Even with the brightest shine of bravery Princekit held, she preferred to stay in camp. Needing to be dragged out by her siblings to actually adventure, she was content to stay here, contrary to her persona. But the camp was quiet mid-day and Prince had spent her morning plucking flowers with their stems. Not a lot, or maybe too many. Too many for one kit at least, the dying flowers a stack next to her as she went to work. Twisting them this way and that, the technique familiar as she watched the queens do this a lot but also clumsy as she barely had a chance to work with actual flowers. Mostly grass and moss, where she didn't worry about how it looked. Now, she had to get them right. Which led the tiny cream kit to an intense concentration, one not broken until a figure approached her.
Sootpaw didn't enjoy getting close to other cats, but that didn't mean she didn't feel lonely. Not having any friends in DayClan was rough, but the black she-cat noticed a kit by herself weaving grass and figured it couldn't hurt to talk with the kit. After all, cats that young wouldn't be interested in getting close enough to hurt her anyway. The apprentice made her way over to Princekit and commented, "What are you trying to make?"

Golden eyes didn't hear the footsteps, wouldn't have looked up until she was suddenly shadowed, the color shifting to a darker hue. Princekit blinked, then her paws slowly stopped working before she finally looked up and met Sootpaw's gaze. The question barely grazed her ears, and she cocked her head, the love feather tied around her ear gently tickling her. The sort of worries that plagued the apprentice's heart may have been picked up, but Princekit didn't show it as she placed one of her paws on her chest, unwittingly dragging the crown up with it. "Why this? It's a flower crown. I've been working on making them for my loves, though it goes pretty slow." She said with a purr.
Sootpaw flicked her tail with interest. "A flower crown, huh? Can I see?" She leaned in closer to examine it. Sootpaw wasn't very traditional and she didn't partake in many clan practices, so the flower crown was a bit foreign to her. She had no idea if she would be able to make one, but her bets were on no. "This is very well done," she commented honestly. Perhaps it wasn't really, but it was better than anything she could do.

Princekit felt something form in her throat as Sootpaw leaned closer. All the scrutiny made her think of the clipped petals and the bits of stems that stuck out. Every mistake haunted her all at once, but she didn't let her paws shake. Maybe twisting it in such a way the flaws weren't so obvious, like covering a stain with a whole new coat of paint. The praise caught her a little off guard, clear in how she tried to step back despite sitting. Still, she flashed a smile. "Ah, your words pierce my heart. While fleeting in sound, they will 'ever remain carved inside. Thank you, my dear."
The apprentice cocked her head curiously. Princekit spoke so strangely, and the black she-cat grinned in return. "I have to admit," Sootpaw said, a bit embarrassed to say this to her young clanmate. "I haven't made one before. But I think I'd like to learn. Suppose you can teach me?" Sootpaw briefly thought about making them for the members of her gang, but she chased the idea away. They'd probably think her weak and sentimental. But the words were already out and she wasn't so heartless as to take them back.

Princekit held herself back from mimicking her. Never, huh? She couldn't be surprised, most of her siblings leaned away from the arts of the clan as well. Not that she really minded, it gave her a place to shine. A stage to stand on. Though she wasn't very greedy and quickly nodded. "Of course, love. I started with grass and moss if that's what you'd like to start with. They're a little easier, but I leave the decision to you."
Sootpaw nodded along, a serious expression on her face. "You're taking the lead on this, Princekit. I'll begin with the moss and grass as well." Sootpaw began tearing up grass stalks of varying sizes from the earth, eventually taking a break to eye the pile of flowers and poke at them with one pitch black paw. "Do you have a favorite color to use? Perhaps you can help me weave some into my crown."

As Sootpaw pulled strands of grass out from the ground, Princekit finished a knot that had wrapped itself around her claw. The crown she was making had a mix of red and white flowers. One of the petals had gently begun to fold in on itself, and Princekit let out a sigh. "No matter what color you pick, it will never be as vibrant as the first time you plucked it. Though, the shortlived color is what makes it truly beautiful. Ah, how fleeting."
Sootpaw eyed the kit warily. "You're a bit strange," she commented, beginning to separate the grass strands by width and length. Perhaps the size didn't matter though. She should ask Princekit. "I have to admit, I feel differently about it. If the flowers just die anyway, what's the point in putting in so much effort?" There might have been some double meaning to that question - something related to her childhood. But Sootpaw didn't think too much about it and in fact ignored the possibility of accidental introspection altogether. Before Princekit could respond, the apprentice added, "By the way, does it matter what bits of grass I use to weave?"

Princekit didn't appear to notice, letting the odd look run off her like water on a duck's back. At Sootpaw's question, she barked a laugh, only pausing when the apprentice continued. "Longer pieces are easier to weave with, but you can use what you wish, my dear." She shook her head in there somewhere, pulling her paws up only to feel the stems hold her there. Another toe wrapped in it. And as Princekit worked it out, she continued, not letting Sootpaw get the word in edgewise this time. "As for your first question... well, it's more than just the flowers huh?" Princekit's read was as gentle as a mother's kiss, not a trace of judgement in her eyes as she continued. "To me, the fleeting nature of life is what makes it so beautiful. If the flowers kept living even after being plucked from the ground, I'd have no reason to make more. The end isn't the goal here, it's the journey. Getting to sit here and talk to you has certainly made the effort with it, darling."
The black apprentice nodded, picking out the longer strands of grass from her pile. She listened to Princekit as she worked to weave the grass, getting frustrated when they didn't run together as smoothly as Princekit's flowers. "I guess that makes sense," she said absentmindedly, losing the end of the kit's speech as she tried without success to make a crown. "Oh, fox-dung!" Sootpaw finally cried, stamping her paw down on the grass pieces, still separate and not woven together as she had hoped for.

Princekit instinctively jumped back when Sootpaw cried out, eyes wide and ears pinned back briefly before regaining her composure. Her own crown was halfway crushed under her paw, but she simply pulled her claws out of it before approaching Sootpaw. Taking a few longer strands of grass, she let out a "Hear, watch this." before beginning to weave the grass together. She went slowly, letting Sootpaw see each step before continuing onto the next. "First, you turn it like this... then push this end through the hole you made... and pull both ends and that's the start. Then you keep going."
Sootpaw watched attentively to Princekit's actions. So that was how the grass was woven? It looked so easy as the kit deftly used her paws to craft the crown. She reached out a paw without hesitation, stopping barely the length of a mousetail away to ask, "Can I try now?"

Her fur pricked from the attention. She was mostly used to it, though she appeared to think through something a little bit before passing the grass crown to Smokepaw. "Of course. Here, dear." The words gave her some comfort. She was the one in control here, so why did she keep letting herself forget?
As Princekit passed her the craft, Sootpaw hooked a claw into it and pulled it close to her eyes. She looked up close at how it was woven together and nodded slowly to herself. Yes, she could do this now. With patience, the apprentice began working, periodically looking to the side to check if the kit was eyeing her work.

And Princekit did. Eyes light and stifling a small giggle as Sootpaw brought it so close to her face. Cream tail gently curling around her paws, she briefly caught Sootpaw's gaze. "You're doing good." Princekit spoke softly, like any sort of force would cause it to unravel. It was delicate work, and hard, she remembered how frustrated she would get until her mother consoled her. Princekit now picked up her own crown, and went back to work on it, glancing over at Sootpaw still every now and again.
The two cats worked in silence for a while. Sootpaw was actually finding the task to be quite therapeutic. She was so irritable typically, but when she was concentrating on creating the crown, she discovered with a little jolt that the gloomy mood surrounding her had lifted a little. Yes, there was still something bubbling under the surface, but this was the first breath she'd taken since she could remember when the noises and scents around her didn't make her feel like yelling. "Thanks for your help," said Sootpaw, eyes not leaving the crown in her paws. She meant it both for the assistance and for the revelation she had had.

The silence felt like glass, like it would be broke so easily. Even the slightest ruffle of the wind made her fur perk up. But the pair worked in silence, it never really broke. Every now and again, Princekit would look over at Sootpaw to check on her progress. She was doing so much better though, so Princekit didn't feel a need to say anything. Slowly, the blossoms were woven into her crown, a mix of little white baby's breath and dark purple petunias. Her ears swiveled when Sootpaw spoke up, almost not hearing it as she tied the last knot in her crown. Her creamy fur only did so much to hide her blush as Princekit purred, "You're welcome, my love. Here." Her voice a little higher than usual as she gently put her crown on Sootpaw's head.
