Lionpride
SunClan Warrior
The Loveable
Lionpride's ears perked up at a strange sound coming from the nest next to him. Darkness had long since fallen, and the kits were all tucked into Sanguinerose's side. Even though he didn't share her nest, he often slept right beside of it on the cool stone floor of the nursery since she was nursing two of his children after his mate passed giving birth to them. He had only recently been reunited with them, and since then had been afraid to let either of the little ones out of his site. Even the other kits of the litter had taken to calling him papa, and neither he nor Sanguinerose had the heart to break it to them that he was only Earthkit and Mousekit's father. Instead he went with it, treating all of them like they were his kids.
However something wasn't right. He lifted his head gazing over the kits to see Mousekit shivering, her breathe coming in ragged gasps. Startled he lowered his nose to her forehead, it felt like she was on fire "Sanguinerose, Sanguinerose" he whispered trying to wake the queen without disturbing the rest of the kits "Somethings wrong with mousekit" worry edged into his voice, even though he battled to keep it away

Sanguinerose was dreaming of the forest, walking through the sun-dappled groves of their blessed territory and feeling the warmth of the sun on her back. Her dream slowly shifted, however, until it was more of a nightmare. Fire lashed out at her, singeing her pelt and burning her skin. Her back began to throb with pain where the fire had burned her, and she felt terror grow in her heart. She ran as quickly as she could to get away from the burn, but like an ember the pain stuck to her back, burning and burning her up until...
"Sanguinerose!" She practically leaped out of her nest, flanks heaving with the remnants of her dream, until she looked down and saw the source of her nightmare. Lionpride was right, Mousekit was burning up with a fever, and before she was even fully awake her heart jumped into her throat. "Get Littlestar," she gasped, licking Mousekit's head in an attempt to bring the fever down. She carefully lifted the she-kit out of the moss nest and laid her on the cooler stone floor, wanting to draw the head out of her as quickly as she could. "It's a fever, but I'm not sure what might be causing it."
Kittencough, suggested a little nasty voice in the back of her head, one she fought to squish immediately. She knew she should be comforting her...Lionpride, but her love for Mousekit had grown and now she worried for the little one like she would worry for one of her own. She could see that Lionpride was primed to get emotional, but she had just enough strength to keep herself from growing frantic and prayed to the Sun God that Lionpride had enough of his own too.

Lionpride could feel his heart pounding in his chest. The last time he had left someone in need of medical attention, Aconite had passed away before he could even say good bye. He lowered his nose "I love you" he murmmered, before racing off out of the nursery. He knew Sanguinerose would do her best to care for the kit, and the only thing he could do would be to find help quickly. He raced up the hill to the den his mother and her promised shared "Mom, Mom!!" he called out loudly before he had even fully gotten inside the den "MOM, you gotta come fast"

Sanguinerose nuzzled Mousekit gently, snagging a damp piece of moss used to train kittens to drink water and pushed it towards her. "Drink, little one," she begged softly, dabbing her tiny head with a gentle paw. She knew little about illness and since this was her first litter, not that much about kits either. "I need you to drink some water, okay?" She was still producing plenty of milk, but she wasn't sure if that's what a kit needed with a fever? Maybe she should be warming Mousekit up? She was shaking like a leaf, after all! "Oh Sun, please let her be alright. She's only a kit. Please, if you have to take one of us, take me!" Her fervent prayers were mumbled under her breath so low even Mousekit who was just next to her couldn't make out the words. "It's okay, Mousekit," she whispered in between prayers, "Your father is coming back and he and your grandmother will make you feel all better, I promise!"
"Oh, quit your barking, Lionpride. Your mother is days from kitting and needs her rest." Bloodyrondo yawned as he exited his den, his long fur jutting out at odd angles, his body free for once of any body paint. Despite looking a little rugged the Priest Promised still shined even in the low-light of the cave. He had a way of commanding the room's attention with little effort on his part although, of course, that attention wasn't often positive.
The Priest Promised had actually been awake when the gray tom entered the leadership's shared chambers. Satinlights had only recently moved into his den and he was still adjusting to sharing his nest with another cat after so many moons of being alone. Bloodyrondo wasn't going to complain about it, though. The love smitten ginger tom was content with counting the rise and fall of his mate's pillowy white flank for however long it took for him to join her, "I'll help you. What's wrong?"

"Why don't you shush" he growled, he wasn't in the mood to be messed with at the current moment, all he cared about was getting help for his daughter "Mousekit is sick, she is coughing and burning up with fever" as much as would have preferred Littlestar, Mousekit needed attention now. If Bloodyrondo was available, the Bloodyrondo it would be. He was trembling at this point, his frayed nerves kicked into overdrive a look in his eye all to familiar to those that had been there the day Aconite had passed, yet thus far he seemed to be in control of his actions "She needs help now"
"Is she coughing occasionally or is she gasping, like she is struggling to breath?" Bloodyrondo quickly put on his healer hat and padded over to the wall of herbs. He was getting a lot more confident with medicine in the last couple moons. It had always been a weakness of his, the one skill for which he lacked natural talent. Hunting, fighting, that all came easily enough to him, but medicine was so intricate, so detailed. If a measurement is off it could be ineffective or worse; it wasn't something that could just be winged. Hard work does pay off, though. A kitten cough was easily treated although given Mousekit's age a lot of it has to do with the kit herself. Unfortunately kits died often because of this sort of ailment even at the paws of the best healers.
"Carry this." Bloodyrondo nudged a large leaf and round stone over Lionpride while he wrapped a bundle of catmint, tansy and a few other herbs with some ivy. He then exited his den with a swish of his tail and approach the nursery with a determined look in his eye. He was moving fast so no one could tell his heart was racing. If Littlestar knew that he hadn't woken her and Mousekit died in the night, even if he had followed her training perfectly, he knew that High Priestess would never forgive him.

Bloodyrondo didn't need to ask just where Mousekit was; he followed her cough. He was surprised by its voracity, he had seen the young she-kit that same day and although she seemed tired she hadn't been anything like this. He dropped the herbs to the side and leaned forward, nosing at her, "Mousekit, do you know who I am?" His first task was to see where her mind was it. It was a way to judge the severity of this so-called fever.

"Gasping" he confirmed giving anxious glances back over his shoulder as the promised picked out herbs from along the wall. He bit his bottom lip, part of him waning to scream at the tom to get a move on that his daughter was suffering. But before he could say anything Bloodyrondo pushed a leaf towards him that he picked up with ease along with the stone. He didn't know what any of this was used for, but he was grateful that they were finally moving in the right direction, forcing himself to not rush on past Bloodyrondo and back to the nursery. Hiis first instinct was to immedietly go to mousekit, but he gave them a little space, as he nervously paced over to Sanguinerose setting down the herbs as he pressed up anxiously against her without realizing it

Mousekit weakly lifted her head, refusing to take the water from her mother. Most of it went onto her coat as she shivered, but some managed to make it into her mouth as she shivered from the sudden contact with the stone 'It's to cold momma" she protested meekly, not even pushing away he mothers paws as she tried to curl into ball. Her muscles spasmed at the cold touch of Bloodyrondo's nose, as she flinched unable to find the strength to move away "Promised" she replied meekly

Sanguinerose released a relieved sigh when Bloodyrondo appeared in the nursery with Lionpride behind him, eyes watering. "I know little one. I know," she whispered consolingly as Mousekit whimpered. "Bloodyrondo will make it all better, I promise." She pressed against Lionpride, pressing her face into his neck and inhaling his familiar scent. She knew that between him, his mother, and the Priest Promised, Mousekit had the best chance to live possible. Still, that didn't mean it was guaranteed. "She'll be okay, Lionpride," she murmured, not lifting her face from his fur. "She has to be."
Bloodyrondo tsked and gave Mousekit a thorough look over. A cough could have a number of different causes but most had the same treatment. It this was kitten-cough or even whitecough, though, the prognosis was not good for a kit so young and weak as this one. He wasn't about to tell her parents that, not tonight at least. He selected a few of the herbs from his bundle and got to work, adding water and mashing some of it up, wrapping it, mixing it, all very precise measurements that he did so quickly it was almost a blur. Bloodyrondo's medicine training had really been coming along and, although he was not as adept as a true medicine cat, he could pass for a mostly trained apprentice. He finally put the medicine up to Mousekit's mouth, "This will make your throat burn just a little bit but you'll feel better afterwards. Take it slow."

Liopride wrapped his tail around Sanguinerose drawing her in close. She was just as anxious as he was, and he couldn't help but want to comfort her. He nosed gently against her neck, his warm breathe tickling the fur just under her ear. "She has to be" he repeated, just loud enough for her to hear. As if saying the words would be enough to make it a reality.

SunClan Kit
The Frail
Mousekit scrunched her nose, lifting one paw to weakly push the medicine away from her mouth but not very effectively "It smells..."before she could finish her sentence she started coughing, sending her little body shaking and dipping her nose into the mixture that now coated the long fur along her face and was dripping down her coat as she shivered
Why were kits so messy? He ripped off a part of the leaf he had used to make the mixture and wiped away as much of the dribble as he could before sighing and using his tongue to get the rest of it. Bloodyrondo knew he was taking a risk of getting whatever had infected Mousekit but he was strong and, besides, he was treating it at the same time he was catching it.
"All we can do is watch her closely and keep her comfortable. You won't want her to overheat so try not to hold her too closely until her fever breaks. She can have as much water as she wants and in fact I encourage it. If she's not at least a little better in the morning, then we will have Littlestar inspect her. For now the best medicine is rest."

Liopride nodded watching the rise and fall of her chest, the little she-cat having already fallen asleep with gasping breathes after the rough treatment, the effort of trying to take the medicine a lot on her frail body "Watch should we be watching for over night?" he question gazing worried at his daughter who seemed so weak. He had already decided that he would stay up all night until his mother could check her over in the morning, to afraid to tear his gaze away from her less she stop breathing
"Her breathing is key here. You can use Earthkit as an example; her breathing should be more or less like her brother's. Right now it's a little too fast, which is to be expected for an upper respiratory infection. If it speeds up or slows down dramatically then you will need to fetch me or Littlestar. If you would like, I could assign some Warriors to assist in watching her throughout the night, but I am not sure that is necessary..." After all, he doubted an overprotective cat like Lionpride would be sleeping a wink tonight, "Anything else you'd like to ask me?"
