"I'm sayin' these words beneath the stars above, so that the spirits o' our warrior ancestors in Starclan can hear and approve of my choice..."
Ratstar took a breath, looking out over the sea of his clanmates watching him below the hill. A small part of him was relieved that he'd remembered the ceremonial words decently enough, thanks to Graythorn coaching him through it for nearly an entire day, though the most difficult part was to come. The Deputy Ceremony was late, as a result of the Full-Moon gathering the evening before. Some of the Senior Warriors seemed convinced that postponing it was an ill omen, but the ragged tabby wasn't one to put a cat on the spot in front of four other clans. Plus, it gave him some extra time to think about his choice. Lemonspeckle's decision to step down was unexpected, but understandable. However, it left Ratstar at a complete loss. Lemonspeckle had been his first real friend in Summerclan; a loyal and trustworthy Deputy who he'd never imagined he'd have to replace.
The leader had gone over his options almost obsessively; talking Graythorn and Sunpaw's ears off in his worry. For a brief moment he'd even considered choosing his old mentor-figure, Roachpelt, however he knew deep down the elder didn't want that. Not to mention it would show clear favoritism. What he needed was a cat who embodied the ideals of being a clan warrior; not even a cat he knew, necessarily, but someone who was loyal, a hard-worker, and who could offer him a different perspective when it came to solving problems.
It had been Mudthistle who unknowingly pointed the she-cat out to him, one of her prospects for the Red Guard. A thoroughly dedicated warrior inside and out; a choice not even Dustfeather could argue with.

Graythorn sat at the bottom of the hill pleased with Ratstar's choice albeit it was a little late. Surely StarClan wouldn't count it against them though.
Dustfeather was disappointed he was overlooked again, not that he expected Ratstar to pick him. Perhaps he wasn't going to follow in his grandfather's paw steps after all. He was getting older and it wouldn't be too long now before he would join his father in the elders den. He looked over at Dawnmemories and sighed. She was clearly a better choice then he was and he was happy for her.

To say she'd been shocked would be an understatement. Dawnmemories was born and raised SummerClan, loyal and smart, but she was also one of many such cats. In fact, the red cat could name a dozen or more warriors she knew were also great candidates for this position. On top of that she was filling the pawsteps of Lemonspeckle, a cat who'd been widely regarded as an excellent deputy. She was young and eager, but the idea of her new responsibilities daunted her just as much as they excited her.
Still, she was touched by Ratstar's choice. Their new leader had proven to be just what their clan needed, a bit of sunshine for SummerClan and to be a deputy under him was an honor.
When her name was called for the clan to hear, Dawnmemories kept her head high, trying her best to look like a natural for this role. She stood and looked up at Ratstar earnestly, taking a moment to also dip her head to Graythorn, "thank you, Ratstar. I promise to do my best for SummerClan and for you."
Ratstar smiled as he dipped his head to the she-cat, feeling a rush of relief when she wholeheartedly accepted the position. "I trust that ya will, Dawnmemories," he replied, though he wasn't sure if she could hear him as the apprentices and younger warriors began cheering for her. Letting out a purr of amusement as he dismissed the clan meeting, the leader jumped down into the clearing, side-stepping the crowd of clanmates that were gathering around to congratulate the new Deputy. Instead, the tabby weaved his way over to where Graythorn was, taking a seat beside the Medicine Cat to watching the clan from afar. "Ya think I picked a good one?" He asked after a moment, genuinely curious as to what the other tom thought.
Mudthistle trotted up to her clanmate, occasionally glancing over her shoulder towards the nursery to keep an eye on Redkit and Grasskit as they bounced around excitedly by the entrance - no doubt organizing a brand new game of leader and deputy. "Congrats Dawnmemories," the young queen purred with a bright grin, as she recalled how the new Deputy had only been a few moons ahead of her as an apprentice. "Honestly I had been hoping to grab you as a member of the Red Guard," she laughed. "But I suppose Ratstar beat me to it. I can't blame him though, you're going to be great."

Dawnmemories felt overwhelmed as her clanmates huddled around her with the congratulations, despite the lateness of the ceremony. She momentarily lost track of how many times she said thank you. When she got to Mudthistle she dipped her head to her, she'd always liked the other she-cat. In fact, her biggest goal had been to be a Red Guard. "Thank you, Mudthistle," she said warmly, the other cats seemed to be drifting back to their duties now and Dawnmemories could once again breathe, "I would have loved being a Red Guard, and please just let me know if there is ever anything I can do to help you."
"Yes, I do," Graythorn replied, his eyes going over to Dustfeather. "My uncle has had aspirations for leadership for a long time. I'm pleased he doesn't seem too upset he wasn't chosen. He even looked alright as I watched him cheer Dawnmemories name." He paused as if thinking about saying something more, then he sighed. "There's something you should know but please don't let Dustfeather know I told you this. For years he had dreams of following in his grandfather Hawkstar's footsteps. A night or two before I had the message from StarClan about you, he had come to me wanting me to confer with StarClan about making him leader. But before I could, they sent me their message. I think that's why he wanted to be on the patrol to find you. Perhaps that might explain his," he paused to search for the proper word he wanted to use, "reluctance to accept you at first. But since then he told me StarClan was right not to chose him but he didn't give me any explanation and I asked for none."

"Well...if you'd be up for watching my kits once and a while I wouldn't mind," Mudthistle purred, only half-joking until both she-cats heard a loud cRASH erupt from the nursery, followed by the surprised shouts of the kits inside. The chocolate-brown queen inhaled sharply through her nose, giving Dawnmemories a look of 'you see what I have to deal with?' before quickly turning tail and bounding back to the nursery, calling; "Grasskit! Redkit! Seriously?! I was gone for like, two minutes!"
Ratstar blinked in shock, following Graythorn's gaze over to the Senior Warrior. In all honesty, he probably shouldn't have been as surprised as he was by this revelation; Dustfeather had never liked him from the start, only following his orders out of reluctant duty as a clan warrior. But the Summerclan leader had chalked it up to the fact he was from the twolegplace, with no prior knowledge about the clans. Now he realized that it was just salt on the already existing wound of not being chosen by Starclan. "I've heard your family talkin' about being descended from leadership before, but I didn't realize it was so important to him," he admitted, wondering what might have led Dustfeather to change his mind. The tom certainly hadn't seemed to warm up to him at all; was it something about himself instead?

Redkit looked at the destroyed nest, their shared nest with Mudthistle, then back at Grasskit. "Um, maybe we shouldn't have wrestled so hard." Just then she heard their mother call their names. "OH NO!" she squealed. "Help me put this back together before she gets here!" She began to scratch together the moss that was now scattered around the nursery.
"Dustfeather has put great store in our shared heritage," Graythorn meowed. "To me it's nice to have such a revered ancestry but it doesn't make me who I am. But to him," he looked back over at the gray tabby, "it seems it's all that matters. And he thinks he has a special connection too because he was given Hawkstar's warrior name, 'feather', at his warrior ceremony."
At that moment, Dustfeather looked their way. Was is because he sensed he was being talked about? Who could tell? He rose to his feet and gave a nod in their direction, turned and walked toward the camp entrance.

Dawnmemories bounded after Mudthistle, concerned for the kits. Whatever they were doing she doubted they could hurt themselves, but it had been a loud crash. Redkit and Grasskit seemed to be a pawful, even for kits. It was a good sign, Dawnmemories thought. They'd make energetic and loyal warriors one day. She entered the nursery with Mudthistle and spotted the kits scrabbling a nest together. Obviously it had been a victim of the the kits. It was amusing at first, but after a heartbeat she wondered if Mudthistle would find it so funny, and whether there was a lesson for the kits to learn in this.
"It was your fault for pushing me too hard!" Grasskit argued to his sister, still picking up clumps of moss anyway in spite of his protests. The lean tabby tom bounded back and forth across the hollow, grabbing whatever he could and attempting to shove the moss, grass, and feathers back together, only to immediately freeze at the sound of his mother's voice, guiltily turning around to face the nursery entrance where Mudthistle and Dawnmemories were staring at them. "Heh heh, hi momma..."
Mudthistle looked between her kits, and the large bundle of moss shoved into the approximate shape of a nest, and held back a sigh. Glancing briefly over to the new Deputy, she felt a tiny smirk cross her face as Dawnmemories was clearly trying to hold back laughter. It almost made her want to laugh to, but right now it was parenting time. "What have I told you both about roughhousing in the nursery?" Mudthistle meowed evenly, noticing Grasskit and Redkit stare down at their paws in shame. "You're both getting too big to do that in the hollow; you're lucky you collided with a nest instead of a rock or the den wall. Now, I'm going to show you both how to properly build a nest, then you both have to move your game outside, understand?" The young Queen couldn't hold back her smile anymore as her son and daughter's face brightened.
"Huh. Good t' know, I suppose," Ratstar remarked, returning Dustfeather's nod of greeting. "Not sure what any cat can do about that, seems more like a 'him' problem. I don't particularly care if we never end up friends, ya can't please everybody, but I hope one day the two o' us will at least be able to stand on even ground and treat each other as equals, ya know?" There was a moment of quiet as the leader's words hung in the air, before the tabby tom suddenly stood up. "Well Graythorn, how about we go congratulate our new Deputy?"

"My fault?!" Redkit protested. "You started it!" Moss bits were sprinkled liberally on her crimson fur and a feather stuck straight up on her head giving her a comical look, all the while she attempted to scrape back to together the remnants of the ruined nest. She didn't notice the arrival of their mother and the deputy until Grasskit spoke to them. "Uh, um, hi ..." she mewed. "Just trying to tidy up the nursery for you." She shook a shredded piece of moss off her right front paw and it plopped down adding to the already made mess. She felt miserable now as the lecture began. All she could do was stare at her paws. Then just as suddenly her spirits were lifted. Momma was going to teach them how to do something, a job that apprentices normally do! Did that mean they were growing up? Were they going to become apprentices soon? "Oh! Please do show us!" she mewed eagerly. She began bouncing around excitedly.
Graythorn was pleased Ratstar wanted a peace between himself and Dustfeather. Being a peacemaker was a very good trait a leader should have. This was an area he was working on himself. It was much easier for him to grumble and snap at other cats. He sighed. It's hard to make changes especially to yourself. He rose to his feet and stretched. "Good idea," he agreed. "Lead the way."

(sorry it took so long <3 )
Dawnmemories had quickly controlled her amusement and listened to the lecture in stony silence so as to appear serious. She wanted to support Mudthistle, not undermine her parenting by seeing the amusement in the situation. Should she stay, or go? It almost felt like intruding to be here, despite being welcome in the nursery. This wasn't her world. She had no kits, had never had kits, and she didn't really know what to do now. Should she offer to build a nest? Or excuse herself? Feeling awkward, the new deputy shifted her weight a bit.
