Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Hey! So in the past people have asked me about how I develop my characters so today I made this character development guide about my whole process. It is A LOT of work so feel free to find the questions and topics that help you the most!
I think in rping it's really important to develop our characters over time. To me, it's important to work on the character just as much, if not more than we work on the story.
If you're proud of how you developed your character you're welcome to post in this thread, but that's not required! You're all totally free to use this information towards your character development, I hope this helps!
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT GUIDE If you follow everything in this guide I guarantee you that you will have a memorable and amazing character. This IS effort, this isn’t a character you will easily discard, but likely one you will hold onto for some time. This is all about making a character you can be proud of and one that you develop, love, and share amazing roleplays with.
PRO TIP: Have over 15 characters? Try combining two characters' personalities and various creative elements together to create an even better one! Sometimes combining two average characters can make a well rounded interesting person.
ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS
What are 3 fears your character has?
What is their primary motive? TIP: What does the character want? What happens if they don’t get what they want? Until we know what a character wants we don’t know what the character is like. Until we know what the stakes are readers don’t care about what the character wants.
What does their voice sound like?
TIP:Ever notice that if you read a quote from a character you can hear it in their voice? A voice is the soul of a character.,readers might not know the voice you hear, but it’s important that you as the writer know what your character sounds like.
What is one flaw your character doesn’t know they have?
If your character had a theme song what would it be? TIP:Sometimes we don’t “feel” in the mood to write a certain character. Having a theme song will help put you in the right headspace to write them.
If you're still having trouble ask yourself these additional questions! Are they optimistic or pessimistic? How do they display affection? How do they want to be seen by others? What haunts them? What is their obsession? If they could change one thing about themselves what would it be? How do they treat someone better than them? How do they treat someone worse than them? How do they respond to threat? Are they more likely to fight with their fists or words? How do they perceive strangers? How would they like to die? What do they think is the worst thing that can be done to a person? What is their view on freedom?
EXPLORE YOUR CHARACTER
List three characters from media that are like your character TIP: Anytime you feel you’re writing out of character look back at the characters that are like them or inspired them. This will help keep you from straying too far from how your character would act.
Write at least five fun facts about your character that the roleplayer doesn’t initially know about them. TIP:This allows for your character to have natural quirks, interests outside of being a warrior and feel more well rounded and interesting.
List at least two activities your character is likely to do on any daily basis besides combat training and hunting. Or if it’s a healer besides medical practices and helping others. TIP: Fighting and hunting roleplays can get repetitive fast and creating open threads can be difficult. Try and think ahead of time what your character can be doing that isn’t a typical cookie cutter start. This will make any roleplay involving this character automatically more unique.
NERVOUS QUIRKS
Every character has a nervous quirk, choose a nervous quirk unique to your character! This can be a great way to show anxiety, expose your characters emotions, and foreshadow your character lying.
