Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
This was the third day in a row Viperstream had found prey strewn around the forest floor. Rabbits, voles, any something he couldn't even recognize, were shredded into ribbons. But that wasn't the strange thing about it. They weren't the carcasses of a predator's prey, there were no bite marks or pooled blood in one place associated with feasting. Just body party parts littered. It was almost as if a tornado rushed through the area. The smell of the rotting corpses was unbearable, almost causing him to vomit. Luckily for him, he hadn't eaten anything yet that morning. The past two days he shrugged it off to just a case of wrong place, wrong time for these poor creatures but for it to happen for a third time, it couldn't have been an accident. Someone or something was killing them off in a gruesome manner. But what would do something like that. Viperstream figured the culprit would have to fast and big enough to pull something like this off. Under all of the blood, he couldn't smell anything else. In all of his time in SpringClan, he had never witnessed something like this before. For the first time in a long time, he wasn't sure what he needed to do. If this went on long enough, prey would become scarce and a famine could ensue.
Hmm...I might need some help with this, he thought to himself as he followed the patrol path back to camp. But who would be able to solve something like this in a timely manner. A name hit him only moments later. Harewhisker. From their first encounter, he had gotten the sense that she was even more observant than he was and would be able to spot even the smallest of details. Yes, that would probably be a good place to start. Finally a mission he give them and an opportunity for him to see one of the Trusted in action. His fur itched with anticipation. Finally entering the camp, he made his way toward the warrior's den. This time of day, the she-cat should be around.
The large Main Coon was darting in and out of the warrior's den, checking for where the source of the draft was coming from. Harewhisker had felt oddly chilly the past couple of nights and had a hunch that the cold was entering through a little hole somewhere. Her head remained down even as a familiar scent drifted toward her, thoughts focused on her work. It wasn't until the cat was close that she threw a casual, "Is there a problem?" behind her, eyes still scanning the den.
"Actually, yes, there is," Viperstream responded as he watched her work. He wasn't a stickler for respect when it came to interacting with his clanmates but he did expect some level of professionalism. He'd let it slide, this time at least. Besides, he was going to her for her assistance with something, not that she would decline the inquiry, but he would rather not sour their working relationship. "Is what you're looking for that much of a pressing matter, Harewhisker?"
Harewhisker caught the edge of something in Viperstream's voice, but it was his words that made her head finally turn away from what she'd been focusing on. There was a problem! Finally something for her to do besides sniff around camp for little activities. "Not anymore," she stated simply, not realizing her deputy's displeasure. Her eyes briefly slid across him, analyzing his appearance for hints about what was going on. If her gaze lingered a little long on his beautiful blue eyes, she wasn't consciously aware of it. Something was definitely bothering him and she wondered what it was. Harewhisker scented him and her eyes opened a bit wider when the barest bit of fox drifted across her senses. There were no injured cats in the camp, so obviously no patrol had come back from a fight. "This seems much more interesting. Let's hear it then Viperstream. What have you come to me for?"
The tom sighed before sharing his findings. "Not many patrols have been sent out recently, but there's something in the forest that may prove to be a problem for the clan. Over these past few days, I've come across dead prey throughout the woods. And its not from them being eaten by something, they were killed for entertainment it seems," he explained to the Trusted. "I have my suspicions as to what it could be that's doing the killings but I want to be sure about it. I need help finding out what's responsible for this and you seem the capable for this mission." Of course, the two of them weren't going to confront the creature themselves but rather find where it resides and return with a larger party to either flush it out of their territory or terminate it. "Are you up for the task?"
Her eyes widened in excitement the longer the deputy spoke. This was a doozy! "Of course I am," Harewhisker replied, tail beginning to flick as her boredom wore off. "Shall we go now? And er - perhaps we need Bravebear or Reaperkiss as well?" Honestly she was ready to go and didn't want to waste time hunting the other Trusted down, but she realized the importance of getting to know them for future tasks. Still, she hoped Viperstream would just decide to leave immediately.
He shook his head. "No need for them just yet. The primary goal right now is to just find the culprit. Once we do that, we'll go back out and with more warriors to deal with it." He nodded once. "But, yes, let's get this show going, shall we," he meowed as he turned to head back toward the camp entrance. "I'll show you where I last found the corpses and we'll go from there." Viperstream could appreciate the she-cat's enthusiasm but his instincts told him this would prove to be a rather difficult endeavor. He suppressed a shudder. "Let's go."
Somehwere deep in the forest amber eyes locked on its next target...
Harewhisker nodded at Viperstream and took off behind him, allowing him to take the lead since she had no clue where they were going. Instead, the she-cat began to look around as they walked. After his words, the territory was beginning to feel ominous. She was both repulsed and excited.
Viperstream led them through forest to the location he had last seen the most recent bodies, or rather what was left of them. The smell of iron wasn't as strong as before but the stench of rotting flesh was stronger was stronger than ever as they got approached the crime scene. Stopping and turning toward Harewhisker, he stated, "Here we are. Does anything stand out to you?" He figured he missed his best chance of finding anything would have been when he first came upon the site, but he wasn't sure how long ago it happened. Maybe another set of eyes would see something he missed.
The Trusted scrunched her nose in distaste. The smell was horrid and she wondered what was going to meet her when she reached the source. And then they were there. She shook her head at the sight of the discarded carcasses. This was extremely disrespectful and a waste of their clan's food source. Harewhisker raised her head and met Viperstream's gaze. "Anything besides the utter lack of conscience, you mean?" she asked, voice ringing with displeasure. Even though she didn't want the scent in her nose, Harewhisker knew she needed to breathe in everything she could. She approached the bodies and circled them, trying to get a picture in her mind from every angle.
The she-cat noted the first thing she noticed and shared it with her deputy. "There are a lot of bodies here," she said, eyes roving the scene. "Whatever did this has to be an expert hunter." Then her eyes locked onto something stuck in the blood of one of the shredded rabbits. Harewhisker rushed to it and didn't even think about her next action. She reached directly into the guts with her paw and hooked her claw into the clump, bringing it back out of the sticky mass. "Viperstream, come look at this. What does this look like to you?" It was a clump of red fur. She could just make out the color in small spots that weren't covered in blood.
'Besides that," Viperstream responded as Viperstream looked around the scene again, occasionally glancing over to Harewhisker to see what her thought process was. However, he didn't expect anything new to surface. He was no slouch when it came to investigations but this was proving a mystery. Perhaps he was losing his touch?
So it came as somewhat of a relief when Harewhisker, noticed something and called him over. Padding toward her, one thing stuck out to him - the color. Red. The tom grinned nervously, a rare but bad habit of his. "Of course it's that...," he mumbled under his breath before reaching the Trusted. Looking it over to confirm what he thought, he nodded. "Looks like a tuft of fox fur to me" So it was just as he thought. "What do you think it is?" he asked looking at her to see if she had a differing answer for the discovery.
Harewhisker nodded, meeting his gaze solemnly. "Fox for sure - unless you know any sadistic gingers around here." She wished she could get a better scent off of it but the metallic smell was too overpowering. The Trusted dropped the clump and looked away from Viperstream at the scene again, hoping something new could come up. "Have you found anything else like this? Or seen any sign of a fox around?"
A brief smirk crossed as one SunClan cat's name came to mind. She was a nasty, but not this kind of nasty, he thought as he looked around the area again and he shook his head. "Haven't seen anything like it here or at any of the other locations. I suggest we head back to camp and report our findings to Thistlestar." He had an itching feeling like he knew they were missing something but he couldn't place what it was. Turning toward the direction of camp, something red briefly streak off in the distance, disappearing into the underbrush. "Actually, we might have a lead," he mentioned over his shoulder.
She raised her eyebrow at Viperstream's sudden change of heart. "And what might that be?" she asked before she heard rustling from a little ways off. Her large head jerked sharply to the side. Oh. Harewhisker quickened her steps and came to the tom's side so she could speak quieter. "I saw it. But we can't go get backup without leading it to camp, can we." Her voice didn't really hold a question. It didn't hold defeat either. This was exciting - the danger, the chase. Her tail flicked.
He shook his head, considering the options "We will need to find out where it's holed up first before that happens." That sounded easier said than done anyway. Foxes are unpredictable creatures, especially if they're in a mad state like this. As the fox, trailed off into the distance, Viperstream turned his attention to Harewhisker. "I don't think it's noticed us this, but I'm not too sure. From here on, though, we'll follow behind and monitor it's movements. Do you have any other suggestions before we get moving?"
Harewhisker nodded her head no. As clever as she was, Viperstream was in a higher position for a reason. She might argue that this point was moot for other clans, but seeing the tom in action, Harewhisker held him in a higher regard than she did others. "We'll go with your plan."
It ran through the forest with no regard of what it ran into. Bare bush limbs reached out to the creature and tore away patches of fur and sometimes, if they were determined enough, patches of flesh as well. It didn't care about that. All it had in mind was to find the next living thing and rip it limb from limb just like the rest. Unfortunately, for it though, nothing appeared to be around to dismember, but it still continued it's one mission.
