Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
(It's long, but I also just wanted to put a lot down because I know when I first became janus in SunClan I was completely confused about the setting and what the heck anyone did. So I wanted the first post to be as descriptive as possible so if anyone forgets you can reference back to this post xD)
Autumngossamer sat in the study room of janus camp, nestled in the peak of the mountainous region of SunClan. Any cat that wasn't a janus, priestess, soothsayer, or promised were typically forbidden from entering this area, but there were some exceptions. Initiates were allowed and even encouraged to enter the study room to learn about SunClan's ways. Mass study sessions for the population of SunClan were also allowed in the ampitheatre. Prisoners also could stay in certain sectors of the janus camp. Family of the janus were also an exception that gave them more access to janus camp than any average feline. Just about every janus here was getting used to being one except for Skipstep, in which case this would all be things he already knew.
"Alright everyone listen up! I'm Autumngossamer, I am the firstand only cat in the history of SunClan thus far to go from initiate straight to janus when I was just an apprentice. I worked for the Shadow Era and almost destroyed the entire world as you know it and was cursed dearly by the Sun God for my treason as I'll demonstrate."
Autumngossamer's orange tabby form shifted, her skin looked like it was literally crawling like insects were burrowing beneath her fur. Soon enough her entire body was beginning to mutate, her face aged and her front paw seemed to begin to twist inward. Almost as soon as it began it ended as her body reverted back to normal. Whatever transformation had started it never got to finish and no one probably wanted to see what the finished result looked like. Still she offered no explanation as to how the curse worked and proceeded on.
"But I am also the first soothsayer to discover different avenues of viewing the future as well as how to enter dreams and allow others to access those dreams. I can tell you honestly that when I was a janus I hated soothsayer Dragonswrath and found his lectures boring, but in the end if I had listened I probably wouldn't have a curse on my soul. Soooo if you're not like, paying attention or don't care about the subject matter I'm not going to mother you into listening. Except for Gingersnap because she is my daughter. Now with that introduction out of the way what do each of you want to be someday, a soothsayer or a priest?"
"Do we have to choose?" Divinehope questioned, shuffling her paws awkwardly as the attention was turned on her. She hadnt even thought that far. She knew she wanted to be a Janus but now that she was here, where would she go? She was only the age of an apprentice who had already received her warrior name and it seemed her life was flashing by so fast. Her and Thirdpaw were a couple, now, and could end up being married in the near future. It seemed like she blinked and her whole life was flying by in a blur. Now, this given moment, Autumngossamer was asking what they wanted to be. Couldn't she just enjoy the present for once? Did she have to grow up so quickly?
"No this is literally just a question on which you're naturally interested in more so I can make a note of it," Autumngossamer said with a bored expression. She knew that if she was asked that question as a janus she would have easily said priestess. But hey, when soothsayer opened up it wasn't like she had much of a choice, you were just chosen. Originally she thought the only benefit of being soothsayer had been getting to wear any color paint she wanted. However after being taught some manners and how to act properly as soothsayer she found enjoyment and dedication towards her place in SunClan. Now more than ever she wanted to be the best soothsayer SunClan had ever had.
Skipstep's tail flicked behind him he had been Janus for a very long time, he'd become a janus a few moons after the first soothsayer had been lost and when Littlestar, then still a young she cat fleeing WinterClan, had been named Priestess Promised. "There's also nothing wrong in wishing to remain a janus," The tom meowed, he let out a chuckle. "After all even if your path is not to become priest or the soothsayer the Janus fill a very important role in the clan. You will learn a great deal, and do great things in service of your clan. You must do your best to not only strive for the greatness to one day become priest or soothsayer, but also fulfill your role of Janus to the fullest."
"I've been a Janus for almost eight seasons now, and I am quite glad in my ability to serve the Sun God so faithfully. If he should call upon me for either role I would step up, but I'm starting to think this is where my path goes and I'm quite pleased with it." Skipstep mused. There had been a few cats musing after Foxbane's abrupt stepping down that Skipstep might step up to be the Priest Promised under Littlestar, as if his mate would do such a thing. Truthfully Skipstep had begun to realize that he was ill suited for such a role. He couldn't handle all the responsibilities of being leader. Not as well as his mate could.
Divinehope faced Skipstep as he spoke. She was relieved that someone understood. She dipped her head to him. "That is all I want right now. I just want to serve my clan as Janus for now. I'm barely an apprentice age. I have plenty of time to think about what I want for the future. I just want to live in the moment and enjoy being Janus for a while."
Autumngossamer scoffed, was he even serious? "Heh, yeah, You might be that way, but not everyone is, Skipstep. I was chosen as Soothsayer and that's not a thing you can say no to. If you did it would be defying the path the Sun God has chosen not just for you, but the clan. They need to be ready to drop their janus life at a moments notice. None of you chose to be janus, you were chosen by the Sun God and humbly accepted. If you're chosen to be a promised someday you're all expected to do the same. So no, as sucky as it is, don't expect to believe that you have time ahead to think. Or even freedom of will to deny the Sun God."
Skipstep was older, but he always looked through rose colored glass. Everything about SunClan felt beautiful and if things got ugly then it was honorable. Really a common trait for SunClan cats, especially toms, they always seemed brainwashed the easiest. But he was also mates to Littlestar so she gave him more of a pass. "But hey, if you two want to believe in that knock yourselves out. The Sun God has favorites, maybe you two will be one of them and get by easily in life." She said with a pretty eyed teasing smile.
"Anyways we got Divine, Skip, and Ginger so I'm going to move on if no one else comes," She said. After all Satinlights was pregnant and the kits were kits. If Sun God was as knowing as everyone claimed he was then this was all "in Gods plan," for them not to come since he chose them.
"I'm sure the Sun God wouldn't choose a cat barely the age of an apprentice to run an entire clan." Divinehope responded with a bored expression. "I've got time so I'm going to enjoy these moments. I've already had my kithood taken away by being chosen to be Janus. So while I'm young and youthful, I'll write my own path."
"Of course we're going to do what the Sun God says," Dapplebreeze spoke up. The others had easily talked over her, and it was time she made herself known to the other Janus and put her voice out there. "But I want to be Soothsayer. I want to be able to predict the bad that will come before it happens and warn the clan. I want to know if cats are being disloyal so we can take them out." The kit was thinking of course about her disloyal father, a cat who had run away from her mother and from SunClan. The idea was despicable to her. Dapplebreeze added, "And if he chooses based on the good of the clan, I know he'll see it in my heart that I will do anything for SunClan."
She looked at Autumngossamer, expecting some sort of reprimand or admonishment for having a goal. The Soothsayer was frightening, and after her show of the curse on her, Dapplebreeze felt uncomfortable and worried about disobeying.
"You're lethal servants of the Sun God, just don't be surprised if he treats you like the help," Autumngossamer said simply to the two of them.
"Now whoever says you can't judge a cat by their fur is the ugliest rat warrior you'll ever meet. This is why the first day your training is a makeover. You can't just slap on paint in the morning and head out, you need to look professional, your fur can't just be clean it needs to shine, and you can't just walk like you used to you need to find your own I-Don't-Give-a-Damn pace. So each of you girls sit down, I'm going to do your fur, claws, paint, everything. Our weekly schedule is going to go like this. Wake up at dawn, pretty yourself up, mornings will be spiritual training, breakfast is mandatory, it's a time to spend with your family. Then we will hunt vigorously until noon. Afternoon is a two hour naptime followed by herb training. Then we will stay up till the wee hours of the night and work on combat training. I will always try and be a fair adult figure, if you feel overwhelmed stress, need a free day, feel sick of me. Please say so in a respectful way and I will always put effort into accommodating you. Does this sound like a deal, ladies?" Autumngossamer smiled at Skipstep, "And Skipstep."
Of course Skipstep was a bit more excluded from this. Her training was more for beginner levels. Because they were younger Janus who were expected to kill and be lethal assassins in desperate times it was important to train them hard. It was especially difficult when Janus were essentially meant to be a jack of all trades and master of all. An impossible task, but hey, Sun God only chose the best.
Divinehope scoffed. "Seriously? We have to look nice to kick some tail? Why can't we just put war paint on and go to town on some disrespectful flea pelt? Why do we have to be dressed up like a kittypet? We're not kittypets! We're warriors! We are suppose to look intimidating."
By the Sun God, she had given them so many directions all at once! Dapplebreeze was taken aback. There was no way normal apprentices had this much to do every day. When Divinehope scoffed, the kit turned to look at her. A part of her was anxious that talking back to Autumngossamer was a bad idea for the she-cat, and another part of her felt like she had a point. She remembered Scarletkit's constant care about her appearance and how Dapplebreeze had felt like she took it more seriously than actually being a warrior. "Why does our appearance matter so much, Autumngossamer?" she asked, deciding that getting snapped at was better than sitting there unsure about the reason for taking so much time on some paint designs.
Autumngossamer tapped each of the janus's paws, "These are your weapons, but your beauty is your armor. Walk into any setting and know you're already a step above everyone by your graceful stride, clean self care, and healthy body. Beauty is all about accentuating your beauty and best features. You have a dangerous job ahead of you so everyday you wake up in the morning I want you to wonder if this is your last day and if you're seriously going to leave this world as an ugly corpse on the ground. The LAST thing your clan will ever see of you should be nothing short of perfection, my darlings," She laughed almost in hysteric disbelief that out of everything she said they paused at a beauty regimen, "Good looks maketh a janus, I always say. After all, if you have to be the best fighter, hunter, healer, spiritualist, and researcher above all other SunClan members why do you stop at beauty? Beauty is a part of our culture from our paints to our fascination with decorating ourselves. Girls, please, please, please, promise me you will NEVER betray me and look ugly. You could tell the Sun God to kiss off, but if I ever catch you not trying I'll... Well I'll probably cry," She said truthfully.
Divinehope didn't know what to say. She didn't want to be known for her beauty, even though she was quite the sight. She looked down at her glossy spotted pelt and frowned. She was blessed with beauty but she didn't like to be an eye catcher. Suddenly, her heart dropped. Thirdpaw liked her but what if he didn't actually like her? What if he only liked how she looked or that she was a higher rank than him. Was he using her? She began to feel self conscious. "I-I still want someone to be reminded of what I did, not what I looked like." Honestly, she didn't care if Autumn cried. That wouldn't effect her in any way. However, she might get demoted if she doesn't follow the rules of a Janus. "But...I guess if that's what it means to be a Janus, I suppose I'll have to live with that..."
"Oh hush with your drama," Autumngossamer marveled, "Putting some blush on your cheeks wouldn't distract a boy even in your dreams. Honestly, look at yourself, I bet you could take a jab in the jaw any day, but at the first mention of you looking beautiful your bravery wavers. This is what I'm talking about, you can't just be comfortable with your claws, with your brain, it's the outside too. It's not the only thing that matters, but it still does matter."
Autumngossamer flicked her tail, "If you're going to get in a tizzy about it we can go start with experimenting on a test subject if that's more your level," She said, her voice gentler now. Divinehope was a piece of work, but she honestly loved that about her. Anyone she could talk to roughly and they would have the same about of ferocity right back was a friend of hers.
Skipstep shrugged his shoulders. "What the soothsayer means, is that looking perfect is imposing as having the sharpest claws. Maintaining that image, it makes you even more imposing. Especially since they know that SunClan's a force to be reckoned with. They won't see you as fluffy kittypets, they'll see your perfectly coiffed fur, your perfectly painted markings, sitting and looking oh so perfect; and they'll know that you can afford to look that damn good because you are that damn good. The way you carry yourself and how you look can gives an impression of you. When you look perfect, to other cats, no matter how you may feel or think on the inside you are perfect to them"
"And recognizing how you're perceived and manipulating the perception others get of you, is an extremely valuable tool." Skipstep meowed
The lesson was wearing on Dapplebreeze's patience. She wasn't old enough yet to sit still for this no matter how hard she tried, and the spotted kit was getting antsier by the minute. Finally, she jumped to her paws and began pacing. "Can we just get started?" she asked with a sharp tone. "I'm ready to do something. I don't care if it's paint or experi - exper- experimenting? Or hunting or fighting. Just pleaaaase Autumngossamer may we do something?"
