One moment his claws were locked securely around the thrush's body as its wings beat at his face, and the next they were falling. Its cries rang in his ears as he took a step backward and stumbled off the tower of rocks built up by the river, and they tumbled backward together; Summershadow refused to let go of his prey until they hit the water, and the icy claws snatched at his fur and stole his breath. The dark-furred tom gasped as he floundered toward the surface, watching helplessly as his thrush spun away in the current.
"No!" he yowled, plunging after it, though his abysmal swimming skills were barely enough to keep him afloat.
