Dawnmemories rolled her eyes, feeling frustrated and hurt and defensive - just like she did every time they were alone together. "I grew up with you and them as well, Sootstep. And I remember you being an angry, harsh kit who saw no reason to care for his denmates. You never got to know them, and now you're upset they don't like you. And maybe they don't. And maybe they did tell Ratstar as much. But that doesn't mean that's why you weren't chosen. Maybe there was a reason he chose me, and you're just making this about you." Her voice was as gentle as she could make it, filled with understanding she didn't actually feel.
Sootstep grit his teeth. He trusted her to be on his side; why would she turn against him? Why was she being so stubborn? "Do you think I'm a good warrior, Dawnmemories?" he demanded, looking her straight in the eye. "Because I do. I think I'm capable enough to be a member of the Redguard. If they didn't name me to the group, then they must have a reason why. So what do you think - are they biased against me, or am I a terrible warrior?"
"Ya too good at talkin' sense nowadays. Who are ya an' what happened to Raochie?" Ratstar chuckled half-heartedly to himself at his own joke, before scooching over slightly, so that his head rested on the elder's paws. "Suppose there ain't nothin' t' do until Dawnmemories gets 'ere. Mind stickin' around when I talk t' her, Roachie? Might ease up my nerves a bit."

"O-of course you're a good warrior! One of the best," Dawnmemories protested, her words full of conviction. "But, you have trouble... um, talking to others. And I think that your ability to be a part of the team was factored into the decision."
Roachpelt chuckled, shrugging his scrawny shoulders and shaking his head, "it's all this fresh air and such, ain't good for a cat." He felt touched that Ratstar would ask him such a favor and nodded, " 'course I will, Rattie."
Sootstep scowled at her. "I don't have trouble talking to cats who have common sense. It just happens that some of our clanmates are complete idiots. You know that."
"I am not!" Sootstep's fur bristled. For a moment he was tempted to rake her across the ears, but he immediately dismissed the thought, a little disgusted with himself for even wanting to hit her.
"Whatever. I didn't think you'd be like them, but I should have known better," he told her coldly. "Go hang out with your friends." He stalked past her, his tail lashing under her chin.
