Smokeshadow sat idly watching the water flow past him at the multi-falls. He had been fishing but nothing had come by his spot. The soothing sound of the water as it gurgled and bubbled over and around rocks in the stream relaxed him so much so it caused his eye lids to droop. Sunlight glittered and danced off of the flowing water making the whole area a pleasant place to be. In his relaxed state, the gray warrior almost missed the sound of a crunching dry leaf behind him. The sound when it registered, startled him into jumping up and spinning around to see what caused the noise.

"You didn't ..." Smokeshadow began but stopped. Echomelody did startle him so he may as well admit it. "Well, I guess you did, just a little," he replied. "I just couldn't fall asleep in the den so I thought I'd come here and be productive. I was going to catch some fish but none came by." He gave his shoulders a shrug. "It's just as well. The peaceful sounds and the warm sunshine was beginning to make me sleepy." A large yawn came unbidden then he blinked. "So what about yourself? Can't sleep either?"
She offered him a sympathetic smile when he talked about catching a fish but then yawned. However, her smile quickly faded when he asked if she couldn't sleep either. "No..." She admitted. "Something happened the other day and now it has me concerned..."

"Really? What happened?" he asked, interested in something other than trying to fish or trying to fall asleep. "You can tell me. Maybe I can help." He sat up straighter and looked more alert.
She let out a small chuckle, "Thanks but...I dont think you can help...I mean, maybe some advice might help...anyway, I don't hate Flamingstar but I don't think she's right for Nightclan. I think what she did to Soaringstar was cruel. I believe Dayclan knows there are some cats in Nightclan that isn't completely on board with Flamingstar...including me...when Dayclan took back the White Tree...a few Dayclan warriors asked if I would be a spy for them. Give them information on Flamingstar's next moves..."

Smokeshadow knew there were some cats in NightClan who weren't very pleased with Flamingstar and how she came to power but he believed if StarClan gave her the nine extra lives of leadership that she has their blessing. "I understand that some of the things she's done in the past were questionable but she is our leader now and she should be followed. That's what the Warrior Code says. I hope you didn't agree to spy on her for DayClan." He wrinkled his nose when he spoke the name of the clan who seemed the opposite of them in every way. "That would be just so ... wrong. That would not only be a betrayal on Flamingstar but on NightClan as a whole. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't think Flamingstar has a squeaky clean record, but you - or any other cat - doing something dishonest won't make up for anything she did."
"I told them that I would think about it...I never gave them an answer..." She responded though she was highly considering it. "It's unlike me to do it but I just want to get rid of Flamingstar for good and maybe Dayclan can help. I mean, don't you think it was suspicious that Larkwing died after he returned?" Granted, he was sick but she couldn't help think that Flamingstar was behind it.
(Larkwing didn't actually die. I was hoping the plot would go through but it didn't. So Larkwing returned but Flamingstar ordered the medicine cat apprentice to kill him but instead, they helped him escape and faked his death.)

"Well, yeah, that did seem suspicious," Smokeshadow agreed. "But his body was never found. So I'm not sure what happened there." Sure, other cats said he died but there was too much mystery surrounding this whole affair that the dark gray tom wasn't sure what to believe in this matter. For all he knew, Larkwing could have run off again.
He was surprised however at Echomelody's animosity toward their leader. Weren't all leaders who were given nine lives supposed to be followed by their clan? He knew there were others in NightClan who didn't like Flamingstar but he didn't realize how strongly they felt, at least this one, until now. He, himself, was one who tended to go with the status quo. But to actually try to get rid of a leader? To him that sounded like something StarClan would definitely dislike. "It's up to StarClan to make leaders and/or to dispose them. Again I'd say that two wrongs don't make a right."
She sighed, "I suppose your right. I still don't know what Starclan was thinking giving her lives...maybe they see something in her that the rest of us don't..." She still didn't understand how anyone saw good in that cat. Even Echomelody, who saw good in everyone, couldn't see the good in Flamingstar. If there was any good in the Nightclan leader, it was buried deep down.

"Well, let's see," Smokeshadow began. "She's ... uh ... um ..." A dismayed look crossed his face. He couldn't think of anything really good about Flamingstar, at least not right away. "Well, she's a NightClan cat, that should count for something. Oh! She hasn't led us into any wars." The gray tom gave an apologetic look to Echomelody. "Actually I never really knew her that well." As soon as the words left his mouth, he knew it sounded like a lame excuse, which in fact it was. "I guess I see what you mean."
"Well, she didn't lead us into any wars but she did lead the rebel clan into war against all of the clan cats during the flood. She ran a mother out of Nightclan, leaving her kits orphaned and then had the audacity to claim them as her own. She broke up the Pride Alliance and then took White Tree from Dayclan while they were weakened. And she may be responsible for Larkwing's death. She's killed before, she could do it again. We may not have been led into any wars by her but we've had plenty of battles to last us a life time." Echomelody responded with a wrinkle in her nose. "I want to have kits. Beetleflight and I have talked about it but I refuse to bring a litter of kits into a clan led by Flamingstar. But it isn't like I can leave, either. This is my home..."

Smokeshadow sat in silence taking in all of what Echomelody was telling him. He wasn't one who concerned himself much with the politics of clan life. He just did what he was told. If to hunt, he hunted, if to fight he fought. But now as he was confronted with these many shortcomings of their leader doubts crept into his mind. Should he follow orders blindly as he had been doing all his life? He didn't know what to think. The white tree incident didn't bother him. That's what clans did, fight over territory. "I never gave much thought to this before. I guess I can see yours and Beetleflight's point about kits though." He had no mate so thoughts along those lines never entered his head. "Did she really break up the Pride Alliance?"
Echomelody nodded. Where had this cat been? Had he been living under a rock? "Yeah. That is why Sunclan marked Flamingstar for death. She broke up the alliance and then when Kotori was captured, she went to rescue him and ended up admitting to being the executioner for all of their plans. Kotori came up with the ideas, Flamingstar made them happen. So Littlestar marked Flamingstar for death. They barely escaped with their lives." The black and white she-cat shook her head. "She should never have become leader. What was Starclan thinking..." Then, it dawned on her. Like a light bulb lighting up over her head. She turned to look at Smokeshadow with wide eyes. "Wait...what if Starclan didnt give her the lives? Can you get lives from something else? I mean, Littlestar got her lives from the Sun God! What if Flamingstar wasn't given her lives from Starclan? It makes sense because she never talks about Starclan. She avoids it like greencough! If you even mention Starclan, she either changes the subject or excuses herself from the conversation."

He knew that SunClan was out to get Flamingstar but he figured that was just because they didn't like her. He didn't know she had done those things to cause them to be mad at her. He just figured they were doing it because they were mouse brained SunClan hairballs. Now all that had happened was beginning to make sense to him.
Now what is she saying? StarClan didn't give her her lives? "I...I never heard of such a thing," Smokeshadow whispered. His eyes were wide and he looked around to make sure they weren't being overheard. "But now that you mention it, I don't remember the last time I ever heard her say anything about StarClan. I just only assumed that..." His voice trailed off and fear crept into his eyes. "You don't think .... no it can't be possible .... I must be moused brained to even think this ..." He paused and looked around again. Foggy mists that blocked the sunlight swirled around. He had wondered why the mists hadn't evaporated yet like they had done in the past. "Are you saying the dark forest gave Flamingstar her lives?"
"That's exactly what I'm saying!" Echomelody responded, enthusiastically. Her mind was swirling and buzzing. She was itching for an investigation. She was relieved that Smokeshadow understood but did he believe her?

A shocked look covered Smokeshadow's face. "I never heard such a thing," he whispered, not wanting to speak to loud. "How can it even be possible? And if it did happen, how can it be proved? Leaders are sworn to secrecy about the things that take place in their nine lives ceremonies and the only other cat who knows what went on is our medicine cat." He was stunned. Could this even be true? "I doubt Turblentsea would reveal anything either. If anything was amiss, surely he would have said something by now."
"Pft" Echomelody puffed, giving a swipe of her paw. "Please. Turbulentsea hates Flamingstar the most in the clan. If anyone will slip up, it's Turbulentsea. But I think it is possible. It was rumored that Foxstar had received her lives from the Dark Forest but everyone dismissed the rumor because they just thought Foxstar was crazy and that cats were just trying to run her out of leadership. But what if it wasn't just a rumor? What if you really can receive lives from the Dark Forest! That would explain so much!" She tried to keep her voice down but now that she was talking to someone about it out loud, everything was making sense. It was hard not to get excited about it.

"But if Turbulentsea hates her so much, why didn't he say something if she received her lives from the dark forest?" Smokeshadow asked. "Being buddy-buddy with StarClan I'd think he'd had said something by now." Something was amiss but he didn't know what to believe. "I've heard of this happening but I've been told it's very rare, what if some evil cat is inside her head controlling what she does?" He still didn't want to believe that a NightClan cat could be evil on their own.
"Maybe Flamingstar is keeping Turbulentsea quiet?" Echomelody responded with a frown. "An evil cat could be taking control but she showed signs of being evil as an apprentice. So everyone says, at least. Those who knew her when she was young. She was so power driven that she did everything she could to become leader. Including stealing Nightclan's leadership position."
