The moon hung low in the western sky, a bright shining cat's claw waiting to strike at an enemy. Tinypaw glanced up at it as she made her way through the forest. Sometimes she could see the moon but mostly it was obscured by the tree branches. This was the first time she was sent out alone to hunt and she wanted to make a good impression on her mentor by bringing in a nice catch. Trying to remember everything she'd been taught, the small apprentice slunk silently through the trees and undergrowth in search of some prey scent.
Flamingstar had been out that night and noticed Tinypaw was out of camp alone which was against Nightclan's unspoken rules. Every apprentice knew that they needed to be out with a warrior. Flamingstar did not trust the other clans not to take advantage of a naive apprentice. Besides, it was dangerous out in the forest alone at night. However, she was intrigued by what the apprentice was capable of. She watched closely, making sure she was down wind so Tinypaw wouldn't notice her.

It wasn't too long before the small apprentice got a whiff of squirrel scent. Slowly and silently she tracked it until she came to a tall tree. Wisps of fog wafted gently around her as her peered up into the tree. There was movement up there, she was sure of it! Then after a short while she spotted a squirrel's tail wave from behind the tree trunk. The squirrel was making it's way down the tree apparently not knowing there was a cat waiting for it at the bottom. Finally when it reached the ground, Tinypaw sprang forward with her claws stretched out. Unfortunately for her, she had made too much noise alerting her prey to her presence. For when she landed, all she got was damp earth. The squirrel chattered loudly, breaking the ethereal silence of the forest as it ran back up the tree. "Fox dung!" the small apprentice hissed. "Well at least no one saw my mistake."
"Don't be so sure" came a voice as the powerful Nightclan leader emerged from the shadows, her flaming fur ablaze despite the dense fog and the shadows of the forest. Her pearl-like turquoise eyes illuminated in the dim light from what could be seen from the hidden moon.

Tinypaw spun around quickly letting out a small 'eeep'. Then as she saw who spoke, her eyes grew as round as two moons. Not only had she been spotted by someone but that someone had to be their leader! She was mortified that Flammingstar saw her mistake and caught her outside the camp alone. Her the skin under her facial fur grew hot. "I-I'm sorry," she mewed. "I j-just wanted to practice what I've learned and bring in a nice catch for our clan b-but..." Her voice trailed off and she looked at the ground. She had nothing to show for her efforts. Not one single catch.

Tinypaw looked up at Flamingstar and then immediately back down at the ground. "No," she mewed meekly, dragging her one front paw back and forth in the dirt. "Not yet. The squirrel was the first prey I saw tonight." Then she looked again at the leader with determination in her eyes. "But I will! I want to be among the best hunters in NightClan. That's why I'm practicing tonight."
Flamingstar raised a brow. "You still shouldn't be out here alone. Luckily, I found you." She looked from the apprentice to the tree that the squirrel disappeared into and back again. "Do you know what you did wrong, child?"

Tinypaw let out a sigh. "I wasn't completely aware of my surroundings." She had made sure her scent was being blown away from her prey and she had avoided the crispy leaves that were strewn all over the ground. "I made too much noise when I sprang. The leaves must have rustled too much and alerted him of my presence."
