Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Steepfall was getting older and didn't want to turn out a grumpy and lonely old man like his uncle Chimerastar. So... on a whim, really, he decided to ask Ophelia on a date. He was expecting to be turned down. For starters, he wasn't exactly pleasing to look at, not near the same scale that she was. His hooked, crow-like muzzle, harsh features, tense shoulders and simple black fur, he'd always been deterrent to other cats even before he opened his mouth. And when he did speak, he tended to bring out the worst in those around him, always bickering, calling them out, materializing tension out of nowhere.
Imagine his surprise when she said yes.
So, there he sat, much too early for his own good. He gave his shoulder a couple nervous strokes. They were supposed to meet at dawn but the sky was dark gray and the birds had not yet starting singing. Truthfully he knew almost nothing about Ophelia. They had hardly even talked before he had asked her out. He just thought she was pretty and seemed nice and maybe, just maybe, they could get along. At the very least maybe he'd make a friend. Or maybe he'd get his heart broken, which scared him less, as at least he knew that feeling better.
(feel free to make him wait until the actual time or show up early like he did xD)
I almost asked who I was supposed to be bringing to this thread lol. It's kind of in the title though sooo What was our plot again? I forgot lol my bad! Jadie
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ophelia was late leaving the nursery where still resided, even though her kits were all apprentice age now. She didn't feel fit to become a warrior just yet, especially since she has no hunting or fighting skills to speak off. The she-cat is content to babysitting and helping care for the few kits that SwiftClan has while learning more and more about clan life.
While she was late to the little meeting, her son, Badgerpaw, was on his way back in from the morning hunt. The multicolored tom carried a sparrow in his jaws when he spotted the nervous looking Steepfall near the entrance to their mickshift camp.
Steepfall drummed his claws against the ground as he counted the minutes tick by. The sunrise had passed by just moments ago, meaning that Ophelia was late. He tried to tell himself that he should not be disappointed but that was easier said than done. He'd done a lot of prep work for this date but he tried to tell himself that at least he'd have a traditional WaterClan breakfast out of it. That alone would be nice, right? He hadn't gone through the effort in more moons than he could remember...
The arrival of the apprentice jarred him from his thoughts. It seemed the morning hunting patrol was already making its way back. Was it that late already? He sighed and got to his paws without saying a work to the apprentice, intent on going back to bed for another couple of hours - screw the breakfast - when he nearly ran headfirst into his date. Good thing Steepfall's fur was black; he blushed bright red. He gave Ophelia a very awkward smile, "Uh, hi."
"Sorry! Kits were being nosy and wouldn't let me out. Not even mine they still wanna know where I'm going!" Ophelia felt awful about leaving him standing here, but she was glad she caught him before he could make off anywhere and think she abandoned him. A red blush covered her face, making the exchange even more suspicious about what the two were up too. A nosy cat would have a field day with learning they were going on a date.
The surprise though was that Badgerpaw was there, staring at them with confusion on his face. She didn't leave camp often or hang out with just one cat or another. Ophelia stuck to camp, lounging and socializing with groups of cats, not just one at a tie unless it was one of her kits or a fellow queen. So this was a true surprise from the apprentice, especially since the warrior seemed to have been waiting for his mother. "Mom?" He questioned what was going on, cautious about what in the world this tom had in store for his dear mother.
"Oh, that's alright..." He replied as Badgerpaw came up to the pair. He looked at him curiously but with his hooked nose and permanent glare it was easy to think he was giving the apprentice the cold shoulder even when that was not the case, "Your mother and I are going out for breakfast," The black-furred answered honestly, to him that was a perfectly normal thing to do, and he wasn't exactly trying to hide anything, "So... if you wouldn't mind, we really should get going. There's no better time to fish than the moment the sun hits the water and we're already running behind." It wasn't meant to be a slight toward Ophelia's lateness, but, again, he was easy to misinterpret.
Badgerpaw was still questioning the tom and why he wanted to hang with his mother of all cats. She couldn't even fish for herself, the queen had no idea how to hunt or fight. So..why was she going hunting with Steepfall. "Maybe I should come too? Mom's never fished before so I can help show her pointers if need be. Plus it'd be a good chance for me to practice my own skills." He didn't realize this was a date, didn't even glance at his blushing mother who, if she had hands, would have done smacked herself in the face in embarrassment at how oblivious her son could be.
Ophelia hadn't been on a date or even expressed interest in any tom since she'd joined the clan back when she was pregnant. So it was no wonder that Badgerpaw didn't realize what she and Steepfall were doing. The poor kit was just looking out for his mother, sweet thing he was. But this was a date, a date she hadn't told either fo her kits about and hadn't planned on it until she was sure this would go further than a date or two. Why get their hopes up or their concern up if it wasn't meant to be? Clearly, that wasn't going to work through.
(he's crashing the date lol. Someone gonna have to tell the poor apprentice his mom is going on a date and not just out to hunt lol)
"Uhhh..." Steepfall looked to Ophelia, sort of expecting her to do something about this, but, upon seeing what was clearly embarrassment on her face, he felt his cheeks flush too and had to look away. She was too cute.
Oh right, Badgerpaw, he would have to do something about him, "... sure." Wait, what we he doing? No, no, no he couldn't let the apprentice join them, he had only prepped enough materials for two cats and desperately wanted to privacy with his date, "I mean, sure, it would be nice if you came, but I've got it under control. I can't imagine you have had a lot of experience fishing and would just get in the way."
There, that should do it, but Steepfall realized moments after he finished his statement that he had effectively called Badgerpaw a bother in front of his own mother no less. Shoot, "I didn't mean it like that... I'm sure you are great at fishing, I, uh, we don't...
Omg I love this it's too funny. Kids gonna realize his mistake and be a total mess and not able to look either of them in the eyes for weeks lol Jadie
Badgerpaw just narrowed his eyes, taking the other tom's words as a challenge. "I'm great at fishing! I'll prove it." He leads the way then out of camp, not caring that he had no supplies or that his mother had literally just flopped on the ground in total embarrassment. He was mad that this warrior didn't think he could do it. He went hunting with his brother all the time. The other tom practically lived in the water so they'd make days out of it! Ophelia loves to fish, and he should know since he and Otterfish bring her some after ever hunt and she downs it like it'd swim away. So how dare this tom. "I'll show you how it's done. Mom knows I'm a greater fisher, right mom?"
Poor Ophelia couldn't handle her son. She'd never been able to tell either boy no in their lives. Thinking they needed to explore, learn, and figure things out, especially since all she could teach them were manners and grooming. She had lived her whole life inside and knew nothing about clan life or hunting or even fishing, so she encouraged them to learn about all of those things. So she really couldn't tell him no, could she? Her face was truly red, and risking a glance from on the ground in a heap of embarrassment, she realized that Steepfall wasn't in a much better state. "Um..sweetheart I really don't think..."
"Oh I'm sure you are..." Steepfall sighed with just a touch of sarcasm because, really, what did Badgerpaw know about fishing? He was barely even an apprentice while Steepfall had been WaterClan born and raised. His primary diet had been fish his entire life even after he left the Clan and became a rogue. He wasn't just good, he was fantastic, and competitive, he'd put Badgerpaw in his place, maybe even make him cry...
But then he heard Ophelia's embarrassed mew and his ears flicked back. He'd had to keep his nature in check if he didn't want this date to be ruined anymore than it already had been. Play it cool, Steepfall. You've changed, "Well, let's go, I guess.
~
Steepfall lead what was now a patrol up to the lake's edge. This was his favorite spot fo SwiftClan's current stretch of land due to the forgotten concrete slabs - excellent sunning spots - and half-sunken dock, which made it great for fishing, swimming and relaxing in general. It was a beautiful, sunny day, but hot for a black-furred cat like himself. Thankfully, the fish he was hunting would require him to be fully submerged in the murky waters.
"I've been baiting a certain fish for awhile, you see. So - Badgerpaw - you need to be very careful and not get in the water until I say so. This is one of the hardest fish that there is to catch, it's even bigger than you are, and I won't have you messing this up."
(omg she'd love it if he was competitive, especially with her kits cus then he's interacting with them and showing her that he doesn't care that he'd be their stepdad cus he likes them and her Jadie)
Ophelia really couldn't believe her luck or her kit. Okay, no she could. Badgerkit could be pretty oblivious when it came down to it, but his heart was always in the right place. she stopped right at the edge of the waterway, gazing upon it with wonder. She hadn't explored much since coming to the clans, having been too busy raising her two kits and learning the ways of the clan to go out exploring. But this, this was beautiful. "You seem to know this area pretty well, Steepfall. Do all cats know all the territories like this?" She chanced a glance at her son and nearly lost it at his scrunched up face at being told to stay back like some kit. He was just a kit though, only recently promoted and already thinking himself as big and strong as the full-grown, senior warriors of the group. It was cute, but she never had the heart to give him a reality check, or even how to go about doing so. Badgerpaw took a seat next to where she'd curled up in the nice warm sun. Hopefully, he'd be allowed in the water soon or he'd burn up with his orange and black fur. Already, he could feel himself starting to melt. The hot sun caused him to become ansty as he waited for the older tom to give the okay. And when he did, Badgerpaw was fully prepared to go racing in there and get three fish just to show Steepfall he could do it too.
"No, not really. Most cats tend to stay within their own borders, rarely leaving. SwiftClan is an exception to the rule," Steepfall replied, stalking up to the edge of the water, his pawsteps as silent as a ghost. When he replied his voice was much quieter, but still clear enough for Ophelia to hear, "Scouting the land is just in my nature. I lived my moons as a rogue and having a bigger picture of the territory has saved my tail more times than I can count. Now, Badgerpaw..."
He turned his attention to the intruding apprentice and motioned toward the water, "Some fish make dens just like cats, but instead of using leaves and feathers, they use mud and rocks, usually around the water's edge in a mudbank, like right here. I'm going to go into the water and pull one of these fish out; you need to be ready to drag it onto land once I have it in position. Do you think you can do that?"
Ophelia smiled at the words, and then it soften when the tom continued to speak with her so. She'd heard of many cats seeking new lovers after the previous one died or left in general, and some of those stories included the new lover not wanting anything to do with the past one's children. The ex-kittypet would have none of that and so she was pleased to see Steepfall interacting with Badgerpaw, even if the tom hadn't planned on it. A soft hmm left her as she watched her son carefully step into the waters. He walked on his tip toes, back arched and feet pulled up high for each step as though he was afraid of messing up. It was cute, but she did manage somehow, to hold back her laughter. "Careful now. And listen to what your told." Her words were rewarded with an eye roll, one she knew meant that he didn't need the reminder. But she wouldn't see Steepfall's hard work ruined by the ruly apprentice.
Badgerpaw narrowed his eyes as his paws stepped into the cool water, it was refreshing compared to the hot stone he'd been resting on. His mother seemed perfectly happy to remain in the sun and just watch. So that left him to show off what he could do, even if it meant he had to listen to Steepfall like some kit. "Yeah, yea I can do that. Bet I'll catch it before you can blink." It was a dumb bet, but still he puffed out his chest and stared the older tom down/ Whether her realized it or not, a part of him know that the two were competing for his mother's attention. And as her kit, he didn't want to lose. It was childish, and he didn't realize why he felt the need to do so, but he did.
Steepfall had grown terrifyingly serious the moment he and Badgerpaw entered the water. He didn't react at all to the apprentice's bet, totally focused on the prey that he knew was not far from his grasp. Silently he pressed toward the gap in the sea-wall, cutting through the water like a snake, coming to a halt only inches away from the opening. He did not speak to Badgerpaw but, using universal cat language with his tail tip, he told him to, Stay where you are.
The black-furred tom stood absolutely still for several pain-staking minutes, his bright green eyes on the murky brown water. The key to fishing was patience and this was something that the former WaterClan Warrior had mastered. Then, in the blinked of an eye, he lunged forward and was totally submerged under the water. For a split second it was nothing but a few ripples but then the real battle started as Steepfall pulled out a fish that was easily the same size if not bigger than Badgerpaw himself. Mouth full of the prey, Steepfall was unable to communicate verbally, so instead he just shoved the wriggling figure at Badgerpaw with the expectation that the apprentice would latch onto it and then the two of them drag it out of the water.
