Brownie sat outside the nursery, grooming her pelt on a crisp Newleaf morning. It was still early so all of the kits were still sleeping, and Brownie knew this would be her one chance of the day to be by herself. She was terribly fond of being a mother and she found it difficult to pull herself away from the nursery, but these little moments where she got a moment to just breathe were so relaxing.
The brown she-cat licked one of her paws and ran it behind her ears, repeating the action until she was satisfied that her appearance didn't look like she'd just woken up. There was a certain amount of respect that a well-groomed cat demanded compared to a scruffy one, and here in this new Clan she had joined, first impressions seriously mattered.

The silver tabby tom walked back into camp, dropping some fresh prey into the pile. He had been here for a short amount of time but jusg enough to finally get the grasp of the territory. He may know the area well but as far as other cats go...not so much.
Pausing he noticed a queen was grooming herself in the peace and quiet. Intrepidsoul decided to finally take initiative and grabbed one of the fresh prey he had caught. Walking over he tried to look as kind and relaxed as possible. He didn't want to give off a wrong impression. With a smile he dropped the food by her paws," Good Morning, how are you doing this pleseant morning?"
Out of the corner of her eye, Brownie caught sight of a silver cat bringing prey into the camp. As a mother, she had to be as vigilant as possible. After a moment of making sure she'd seen him before, she went back to grooming. As she was finishing up licking the brown fur on her chest, a cat's scent mingled with that of prey drew nearer to her and she heard someone approaching. Her head lifted and she watched as the same tabby she had noticed a moment ago dropped a piece of fresh kill at her paws.
Brownie looked down at it curiously. "Good morning," she began politely, looking between the prey and the tom. "I was doing quite well enjoying the quiet of the early morning. It's peaceful."
The queen was a little confused as to why he had brought his breakfast over to her. Perhaps he wanted to get to know his fellow clanmate over a meal? Briefly she wondered if he had meant the gesture for her, but then she chased the idea from her mind. That was silly. Being in a clan may have meant that warrior caught food for those who could not, but it certainly didn't entitle queens to have their meals brought to them.
"My name is Brownie," she added. Brownie tried to appear genial instead of lost, and she stood up to head over to the freshkill pile herself. "Might I ask your name? And if you wait just a moment, I can grab something for breakfast from the pile as well."

"Oh no, I'm sorry for the confusion but I brought this to you as a gesture of good day. I caught some prey this morning and since I saw you were up thought it might be nice to bring some prey to someone who might enjoy it...not that you can't get it yourself or anything like that," added Intrepidsoul quickly. His grey eyes shone in a genuine way, now rather sheepish at his gesture. "I've only seen you one other time in camp and thought I'd get to know you a little bit. I haven't been here all that much myself and sometimes its nice to find kinship with those who understand those things." He sat down curling his tail around the front of his paws.
Tremblekit and Bluekit had both been sleeping quietly side by side the two orphans often slept together and hung out. They played together and ate together, they seemed like biological siblings and could have been related. The kits had been asleep for awhile and where now just walking up. Tremblekit kicked Bluekit in the stomach as he slept and Bluekit grumbled, opened her eyes and glared at her adopted brother. She let out a yawn and rose to her paws, looking around the den for her adopted Mother, Brownie. Not seeing her in the den, she rose to her paws and made her way out of the den, only followed by Tremblekit as he woke up and grew curious at what Bluekit was doing.
Peeking out of the den, alongside his sister, he gazed around the camp and rested his gaze on the fresh-kill near the den. He licked his lips and bounded over to the prey. Bluekit followed with a more slow approach as she gave another yawn. She reached the prey and sniffed it, then looked up at Intrepidsoul.

At some point Nib had gotten very annoyed with the presence of her adopted siblings and moved to the nest beside theirs, though she missed her mother while she slept. When she heard Brownie and then Bluekit and Tremblekit leave the den she raised her head and yawned, feeling sour and lonely. She wanted Brownie. With a stretch she stood and padded out of the den, spotting her with the kits and another cat, curious now, she padded over and nuzzled her her mother's side without addressing any of the other cats.

Looks like Brownie's quiet moment came to an end but the kits didn't bother the warrior at all. On the contrary it was nice seeing kits that he knew one day would be hard working warriors at his side. They were the future and they were proving that the clan was strong.
Turning to the kits Intrepidsoul gave a warm purr of greeting, his tail twitching with delight. "Good morning little ones, I hope your doing well this morning." The tom paused for a moment at the young kits question and replied, "That would be up for a queen to decide if your old enough to eat some or not. I'd ask Brownie if that's okay first." After all silver tabby didn't know how old kits could be to eat their first bites of prey.
Tremblekit bounded over towards Brownie and Nib and gave them both a warm smile before asking "Can we have it Brownie?" He asked his adopted Mother with a dip of respect to them.
Bluekit sat by the prey and Intrepidsoul, waiting to hear what her adopted Mother would say. She had her tail wrapped around her paws neatly.
Brownie was taken aback. The tom had brought the prey over...for her? The kind gesture sat well with her, and the queen sat back down and began purring. She was beginning to feel extremely pleased that she had brought Nib to this clan. After the two had struggled alone in the wilderness, having a secure place in a web of caring cats felt amazing. "You're right," she said, a soft smile on her face. "It is a kindred feeling. I appreciate the breakfast, thank you."
The queen heard movement from inside the nursery and glanced up to see who had awoken. She watched with amusement as her two adopted kits left the den. Tremblekit's curiosity and Bluekit's slower approach were cute to watch. She hadn't had the two long and was interested to see the kind of cats they would grow up to be under her guidance. As they were pestering Intrepidsoul about the prey, she scented her little Nib. Warmly, Brownie began licking her head comfortingly as the kit nuzzled into her fur. She knew that the kit was jealous of the sudden time she had to devote to two new siblings, and the queen was determined to give her as much affection as possible to offset the bad feelings. It would take time.
Brownie felt settled watching the kittens interact with Intrepidsoul. He had a safe scent and the she-cat trusted him. Their back-and-forth about the prey was sweet, and she was about to cut in to answer the tom when Tremblekit scampered over to them, asking her about eating the prey. She had been offering milk to them off and on, but honestly it was time for them to be eating solid food, so Brownie sighed a deep, fake sigh, throwing in a dramatic eyeroll for fun. "I suppose you may have a little," she began sternly before breaking into a smile, unable to take herself seriously. "But you had better all share with each other!"
The queen nudged Nib at her side, lowering her voice to ask, "Little Nib? Wouldn't you like to go try some of that nice warm prey with your brother and sister?" Then raising her voice for Intrepidsoul to hear, she said, "You are very kind. I owe you a juicy vole when I get out of the nursery."

Nib didn't particularly want anything to do with this other cat, though she had to admit he seemed perfectly nice. And she supposed the prey was a nice gesture. But he was also just another cat distracting Brownie from her. She hated this place and it's many cats. She could still remember when it was only her and Brownie together. Nib didn't recall the danger her mother had been in, or the struggle they'd faced. All she remembered was a nest that smelled only of Brownie and the constant attention of her mother.
But she didn't want to be rude, so when Brownie asked about the prey she didn't point out that these kits weren't her siblings or that the prey probably didn't taste that good, she just nodded into Brownie's fur and mewled back, "okay, momma." She withdrew herself, grudgingly, from Brownie's fur and joined the other kits silently.
Tremblekit nodded his head to Brownie. "We will share!" He replied with a bigger smile at Nib before he followed her towards Bluekit and the prey. He knew Nib didn't like him and Bluekit. But he was trying his best to win her over, to be a Brother to her. When he reached the prey he sat down and waited for his adopted sisters. Being a gentleman, he waited for the she-kits to eat first.
:: Bluekit ::
Bluekit sat quietly as they all exchanged words. When they were told they could have the prey, she had curled her tail in delight, but kept herself composed. She waited for her adopted siblings to come and sit, allowing Nib to eat first. She liked Nib, even though Nib didn't like her. She tried to be friendly and respectful to her, no matter what. This, the sharing of prey was a gesture she wanted to make, so she allowed Nib to eat her fill first.

The silver tom couldn't help but feel very amused watching the kits interact with one another as well as sharing prey. It was also nice to see they were eating meat now (or at least perhaps a bit anyway.) They were growing fast and honesty Intrepidsoul always enjoyed watching the kits from afar. They were always filled with awe about life and had boundless energy to them (which he wish he had at times.)
As the kits did their thing Intrepidsoul turned to Brownie," Of course, I'm glad to be helpful. I'll go grab us each some prey to eat while the kits have some of their own. Is there anything in particular you want, by chance? I see a mouse with my name on it myself." He gave a small chuckle to his own remark. It really was nice talking to other cats and getting to know them, even more to make their days.
Brownie sighed as Nib begrudgingly left her side. She hating having to nudge her daughter to do things she would rather not, but Brownie also knew that it was something a good mother should probably do. Still, the queen found herself already ready to give in and give the kit whatever she wanted to cheer her back up. Nib had been her whole world for their brief time alone, and now that the circumstances were different, she found it difficult to balance acclimating the two of them to Clan life and maintaining the codependent but comfortable bubble that she had lived in with Nib. And now there were two new kits around, taking away Brownie's attention even more. She watched as the two of them waited for their sister to eat first and her heart felt warm. Brownie had worried at first about taking on a new kit when she found Bluekit and again when she later adopted Tremblekit, but seeing them interacting with Nib as if they had always been family relieved her. She didn't regret what she had at first considered an extra burden.
Brownie switched her focus from the kits to Intrepidsoul. "I'm not picky," she said, although truthfully she was. Her diet before the Clan had consisted of food that her twoleg had given her. When she and her two kits had been abandoned in the wild, she had felt lucky that she had still had her claws but less lucky when she realized she couldn't even hunt. The she-cat had given Nib and Powder her milk and gone hungry many nights, usually eating prey that had been dead already, making her stomach turn sour and ache for a few days. It was rare that she had caught her own food. Brownie knew she would have to learn soon so she could provide for this new Clan once the kits were out of the nursery. The queen now felt sick when she thought of the rancid mice she had eaten, so she added, "But why don't you have that mouse and choose something else for me. I'd love to try something new." The tom was being so generous, and Brownie was very grateful for how kindly he was treating her and her kits. She was interested in learning a bit more about him.
As she waited on Intrepidsoul to grab her some food, Brownie leaned over the kittens, staring at the prey. "One day, you kits will learn how to catch this for yourself." She nudged Tremblekit with her nose. "And will you bring some to your poor old mother when you do?" The she-cat glanced over at Nib and purred. "Or maybe some of you will stay with me in my nest forever. We'll have to eat whatever blind prey wanders into our den!"

Intrepidsoul walked over to the prey pile to look at his options, and then after a moment decided to bring over a rather nice and plump vole he thought Brownie would enjoy. He also picked something for himself, nothing to big or anything but enough to fill his own stomach. After a few moments he gathered his small spoils and brought it over to the queen. Dropping it by her paws the tom spoke,"I think you might like some vole if you haven't had that yet. I think they tend to be better than mice for the most part."
Brownie watched as Intrepidsoul picked out a small creature and brought it to her. A vole? This was new. She was hesitant because of its appearance to a mouse, but the queen didn't want to appear rude so she quickly made herself lean down to take a bite. It tasted completely different from her kittypet food and from the rotten meat she'd had to eat in the wild. Pleased, she looked up at the tom. "This is very good. Thank you Intrepidsoul." She continued to eat and waited for the other cat to have his breakfast as well before speaking with him more.
"So, where did you come from before SwiftClan? We're all outcasts here."

The tom was happy to hear the queen had enjoyed the prey he brought her, so he began to eat his own breakfast as she ate hers. Occasionally Intrepidsoul would watch the kittens do or say something amusing that he couldn't help but smile about. Hearing Brownie ask a question he turned his attention to her, finishing up the last bite to his meal. "True, this is a place of cats from different backgrounds seem to come together to make a home...which is pretty interesting to me to say the least. As for myself I never came from a kittypet background or anything like, to my knowledge at least. My mother and father were wild felines like myself, just travelers who went here or there whenever we pleased. Of course that is not to say we didn't have obstacles and challenges to face, as its always something out here you have to worry about. Food, shelter, weather, illness, ect. That being said though I learned to not let it bother me as the wind takes you were meant to be. I have learned if I remain calm and know I'll get through whatever mess is in front of me I'll live and be relativity fine for the most part. It is a hard life out here but its also got the most rewarding things to it as well. Anyway, I got to an age I wished to travel on my own as my parents decided to settle down in a barn to live the rest of their lives out in. I still wanted to roam and learn all I could, I felt I wasn't meant to be there. After years of travel I heard whisperers about clans and groups out here, so naturally was curious about it. That is more or less how I landed here...where something told me this was where life wanted me to be in. So that's basically my story in short, now all I wish for is to stay in this place and make some friends and be in a family. Simple things a cat would want."
Slightly cocking his head to the side the tom asked," What about yourself? What made you wish to join and find this place?"
As Intrepidsoul finished up his meal, he began to speak. Brownie listened intently and when he was done, she answered with her own story.
"That's fascinating. You must have seen a lot through your travels. I'd love to learn more about them! I was raised what you call a kittypet though. I had ... relations with a cat outside my home, and then came two little kits: Powder, and Nib over there." The queen gestured toward the kit who was a copy of herself. "Our twoleg brought us out here into the wild and left us. There was a storm, and Powder got separated from me. I wasn't able to find her again."
Brownie felt a strong pain in her chest as she talked about Powder. It was heartbreaking for her, and she tried to push on. "Nib doesn't really remember her. It was just the two of us for a few moons before we found the clan. I couldn't have made it out here on my own, so I joined SwiftClan for Nib to grow up somewhere safe and taken care of."

Nib wasn't really listening to the cats around her, instead she'd eyed Bluekit and Tremblekit icily as she took the first share of the prey. The prey was still strange to her, she didn't yet like the taste of meat, but it seemed okay enough. After several moments she finally moved aside, making room for the others. She didn't like their sudden place in her life but her mother had taught her basic manners. As she ate she caught only the name Powder and her heart clenched. Though she didn't know this cat, but Nib felt an intense loss when she thought of her littermate. Her sister she'd never know. The feeling made the food taste off and she stopped eating, instead she just stared at Brownie, heart breaking in her eyes as she saw the pain her mother was still in.

To lose a kit is hard and the thought of it tore Intrepidsoul's heart, but he was glad she at least had her little Nib and two other adopted kits. Brownie had to be strong for her kit which she now was...that is something not many cats could do so he repeated his thoughts outloud. "I'm sorry for your loss but for you to be steong enough to care for yourself and your kit ahows you are strong and most definitely a warrior. Nib will grow up in a safe place and with others her age, which I think she will appreciate when she is older. Having lived not around others can be difficult and I think you're doing a wonderful job."
The tom glanced at Nib for a short moment and saw a brief look of sadness...for her mother or her sibling he was not sure but he knew this kit had also been through alot like her mother. They would be strong and now have friends and family to rely on.
