For the last few weeks Fairytalepaw had been looking healthier than he ever had. Because of his inability to feel pain or any nerves he had a tendency to pull out his fur and accidentally cut himself too deep when scratching at an inch. But ever since he was made a medicine cat apprentice he had been more attentive on his appearance.
However after the ceremonies were announced Brakewings replaced him with Darkpaw as a medicine cat apprentice. He was told that he would become a medicine cat apprentice once Darkpaw got her medicine cat name. This gave him some hope, but he still felt betrayed and unworthy after getting replaced so easily. What did Darkpaw have that he didn’t? Maybe he didn’t stop pulling out his fur fast enough or maybe he wasn’t putting in enough hours before. He would never know and the not knowing was eating him up alive.
For a couple days now any free time he would get from training with Goldenphantom he would just lie in his nest and sigh a few times. He was doing more warrior training than medicine cat training because Brakewings didn’t want to dedicate time to him. He knew he would have to grow up and accept things, but he was too sad to. Too bitter… He needed his mom.
“Mom?” Fairytalepaw called out to her, his voice faint and eyes teary as he approached her, “I could really use a day with just the two of us…”

Even all these moons later, she never really learned where Fia got their children from. Not that Goldenphantom had let it ruin anything. Cause she loved them. And all their quirks. When he was still a kit, Golden would groom Fairytale's fur this way and that to cover the bald spots or gently correct him when he went a little too hard. Getting him in her battalion was great, though she knew what Brakewings had done. She gave up trying to understand his ways, but definitely ended up giving him a few too harsh words about this.
So when Fairytalepaw showed up, she almost expected it. One day, earlier than this. But as she approached and gave him a quick kiss on the forehead, she was glad he came at all. "Of course, dear." Her sudden abandoned battalion barely crossed her mind. Maybe she could ask Fia to take them for the day. But she'd ask in a bit. "Is there anything you wanna do or anywhere, in particular, you wanna go?" Voice soft, she gently wiped away a stray tear.
Fairytalepaw chewed on his paw in thought, he did want a break. Endless Falls was relaxing, he could splash around there and prey was always nearby there. But anytime he wasn't working in the medicine cat den or for it he felt lazy. "Can we go to Moon Creek? Maybe if I can talk to just one ancestor Brakewings will make me a medicine cat apprentice faster."
Or maybe he would demote Darkpaw and promote him... It wasn't a nice thought, but Darkpaw only seemed to be medicine cat apprentice for the bragging right of it, she didn't seem to have any passion like he did! That and she always bossed him around even though he was older than her by FOUR DAYS. Okay so he wasn't that much older, but still!

Goldenphantom watched him. When one part of his paw seemed to get too red, she gently reached up and moved it slightly so he bit a different part. No matter how many times she suggested sticks and the like, it never really stuck. So she focused on keeping him out of the Medicine Cat's den. Her expression faltered slightly when he suggested the Moon Creek. It wasn't an issue to walk there, but she was hoping this could be some way to get his mind off of it. Just for a bit at least. This whole situation looked like it was gonna eat at him, and Goldenphantom felt another talk with Brakewings in the future. Still, she did ask. "Alright, we can go. Do you want to take a path through the Everbleed Mountains?" For as much as Golden wanted to push him in another direction, she knew by now it never seemed to work.
He walked close to his mother's side just as he did when he was a kit. He didn't have any sense of feel which meant there was no pleasure in being close to her such as feeling her warmth or her soft fur. But he seemed to like the idea of being near her enough where at a glance he knew she was at his side. For a long time he looked nothing close to Goldenphantom, which wasn't surprising given he was adopted, but now that his fur was beginning to grow in he could see the tips of his ears had gold and his tail was beginning to grow in a streak of blond. It was a bit childish, but he wanted to look as handsome as she was beautiful.
"If we find prey on our way back we should take it back and cook together."

It was a small relief he let her walk with him a little farther than usual. His dream was her dream. Even if he couldn't feel it, Goldenphantom appreciated the closeness. Even if it was ingrained in him, she wondered if it was more for her sake than his. So she kept next to him as the pair walked, occasionally letting her tail run along his back.
“Of course.” Goldenphantom purred. There were only two other cooks in Dayclan besides the two, but she couldn't remember the last time she cooked with Fairytalepaw. Maybe they never did. But today was a good day to change that. “Fia found some herbs a twoleg was growing and I've been dying to use them. They've been drying for a few days, but if you see anything else you wanna use, go ahead and grab it.”
Fairytalepaw used to wobble in his walk like a clumsy kit, but now, while his pace was slower he walked with purpose. Each step was long, precise, the tip of his paw touching the ground first before the rest of his pad flattened onto the ground. His gaze was almost always pinned on his paws before shifting to what was in front of him. For this reason it was hard for him to maintain eye contact, he didn't have the freedom to take his eyes off of himself. Sometimes he wouldn't even notice that he was lifting his paw up. Some days he wondered if this was how a ghost possessing someone felt.
Fairytalepaw's ears swerved in the direction of a ground squirrel. He immediately dropped into a hunters crouch before bursting through the bushes, out of sight from Goldenphantom. But it was only a quick moment later that he returned to her, his fur covered in burs, not that he noticed. Luckily he had long fur so none of them were pricking him, but they were horribly tangled in his pelt. Without realizing the mess he had gotten himself into he placed the squirrel proudly in front of his mom, "I caught it!"

If Fairytalepaw had looked up, he might have seen Goldenphantom doing the exact same thing. Watching his movements and making sure he didn't bump into anything while occasionally making sure she herself didn't fall. Though really, she was more focused on him.
Even if she tried not to, her mind wandered a bit. Beginning to wonder what kind of things she could find and put into their prey. She wanted it to be special for the first time they were doing it together. Goldenphantom almost didn't notice when Fairytalepaw stopped and dropped into a hunter's crouch. A perfect one too, one that made her heart swell with pride as he dove into the bushes. While she waited for him outside of the bushes, she wanted so desperately to look over and see what he was up to. When he popped out of the bushes with the squirrel, she gasped before leaning down and kissed him on the forehead. "Good job, honey!" She purred, kissing him probably too much but she was proud. Even if it was a good distraction as she pulled a few burs from his fur.
Fairytalepaw's eyes brightened at his mothers praise, but instead of puffing out his chest with pride he quickly gave his shoulder a few modest licks, "It was nothing after everything you've taught me. Stormcrow's forever!"
His head tilted up to the sky as he saw the sun setting, "Oh, we better hurry, night will be the best time to be at Moon Creek," He said.
For once he did something he never did before, groom himself. The task was a tad more difficult when he couldn't always tell if he flattened his fur. If he had touch he could have felt his tongue smooth it down, but instead he had to rely on his sight entirely. He wanted to look good when he addressed StarClan for advice. "Will you be there with me when I talk to them?" He asked turning back to look at Goldenphantom.

Goldenphantom let out a few quick laughs at that, tempted to just bury herself in him and shower him in kisses. "Oh you're too kind. I love you Fairytalepaw." She probably said it to them everyday, but it never felt like enough. She pawed the squirrel closer to her so she could carry it as she helped Fairytale groom himself. Softly pulling the burrs from his fur. He'd never complain, but she was so gentle he probably wouldn't if he could feel.
At his question, she pulled away briefly. Brushing down his fur with her paw, she thought. How were they supposed to meet with Starclan in the first place? It was a Medicine Cat's thing, and it wasn't like Brakewings was ever specific with the details. They'd have to figure it out once they got there. "If you want me to be there, I will." She answered with all the confidence in the world despite not knowing if she'd be able to keep her word. She'd at least try her best to.
His eyes shined brighter than starlight as he beamed proudly up at his mom, puffing out his chest with pride. Despite the numerous times she told him she loved him he still acted like it was the most perfect compliment he could ever receive. "I love you too! And I can't wait for you to be even more proud of me when I become a medicine cat. I bet when I go to Moon Creek they're going to make Darkpaw a medicine cat so I can become a medicine cat apprentice quick. I hope Darkpaw's been studying because if she can't move up the ranks then I can't start learning either," He explained as they bounded closer to Moon Creek.
the creek up ahead was misty and longer in length than anyone might have expected. As shadows seeped out from the horizon the blue crystals surrounding the creek began to glow under the nightly lights.

His words made her happy and sad at the same time. Goldenphantom just did not get Brakewings. Why not take them both? Why make Fairytalepaw wait? His eyes lit up so much when he was healing, even if it was something small like pulling a thorn out of her paw. She wished he could be that happy all the time, that all of her kits would. "I'll always be proud of you. And I'll be just as excited when you get to do something you love." Some part of her hoped the same, that Brakewings or Darkpaw would hurry up so he could finally learn. It wasn't gonna be that easy though.
As they approached the Moon Creek, a familiar smell hit her. It was abandoned, but it smelled just the same as when she came up here with Glowstar to get her lives after... after. Kasdeya died. Goldenphantom blinked those tears and memories away, turning back to focus on Fairytalepaw. "Any patch of grass you want to sit at is fine."
Fairytalepaw settled down near the waters edge, his paw heavily thudding on the ground, not realizing how aggressive he was being towards them as he waited.
"I guess I should try and sleep," He said a bit nervously, he withdrew a breath, "But it'll be okay..."

Goldenphantom laid next to him, gently resting her tail over his back. "You take a drink from the creek, then lay down and try to sleep. It'll be okay. Our ancestors will be kind, and I'll be right next to you the whole time."
