[[ cookie, I thought we could do something with Nib and Brownie <3 ]]
Nib was an emotional kit. It wasn't hard to see. And she was jealous too. Afraid, always, to lose the love of her mother. Afraid, always, of the terrible dreams and memories.
And today, after yet another nightmare of a storm and a deep terrible sense of loss, Nib had distanced herself from the her mother's foster kits and even Brownie herself. She'd found herself a spot behind the makeshift nursery where she studied a beetle's progress over the sandy ground. Bitterness and hurt dripped from her, the tears hitting the dirt and make the trek all more treacherous for the poor insect.
Brownie's kits were off playing, and she watched them from a distance while conversing with another queen. From the corner of her eye she could see the adopted little ones and she was happy that they were all getting along. In a break in the conversation, Brownie searched for Nib, wondering if she was enjoying the game. But there was no Nib. In a brief moment of panic, the she-cat whipped her head around, eyes wild. "Nib!" she cried out, jumping to her paws and twisting around to search the nursery. No kitten. Brownie was horrified that something had gone wrong. She forced herself to calm down long enough to scent the air. It hadn't rained - this wasn't last time. Not the same thing at all. She had to tell herself that.
When she opened her mouth, Brownie focused on the familiar scent that she considered her favorite in the world. There, behind the nursery. The brown queen rushed around it to find Nib crying and alone. Immediately, the queen rushed over, showering Nib in aggressive licks. "I was looking for you," she said in between, voice wavering as her adrenaline began to seep away. "What's wrong my Niblet?"

Brownie appearing would usually have raised Nib's spirits. Her mother was all the best things in the world to Nib, but today nothing happened. The ache and sadness was still there. Nib couldn't answer her mother, she just shrugged and buried her face in mother's fur, letting herself cry louder now that she'd already been forgotten. The beetle managed his escape and disappeared from view, no doubt thankful not to have drowned in the saltwater that had rained down on him.
Brownie's heart was wrenched out of her body at the lack of reply. She became frantic, checking on Nib between every comforting lick but the situation still wasn't changing. She was a terrible mother. What had she done? "I am so sorry," she cried, curling her entire body around Nib in case she tried to move away. "What can I do?" This was the second most painful moment of her life after losing Powder.
