Bonefang watched the camp bustle with activity on this fine morning from a sunny spot in the grass outside the elder's den. It didn't seem to him it was that long ago when he was a kit just like those playing outside the nursery. A smile came to his graying face as he thought about those carefree days. Ah, those were the days, he thought. He had hard times too but the good times seemed to outshine anything bad that had happened.

Grasskit preened as he bounded across the camp, striding proudly through the tall grass and around the busy warriors that surrounded him. He was five moons old today, which meant that he and his sisters only had to wait one moon more before they were made official apprentices! The little chocolate-brown tom couldn't wait until he could learn to hunt and fight, and leave camp all on his own! Secretly, he had thought about sneaking out several times, but had always chickened out before he could go through with it. Spotting the elder sitting out all alone, the kit changed course and ran over to Bonefang. "Hello! Good afternoon!" He chirped, trying to sound as polite as possible. The elder was kin, he remembered his mother telling him once.

"Well hello to you too, Grasskit," Bonefang meowed. "You're sure growing fast. About big enough to be an apprentice." He wasn't too sure if the kit was an apprentice just yet. He didn't remember if he was promoted in the last ceremony or not. He knew he'd be corrected by the young tom if he was wrong. "So what are you going to do on this fine day today?"
"Almost!" Grasskit chirped excitedly, puffing out his chest pridefully. "Mom says I'll have my apprentice ceremony next moon! I've already starting planning my new nest and everything! I'm going to be the best warrior Summerclan's ever seen!" At the elder's question his confident demeanor faltered a bit, ears falling back against his head sheepishly. "I haven't decided yet. Between me and my sisters, the nursery is too cramped to play in. I wish I could leave camp and explore, but I'm not allowed to. Mudthistle would be really angry with me if I was caught sneaking out."

"That she would," Bonefang meowed. "Our territory can be full of dangers for a kit, even one who's only a moon away from being apprenticed." He looked with concern in his eyes at Grasskit. "Besides that, it's not uncommon for clan leaders to delay the promotion ceremony for kits who sneak out of camp. You don't want to wait for two moons now do you?" He figured Grasskit was only wishing but he wanted to reinforce the rule just in case. "So instead, how would you like to hear a story about Hawkstar, my father? As far as I know, he was the only cat who lead SummerClan twice."
The young tom's bright green eyes went wide with fear at the prospect of having the ceremony he had been dreaming about for moons delayed, and he fervently shook his head. Grasskit definitely wasn't going to sneak out now, even though he still thought the other kits and apprentices would find him cooler if he did. Luckily, he didn't have to ruminate on that thought for long, when Bonefang cheerfully offered to tell one of his famous stories. "Oh, yes please!" He mewed eagerly, quickly taking a seat in front of the elder. "I didn't know your pops was a leader! Did he have one eye like Ratstar?"

"Oh, no. He had two eyes just like everyone else," Bonefang answered. He was both pleased and amused at Grasskit's reaction to possibly having his apprenticeship delayed. Anything to keep the kits inside the camp and safe, he thought, is a good thing.
"Like I mentioned, Hawkstar led our clan two different times. Me and my littermates were born during his second time as leader. Would you like to hear what happened to cause him to lose his leadership the first time?"
"Yeah, I guess that makes sense," Grasskit admitted with a giggle, before looking up at the elder in surprise as he described Hawkstar's leadership. "I didn't know you could be leader more than once. Does that mean Starclan gives you two sets of lives? Why'd he have to stop the first time? If I were leader, I'd never wanna stop!"

"It wasn't because he wanted to but he had to," Bonefang replied. "And before you ask, he wasn't being punished for anything." He shifted his weight to find a more comfortable position. "From what I remember him telling me, he had been leader for only about six moons when a patrol came back telling of a rock slide that had trapped two warriors. He immediately gathered more cats and went to the other side of this mountain. While they were working to free the trapped cats, the rocks shifted again but this time Hawkstar was buried beneath them. It took half a day and most of the clan to clear the rubble and free all the cats. The two who were trapped first got out with minor injuries but Hawkstar wasn't as lucky. By the time they found him he had already lost five of his lives and quickly losing his sixth. If it wasn't for our medicine cat he would had lost that one too." He paused to see if Grasskit had any questions.
For the first time since the start of the conversation, Grasskit feel completely silent, staring up at the elder with wide eyes as he hung onto every word of the story. Getting buried under a rockside for half a day...it sounded so scary! Not that he'd ever admit that out loud, of course. Hawkstar must've been one of the strongest cats in the world, to go through all of that only for Starclan to ask him to lead again! When Bonefang stopped talking, he blinked in surprise, waiting until he realized that the elder was waiting for a response. "What happened after that?" He prompted, desperately wanting the story to continue.

"Well, when he eventually woke up in the medicine den, Hawkstar had no memory of anything that had happened in the past four seasons. He insisted he was still Hawkfeather and wouldn't assume his leadership role." Bonefang stretched his legs and continued. It pleased him to see that Grasskit looked like he was really into his tale. "It wasn't until after he had lost his sixth life that his memories finally returned to him. He told me he was sad he lost his leadership position because he felt he had more to offer our clan. But that didn't deter him any. He worked hard at being a senior warrior until the day SummerClan lost both their leader and deputy together. It was then when StarClan came to him and asked him to resume his leadership position again. So that's how he became leader of SummerClan twice."
As the elder explained how Hawkstar was chosen for leader twice, Grasskit's mouth formed a big O shape, as if all of his lingering questions had all been answered at once. Bonefang's dad sounded like a really amazing cat; it reminded him of the strong, imposing warriors he'd see around camp, like Dustfeather, Sootstep, or even his father Crimsonlife. But none of them were leaders like Hawkstar was; how could he be cool like that someday? The kit thought about it for a moment, and, coming up with nothing, lifted his head again. "Hey Bonefang, how does a cat get chosen to be leader in the first place? There are TONS of really cool warriors in Summerclan, and they all look like they work really hard, but only one cat gets picked. How does Starclan pick?"

"Hmm, I'm not sure how they pick leaders," Bonefang meowed thoughtfully. "They must somehow let the current clan leader know when they're choosing their deputy because as you know, deputies always are the ones who become leaders when the current one dies." He paused for a moment thinking about Ratstar. "I just thought of something else!" he continued. "The last time we needed a new leader, StarClan told Graythorn where to find Ratstar. That's because we didn't have a deputy then either. So Starclan led the patrol that set out to find him."
"Really?" Grasskit mewed, sounding a bit surprised by the Elder's words. He had obviously heard stories from his mother and the other Queens about how Starclan had sent Ratstar to them from beyond the clans, but it always seemed like Ratstar had just been around forever. "What happened to the leader and deputy before Ratstar? Why didn't Starclan choose either of them, or someone else from Summerclan?"

"I really can't tell you," Bonefang replied as he shrugged his shoulders. "It's a mystery to me too." Then with a sparkle in his eyes he meowed, "Tell you what! When I get to StarClan I'll ask them myself. And I'll tell them to let you know as well." He ruffled Grasskit's head fur with a front paw. "You know you might even become a deputy and then leader someday yourself if you work hard at trying to be the best warrior you can be."
