"I told you, I don't need you to defend me." Brakewings rolled his eyes as he explored the koi pond, searching for herbs around the edge. He knew how to avoid the local farm dogs, and he wasn't worried about getting attacked, but Lioningsnarl insisted upon staying close to his side. He was good with the dogs, it was his job, and nothing Brakewings said would dissuade him. The ginger tom bent down to examine a clump of watermint growing at the edge of the water - at least, he thought it was watermint, or maybe comfrey - and sniffed the shoot cautiously.
Lioningsnarl hovered over him, his short golden fur on edge. He spun around at the slightest noise, eyes narrow. "Who goes there?"

In walked a white she cat with sky blue eyes that twinkled but seemed dreamy too. Wintershine had been walking around the area without a care in the world, thinking of just how wonderful the day was and allowing her paws to go where they wanted. So it was to her mild surprise she came upon the pond with Lioningsnarl and Brakewings. "Oh hello guys, what are you up to on this alluring day? Enjoying the sun on the fur and grass, or perhaps talking to the koi in the pond? They tend to be great listeners." She was calm but mildly interesting in what the toms were up to.
"The koi are great listeners? Great, we caught another crazy one," Lioningsnarl breathed into Brakewings' ear, muzzle bent close.
The ginger tom brushed him off and greeted his clanmate with warmth. "Wintershine, nice to see you," the medicine cat greeted politely. "I was checking on the herbs in this area. I need to be sure they're growing well," he explained, "and collect any that are ready to be picked. Lioningsnarl here valiantly volunteered to defend me." His whiskers twitched.

"Well that was very nice of Lioningsnarl to do," remarked Wintershine unperturbed. "If you'd like I can help you in anyway possible Brakewings. I can help gather and carry the herbs or even help defend you along side Lioningsnarl." The she cat was indeed very interested in the gathering and picking of the medicinal herbs...as well as her companions. Although Lioningsnarl was fierce she was curious about what his personality really was, and Brakewings warmth was soothing and kind just like a medicine cat would be.
The dark ginger tomcat studied her. It was rare that cats offered to help him out; most of them didn't have any interest in herbs or were too uncomfortable to speak with him. He suspected some of the warriors were just reminded of injuries when they saw him and would rather forget, while others might be in awe that he had been chosen by the stars for this position, or perhaps they were simply too busy. Whatever the reason, it didn't change the fact that Brakewings didn't talk with other cats much, and he was grateful for even a little bit of interest.
"I appreciate the offer, Wintershine," he replied gently, "and it would be great if you could help." Ignoring Lioningsnarl's snort of disbelief, he turned back to the watermint he was gathering. "These shoots are a little too new and I don't want to take too much. Can you look for any other clumps growing around the pond? Take a good look so you know what they look like."
"They look like plants, Brakewings," Lioningsnarl interjected with a roll of his eyes. "Like every other plant around here." Brakewings was inclined to agree with him but stayed quiet.

"I can definitely help you find older clumps of that plant," purred Wintershine. The she cat paused for a thoughtful moment before giving a rather kind but yet easy going response to Lioningsnarl,"It is true all the plants look alike but they are also like us cats in ways. To someone colorblind or even blind for that matter we all look the same, yet we are all individuals with our own roles in life. Each plants helps us and the earth one way or another, as well as each cat helps their clans or groups or families...even to just help themselves. So while we are all the same we are also all different but none the less important in life."
The white she cat drifted over to what looked like the right area searching for the plants they were hunting for. However she got distracted for a moment seeing a blue flashing dragonfly float in front of her before dashing away to the other felines. "What amazing creatures we are surrounded by." That was when she saw the clump of plants they were searching for, although unsure if they were old enough to be picked. "Brakewings, are these old enough to gather or are they still too new for picking?"
Lioningsnarl scoffed at her explanation. "Great. Way to place value in plants. I told you she was crazy; next she's going to start yelling at you for picking them because they're all individuals with a right to live." He didn't bother to quiet his voice, allowing her to hear it if she wished. He kept close to the medicine cat's side for the next few minutes, keeping an alert watch for the neighboring dogs in case they left the barn, but he saw nothing. That was a disappointment: he kind of liked them.
Brakewings looked up at her summons and left his piles, hurrying over to check on the shoots she found. "These ones are ready," he told her, pointing out two bristly purple tops, "but not the rest. If they haven't flowered yet, I want to leave them for later in the season."

"Oh I see, okay! I'll continue to work on it!" The white she cat drifted over to some clumps of plants, looking for the ones she needed. Indeed she heard Lioningsnarl's remark but it didn't bother her. Instead it made her mildly curious as to who he was and his mindset. He seemed so rough on the surface but Wintershine felt that perhaps there was something hidden underneath those layers. However she wasn't stupid enough to poke a sleeping bear and just made a mental note of it, only looking at the tom thoughtfully and kindly for a few moments before finding her next patch of plants. There were more here and some had buds to them, however she didn't want to pick them all and just picked every other herb she deemed worth of use.
"By the way are there other herbs we need to find while we are out Brakewings or is it just these by chance?" The she cat gave a small soothing chirp of a reply.
Lioningsnarl squirmed uncomfortably under her gaze. He wasn't sure why she kept looking at him, but he didn't like it.
Brakewings hesitated. "Our stock on tulips is a little low," he admitted. The fairy garden was close by, but he was reluctant to send the pair to gather the poisonous plant. The fields could have dangerous effects on cats' moods. "I'll go fetch some. Why don't you two hunt a little until I come back?" he suggested. "Lioningsnarl will keep an eye out for the dogs if they show their faces." The dogs were usually friendly to the cats and left them alone unless they tried to hunt near the barn. Luckily, Lioningsnarl was trained to deal with them.
The golden tom looked appalled that he was going to be left alone with Wintershine.

"I don't have a problem with that, plus I can practice my hunting skills more and hone in their potential...always something new to learn." She walked over to the pile of herbs they had collected, happy to see she had helped the clan even if it was in a small way. "Is there any place in particular you'd like me to place the gathered plants for now? I could put them near the crook of that tree root...if that would work okay."
Again the she cat noticed Lioningsnarl's reaction to the suggestion Brakewings had given, perhaps the tom didn't realize it or maybe he didn't care but his thoughts were indeed obvious on his face. Once again the she cat grew more curious about the tom. It was like something was pulling her attention to him, but she couldn't quite put her paw to it. Indeed he was one intriguing feline.
"That looks great." Brakewings made his way over to the tree and laid down the herbs he had collected so far, arranged them neatly, then headed off for the fields.
Lioningsnarl sighed as the medicine cat left them alone. "Alright. You can start hunting over there," he instructed, flicking his tail toward the far end of the pond, "and I'll stay over here. That way I can alert you if the dogs come out." He was placing a great deal of space between them intentionally.

Wintershine blinked,"If that is what seems best for you right now and makes you comfortable then definitely do it, but I do promise I won't bite you." Turning the she cat walked away slowly, scanning the area for potential prey while on light footing. While she wasn't the best hunter around she surely wasn't the worst. Hoping to catch something she got low to the ground hoping to hear small movements or rustling of any kind.
"What does that mean?" he muttered suspiciously. Did she think he was scared of him? He stared after her even as she started to hunt, frowning. "I'm not scared of you, you know." His voice was louder now to carry to her. "I'm just giving you space to hunt without running into me."

"As you wish," Wintershine murmured quietly to herself more than to him but not unkindly. Focused she heard something...maybe a mouse? No a chipmunk. Maybe. She stalked towards the sound and felt herself chirpping to herself unknowingly. Crouching low to the ground she felt her soft white underbelly lightly graze the ground, ears back and eyes dilated. Wiggling her haunches the she cat leaped towards her mark...and missed as the bird flew away. Huh, so it hadn't been a rodent. Oh well.
Lioningsnarl's lip curled, annoyed by her response, but before he could fire back she was creeping after prey. He huffed as he turned his back. Fine, he'd find his own food. The golden tom worked his way around the edge of the pond, keeping his head low as he sniffed about for frogs or mice.
Finding nothing, he looked up in time to see the bird escape. "Good catch," he called sarcastically.

"Well thank you!" Chirped the she cat happily, thinking he was sincere in his statement. "I do have to admit though I could be better. Would you care to show me how you hunt?" She spoke the words softly and genuinely, blue eyes shinning with gentle innocence. Wintershine sat down in the warm sunlight, a light breeze slightly ruffled her soft white fur but felt amazing to the she cat.

Lioningsnarl huffed. Was she trying to mock him? He wasn't sure, but the arrogant tomcat wasn't going to pass up a chance to show off either. "Sure, whatever," he said, empty as if it meant absolutely nothing to him to have her watching.
He prowled into the reeds among the side of the lake, his head lowered and eyes scanning carefully. He was debating which of a few scents was the most viable when there was a low creak in the distance and a pounding of paws. The farm dogs had just been released. They hadn't noticed the cats yet, but they were notoriously defensive of the koi pond.

The she cat followed Lioningsnarl close enough to be within seeing distance but not too close to scare off any prey he was trying to catch. Wintershine didn't notice the sound of the dogs off in the distance but rather gave her full attention to the tom cat infront of her.
He spotted a fish within the water. It was a tempting target, but he knew better than to mess with them - the koi were much larger than they looked, and they weren't supposed to hunt them anyway. He turned back and noticed a mouse creeping toward the water to drink. Silent, poised, and ready to move, Lioningsnarl held his head still.
Then he struck.
The mouse didn't get a chance to look up before the animal whisperer descended on it with a triumphant cry. He held it up, his eyes bright as he looked back at Wintershine, only for horror to dawn in his eyes as he heard the pounding of paws grow close.
"We need to run, now!" he yowled to her, nearly dropping the prey.

Wintershine looked at the warrior impressed with the mouse he had caught. The she cat had to admit he was as good as he said he was at hunting and catching prey. It wasn't until his shout that she realized what was going on. The warrior went on alert and only puffed up slightly in suprise but otherwise tried to keep her head as calm and as cool as possible in this situation. If she allowed fear to take over she wouldn't be able to think amd survive this encounter. Only nodding to show she understood she ran side by side with the tom, only barely behind him in pawsteps as they ran.
Where was the medicine cat? Would the other tom be okay?
