to chase.

Jetfire was gone for quite a while, long enough that Ghostcrown would probably start to wonder if she was going to show at all as the sun had begun it's descent in the sky. However after a while she emerged, a tangle of kits weaving through her paws as she started the descent down the ascending path. All of them had their pelts fluffed out and well groomed, paint carefully applied to their tiny frames despite the fact that it wouldn't last long once they started playing "Don't stray to far" she called to them as they began scattering across the clearing
Lost in play with his kittens, it was a while before he realized how late it was getting. She hadn't been too specific about when she would return, so she was probably just taking her time. The kits might be sleepy and need convincing, or they were hungrier than she expected. But more than likely, and the option he was most prone to consider, she had simply chosen not to come.
The kids were playing, so he let them keep at it; tucking his white paws beneath his chest, he waited calmly for them to tire out. He had reached out, and if she wasn't going to come, then- oh, there she was.
A cocky smile played across Ghostcrown's expression as he watched her set the kittens free. He had the grace to wait until they scattered before he called out to her; then, amiably, he greeted her.

Jetfire nodded, sitting down at a respectful distance, her tail wrapping around her paws as her eyes stayed on the kits. They were already enthralled with the feathers that had been scattered around the clearing for them to play. No doubt a ploy on Ghostcrown's part to keep them entertained so that he could talk with her. Bloodyrondo was asleep for now, but the kits had been to energetic to lay down so she had offered to take them out to play so that he could rest after a long day. He had agreed, but out in the eye of the clan she still had to be careful of the words that she was saying. Anyone could report back to him, and she had no doubts that there were cats watching her now just waiting for the chance to do just that "Yes, they were to restless and Bloodystar was tired. I thought they would enjoying getting to come out and play now that it has cooled off"
"You must know them well. They look like they're having a lovely time out here. And I'm sure Bloodystar needs his rest so he can attend to all of his new duties," he agreed mildly. Ghostcrown had a few doubts about their leader himself, but he had the good sense to keep his mouth shut about them. He wasn't going anywhere, not until his kittens were grown at the very soonest, so he needed to stay in the clan's good graces. His own feelings didn't matter anymore.
"Just between the two of us, can I get some advice? I'm still new at being a father, and I want to be a good one," he explained. "I've had some trouble getting my kittens to settle down when it's time to sleep. They just get so excited and want to keep playing all night long. Do you know any tricks to get them to be quiet and sleepy?" It was a casual conversation, an earnest question; no cat could object to him looking for a little outside help. She was raising her littermates, so it made sense she might have some tips.

Jetfire kept here eyes ahead, only stealing a quick glance at the tom that sat a respectful distance away from her watching his own kits playing in the leaves "Well you are already doing part of it, a tired kit is a sleepy kit" she smiled slightly. The game they were playing was dangerous, but thus far even if Bloodystar had been sitting right beside her nothing in this conversation was scandalous "Encourage them to get their energy out before bed, combine that with a gentle grooming or story and most of the time they will settle down. I'm glad that you have taken such an interest in raising your children" a lot of fathers tended to be absent from their kits lives, and it was refreshing to see a tom actually care about the kits that he had sired
