[ i was so excited by this that I went ahead and made a thread for them finding a baby bird xD GidgetGal ]
Dawnmemories and Ratstar had decided to do an early morning patrol together, a way to further get to know each other. The red deputy had been both looking forward to it and completely dreading it. She was young and well liked, but there had been a few cats who'd expressed their displeasure at her promotion. Now, a moon or so later, Dawnmemories still felt incredibly intimidated by Ratstar. And so nervous. Did he regret his choice? Was he taking her on a walk so he could demote her? Was this it?
So the early morning found a fidgety Dawnmemories beside the entrance to camp, waiting on Ratstar but trying very hard to be distracted by a leaf blowing through camp with the early morning breeze.
The light-brown tabby had only taken a few steps outside his den before his jaws opened wide in a loud yawn, and he leaned forward to stretch out his back. By this point, it was pretty common knowledge that the Summerclan leader wasn't exactly a morning kind of cat, but Ratstar figured that a Dawn patrol was the best way to get some alone time with someone without the fear of being interrupted. Starclan knows that Poppymask would probably try and force her way into their conversation if she found out.
Glancing around the camp, it was surprising how peacefully quiet the morning was; dew still fresh on the grass, with the occasional chirps of birdsong in the distance and the light bubble of the stream that flowed through the field. Dawnmemories, as he expected, was already up and waiting for him by the entrance, and he padded over to her with a friendly smile and dip of his head. "Mornin' Dawnmemories, ready to head out? Ya already look so wide-eyed and bushy-tailed - I wish I was more o' an early riser like ya."

"Oh," Dawnmemories meowed, shrugging and laughing with only a slightly nervous edge to it. "Yeah I've always liked mornings, the soft sun, quiet, birds, you know." Usually only Sootstep could bring out this rambling side of her and usually that was more in anger than anxiety. "Anyway, anywhere in particular you'd like to go?"
She wished very much that she sounded more assured and regal, more of a deputy to be proud of. But right now there was a sinking feeling in her chest that made her feel insecure. Made her feel like she was slipping.
"Hmm, well let's see now..." Ratstar closed his single eye to think over Dawnmemories' query, tilting his head back thoughtfully in a way that exactly mirrored what the Deputy had seen one of the elders do once. From appearance alone, it was easy to forget that he wasn't actually that much older than her - probably only a couple of moons at most. His missing eye and the blanket of old scars that covered his body were proof of just how unforgiving the twolegplace could be for even cats in the prime of their lives. A sobering thought for a cat born and raised in the relative safety of the clans.
"How 'bout the rabbit meadow?" The tom finally responded, looking rather oblivious to Dawnmemories' anxious state of mind. "There might be more hares out in the early mornin' that we could bring back t' camp."

"Oh yes, Roachpelt and Mountainsky both like hares," she mentioned, thinking of the elder and queen she'd recently grown close to. And she knew that Roachpelt was fond of Ratstar and vice versa, they even picked up each other's habits; such as the head tilt. "I'm sure they would appreciate it."
Casting a glance at Ratstar she was struck again by her respect for him. She hadn't always believed in the leader but this one was a cat she very much believed in. And a cat she wanted to believe in her. He'd seen and done a lot more than she and it meant there was wisdom there, despite their close ages.
Ratstar blinked in mild surprise when Dawnmemories remembered Roachpelt's favorite food, before his face lit up in genuine appreciation for his Deputy. "Yeah, I bet they will," he remarked, unable to hide how impressed he sounded. To anyone who hadn't made the connection between the Leader and the Elder, his reaction would've seemed a bit excessive, but a statement to how much he valued the elder himself. "Well then," he continued, gesturing towards the Deep Lands with his tail. "Would ya be so kind as to lead the way, Dawnnie?"

"Of course," Dawnmemories responded, taking the lead with her tail high. She felt pleased by the nickname, though it wasn't common in the clans Ratstar and Roachpelt seemed ton use them more often than actual names. To have one herself made her heart warm. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad. Ratstar seemed to be in a good mood, and certainly he wouldn't have been if she had done something wrong?
