Mysterypaw knew her promotion to warrior was just on the horizon. Soon she'd be a warrior. And though it was hard to hear the talk about her sister Elyon, who in the League had been Assassin for four seasons now, Mysterypaw tried to feel pride in all she'd managed to accomplish.
It hadn't been easy since her mother Crimsonrose had left her behind. And it had been even harder for a time when she'd been a Maverick rank in the clan, but she felt she'd grown stronger for it. She'd almost felt like she could handle life now if her mother never returned.
And yet it turned out when faced with just that, she wasn't sure she could handle it.
That was why since she'd finished her hunt, heard pawsteps and turned thinking it was her clanmates, one of the mice she'd caught firmly in her mouth. She let it drop when she laid eyes on her mother.
Crimsonrose had clearly seen better days. She had a scratch on her cheek, her pelt was messy, and she was holding one paw like it was paining her, and she looked extremely tired. But still the large ginger she cat kept her head held high despite her exhaustion, and that she was clearly heavy with kits.
"Mysterypaw," Crimsonrose rasped. "It's so good to see you again," She said softly.
Crimsonrose nodded. "I'm afraid, WinterClan lost it's luster for me, so I've returned... because well," She glanced back at her swollen belly.
Mysterypaw frowned. More brothers and sisters. Did her mother intend to just have them in DayClan and then leave them behind as well? Her fur bristled at the thought. "You'll have to speak with Glowstar," She said a bit stiffly. "Things have changed a bit since you were last here mother, and... well she needs to be consulted. Come on, I'll take you to camp."
With that she picked up her mouse and with a wave of her tail beckoned for her mother to follow.
Crimsonrose didn't hesitate, simply limped after her daughter, her left forepaw occasionally going down when she needed it but she tried to keep it elevated as much as possible as she followed her daughter to DayClan's camp.
(Sorry, since starting the training school homeworks been a handful so rping got backed up last week)
Glowstar strode around camp peering into the ponds that lied at the feet of the valley, checking to see if the tadpoles were maturing properly. Though frogs weren't by any means DayClan's favorite food source it was always good to have them around just in case the clan became hungry. However DayClan remained healthy and far from ever becoming hungry.
When Crimsonrose walked into camp her ears perked up in alert at the sight of her, but she paid little attention to her pregnant belly, "What brings you here?" Glowstar asked, "Business or pleasure," She finished with a purr. She admired Crimsonrose as the brutal warrior she was, but not so much as a mother.
Galepaw watched the newcomer warily from the other side of camp. Did her Clanmates know this loner? They seemed to. She blinked. The apprentice, whose name she couldn't quite recall looked tense. Weren't other cats allowed on the territory though, or was this one caught hunting?
"Little bit of both you could say, if it were pleasure it would be a challenge to spar, along with spending time with my daughter." Crimsonrose looked at Mysterypaw who edged to stand closer to Glowstar, the ginger she cat's eyes narrowing, having not expected that action.
"But I currently won't provide much of a challenge, and seeing how well my daughter has fared in your care, I would like to have this next litter here as well." Crimsonrose said. "Their father while strong in spirit was weak in body, they wouldn't fare well in the league or in WinterClan, I figured this would be the best place for them to get their start."
Mysterypaw's ears flattened. "Do you intend to stay with me and my new siblings?" She asked her mother. "Or will you tire of DayClan like you did WinterClan?"
Crimsonrose lifted her chin. "I have been driven by the desire for combat, to grow stronger. WinterClan without Leatherstar, just lacked the same flare it once had for me. I went looking elsewhere and without the clans, or the groups it was exhilirating and quite dangerous. I have many moons of fight in me, things I wish to learn, cats I want to seek out to teach to reach greater heights. I thought my loyalty lay with WinterClan... but truthfully my loyalty lay only with my craft. It's why I knew you needed me to go away Mysterypaw, you wouldn't grow strong if you relied on me, it's clearly what's pushed Elyon to grow stronger and stronger. So I removed myself to give you the space to flourish, I will see these kits through till they're apprentice aged, and perhaps a little longer, like I did with you Mysterypaw." Mysterypaw unsheathed her claws and dug them into the ground not sure how to respond to this, only needing to bury her claws into something to give release to the feelings swirling inside of her.
Crimsonrose looked to Glowstar. "Since Mysterypaw already lives here, I thought it would be nice for them to have their sister here even while I'm gone."
Zinniapaw plopped down next to Galepaw, "Whatcha looking at?" She followed her apprentices gaze and she blinked. "Oh hey, it's Mysterypaw's mom, she came and dropped Mysterypaw off like ages ago. She must've let herself go, she was a lot skinnier when she came here last time."
Galepaw nearly jumped out of her fur at Zinniapaw's sudden appearance. "Oh, I was wondering how they knew her. That apprentice... erm, I mean Mysterypaw, doesn't seem pleased." she remarked. She shook herself a bit. Galepaw didn't like being nosy, but any information she could glean could help her fare better. She did not want to go down in class and have to worry about arranged marriages as a warrior.
Zinniapaw shrugged, "Well I guess she's steamed because her mom's been gone for moons. That would make me pretty angry," She lifted her back leg and began scratching her ear.
"Crimsonrose, your kits will always be welcomed here, we would never turn them away, of course you may stay," Glowstar said with a dip of her head, "However DayClan has adapted a class system, the kinder your heart is the higher class you have. I find that while your intentions come off as for the greater good of your kits, that your attitude isn't anything but sympathetic," She said carefully, thinking it over in her head. If a tom came here dropping off his kits every few moons would she say the same thing to him? She had to believe that she would after the second time. This wasn't a mother or father role, this was a parents role. She could understand a nervous first time mother and would never judge that, but this was Crimsonrose's second litter who wasn't born, yet she already decided she wouldn't be around. However sticking around till the kits were grown did seem fair enough.
"This hasn't impacted me though, Mysterypaw, what do you think?"
A class system? Crimsonrose's eyes narrowed as she considered this. But she nodded for the safety of this litter it made sense.
Mysterypaw ears flattened and she stepped up to her mother. "I once wanted to be just like you. I wanted to serve WinterClan and be the greatest warrior like I thought you were, but I see now you only want to chase thrills, strength and your eventual death." The black she cat grit her teeth. "Did you think before you left me behind?"
Crimsonrose's eyes widened and her head whipped to Mysterypaw in shock. "Of course I did!" Her ears flattened, "Everything I've done I thought only for you! I left your siblings behind in the League so you could live! I left WinterClan to bring you here because clearly you were relying on me to save you and I needed you to be pushed as your sister has thrived without me."
"And what of the rest of my siblings?" Mysterypaw challenged, bristling. "Elyon might be alive, but what of the rest?"
Crimsonrose paused. "And that's why this litter is going to be raised here," The ginger she cat said. "I never planned to have kits, " She admitted. "I always planned on living for battle, and one day hoped to die in glory. Then I met Soslan... and then you all came along, and that's when I realized that this was bigger than me, so I abandoned the league, I did regret leaving the others.... But had I stayed you would certainly die, and I had to trust the league wouldn't allow the others to waste away pointlessly. They were of my blood I had to have faith they'd survive. Like when I left you I had to have faith you'd grow strong."
Mysterypaw growled. "Faith?! What kind of mother just leaves her kits and hopes they'll be okay?!" She shook her head and drew herself up. "I had to be a maverick and struggle alone, clearly mother you reaped too many rewards and forgot the pain and struggle of a new place. Maybe this'll teach you some humility and compassion when strength alone can't grant you a high rank within the clan."
Crimsonrose lifted her chin. "If it will make you feel better Mysterypaw then I will accept this Maverick ranking," The she cat said, amber eyes gleaming, "I never back down from a challenge, especially when it is for something that matters. For you to feel I've received penance for hurting you, and for your brothers and sisters to have a bright future in DayClan, I'll accept the hardships this system may place before me. I am not afraid." She said confidently.
"If that's what you're both agreeing on," Glowstar said with a bit of uncertainty.
Glowstar had always chosen being a mother above all else, but that wasn't always the right call. Plus not every mother wanted to be a mother or was good at being one. Her mom had been abusive, she wished she had been half as selfless as Crimsonrose to understand her capabilities and know when to call it quits. As easy as it was to quickly judge Crimsonrose she had to respect her decision. Crimsonrose was willing to stay for the kits until they were apprentices, which was more than fair. But she could also understand why Mysterypaw couldn't let go of what her mom had done to her. When Crimsonrose left her that had been a real betrayal to her so of course she wanted justice, wanted more for her future siblings. But at the same time that was probably the best decision Crimsonrose could have made was to leave her here. Mysterypaw wanted a mom, but Crimsonrose just kind of wasn't one, she was a fighter first, Mysterypaw was never going to get what she wanted.
"Regardless of class though you're welcome to join this clan. I know you're a great warrior, but there's no need for you to prove that while you're pregnant so treat yourself to the freshkill pile, don't worry about patrols. I'll have someone fix up a nest for you and everything," Glowstar reassured.
Crimsonrose dipped her head. "Thank you Glowstar, truthfully today I would appreciate a chance to rest my pads. Come tomorrow I will be able to at least assist around camp," It pleased her to be recognized by her skill, but she was not about to let that give her a swelled head. She was a cat of honor, and would not stand to simply do nothing. After today she would seek tasks to earn her keep as she stayed, as once the litter was born she would not be able to contribute as much.
Mysterypaw didn't look completely happy even though she had gotten her way. Her mother was back, her mother was being effectively punished for abandoning her in DayClan, but it brought little joy to the black she cats heart. She imagined she should go and offer to make her mother's nest but wasn't feeling up to it.
amorensi "Oh! We can make the nest for her Glowstar!" Zinniapaw offered effectively revealing her and Galepaw's presence, and announcing they'd heard most of everything. She nudged Galepaw. "Come on! Crimsonrose is pretty big with all those kits lets make a nice nest for her." She said, "We'll have new clanmates soon!"
Then before Galepaw could say no, Zinniapaw zipped off to grab moss.
And there went Mysterypaw's excuse to leave she realized now, now she had to stay around her mother. Her ears drooped. "I'm... I'm going to go see if Sweetiepeach or one of the other warriors needs my help." She said, knowing she was fishing for an excuse to leave, but needing to leave eitherway.
As Mysterypaw scurried off, Crimsonrose let out a sigh glancing at Glowstar. "I knew it would be difficult leaving Mysterypaw behind, I didn't realize she'd take it so hard. Elyon thrived without my presence, I figured I was hampering her." The ginger she cat shook her head. "I didn't plan this one either... but one thing led to another and well," She glanced down at her swollen belly. "Here I am once again."
Galepaw's ears twitched back for a moment at the loudness of the other apprentice's words, but she followed Zinniapaw wordlessly. She was somewhat embarrassed at having been eavesdropping. Hopefully Mysterypaw wouldn't hold it against her. "What kind of materials should I grab?" she asked.
Glowstar dipped her head to Mysterypaw as she left. She looked after where Zinniapaw and Galepaw had run off to, a soft smile resonated across her lips like warmth seeping through clouds. Her attention turned to Crimsonrose as she spoke, she could understand both sides of the story. Both cats had the right to feel the way they did, she could tell this was a matter of enough time slipping by for the mother and daughter to forgive or realize they would never get along. "you were her hero because of course you were, she was so young when you left her here. That's every child's worst nightmare. But you also gave away what you loved for a better life, that's a powerful, selfless sacrifice. If you did your best, that's all most can ask you to do, but you know how kids are. They expect you to be better than who you are."
amorensi "Just grab some feathers and the softest moss you can find so Crimsonrose and her kits will be super comfortable," Zinniapaw meowed.
Faith Crimsonrose listened to Glowstar. She nodded her head grimly. "It seems so, I've earned the respect of many with my strength, and I've clawed and worked my way to greatness. But my kits are the ones who look at me and find themselves wanting more of me. Perhaps staying here with mothers like yourself and Windchaser," She recalled the Immortal Council being protective and caring for her litter when she'd first arrived. "I can learn how to be a better one for this litter, and for Mysterypaw. The rest," She winced. Elyon was unlikely to truly forgive her for leaving her and her brothers behind in the league. "The rest, I will have to accept may never forgive me."
