Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"So Littlestar got possessed by the Moon Goddess and turned the Sun God to dust, rattled off some sort of prophecy that had absolutely nothing to do with me so I tuned it out, then she lost one of her lives by passing out and falling off of the tree like a mousebrain. While she was passed out I think Flamingstar declared war on Sunclan because of some missing she-cat? I wasn't really paying attention by that point. So I found my family, and offered them a place in Swiftclan. My adopted brother Ghostcrown just became a father so he had to decline, but I met Windskip at the border at sunrise and brought her home with me...where we found you, huffing and puffing about my disappearance like a mad man. Are we done now?"
Firetooth sat beside his mother in the shabby, makeshift hollow that currently served as Chimerastar's den - clearly, the Swiftclan leader hasn't put much effort into it, like everything else in Swiftclan - staring bored at the tabby tom in question as he droned off the events of the night before, along with a highly detailed plan of heresy, blasphemy, and revenge that stretched back moons...all of the way back to the prominent, nasty collar of scars that he wore proudly around his throat. Tired and cranky after nearly an entire day without sleep, the Medicine Cat leaned on his mother's shoulder as he let out another yawn, opening his jaws wide to be as deliberately rude as possible to his leader. Frankly, this entire exercise was just plain annoying; he wouldn't have even bothered telling Chimerastar if he wasn't sure that the leader would just find out from one of the Forest clans anyway. At this point, he didn't even care about whatever lecture or punishment the darling son of Lightningswift had in store for him, it was insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
He had cursed and killed a god. He had saved Autumngossamer and his mother, and possibly countless other Queens and kits in Sunclan. Even in his exhausted state, Firetooth couldn't resist grinning wickedly at the thought. He was going to be a legend, and not even Chimerastar would be able to take that away from him.
"Oh, is that all?" he asked curtly. "I thought maybe you had done something incredibly stupid and dangerous. I thought you were starting fights or meeting with a forbidden lover, I thought you were self-destructive, I thought you were grieving," he shifted to stare hard into the other tom's eyes, "but I never thought you hated this clan so much you would try and kill us all. What the hell were you thinking?"
He paced in the confines of the den, the thick fur on the back of his neck bristling. He was furious: angry that this had all been kept from him, angry that his medicine cat had made so many terrible decisions, angry that he didn't see it was coming, angry that Firetooth had the guts to come back here and pretend he had done nothing wrong, to act like this was a waste of time, to be proud of making a decision that could single-handedly ruin all of them. Now he had to deal with the aftermath and he was unprepared.
"You're a medicine cat, Firetooth, or did you forget that?" he ground out slowly. "Like it or not, you're an important cat now, and you can't make decisions like this on your own. What you do reflects on all of us. When you decided you want glory and fame, to become a god-slayer, did you stop and think about the rest of us? Your selfishness will destroy this clan. What do you think SunClan is going to do now? Do you think they'll tamely give up and go back to hiding in their own little corner of the world, forget this all happened? Did you even think about them, or were you too wrapped up in your own self-importance? I'll tell you what's going to happen." He leveled his half-gaze at Firetooth, cold and dark. "They're going to march down here and demand your execution. What do you want me to tell them, Firetooth? Should I ask my group to fight a clan three times our size, and tell them their slaughter is for good reason because now you'll be famous? Should I hand you over to them, and let my clan go without a medicine cat, so the next enemy or sickness we face will wipe us clean off the earth? I hope you enjoyed your glory," Chimerastar snarled, "now I have to choose who dies because of it."
Breezestep watched the pair quietly. It was not her place to intrude upon their conversation, and now that she saw the leader's fury, she wasn't sure she should be listening at all. Her son was insolent as ever, she saw that now; even if he had changed, he still had too much disrespect for other cats. Maybe she should have expected that, and in any other circumstances she wouldn't have minded, but now her coat prickled with unease that Chimerastar wouldn't let her join the clan.
The tom let out a bark of dry laughter, sitting up straight to face down the leader eye-to-eye as he did so. The Medicine Cat had been expecting one of Chimerastar's famous lectures, but this... "Oh, this is just rich, coming from you. Look at you, trying to be responsible for once in your life, meanwhile you're making so many assumptions here it's a wonder you aren't just a hind-end with legs. Don't you dare get so high and mighty as to lecture me, Chimerastar. I've been a Medicine Cat practically since birth, do you think I'm as stupid as a spoiled, slacker, leader's kit, as to not realize the potential consequences of what I was doing? I nearly died, for Starclan's sake! I'm not so suicidal as to do that for something as trivial as glory. I don't need glory, I never have! I've been 'the special one' all my life, and I've hated it!" It was almost a slap in the face, that the former Waterclan cat had so spectacularly failed to see what Firetooth had accomplished, and why he had done it. Was his brain so water-clogged, that he actually had to spell it out for him?
Part of him wanted to march right up and claw Chim across the face, but even now he could feel his mother's quiet, judging gaze resting on him. No. He couldn't lose his temper here...or at least more than he already had, not in front of Breezestep. She had taken a serious risk following him here, she wouldn't be able to go back. And she'd done it because she trusted him, and believed he had changed. Believed in him the same way he himself had believed in Autumngossamer. Belief was a powerful thing, wasn't it?
Firetooth paused, taking in a deep breath as he forced himself to relax. Avoiding his leader's eyes, he instead turned to stare out of the hollow at the sunrise. "You can think that I'm rash, or impulsive, you can even strip away my title if you want, I don't really care. But if you seriously think I went to such extreme lengths solely for my own gain, it says a lot more about you than about me. Tell me, if you're so smart, what would you have done? If a Queen you barely knew came to you, and told you about how she was made pregnant against her will, was mistreated by the leaders of her clan during her pregnancy, drugged, and finally had her own kits either killed or stolen from her. And the culprit was a creature so powerful that even Starclan dare not mess with it. Tell me, what would you do? Would you even believe her, Chimerastar? Well I did. Because when I looked into her eyes, I saw a sorrow and grief so powerful it shook me to my core. So powerful that I was willing to die twice over; I never expected for Sunclan to change their ways. I was fully prepared to let Sunclan capture and execute me after that gathering, if it meant she and her family could escape to freedom. And if it comes down to it, I'll die for Swiftclan if I have to. Medicine Cats aren't all that hard to find...or raise, for that matter. Autumngossamer would help train one in my honor or something...but I wasn't about to let a mother suffer, I've seen far too much of that already. But hey, at least you don't have to make any tough decisions now. Starclan forbid you make an actual decision for this clan."
His words stung, but the leader held strong. He was learning to hold his tongue, one tedious day at a time, and this was a situation where it would prove essential to keep as calm as possible. Each personal slight made his claws dig deeper into the thin fibers of his nest, rendering them into useless scraps he would waste time replacing later, but he restrained himself. For once in his life, he lowered his tone.
"Consequences?" His voice was deadly soft as he met his medicine cat's eyes. "You thought about the consequences? So you knew SunClan would come down here, looking for revenge. You knew they would come down here asking your head. You knew we would be in an impossible position: hand you over and we'd never be respected again, not by other clans and not by each other. But we can't fight SunClan. You know they're ruthless. They'll cripple us from the outside, force us into an even weaker position, and then swoop in and slaughter us all when we try and defend you. You thought about the consequences, you knew cats would be hurt, murdered, in your name, but you did this anyway."
"You chose one sad story, one queen, over your entire clan." Chim spoke slowly, his words dripping with fury. "You had a responsibility to this clan, to protect this clan, and you let us all down. You didn't worry about this clan, you worried about your own life. You think you're brave because you're willing to die? Because you're willing to suffer a few seconds of agony? You've betrayed all of us by choosing an outsider over your own clan. I don't care if you wanted glory or if you wanted justice, I don't care what emotional entanglement you were trapped in, your job is to put your clan before everything else. You failed that, and now you'd rather sit here and insult me than think about what you've done."
He turned away from his medicine cat, shaking his head heavily. "Well, you'll have plenty of time for reflection soon. When you bury the bodies of your clanmates, you can be the one to explain to their families why they're gone. You can tell them the truth: that you chose a foreign queen over them. You can tell the cats healing in your den that you thought it was more important to defend one cat than your clan, and you brought the wrath of SunClan down upon them, and that's why they'll never walk again, or never see, or any other of a thousand ailments. Only then can you stop and think if any of it was truly worth it."
Firetooth blanked, his eyes wide in shock at the intensity of the words leaving his leader's mouth. Was this the same Chimerastar that he had spent the last several moons with? Did he even know his leader at all? The Medicine Cat was shaking with fury by the end of Chim's speech, but still standing his ground nonetheless. As he caught his breath, a chuckle escaped his mouth. A dry, tired, pitiful laugh.
"Ah, I finally see where our miscommunication lies. I honestly can't blame you on that one, a lot of cats fail to understand where a Medicine Cat's loyalty is supposed to lie. Most cats see us as extensions of warriorhood, a warrior who just so happens to be trained to only heal their clanmates. Our loyalty should lie solely with our clan, as any warrior would. But that's not exactly true. And you can go ask Greythorn, Fawnheart, or whoever else you want, the answer remains the same; a Medicine Cat isn't supposed to be loyal to their clan. We are loyal to everyone's suffering. That is the mission given to us by Starclan. It's why we aren't supposed to have mates, or kits; because we need to treat every single one of our patients as if we were saving the life of our mate and kits. Medicine Cats don't live in the same world as the rest of the clans. In theory, your points are valid; if it was you, or any other warrior who did this. It is not the warrior code, to protect kits regardless of the clan they're born? Well, it's in the Medicine Cat code not to turn a blind eye to anyone who is suffering. I did my job, my duty. And I will never apologize for it, because if they're injustice in the world, everyone suffers for it. And if you seriously think thing's would be better had I done nothing at all, you are very. very. wrong."
"Isn't it also your job to prevent harm? Isn't your first duty to do no harm before you even consider healing?" Chim glanced back at him scornfully. "Cats are going to get hurt because of your decision. I don't consider that doing no harm. By saving one cat, you're killing others," he said simply.
His tail switched to and fro. "Your queen wasn't even suffering. Was she hurt? Was she bleeding or sick? Was she afflicted by any wound that required a medicine cat's touch? She was grieving, maybe, or just plain bitter. Your actions couldn't alleviate that, your actions weren't healing, so don't pretend it's part of your medicine cat code to protect her."
